Feel compelled to write an update now that this place has solidified itself as my go to Thai take-out. Still 5 stars, always consistent, quick, and delicious. I usually order pad thai with pork - it's so good here. But have also had some other dishes that are worth mentioning: tom yum - great spicy soup. maybe a little expensive for the size beef nam tok - delicious beef appetizer. great thai flavors - lime juice/toasted rice powder, red onion angel wings - tasty wings. crispy, great flavor, love sweet chili sauce. You get 3-4 wings per order. papaya salad - solid offering of this dish with dried shrimp spicy eggplant - delicious. great dish to order as a side. spicy, with garlic basil. pork shoulder - delicious, great sauce. Not as good as at bangkok golden/thip khao, but still good. bird nest on fire - pretty tasty and unusual dish, but not one of my favorites here nua ka ting - great flavor and spice, love crispy basil crispy duck - decent version of this dish, but I thought the portion was a little small. pad see ew / pad kee mao - both good. the flat noodles here are delicious and chewy. panang / green curry - pretty standard, not my favorites here moo tohd kratiem phrik thai - delicious pork in a sauce. perfect mixed with rice. khao ka moo - rich fatty pork belly. with chinese broccoli that helps cut the fat. yum. kua mee korat - delicious noodle dish, similar to pad thai but also different. It had more spice, scrambled eggs, and less fish sauce than pad thai. Delicious but I wouldn't order both this and pad thai as they are similar. Definitely worth a stop. Can't say anything about the service/dining in, but I've had nothing but great experiences with carry out. read more

Literally one of the only places along 14th street where the food is worth the price. The decor and mood is not as swanky as what you'd find elsewhere but the service is extremely hospitable and the food more than makes up for any shortcomings. The soft shell crab is incredible. read more

I stopped by Ammathar for lunch in November 2022. I'd eaten here previously and had enjoyed it and I was nearby and hungry so figured I'd swing by. I'm glad I did. Thai Tanic has been the first and only Thai restaurant I've been to since moving to the east coast. Two words: Soooo good! The Pad See Ew is my favorite Thai dish, so it's amazing to pay less than $15 for a generous portion of this! Note, getting beef is $1 extra when getting the pad see ew. The noodles are awesome too- fat noodles are my favorite and Thai Tanic takes it to a whole other level. So tasty. I'm giving this place 4/5 because it costs $6 for 3 egg rolls. That's quite a lot given the fact that it's about half the price of an entree like pad see ew. I'm not sure if they do happy hour, but maybe if they did half price egg rolls, it would be perfect! read more

On vacay in D.C. for a week with my sister. We both love Thai food, and this place had decent reviews on Yelp. Plus, it was just a few blocks from our hotel in Logan Circle. The service was friendly and efficient, the ambience okay, and the food hit and miss. My sister and I split the Kanom Jeep appetizer, a definite hit. Crab meat, shrimp, chicken and water chestnuts wrapped in wonton skin, then steamed and served with soy sauce. Excellent. I could make a meal of a double order (and wish I had). We each had the Soft Shell Crab Pad Thai. It's their traditional pad thai, topped with a deep fried soft shell crab. A major miss. The pad thai was tasty, but the crab was unedible. So much breading that if the fisherman hadn't killed the crab, it would have been smothered to death by the bread crumbs. And it was way overcooked. It's a busy place. Many of the dishes passing our table looked better than what we ordered. If I lived in D.C., I'd give it another try before reviewing. But I don't. And this is the problem with these reviews... you often get only one chance to make an impression, and this one was average at best. read more

We ordered a appetizer, crispy salmon, pad Thai and drunken noodle dishes. We assure our appetizer there and took the teddy off the food to go. The dumpling appetizer was good. This by far is the best Thai Restaurant I have ever been to and I hate that I live out of town!!! I ordered the Num Tom which is the beef salad, if you have a daring taste for spicy this is it!!! My waitress has memorized me and my wife's whole order which was slightly complicated and the food came out to perfection. Honestly, I came here so that I could check in and make an infinite amount of Titanic references... BUT, in a block packed with Thai restaurants every place must differentiate themselves some way, and the name sold me. While the name is A+, I would rate the food and space itself as average. It's a simple hole in the wall, we chose it because other places nearby were either full or expensive, and we were tired and hungry. Bonus points for no loud music, a place where you can sit and talk and enjoy your food without having to shout. No real decor to speak of. Turns out the food was excellent, service was quick, and we would return happily. The red curry with tofu had just the right amount of spice, labeled on menu as 2 peppers. Any more would have been too much for my taste but it was perfect. Super tasty, generous with the tofu. We requested the vegetarian fried rice entree be brown rice, it was a $3 up charge but well worth it. Usually fried rice is pretty boring in my opinion and I don't know why my husband orders it. This fried rice with the brown rice was light years better than any we have had. It had this deep umami, slightly smoky rich flavor that wowed with every bite. The prices are very reasonable and the gentleman at the next table said the food here is authentic. The server's English skills were not great if you ask anything complicated. I pointed out two red curries on the menu and asked about the differences. She thought I wanted both. I asked about a third dish and she wrote that down and literally thought I wanted three entrees. We straightened it out but don't get complicated. Just look at the pictures and get the fried rice with brown rice. :-) It does not look like much but our food exceeded expectations, and service is friendly and fast. read more

Don't expect customer service beyond the basic (which is fine by me, as long as the food is good, and it IS!) Like others have said, the house drinks are good and STRONG. I wasn't the only one sitting with low eyes ;) As for the food - we tried the Hoi Jor and Angel Wing appetizers. The Hoi Jor is basically a gourmet chicken nugget w/ plum sauce (bomb), and the Angel Wings are like stuffed chicken, but in a stuffed shrimp style - the drumstick or wing is your handle to the stuffed goodness (also bomb) Entrees included the Bird's Nest on Fire and Potpurri Seafood. The Potpurri came out in what appeared to be a small bowl, but was deeper than we thought and served up seafood warmth. The Bird's Nest, was literally spicy chicken (you select your heat level) on a bed of crispy kale. And I mean CRISPY. Both were served with Jasmine rice, and was delicious. While the dishes appear to be small, they're just right. We took home leftovers. I'd visit Thai Tanic again for the days I need a strong drink and filling food. read more

My parents went on a trip to Thailand recently as part of their quest to become culturally aware (but not culturally sensitive). Since coming back, they've been on a Thai kick, trying to find a restaurant as authentic and cheap as they would find in Bangkok. Uhm, good luck. I decided to take them to a Thai restaurant for Father's Day. The problem is, every Thai restaurant in my neighborhood has a fatal flaw that makes it a bad place to take my parents. Their assumed reactions to each establishment as follows: Thai Xing: "This is a terrible value. Did I just see a cat?" Beau Thai: "The menu is only for white people. Did I just hear gunshots?" Thaitanic: "I think our hostess is trans." I settled on Thaitanic because of the breadth of the menu, and I prayed inwardly that the trans hostess was off that night. Any other situation, bring on the trans(es?), but that's a cultural lesson I do not want to have to teach my parents over a plate of papaya salad. I believe it was MLK Jr. that said, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." In this case, the arc was pretty damn short because the trans individual ended up being our waitress. She came up to our table and asked where I am from. I'm thinking "Silver Spring, Maryland" and "...Another time and place..." are not the answers she is looking for, so i say "Taiwan." She starts speaking some Chinese that she's picked up over the course of her undoubtedly colorful life. This somehow turns into three people shouting in Chinese in the middle of the restaurant. And me, wondering if I can slip out unnoticed. My mom is weirdly amused by her. When the trans waitress comes back out with a large, flowered hat, my mom starts giggling and pointing. People in the restaurant start staring (at my mother) and I feel like one of those people whose baby won't stop crying on the Metrobus. My father kind of just sits there like he wants to kill himself or go to sleep. I don't really know how to deal with this situation so I consider curling up in a ball under the table. All that aside, the food was pretty average, not nearly good enough for me to forget about the circus going on in front of me. The standard curries and noodles are good and cheap, but the specials are overpriced and flat. Portions are somewhat small making it a little hard to share with groups. As a general rule, if it's over $12, it's not going to be a huge success. I don't think I can ever come back here - not because of the food or service, both of which were decent, but because after bringing my parents my public image has been irreversibly damaged. And thus, the series of embarrassing restaurant outings with my parents continues. read more

I was impressed with Thai Tanic when I walked in 15 minutes before they were closing for lunch and they still greeted and served me with a smile. The spice level here ranges from level 1-7. If it is indicated as spicy on the menu, it is made with a level 2. I ordered my panang curry with chicken at a level 3 and my friend ordered a dish at a level 7. We both stated how our food was spicy yet good. I love spicy food and I felt a level three is enough to have spicy flavor yet still taste your food. I seriously can't imagine going any higher if you want to taste anything else besides pepper. I sampled the Thai tea and didn't like it. But I am sure this has nothing to do with Thai Tanic, as I HATE tea. Period. The space is small so I am sure they get crowded very quickly, as they are located in a prime location. I would not recommend this space for a group, but a casual dinner with a friend or two. read more

It's great to have a Thai option on 14th Street. Although the chicken was a little dry in my Pad Kee Mao and there wasn't much chicken overall, the noodles were flavorful with the right level of heat, and it was good to have some vegetables in the form of green beans and tomatoes. Love the rebranding. This is a good joint for casual takeout Thai - can't do better with classics like pad see ew - but I found their less common dishes amazing as well, like egg noodles with lemongrass cream soup. What I'm really glad about is that they have kanom krok on the menu, which used to be an addiction at Baan Thai upstairs before they moved. However I recommend asking for it without the scallion, for a purely sweet dessert. read more

In need of some quick take out I ordered a Thai iced tea and lad na noodles to go. I drank the iced tea while I waited for the noodles. The iced tea was decent and the timing of my order was as expected. The meal itself was lackluster. First of all, I was super confused when I pulled it out of the bag. Instead of one large container with my noodle dish all nice and mixed up I looked in the bag and discovered one small styrofoam container and a big container full of what looked like soup. I thought that they had given me the wrong thing. I opened the small container and it was full of plain noodles. I guessed that the large container full of "soup" was actually the sauce meant to go over it, but neither container was large enough to accommodate both the noodles and the liquid without flowing over. I had to borrow a bowl because I was not at home. Needing dishes kind of defies the purpose of takeout. The menu, at least on the website, says that the lad na noodles come with a choice of meat (which includes shrimp, for $2 extra) and broccoli in a brown gravy sauce. As I noted, the "gravy sauce" had a consistency like soup. It was thin and flavorless. Meanwhile, when they say choice of meat with broccoli they mean meat with broccoli. There was no scallion garnish. No little sticks of carrot or bamboo or cabbage. Meat choice. Broccoli. Floating in what amounted to a soup broth. Meanwhile I paid $2 extra for shrimp. There were a total of five really small shrimp in my entire dish. Nor was the noodle portion very large. So my meal was basically small, messy, bland and overpriced. I remained unsatisfied and hungry after eating. Do not need to return. read more

This is actually a pretty good Thai restaurant. No wonder my Thai friend recommended me. Last week, 6 of us had dinner there. We ordered 4-5 appetizers, tom yam cun, maybe 2 - 3 beers per person, and 4 entrees that were market priced whole flounder, chicken with basil, fried rice, sizzling stir fried beef, and total with tax and 18% tip was $240 or $40 per person. I can't believe I dont have a review for Thai Tanic. It has to be one of our favorite Thai restaurants in DC area. This place is generally packed and the wait has been around 20-25 minutes most times. Tables are set close to each other - given the small size of the restaurant. But the ambiance is good and there is a huge bar (for its size) with good drinks! Service is great and quick - all wait staff always seem eager to help. Food has been good - among our favorite dishes are: Appetizers: Tom Yum soup - like the spicy edge! Yum Ped Yang (udck) - just let the roast duck sit in the sauce a few minutes before eating! Main Course: Kung Phuket - yummy but a tad bit sweet... Pattaya Seafood - spicy and yummy! Parking is a pain in the area - but its Downtown! Give this place a try :) read more

It should be no surprise that City Paper just rated Thai Tanic as the best Thai in DC. I have been many times, and it is reliably great every time (with some exceptions from my last visit, but I'll get to that in a minute). Nestled steps away from Thomas Circle, the location can't be beat. I have started many a night with some pad thai or the like, as the 17th street and U street bars are no more than a 10 minute walk. But then again, I have ended many a night shortly there after, as I forgot some much needed antacid. I guess that's what I get for getting gutsy with my spice level. My favorite dish by far from the ship is their soft shell crab pad thai. I always feel a bit novice when I order pad thai, but I'm sorry when that crunchy crustacean is thrown into the mix, not much else on the menu can compare. Be sure to start off with some variation of tom yum soup too, as theirs is some of my favorite in DC and they offer a handful of variations. You know, I find it kinda funny. Every time I go to an Asian restaurant, I always find it necessary to order an imported beer that matches the cuisine, but really, why?? At Thai Tanic I tend to go with Chang pretty religiously, even though it is barely comparable to a budweiser or something that I seldom drink. I guess I'm a sucker for trying to go on cultural journeys or something. So back to my last experience and my slight disappointment. We had a fairly big group and it was Saturday night, so we called a bit ahead to reserve a table, expecting to still wait when we arrived. Well once we got there, there was no real record of us calling, so the wait was pretty long. But, it was also tourist-ridden as it was the start of the Cherry Blossom festival, so I can get by that part. Where I did have a bit of a bigger problem though, was with their spice. As I mentioned, I have been to Thai Tanic many a time, and feel like I know the menu fairly well (or at least my soft shell crab). And almost every time I go, the spice is rather weak. I almost always order medium, then request some of the pepper sauce on the side to get some extra fiery bites... but this time, HOLY CRAP! I was almost struggling to eat it. And actually, others at the table who are less-heat-friendly, couldn't even eat theirs because of the spice. I haven't come to a consensus yet as to why or how this spice dilemma went down, but I am hopeful that it was just due to them being crazy- busy. Nothing better than stumbling upon a good restaurant within walking distance! This place is tiny, but packed full of flavor. Service wasn't the greatest (unless you are friends or relatives of the servers, as those around us that were got much better service). I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could, rather than the 4, but it's better than ok, and I wouldn't hesitate to go back, so I'm going with 4. We have only eaten here once (so far), Like another recent review, I got this: 37. BIRD NEST ON FIRE Stir-fried chicken with chili & garlic paste topped with red pepper and surrounded with crispy kale. 4-stars for the NAME of the dish...who can resist? It was spicy and very good. Loved the crispy kale, although frying it does take some of its' flavor away. Kale haters would probably like kale this way! My husband ordered what he usually does in a Thai restaurant, which is Pad Thai. I asked him how it compares to Pad Thai he has had in other restaurants and his response was "okay", but not as good as Pei Wei. Uh oh. I like Pei Wei, but they don't have any Bird's Nest on Fire there! Besides, surely a chain isn't better than this charming little place? I guess time will tell, as we'll have to go back and try more items on the menu. Prices, especially by DC-restaurant standards, are very reasonable! read more
