We have loved Amsterdam. This evening we had a reservation at the Gay Street location for 7:30 p.m. for 4 people. As we were seated and enjoying our drinks and appetizers, 2 other guests we invited and thought had declined showed up. We kindly asked to be reseated or possibly divide. The hostess never returned after telling us she would check. Our waitress was highly annoyed when we asked her and said it would be too much trouble to move the stuff (the 2 drinks and 2 appetizers) and that there was no availability. By this time it is 8 p.m. and there are at least 8 empty tables in the front portion of the restaurant including one 6 top and 4 empty tables outside with no one waiting for a table. We asked for our check, went to another restaurant and were immediately seated and served. This was such a disappointment as we previously loved Amsterdam for a nice dining experience. read more

The food has gone downhill over the years. Yet the prices are as high as ever! The ambience has also taken a hit because the restaurant packs in as many bodies as possible, which can make for an uncomfortable dining experience. Despite this, the service is excellent as always! Especially considering that they are the first to hear customer complaints, you'd never know it by their demeanor. Still an Auburn institution, but try to go during non-peak times. read more

Had a quick lunch here. The place is named "cafe" but it actually serves a full menu with a large collection of wine and beer. I had a steak frites, my friend ordered pan-seared salmon, and we shared a shrimp with grits. I had the steak medium but it came out more as medium rare, and a bit cold. The taste was alright. While the fries were crispy and nicely seasoned, the hero of the dish does disappoint a bit. Shrimp tasted fresh and the grits were OK, but seasoning was a bit too salty for my taste. My friend's salmon was also nice, but a bit too heavy in sauce. Overall, a passable place. read more

Nice place with a warm, yet casual atmosphere. Very close to Auburn Unv campus. Tonight I had the crabcake and avocado sandwich. The crabcake itself had decent flavor, but was a bit mushy and fell apart as I was eating it. Would be better if the crabcake had more of a crust on the outside, which this patty did not. The croissant exacerbated the situation as it did not hold the soft patty well and it too also fell apart. IMO not the best bread option for the patty. The remoulade was a great condiment for the sandwich. The mango salsa, I thought, was an odd concoction for the sandwich but it also worked well. This sandwich has a lot of hype on their menu, but I agree with many of the reviews that I have seen and the sandwich is just that which I have read - hype. I would give this sandwich a two out of five stars. I got a side of fries with the sandwich and they were crispy, battered nicely, and seasoned well. They have a good selection of draft beer and wine. Service was efficient. read more

Dropped by while supercharging in Auburn, AL. Great find. This place is located right on the edge of campus and has outdoor seating, which is a nice reprieve during COVID. Food: My colleague and I ordered the fried tomatoes w/crab topping, the walnut-apple salad (uses granny smith!), and two of their Crab Croissant sandwiches. These sandwiches are allegedly a "100 things to eat in AL before you die" lister. It was great! The crab sandwich had a very fluffy, warm, and crispy croissant. The crab itself was pretty meaty and not "all panko crumbs" like a reviewer mentioned a few years ago. I would recommend this dish. My colleague loved the fried green tomatoes. We are both big crab fans and he said this was the best fried green tomato dish he had ever tried (he has lived in the South before). My apple walnut salad was tasty - not too wet and not too dry - and I was left wanting to eat even more of it. Facility: The restaurant itself has installed plexiglass between booth stalls, which is nice. Unfortunately, seating was full when we arrived, so we risked our chances and ate indoors. Staff all wore masks, bathroom was clean and operational, and hand sanitizer was available upon restaurant entry. The only real issue was that customers kept their masks of for the entirety of their meals (vs. putting them back on between bites), but that's not the restaurant's fault. Overall: A must-try in Auburn, but make sure to get an outdoor table in 2021. read more

Been there 2x since original review. Second visit asked for burger well done, no pink. Came out pink center. Also, little 1 ounce ketchup cups not enough for burger & fries. They bring 1 at a time unless ask for 2 or 3. Third time, got bolognese. Looked/ tasted like hamburger helper. Service terrible. Hostess acting as only server mid-afternoon Saturday. What a gem! I am so happy I found this place on our way back from the beach, heading towards Atlanta. We went a bit out of our way to check out the Auburn campus and decided to grab lunch in the area. I picked Amsterdam Cafe based on the positive reviews, and am so glad I did! When our party of five walked in, the restaurant was still a bit busy so we were asked to wait for a table. Minutes later, we were seated at a large booth and shortly after, greeted by a server. Our server was young and likely a student. He was very easygoing and charming and made our meal enjoyable. He told us the best things to order and gave honest opinions. He also did not miss a beat on our meals. Based on his recommendation, I ordered the CEDAR PLANK ROASTED SALMON: ROASTED GARLIC & HONEY MARINATED SALMON, CREAMED SPINACH, FINGERLING POTATOES. At $13 for the lunch entree, I was not expecting much. Let me tell you, I was FLOORED by how delicious this dish was -- the salmon was seasoned and cooked perfectly. I was able to taste the garlic, the hint of honey, and the other spices that made this a perfectly delectable piece of fish. It was beautifully crispy on the outside and a light medium on the inside. Absolutely delicious. The sides were also delicious. I finished everything! Every piece of food on my dish was high quality and I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite. Everything was prepared fresh and you can easily tell these ingredients were prepared fresh and not the frozen food you'd expect from a college town restaurant. The Amsterdam Cafe is a highly-touted Auburn eatery offering dishes with local ingredients in the heart of campus. Our experience certainly lived up to the hype! With a bevy of enticing menu choices for lunch, I finally settled on the Yardbird sandwich. Delicious! Stupendously flavorful, lightly-spiced tender pieces of smoky roasted chicken were accompanied by masterfully cured local pickles and white barbecue sauce on the side. The sandwich was framed by a soft potato bun toasted on the inside, creating an impeccable combination of flavors and textures! The only downside? The menu claims to have peppered bacon on the Yardbird, but I didn't even taste a hint of bacon. Not even a hint! Perhaps they use microscopic pieces of bacon bits hidden amongst the chicken! That was awfully disappointing. If Amsterdam starts using actual slices of soft peppered bacon, this sandwich becomes a perfect 5! The dish came with a side of impossibly long french fries with a crisp outer shell, nearly perfect! The house-made kettle chips are also very high quality! Unfortunately, our attempts to order cheesecake for dessert were thwarted as they were all frozen. But we'll be back. read more

Amsterdam is my favorite "casual" find in Auburn. They have food for any individual with any dietary restrictions and preferences. I have been multiple times, and every time I find myself ordering the Pear Salad w| Salmon. It's delicious. The spinach & artichoke dip is also INCREDIBLE. The staff are all friendly making for a good experience! You can make a reservation via RESY.... Which I recommend on a gameday or busy weekend, but I have always been sat right away. read more

Well. I came to this place because of a recommendation from my banker here in Birmingham. She said I had to get the Turkey wrap because of the unique lahvosh cracker wrap. She said it gave the wrap a unique crispiness to it. Well. Mine didn't have that. Very bland and plain and way soft. If it wasn't for the honey mustard dipping, it's tasteless. Like literally nothing on but a tortilla, turkey, nothing else. Second dish was recommended by the waitress. The crab cake avocado sandwich. What a disappointment it was. I first tasted the crab cake itself. Definitely heavy with tuna and other stuff minus the crab. Second, I ate it as a sandwich and it's way too soft to be in a sandwich. Using croissant as bread was neat but overall, kind of bland and again, plain. The mustard like sauce was good and must be added to give any flavor. I would not get this nor whoever said this has to be 100 thing to eat before you die haven't travelled outside of Auburn. Lastly the general comfort and atmosphere. Lots of young people working. Everyone were very nice and well mannered. Some of the low tables and chairs were uncomfortable and they definitely didn't want my party of 2 to be seated in a booth. I later opted for high table with better cushioned seats. The solid wooden seats weren't for me. Overall, bit of a hype by my bank manager. Never would I listen to her advice on food. Oh. We randomly needed up at the Amsterdam Cafe this past weekend. We wanted a place to kill a few hours and have brunch and drinks. WOW! This place is awesome. The drink and food prices are great for the portion and quality. Eve our server and she was fantastic. Great personality and made us feel welcomed and she paid attention to details and never let a glass get close to empty. I had shrimp and grits and she had chicken and waffles. My husband and I were staying in Opelika for a pickleball tournament, and found this jewel in Auburn. It was way before the dinner hour, so there was no problem with parking or finding a table. Before we arrived at Amsterdam Cafe, Hubs complained that he didn't want "pub food." I assured him that the limited menu had plenty of variety, and surely he'd find something he liked to eat. He ordered the pork chop with assorted peas, greens, and a biscuit. He was blown away that it was cooked to perfection. He loved the accompanying barbecue sauce so much, that he asked for more to slather on the pork. I ordered a well made cup of tomato soup. It was rich and creamy, with Boursin crumbles floating on top. With the soup, I had the small Cobb salad with house made Gorgonzola dressing. It was a generous amount with lots of goodies that could barely fit in the bowl. I asked for half and half tea with lots of lemon. Rarely do I get more than one lemon slice. I got four!! Yay me! Our waitress was most helpful and cheerful. We LOVE this place!!! Don't miss it! read more

A group of friends and I were traveling from Birmingham to Columbus, GA and decided to stop in because of the great pictures and warm reviews. I can see why the community is so fond of Amsterdam Cafe! We were immediately sat at a hightop and served our drinks. The appetizer took no more than 10 minutes to get to our table and did not last half that amount of time before we devoured it. The hummus appetizer plate was amazing and I highly recommend it for its looks and taste. I had the Rum Salmon Salad and it perfectly met my appetite. Real cool environment also, it looks like a hole in the wall from the outside but once you go in the restaurant is actually very big and new. We went to the downtown Auburn Amsterdam Cafe. We first went to the other one (less nice, more of a fast food) and they were nice enough to direct us to the right one (similar menus, but not the same). We ordered a burger medium done. We received a medium well burger (tasted burnt). Service was nice and respectful but was so slow and barely showed up to give proper service. I ordered a grilled cheese and tomato soup. The grilled cheeses I make at home, all ingredients from walmart and from a 3 minute Youtube video, were better than this one. Although I will say the tomato soup was really good. To add on to the drama we had noisy teenage boys in front of us to make it even less enjoyable. Lastly, there was little to no service inside, but as soon as I stepped out, everything loaded. read more

It's perfect for a date night or eating with a group of friends because the menu has plenty to choose from. Sana was my waitress tonight and she was fantastic! I've been here a few times and most times my dishes have been good. The spinach dip, crab cake sandwich, and bread are delicious. I even recommend the pasta; it was full of flavor. The fried calamari with the dipping sauce was so good that we had to place a double order. The last dish that I ordered was the shrimp and grits, and I was completely underwhelmed. The sauce for the shrimp and grits was ok. It tasted a little bland as if it were missing something. The shrimp were jumbo and cooked perfectly. The grits, in my opinion, really brought down the entire dish. I'm not sure if mine were undercooked, but at the end of the day they were not good as the texture was off and the flavor was nonexistent. That one dish did not ruin my experience. All of the other food was good and the drinks were as well. The wait staff were very friendly every time. They were very attentive and speedy, even with a large party. Although I haven't tried it yet, I like that they have outdoor seating. And, I like that there is some variety on their menu.
