The food is mediocre. Not quite fitting with the prices, at all. The service was awful. They brought us our first roll tossed it on the table and walked away. We didn't even have plates! The other two rolls we ordered were also tossed on the table and the servers couldn't get away from the table quick enough. They were busy, but not that busy. I really like going to this place. The service is wonderful, and the food is great. The price isn't anywhere near expensive for a sushi plate. A special roll may run you from 8-15 dollars. But they have many other rolls that are much cheaper. My service is always prompt, and my food always good. They even have happy hour from 3-6 everyday. I come at least once a week. read more

I've been to this place a few times and they never disappoint with the food. The Sweet Hawaiian Roll is my absolute favorite. They have great happy hour (3pm - 6pm) specials too, and you never have to wait for a table. The waitresses are a little unprofessional because they'll be talking to each other, holding non-work conversations right in your face but the food keeps me coming back. My husband and I usually go to Ami Sushi every other Friday. We always get there during happy hour, and we get good quality sushi for a reasonable price. The place looks very clean and the people working there are always very nice and polite. As for the sushi everything is so delicious, I recommend the monkey roll it taste so good. read more

They have good rice here but that's about all. Their sushi isn't terrible but not good enough for the price. Also, the vegetarian selections they off are really gross. Well they honestly seem like some of my at home creations when I have no money and am just trying to cook using what little ingredients I have. I went back here because my sister wanted to try sushi for the first time and I was a little dissappointed by the service since I had hyped it up so much for her from my previous experiences. The food had a bit of a different presentation than before and the taste wasn't what it had been, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. GOOD Sushi places are hard to find...I came to yelp in hopes of finding a good spot in El cajon..went to Ami Sushi based on the reviews and let me just say to each their own but this place was a BUST!..we were seated quickly considering it was the lunch time rush hour, food was served promptly but the quality of the food was below minimum. My salad dressing was pure water with a 'zing'...we ate one piece of our rainbow roll and with all due respect, had to spit it out. The fish did not taste fresh at all! Unfortunately due to the sensitivity of eating bad fish I cant even give this place a second shot. Good Luck to them but I will not be going back. read more

The food here wasn't terrible but it wasn't good either. The sushi tasted fresh enough but was pretty lacking in flavor. It was also way smaller than I was expecting considering the portions at other places. I ordered the rainbow roll which had almost NO avocado in it. I was so bummed. The avocado is one of the best parts. And honestly, the place was filthy. It smells as soon as you walk in the door like rotten fish that's been sitting out for too long. There was a layer of grime on the table and booth. I used a napkin to pick up the soy sauce since it looked dirty, and sure enough the napkin stuck to it. If the food had been any worse I would have given it one star. I'm giving it two because the food was at least edible. Don't think I'll be back. read more

Love the place, I order to-go most of the time and the food taste delicious. My favorite to-go sushi is the pizza roll. I like the design and theme changes that the restaurant does occasionally, it's refreshing to see if you're a regular and see these changes over the year. I love the service here, the waitresses are friendly and nice over the phone, and they still are in person. The sushi chiefs are chill and I love the food they bring out. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Ami Sushi has good food at a great price. Was the food as good as Toshi-san in La Jolla? No. Were the prices better? Hell yes! My dad and I each had a large Asahi and some warm sake for $5. The sake was bottom shelf, but what do you expect when they're giving it away for free? And it still does the trick. I've been to Japanese restaurants where just a large Japanese beer is $7. Ami Sushi's food can be compared to the quality of Bento & Noodles (Chula Vista) or Hanaoka (National City). Dare I say that the pork cutlet at Ami Sushi was as good as, if not better than, the cutlet at Yakitori (Sports Arena area). The vegetable tempura even had a good texture and crispness to it. It even came out at the perfect temperature. By the way, I got 12 pieces of vegetable tempura for only $3 at happy hour! If only Ami Sushi would branch out and offer sweet potatoes, more zucchini, or onion instead of mostly broccoli, cauliflower, and mushrooms, they would be my favorite vegetable tempura of all time. The rice was great, but you kind of have to work hard to mess up rice. As for the sashimi, it tasted a little fishy, but what do you expect when you get it as part of a bento box for only $11. If Ami Sushi can find choice cuts of fish I would gladly pay extra and only eat here. Our waitress was not the most knowledgeable, but she was very nice and we knew what we liked anyway. So, long story short - if you're in the mood for good Japanese food at low prices in El Cajon go to Ami Sushi. I know I'll be back. 3.5 stars out of 5. read more

I like coming here for the food because it is cheap during Happy Hour. $1 Sake is also a plus, but the service is really subpar. It seems that the owners want to cut costs by not hiring that many people, but in doing so they make it impossible for the wait staff to keep up with all the people who come in. This place is the best bang for the buck . Fair prices and great quality , Normally get the salmon and tuna rolls with a cucumber salad ( super fresh / tasty ) . While it's not some darkly decorated asian restaurant , its fine for me . The wait staff Aren't there to chat with you as some sort of super model . first incident: few weeks ago i went to their site and i ordered their ami combo and some rolls and couple of maki specials, so my friends and i went there to pick it up and to our surprise they charged us more than what it says on their online menu, one of the lady said that the menu online is not updated and they actually changed the price few weeks ago, we were so disappointed coz on the online menu it was so affordable but we were so hungry and just paid what theyre charging us,. second incident: yesterday i decided to order sashimi salad, i went back to their site online, its new and updated and i saw $10.95 for a sashimi salad, so i was like it must have been really good and alot because its 11 dollars, so i called them and ordered it for pick up, i ask my bf to pick it up and to my surprise again when i open the Styrofoam its all chopped cucumber, few small slices of fish and few seaweeds, i look inside the bag if theres more, and tried to stir the stuff in the styrofoam to find if theres more fish or seaweed than what i see but there wasnt anything else, and im like wtf?! these chopped cucumbers and very small size of fish for 11 dollars.?? seriously.??? i dont know if the price is different when u dine in than for pick up or to-go but they suck.! very misleading and too expensive, not reasonable at all. read more

This place has gone downhill. When it first opened up a couple years ago, I was a regular. The food was good, prices reasonable, and the servers were attentive. I have been in there twice in the last week and a half and it has totally changed. I won't get into stories, but I will say that the servers are lazy, forgetful, inattentive and unprofessionally dressed. Every one of them was wearing flip-flops (which I'm pretty sure is against health codes.) They are surly and downright rude sometimes. On more than one occasion, I have seen one of them standing behind the bar with the chefs in plain sight stuffing their own faces before running something to a customer. They all stand back there and chat even after I just ordered a drink and they should be getting it to me instead of blabbing. The booth benches are way overused and feel like they are caving in. They need to be re-padded. The place smelled horrible the last time I was there; like a they were cooking a wet mop after they got finished using it on the floor at a nightclub. They've got TVs everywhere and alternative music playing over speakers like they're trying to be a sports bar. Each table now has boxes stuffed with chopsticks, forks, straws and other utensils for you to grab on your own. As if bringing that stuff to you with your order is too much for the under-worked waitresses. All in all, very disappointed to see what used to be a nice, up-and-coming family business go in the direction it has gone. The prices are still good and the food pretty good, but overall, no longer impressed. read more

I can't even believe Kevin's experience... maybe since they are new they were just getting the hang of things? This used to be Tokyo's and recently switched management. HALLELUJAH! Tokyo's was good, but I can honestly say this is the best sushi I have had in San Diego, and it's in El Cajon??!! My husband and I have now eaten there two nights in a row.... crazy, right? He has never even liked sushi and decided to try it once more because I love it. Now, he's hooked. We have tried the dream roll, la la roll, kamikaze roll, and mango roll. Yes, there is actually mango on top of the sushi and it's to die for! Their rolls are decently priced, amazingly fresh and colorful, and taste fantastic!! If you like to try different rolls rather than just the standard, this is the place for you! We will likely make this place a regular date night. P.S. Great Sushi, good prices, great service by the Chefs. It's that the WAITRESSES SUCK that got this a 2 star rating. We went straight to the sushi bar and were asked what we wanted to drink, the drinks were brought quickly... and that was the end of the service. We ordered some rolls and when they were served we noticed we had no chop sticks and no plates. The waitress never came back so we asked the Chef for chopsticks and plates, the waitress gave the chopsticks to the Chef to give to us, then we had to ask for plates also. The Chef asked the Waitress again then got us the plates himself. You would think at this point that she would notice she was messing up but no, we were never checked on during the entire meal. We had to ask for a refill at which point the Waitress handed me the drink by reaching over the bar and having me stand up and reach to get it. I heard another customer complain that they were still waiting for an order and had almost finished eating, the waitress said "well that order just takes longer to cook". I saw similar service being given to all the other customers by ALL the waitresses there, not just ours. There were two Chefs there handling a nearly full bar and they were still very fast, very attentive and made AWESOME rolls (Red/white Dragon, Catipillar and Monkey), not to mention THEY were the ones setting the plates, chopsticks, etc. We'll go back for sure, but we'll only sit at the bar, with that kind of service it's kind of a serve yourself place anyways. read more

I'm an avid sushi eater and seeing as how I live in El Cajon I was happy to find a local spot. I have eaten here a few times and would say their grade of fish is average. The last time I ate there I ordered a spicy scallop roll and found it not to be very fresh so didn't eat it all. This past Wednesday evening I called in a pickup order for a spicy scallop handroll to give it another shot and ended up getting severe food poisoning. DO NOT order the scallops at this establishment. I for one will NOT patron this spot again. Getting food poisoning once is enough for me. Good luck. read more
