It should be no surprise that City Paper just rated Thai Tanic as the best Thai in DC. I have been many times, and it is reliably great every time (with some exceptions from my last visit, but I'll get to that in a minute). Nestled steps away from Thomas Circle, the location can't be beat. I have started many a night with some pad thai or the like, as the 17th street and U street bars are no more than a 10 minute walk. But then again, I have ended many a night shortly there after, as I forgot some much needed antacid. I guess that's what I get for getting gutsy with my spice level. My favorite dish by far from the ship is their soft shell crab pad thai. I always feel a bit novice when I order pad thai, but I'm sorry when that crunchy crustacean is thrown into the mix, not much else on the menu can compare. Be sure to start off with some variation of tom yum soup too, as theirs is some of my favorite in DC and they offer a handful of variations. You know, I find it kinda funny. Every time I go to an Asian restaurant, I always find it necessary to order an imported beer that matches the cuisine, but really, why?? At Thai Tanic I tend to go with Chang pretty religiously, even though it is barely comparable to a budweiser or something that I seldom drink. I guess I'm a sucker for trying to go on cultural journeys or something. So back to my last experience and my slight disappointment. We had a fairly big group and it was Saturday night, so we called a bit ahead to reserve a table, expecting to still wait when we arrived. Well once we got there, there was no real record of us calling, so the wait was pretty long. But, it was also tourist-ridden as it was the start of the Cherry Blossom festival, so I can get by that part. Where I did have a bit of a bigger problem though, was with their spice. As I mentioned, I have been to Thai Tanic many a time, and feel like I know the menu fairly well (or at least my soft shell crab). And almost every time I go, the spice is rather weak. I almost always order medium, then request some of the pepper sauce on the side to get some extra fiery bites... but this time, HOLY CRAP! I was almost struggling to eat it. And actually, others at the table who are less-heat-friendly, couldn't even eat theirs because of the spice. I haven't come to a consensus yet as to why or how this spice dilemma went down, but I am hopeful that it was just due to them being crazy- busy. While I have had my fare share of Thai food before I think this was one of the better ones and even though I only was there to eat and go I did enjoy the atmosphere. Seems that I was there during a pre-leather party... not entirely sure, but the environment seems to be interesting and would be always fun to go on a more relax day. Service wasn't the greatest (unless you are friends or relatives of the servers, as those around us that were got much better service). I wanted a quick meal in the vicinity of Logan Circle and decided it was worth trying Thai Tanic. I fell back on my usual maxim of testing an unpromising Thai restaurant by its tofu drunken noodles. It wasn't very good. It was strewn with the oddest vegetables (tiny rubbery mushrooms, crunchy cylinders that I inferred must be some part of a carrot), and the rice noodles dissolved into a mushy, sodden mess. Service: Horrible. So slow and uncoordinated. No one knew who was serving us. Food: Great. Not too large of serving. Just right. Too bad there weren't more parts of their resturaunt that we liked... Whatever you do DO NOT order the drinks. They are easily the worst mixed drinks I've ever had--anywhere! I can't warn you enough. I'm not one to ever send things back. I hate to be of trouble and I can usually make the most of whatever I have. Not with these drink. They tasted like those "potions" you would make as a child where you put anything and everything you could find in the refrigerator together. My friends and I wanted to get Thai food in DC (a bunch of us came here-me to visit mah boo, another girl to visit her boo (is everyone living in DC now??), with three additional friends of ours). We'd just toured the monuments and museums, and wanted to get our dinner on. Now, I love the movie Titanic and don't understand all the haterz associated with it. It DID receive a million awards, and plus, if not for the touching love story, all the history and graphics etc...don't they just blow your mind away? Besides watching the movie several times, I've also taken mah boo to Cafe Jack in LA, a ktown cafe that's literally on a boat, with pictures from Titanic decorated around it. It is quite the coupled up place, with heart pillows and lights, and if that's what he likes, then we're going there. Mah boo was searching through the Thai selections Yelp had to offer, and all of them had pretty standard ratings. Then he came across this name and jumped at it :P Although it only had a 3 star average rating, we decided to go for the name. Plus, no one really had any complaints, just said the food wasn't going to change our lives (but rarely does food do that to me at least). We arrive with our party of 6, and it's packed. The hostess says it'll be a 10 minute wait, but mah boo scoffs, thinking "yeah right." So we go next door since mah boo loves bikes, and there happens to be bikes there (serendipity?). But, we do get a table in that amount of time, and mah boo is impressed. We order several dishes to share, but the soup IS tiny (we thought we could share it amongst us all, but it's really only for 1 person). We also get some rice, which comes with an additional charge. I don't understand the charge on rice either, yet so many places do it. Or some start charging for tea. What next, tap water? (Although, some places DO charge for that...or clubs, when they say they HAVE no tap water, so you can only buy bottled. Yeah, right). The food was good, not spectacular, but pretty good. The servers were friendly, I was with good company, so that about did it. I don't regret this voyage on over here, or to DC, at all :). read more

Consequently, I've now been to 3 Thai places in DC in those couple weeks. And out of the 3, this one was my least favorite. The curry was watery and bland. The pad see ew was eh, ok, not that great. I decided to give Thai Tanic another try since it is so close by. I don't find the charm and enjoyment in this place that others do. I've eaten plenty of Thai in DC and elsewhere, but, this place just doesn't do it for me. I'd rather go eat at a generic "Asian Noodle" joint like DC Noodles then come back here and even bother to ask for an order of pad thai without bean sprouts (I hate bean sprouts, sue me!). Everything seems like a chore for these people. Some people find that "quirky" of ethnic food restaurants, but, perhaps I'm just not over my previous experience of being short changed. Just got back from dinner here. Really enjoyed my entree, Gai Pad Prik Khing - a spicy chicken and string bean dish. It was very tasty. Dessert, though, was disappointing - The fried banana was more fried than banana. The portion size was generous, but I couldn't finish it - After just a couple bites I left the rest. If they pared back the quantity and improved the quality it could be a standout dish - it's hard to go wrong with bananas and honey. We went to this place to celebrate a friend's birthday - about 15 of us. One thing is for sure - this place is not good for groups. Its a tiny place and gets crowded very quickly. We had reservations and they put us right next to the door. Needless to say, we were freezing throughout dinner with 28 degree Fahrenheit outside. The food is decent. The 'vegetarian spring rolls' were good. I ordered the 'Spicy Eggplant' which was ok....nothing great. My friend ordered the 'Drunken Noodles' which had a weird taste to it. My husband loved his dish - 'Bird Nest on Fire'. As for the service - don't have any expectations. Our waitress was a bit rude. As the food was served, the server didn't even bother mentioning what was being brought to the table. Perhaps they know how popular their joint is, so they don't really need to better their service. I've been here to dine in, but tonight I asked for delivery, which they will do if you are within the delivery area and for a minimum order of $20. They said the food would be there within 45 minutes; I got it in half an hour. Everything that was supposed to be hot still was, and it was all delicious. The delivery person was extremely polite. "But what about the food?" you ask. I'm getting there... I had a Thai salad -- my staple -- which I loved, partly because it was truly the size a starter salad should be. I often find this appetizer salads to be the size of a meal salad, but this was perfect. I also had vegetarian spring rolls -- they looked like three golden-colored Tiparillos (if you don't know what that is, you're WAY younger than I am). My main course was the Pad (chicken) Gra Pow, which had a nice kick, but not too much. Really enjoyed this dinner. Thai Tanic is a go-to place for me every time I'm in DC, and it was great to be able to enjoy it in the peace and quiet of my hotel room, too. read more

The service is what really killed this restaurant. I went there for lunch during the week and there were only 4 other tables occupied, however I never managed to get a refill on my pop. The waitress never came back at all and I pretty much had to grab her and give her my credit card so I could get out of there. I order the Pad Thai with shrimp and no veggies. It was good, but lacked any spice... maybe my fault for not requesting it. The noodles were sweet, no spicy at all. There is no lunch menu, so lunch is not cheap here. For a drink and Pad Thai, it was $17. This place isn't worth going back to. read more

Review for delivery only: HOW have I not ordered from here before?!?! I feel like I have honestly been wasting my time on other places. That's how pleasantly relieved I was when my dinner deliver order arrived and I savored those first bites. Since it was my first time ordering from here I stuck with a basic, "can't mess up", dish: chicken pad Thai ($13). I ordered it "medium" on the spices level (so one step higher than default and below hot). Also because I know myself I added an extra container of peanut sauce ($3) and threw in some spring rolls ($6) because WHY NOT. The serving size of the pad Thai was AMAZING. I scarfed down what I thought was enough for two and was pleased to discover I easily have enough for another dinner. I received three spring rolls in the order and couldn't stop eating those either... Am I proud of how much I ate? Absolutely not. But it was delicious and is now on my heavy rotation for delivery- looking forward to branching out on their menu. I will say the minimum delivery order is $20- a bit steep. read more

I was craving drunken noodles so I decided to find a Thai restaurant close to me and Thai Tanic was the first to pop up. I chose it because I thought the name was cute and creative. I ordered the shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer. They give you 3 for $7.50 which is not bad. I ordered drunken noodles with shrimp as my entree which was only $15 (not bad at all). I didn't really enjoy the spring rolls, they weren't bad but I've had better. The drunken noodles were spicy but very good and filling. My companion, who eats their regularly (read weekly), reports that he's seen out-of-towners who have followed travel guide directions to Thai Tanic. And when a place is packed on a Monday night, it's likely to be good. We arrived a bit on the later side--around 8:00, and by 9:00 the place was nearly empty, suggesting folks drop in after work, get a bite and head off for home. The staff provide brisk friendly service. Thai Tanic offers a generous list of cocktails. They're all on the fruity and tropical side. The food is solid. Nothing fancy to be sure, but tasty...and a bit different from typical Thai fare. The laab gai was warm (unlike the room temperature versions I've had on the West coast.). They also had some unique dishes that were a mix between curry and "dry" dishes. But for those looking for the tried and true, their pad thai was as one would expect. The interior is a melange of elements--a full bar back-lit to look like a trendy LA nightspot, 50s styled chrome diner furniture with glitter vinyl and Formica tops, and entrance typical of so many Thai joints. read more

We were seated promptly but waited a very long time to get someone to take our order even though the restaurant wasn't busy at all. 20minutes later, a large party cake in and we lost our waiter. Ordered the Penang curry with seafood combination- the seafood didn't taste fresh and there was barely enough seafood in the soupy curry broth. It was OK-AY. we also ordered the Ginger Chicken dish and that was good but the side of rice was super tiny. The appetizer was okay (we had squid satay). The mango sticky rice for dessert was good. I've been going to this restaurant since 2014. It has been my favorite Thai place in DC by far. Delicious and right price. I've lived in dupont/logan area for five years and now live in NY. I eat at this place every time I visit DC. The spicy Tom Yum Shrimp soup is such a yummy comfort food in the fall and winter. Their "bird's nest on fire" is absolutely delicious. Stumbled upon this place a few years back and we were pleased. We trotted in with our (then) three children for an early dinner. We were seated in the window booth and ordered some of our standard Thai favorites. The atmosphere was pleasant, lots of stainless steel with circular grinds, moderately dim lighting, and deep red accents on the upholstery, etc. Food was great, service was solid - not warm and gushing, rather more pleasant and efficient. Our boys (2,5,&8) always opt for pad thai, I had the beef with basil (xtra spicy), and my wife a chicken dish (garlic?). We don't do desserts so can't chime in on that end of the meal. This restaurant is staffed with Thai and I think the cook is also Thai. So if you want an authentic or close to authentic Thai food, this is the place for you. I started with an appetizer of mixed seafood with lime juice and it was unexpectedly good. I also had chicken Tom yum soup. And for the main course, I had chicken panang (chicken with spicy coconut based broth). All were descent but nothing really stood out that will keep you coming back up this place. The food was terrible and when I told this to two different servers, they just said sorry and made an excuse that food can't taste good without fish sauce. They didn't serve jasmine rice.The flavors were missing. The only thing I could taste was the soy sauce. Mushroom was uncooked and cold inside. My wife and Dad and I went here two nights ago. I meant to go to the Thai place next door called Baan Thai. We accidentally went to Thai Tanic instead (it's directly next door). I ordered the chef's special number 1 (cant remember what it's called). I also ordered the Tom Kaa soup. The chef's special was good, but the Tom Kaa soup was way too salty and fishy tasting. The spring rolls were good as well. The service was bad, but comparable to most Asian restaurants I've been too. Not too friendly and my Dad had to get up and ask the server for a soda because she didn't come to our table. My Dad ordered the pad Thai and said the chicken was slimy and rubbery. We then realized we only got 3 out of 4 orders and had to wait another 15 minutes for the final item to come out.
