Amsterdam is a great restaurant for college kids to go for a special occasion (birthday dinner or parents in town). When you go you'll spend a little more money than usual, but it's worth it. Lobster egg rolls are great and the Sunday brunch is amazing. read more

Eating at Amsterdam Cafe is like watching a Disney movie, you just never know when someone is going to put balls on something you are enjoying. Seriously, I really did want to like this place. They market towards folks, like myself, who want fresh local ingredients and a simple menu. However, this restaurant does not deliver the quality and freshness that seems to be described on the menu. I have eaten at this place several times during the past three years, and I have had a couple of tasty and pleasant dining experiences there. But the quality has appeared to be declining over the past year, and after my last couple of experiences with the food, I will NEVER EVER eat there again. About a week ago I ordered a pepper jack chicken with fries as a to-go order. When I opened my box of food, I was disgusted by what I saw, and even more so by what I tried to eat. The sandwich was so sloppily put together that it looked worse than something from a fast food restaurant. Also, there was probably only about half a breast worth of chicken shredded up in it, so it was mostly bread. To make matters worse, it was completely missing the pepper jack cheese. Furthermore, my fries were not only overcooked (mostly dark brown with some smaller black ones), but also cold (not even remotely warm). I returned with my order and received a properly prepared sandwich and fries. Both were rather tasty and the fries were hot and golden with green bits of parsley seasoning the top (parsley was not even on my first order). I also received a $10 gift certificate to make up for the poor quality of the food. Today I used the certificate to order a Plains Burger. The burger was actually pretty good. Although it is not settling well after I discovered that my pickle had a bite taken out of it. At first I thought it might just be broken, but when I looked closely I could see clear teeth marks! How disgusting. Also, the fries were overcooked and not as fresh as they should be for the cost. They were the lowest quality I would accept from McDonalds, so they were hardly delicious. I should also mention that the Caesar side salad I ordered was not well chopped. The pieces of lettuce were enormous and I had to cut them myself if I did not want to try to stuff the giant leaves into my mouth and get dressing all over my face. Any salad chef who is attentive and professional knows to cut the lettuce into pieces that can be politely consumed by the customer I think that this restaurant has a good concept and it could be one of the best in town, but that would require that the food is properly prepared and that the staff does not sabotage a dish by eating off the plate or on the line (who knows where the bite was taken, not to mention by whom). Management needs to get their act together and fire the unprofessional (and unhygienic) members of the staff. It is these people that keep this restaurant from achieving its potential. read more

We visited on a quiet Sunday afternoon, after the brunch rush. We needed a quick bite after drive from GA. I ordered the crab cake, avocado handheld. It was tasty but not sure worthy of the high praise in the reviews. It was an average, perfectly fine crab cake. Sweet Potato chips as the side were great. My husband ordered the ribeye steak and eggs. He thought it was cooked well, smothered in onions with home fries--very good. My son had the Cuban pork sandwich-yummy! We think it is the unsung star, although the fries were just average. Overall, satisfying meal, quick and attentive service, with the prices in line with quality of food. Amsterdam cafe is known for their Turkey Wraps, Sweet Potato Chips and honey mustard sauce. All food we have had there has been enjoyable. The down side is the wait-time, rushed-ness of the staff and the fact that they crowd a larger party into a small high top table. They do not accept reservations and wait time can be quite long. Also, be prepared if you are wanting to go in the fall. I was VERY disappointed when I tried to call 3 different weekends to place a to-go order for a turkey wrap. We were told us to call back in an hour that they had just opened and were busy. We called back to hear the response "we aren't taking to-go orders we're too busy". My family owns several businesses and I am of the belief that you should plan your staffing meticulously, because if people are calling with money you jump through hoops to please that customer. I really wanted to like this place. The service and the atmosphere was great! The food however was very underwhelming. I had the salmon salad and the sweet potato chips. The salmon on the salad was cooked perfectly and had amazing flavor, my main complaint was the amount of lettuce, mango and walnuts on the salad. For $12, I expected more that a quarter cup of lettuce and a few mango chuncks. The sweet potato chips were bland....zero seasoning. Terrible experience!! I've always enjoyed visiting this restaurant but I will NOT be returning again. We made a reservation for lunch and took my 89 year old grandmother who was looking forward to the food/experience. They booked a high top for us which would not work for my grandmother. When we asked if we could sit in a booth (or anywhere besides a high top), they informed us they had no spots available. During our conversation I pointed out a booth that was empty, but they told us it was booked for a reservation an HOUR AWAY from when this conversation was taking place. Nobody seemed to understand how bad that sounds to a customer, and they didn't seem to care if we walked out the door or not! I understand scheduling reservations at a busy restaurant is tough, but the only option we were given by staff was "sorry, we cannot accommodate you". The manager/supervisor was not helpful at all and even made a smart comment to me as we were walking out the door insinuating the whole issue was our fault. Yes, we could have requested a booth when we made a reservation, but resolving the issue in a professional manner to accommodate the customer was not happening. I have been a patron of Amsterdam Cafe since 1992. The dinner service has steadily decreased. My worst meal and service was this past weekend. The wait for two was only twenty minutes which was good for a Saturday night. My husband and I went to the bar in the back. The bar was not full and it took about ten minutes to get waited on. It took another 5 to get one drink, then the bar tender did not remember what to make for the second drink. By the time my husband got his drink, our table was ready. The drinks were good, but the service was lacking. We had a good table and cordial waiter. He did not review any specials. The Tuna Lettuce Wraps were the best part of the evening. My gut instinct told me to go with my favorites (Crab Cake sandwich or Turkey Wrap) but I decided it was dinner and a night I did not have to cook for our family of five so I ordered Scallops ($25.88). The presentation was awful. It looked unappetizing. The Scampi Sauce looked like marshmallows on top of sweet potatoes. It was room temperature at best. I could not eat the lentils and the carrots were undercooked and very crunchy. I only ate the scallops. It was so bad I would suggest taking it off the menu. Interestingly the waiter never asked if we liked our meal and could obviously see I only ate the scallops and a few carrots. My husband's meal was ok. Overall we spent $130 for a mediocre meal and service. It left us feeling we wasted our time, money, and rare date night without children. I will probably go back for lunch only and hope the bar service has improved by then. My daughters enjoy it for a nice mother/daughter lunch spot. read more

My only issue is that the bread on the sandwich used to be a really good whole wheat foccacia, however they changed it to a thick sliced plain white bread. The Amsterdam manages to combine a casual place to eat with five star culinary expertise. Sort of like being welcomed into the kitchen of a top rated chef wearing jeans. Quail waffles app with a marmalade reduction a hit. Crab cakes...we try crab cakes all over the country and they seldom get it right or even close BUT Amesterdam nailed it. Chesapeake Bay quality. Very surprised and satisfied at the quality, service and ambience of this restaurant. We had initially decided on two other restaurants but both were closed on Mondays thus we chose Amsterdam Cafe. Lucky for us it was "wine night" so we had a bottle of delicious Zinfandel. I was hoping for an Alabama IPA on draft but didn't see any. The three of us shared a watermelon salad and a pimento cheese board to start. The pimento cheese was fabulous and enough for four...went perfect with the wine. For main course my daughter had the gyro which she enjoyed and my wife and I both had the Crab cake and avocado sandwich. Now, we live in Maryland and have had many crab cake sandwiches and platters so, in all fairness, the sandwich could not compare with those we've had. However, it was still good although IMO I think the croissant detracts from the Crab cake and makes it harder to eat... I think a Kaiser roll might be better...and more spice in the crab. One of our favorite places to go. Not a chain, good atmosphere and service. Some think it is a little noisy but I enjoy the chatter. Crab cakes, soups, bread, turkey wraps/ sandwiches, odd pizzas, hummus, not crazy but good assortment of beer, and steaks are my choices of excellence. My wife loves the cobb salad, EVERYTIME (always fresh locally grown). There are some exotic items that rise above my price range but others seem to enjoy who are on corporate accounts. She asked me if it was ok and I told it was fine, but at that point I didn't want anything else. My girlfriend got the hummus which came with saltine crackers and was black beaned based....not sure where they came up with that idea. I guess their old Chef had a better rendition of the hummus. We are locals and eat here several times a year. We had lunch here on Friday and were very disappointed. I ordered my favorite dish - the crabcake sandwich and selected sweet potato fries/chips as my side dish. After waiting an unusually long time for our food, when it finally came my sweet potato chips/fries were obviously overcooked. I figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt, but after tasting a couple of them, I determined they were inedible. When my waiter finally returned, I mentioned to him that they were clearly overcooked. He apologized saying that they are very difficult to cook just right. He checked the back then returned to say that all the chips looked that way (overcooked), and he was sorry. Didn't ask if he could bring me a substitution or offer to reduce my bill. Essentially, it was simply "too bad, so sad". The cost of lunch is a little on the high side for the area, so I would expect that I'm paying extra for the service which clearly was substandard. read more

I hadn't eaten at Amsterdam in a while and was interested in trying a couple of things I hadn't tried before. Before the criticism, the scallops are still one of the dishes that Amsterdam excels at, and the smokey/tangy sprouted lentils are delicious. That said, the two dishes I hadn't had there before were the lettuce wraps and the pepper crusted tuna poke. First, and this applies to both dishes, if your avocado requires a sharpened knife to cut because it is so hard, don't serve it! I don't know anyone who enjoys crunchy avocado. Second, anyone who has ever been to Hawaii and had the real thing would not recognize what the Amsterdam menu calls poke as poke. This was standard (and kind of stringy) seared yellowfin with the same scallion chili sauce used in the lettuce wrap. It is not poke. Look it up. I should have known there was something wrong when the server recommended the poke "rare", so my bad! The lobster rolls and cobb salad were their usual well made deliciousness. read more
