I'm 73 years and I've eaten at probably a thousand restaurants in my lifetime. I was visiting the Auburn area recently and my friend made reservations at Amsterdam Cafe. I am not exaggerating one bit....this is the absolute best restaurant I have ever dined at in my life! I ordered the filet, along with the cheese mashed potatoes and fried brussel sprouts. Amsterdam is our "go to" place. Always good food and service. The chefs are evidently the best classically trained chefs to be found. The menu has remained basically unchanged but with some great featured specials. This is a trendy, well managed restaurant. You simply can't go wrong with this one. Auburn native who loves to return to this restaurant every time I visit Auburn again. It is situated in a small strip with a jewelry store, salon, and tattoo store. Went for lunch today, still had some favorites that I used to eat from back in the day. My favorite items to get are the calamari, turkey wraps with sweet potato chips, and the crab cakes. I've never had sweet potato chips as good as the ones here. And the honey mustard that they pair with the chips is divine! I do feel like the food items may be a little pricey with the actual ingredients that the food contains, but the atmosphere and service at this restaurant makes up for it. It is a casual-chic restaurant. There is outdoor and indoor seating, two bars, a smaller front section with high top chairs and many buffet tables. Cooked to perfectly, the short ribs were unbelievably tender! My daughter had the Crab Avocado Sandwich which was also perfect and to top it off our service was impeccable! We'll give this 3.5 stars. And as a Bama fan, it is hard for me to give a good rating to a restaurant in Auburn, but Amsterdam Cafe did deserve it. They have interesting twists on Southern cooking. By far the most delicious part was all the dipping sauces (and I'm pretty sure at least every dish had at least one or two sauces included - awesome perk!). For instance, the calamari and oyster appetizers themselves were average, but the sauces made them great! Similarly, I tried the Crab Cake and Avocado sandwich (which was not nearly as great as they made it sound, croissant was tough, crab cake just decent, and avocado is, well, avocado) but the mango pico that came on the side was awesome. Prices are what they are, seem reasonable for being a nice place but also being in Alabama. Service was very good, and drink variety large. Tasty to try, can't say I'd ever become a regular (if I was somehow subjected to living in Auburn). read more

Everyone loves the crab cake avocado sandwich... I don't really see why? It was OK, but hardly worth the rave reviews. I much preferred their Apple Brined Pork Chop. It was much better. The mac & cheese that came with it was a big letdown though. Overall, Amsterdam in nice. Good service, the food is good quality, the drinks are nice, and the decor is pleasant. I'm not sure it deserves the accolades it has been given, but is still a good overall experience. I wouldn't make it a go-to, but I'd definitely come back. read more

Today was our first time for dinner at Amsterdam Cafe, and we will not be returning. We didn't have very high expectations walking in anyway, but we were still disappointed by just how sub-par the quality of their ingredients were - especially for the price. That was the biggest issue with our experience there: you could taste that the food is not freshly prepared and that they use low-quality, cheap ingredients. I gave this review a second star for atmosphere only, since the outside seating section is really quite cute. I ordered the Sweet Tea Fried Chicken, which came with a biscuit, collards and mac & cheese. The breading was the better part of the chicken although it was a little salty - it was the actual chicken meat that was an issue: it was clearly a low-quality, badly prepared piece of chicken thigh. The skin underneath the breading looked like it had been previously grilled - I suppose for the Chicken Carbonara dish on the menu, which also uses the sweet tea brined chicken. Simply slapping some breading on it will just not fly in the south. If you want some better fried chicken in Auburn, go to Acre for their lunch chicken & waffles - even KFC would probably be a better choice. The sides were quite underwhelming as well: the biscuit was pale and blah, the mac & cheese was not cheesy or particularly flavorful, and for some reason consisted of about 50% ham (Jim&Nick's are a lot better). My boyfriend ordered the Steak Frites with a bone-in ribeye, cooked medium-rare. I did not try the meat, but he reported it was an extremely tough and chewy piece of meat with lots of ligaments. Again, we take it as a sign of low-quality ingredients. The fries were the only thing we both enjoyed and finished. Needless to say, we passed on dessert. We walked away with a 72$ check (adding a tea and a glass of wine to the above mentioned entrees), and felt like we had eaten at a fast-food place that had a bad day. read more

It was one of my favorites back in my college days, but the shrimp was seriously over-salted, the steak was very mediocre and did not have much of a char/crust on the outside. What a nice surprise in Auburn! It's a small college town where restaurants are dominated by events. We went for our daughter's graduation and had to wait an hour for a table. Even with the crowd, the service was great. The American-fare food was consistent with menus seen in larger cities. I had a NY strip steak that was as good as I have ever tasted. The preparations were near perfect for the rest of my family as well. Pricey for college students but it's worth it when you have a special occasion! read more

My wife took a large party to the restaurant last night. She came home and was sick last night. Two people at her table had the same item, both were sick. Crab cake avocado sandwich, something she has enjoyed many times in the past, and probably the main reason she talked 9 women into using this restaurant. At my urging she called them today, the manager was dismissive, telling her "our kitchen is clean". Nothing was offered to compensate for an evening of violent nausea and vomiting, causing her to miss work the next day. She has not called her remaining friends to inquire if they were sick but we know for sure at least two. I'd say that would be the last time we give Amsterdam our money, Hamilton's a couple blocks down is way better anyway! If the manager had simply apologized and offered another try in a few weeks he would have comped one plate, and sold plates to the rest of my family but instead I am prompted to tell everyone I can that Amsterdam cafe will give you food poisoning. read more

This is my go to spot in Auburn. Every time I've visited, the food and the service have been wonderful. I usually go for the famous crab cake and avocado sand which because it is remarkable. However this time I went with the Amsterdam Burger with sweet potato chips as the side. The burger was grilled to perfection and the chips were splendid. Service was a tad slow but I was there on a Sunday afternoon around 3:00 so I wasn't surprised nor was I in a hurry. As An added bonus the television was tuned to the SEC Network and they were replaying the 2013 Iron Bowl. I watched the kick 6 right before my meal arrived. Perfect timing / perfect lunch read more

I've been here once and had the salmon croquettes for lunch. The entire meal was not memorable except for the fact that the croquettes were pretty bland to me. I had to take everything home and kind of tweak them to be more palatable. I definitely want to give this place another try because it has such good reviews. read more

As I walked in, I was greeted with a smile and some fine service. Our waiter was friendly and looked happy to be there. I started with a delicious side caesar salad that was very yummy. Things were going good, and I was ready to leave a 5 star rating then and there. And then... my steak sandwich came. Hmm. It was ok at best, however my biggest complaint was that there was little to no steak at all, and mostly cheese and peppers. Also it's impossible to eat with your hands. I have been to Amsterdam Cafe twice now, and both times the food and service have been consistent, which is a plus for a college town eatery. The atmosphere is nice, upscale bar(ish) but not too "bar". What confuses me about this place, though is that the front of the restaurant is, like I said, upscale bar(ish), very warm and comfy, but in the back there is an afterthought of space that looks like it came out of the Studio 54 era. Shiny, disco-ey, a little odd. I think that is an extra bar for flow-over or something - which I can understand, in light of the fact that this place is in downtown Auburn! You might have noticed from some of my other reviews that I'm quite the fan of crab cakes - Gotta try them everywhere I go. And in Amsterdam's case, theirs is served as a sandwich with avocado and I can tell you, it's one of the best I have had! Can't go wrong ordering this one. Their crab cake is not just crab meat and mayo with a little breadcrumb action going on - they have some red bells chopped up in there and some other tasty veggies, too. The spice on it is spot on, and the avocado was just the perfect touch. I also like the Fried Green Tomatoes, which are done really well - not greasy, and the tomatoes are fresh and crispy - as they should be. Also not to be missed on the appetizer menu are the Blue Crab Dip - I'm not a big seafood dip girl, this one is not too fishy, sooo good - and, of course, the Lobster Egg Rolls. For lunch, the Fried Green Tomato BLT, Black and Bleu Steak Sandwich and, as mentioned, the Crab Cake and Avocado sandwich are all good choices. Everything was fresh, and they even had some local ingredients listed in the menu items, which should be a given, considering Auburn has access to good local produce ... being on "THE PLAINS" and all. read more

On our way from Atlanta to Montgomery we were looking for a good lunch spot. After passing lots of suspect highway sushi and hibachi places we spotted this place on Yelp. Though the reviews were good we had no idea what to expect in this part of Alabama. Overall, we we really happy with our experience, from the service to the food we ate. The only negative would be the overall cost of our meal. It was overpriced. We got the lobster egg rolls based on a lot of positive reviews, but we couldn't detect any lobster in them. They most likely grind it up into small bits and then mix it with other stuff. They were tasty, but didn't warrant the $13 cost when they tasted like regular egg rolls. We had this squash bisque that was excellent. Topped with pumpkin seeds, this soup tasted like fall in a bowl ($8). We split a crabcake sandwich that was excellent. I'd easily get that dish again. At $13 it was a good value with lots of crab. Our server, Lauren D, was really great as well. Exactly what you'd expect for Auburn Alabama. We'd definitely stop here on another roadtrip through Alabama. read more

I went to Amsterdam Cafe today and was extremely impressed. We sat down and immediately was approached by a kind server. He was funny but also serious about his job and took great care of us. My friend ordered the Yardbird which came with fries. She really enjoyed the taste of everything and said it was well done. I ordered the steak and eggs at medium rare. Hands down the best food in town. This place is a bit unassuming and runs the risk of not being taken seriously given its location. It is nestled next to a corner gas station- which takes away a bit of the charm. However, once you step inside and view the menu, you know you are in a place that truly values fresh, local foods. Many of the dishes include ingredients from nearby farms. As such, the menu also reflects the seasons and places emphasis on what is in harvest. My entire experience at Amsterdam Cafe was a delight. We sat outside and despite close proximity to the gas station, the patio seems like its own little world. We ordered some really yummy apps and glasses of white wine to begin our lazy afternoon. Our server complemented our experience and was able to appear when we needed her without intruding on our conversations. Our main courses were divine and we hardly spoke a word during our feast. I have to say that it was more than a simple meal, it was a real experience. This was a highlight to my trip, for sure! read more

Had the crab cake and avocado sandwich along with a side of seafood gumbo for $13.50 at lunch. The gumbo was very good... it had a pretty dark roux with lots of sausage, shrimp, and vegetable pieces in it. Very good portion. It costs $1.88 to add it as a side but I would certainly recommend it. The crab cake sandwich was a let down. The croissant was light and buttery, but the cake itself was quite small and lacked a good flavor. To me, it seemed like the filler (mayo, veggies) was a little too heavy compared to the actual crab meat within. The avocado was a nice addition to the sandwich though. I'd go for lunch, as I didn't feel most of their menu items were worth the $20+ dinner price tag. read more

All the other "nice" establishments were closed on Sunday (it is Alabama, after all,) so the girlfriend and I ended up dining at Amsterdam for her 21st birthday. We have eaten here multiple times before, but the food was especially good this visit. New chef maybe? The girlfriend had the best pork chop I have ever tasted, and I had the carbonara pasta. Good for Auburn. I've had some great food here, but also some pretty mediocre stuff as well. The wait staff are typically very good. Crab cake and avocado sandwich is consistently good. Their burgers can be awesome, but sometimes dry. The black and bleu steak sandwich was difficult to eat. some parts were like chewing on a rawhide. I don't know why this Maryland girl (me) keeps thinking I can get any type of decent crab cake in the south. Maybe because the menu said it was voted "100 things to eat in Alabama before you die"? How could that many people be so wrong? The crab cake and avocado sandwich had a lot of unrealized potential: crab, avocado, remoulade sauce and mango salsa. But the crab was mushy, the green pepper was the dominant flavor, and the mango salsa lacked the acid needed to perk the whole thing up. The coleslaw could have benefitted from a pinch of sugar, salt and black pepper. It was totally bland. My hubby had the chicken and waffle slider special with fries. It was really good, which is why I settled on a 3 star review. Service was satisfactory, but not outstanding. read more

My favorite place in Auburn. I went twice during our visit to AL and loved it both times. The service was phenomenal; our waitress went above and beyond to accommodate my fiancé's love of sugar-free Red Bull and vodka by actually sending someone to the corner store to buy some. The first time we had the lobster rolls as appetizers and they were great. My fiancé's filet was one of the best he's had and my lamb burger stuffed with goat cheese was delicious. The second time, however, was extraordinary. He loved our tuna tartare appetizer while I loved the guacamole and crab salad that it came with. As entrées, he stuck with the great filet-- it came with white asparagus spears, which we've missed since we left Germany and truly pleased us. As for me, I got a truly phenomenal pork chop bursting with apple flavor, and the sweet potato chips were addictive. The only downside was the mac and cheese- rather strange and sour tasting with odd bits of smoky meat (perhaps bacon?), but it doesn't bring down the pork chop. I could rave about that pork chop for days- buttery, and yet apple-y, with a stewed slice of plum on top. If this all sounds amazing, the highlight was still yet to come- dessert. The chocolate pot de crème was truly to die for. I won't describe it further because I might never stop. I get it every time and never have enough. The servers are extremely polite and do what they can to make the experience special. Not only is the service fantastic, the food is absolutely delicious. Staff is extremely friendly/ food is great. Typical American type foods- Salmon, sandwiches, hamburgers, salads,etc. Very good for lunch! After you eat you can go right next store for a coffee at mama mochas too. Location is right in the downtown area but the parking is super decent! You know how it can be sometimes with parking in downtown...... but they have spots for you to park on the right and left side of that strip of stores it's attached to. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go to while I've been in Auburn. Great food! There have been some mistakes throughout my dining experiences, but none that were drastic enough to keep me from going here. The pimento cheese board is to die for! It is very good. I spent five years in Auburn, and Amsterdam was always hit-or-miss. My biggest complaint is that they segregate their dining area into student (read: young people) and non-student blocks. Under the assumption that college-age kids tip less, my girlfriend and I were consistently seated in the worst spots. Our friends experienced this as well. Take it or leave it. The food was pretty good. On my first visit, I feel in love with their duck breast/risotto dish. And do believe the hype surrounding the crab cake/avocado sandwich. All in all, this is a pretty good place to go for a night out. They don't take reservations, so be prepared to wait about an hour or more for a table on Friday or Saturday. read more
