This is my love letter to Amsterdam Sushi: in my humble opinion, the greatest establishment on earth. As a regular, the all-day 2-roll and 3-roll specials with soup or salad are a godsend. I can only speak to their maki as far as the menu goes due to my commitment to ordering this special, but, their spicy tuna rolls NEVER miss, and they have quite the diverse menu. Spicy salmon, spicy yellowtail, sweet potato, oshinko, inari, eel skin, SALMON MANGO.... all delicious and satisfying. I am deeply grateful for their incredible spicy mix formula: the perfect amount of crunch, sriracha, and graciously light on the mayo. I find that many sushi restaurants are way too heavy on the mayo and it overshadows the fish! Not here! The spicy tuna especially is seriously perfect. The wasabi and gari are both great and the miso soup is perfect. (I have to attribute at least half of my deli cup collection to this order.) The interior is charmingly antiquated--it appears to be converted from an old Subway and retains several features of the old interior. They have a great in-house deliverista, sushi chefs who are always locked IN, and a cashier who I found charismatic, attentive, and careful, even when they were bombarded with orders at peak hours. The cashier simultaneously works like a MACHINE to package the takeout orders, which are always neatly and perfectly packed, with a recycled piece of cardboard to keep your hot soup separate from your fresh sushi. If you call to order, the phone operator will remember your last order and address for next time. (To order online, use Beyond Menu instead of the big corporate apps for no fees! And call directly for delivery!!!) I've also eaten in several times and it's always a pleasant and charming experience. The immediate area is somewhat of a food desert as far as affordable and nourishing takeout goes, so this place was a lifesaver when I lived around the corner. It was the first meal I had after moving in, and would become my ol' reliable for all of my time there. Missing this place is truly the saddest part about moving out of west Harlem. This is my favorite sushi in NYC to date! I order here via Uber Eats often, for the past few years actually, and I've never had any issues. Sushi is always fresh and the rolls aren't too big which I like! My favorite thing to get here is the "buy two or three rolls" which comes with a side like miso soup or a salad for a really affordable price. It's been my go to on the busy or lazy days. Their delivery is absolute garbage. Do not order delivery directly from them. Delivery person refused to come up to the apartment so I had to come all the way down. This is hands down some of the best sushi you can get in the neighborhood at an unbeatable value. After ordering delivery from here a few times, I've figured out my favorites-- though honestly was not disappointed by anything. The sushi pizza has officially replaced Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna as my favorite spicy tuna indulgence: it has a similar appealing contrast of textures and temperatures between the disparate ingredients but is leveled up thanks to the added bonus of seaweed salad and the flavor of the scallion pancake: don't miss this one. I also enjoyed the tartare and dinosaur egg apps for some hefty dose of sashimi chunks with avocado but now I just order two sushi pizzas since my hubby and I are obsessed with it. The "any three rolls" for 16 bucks is a wildly good deal-- and comes with a drink, soup or salad. I like to get the salmon avocado roll, spicy tuna, and spicy salmon or the Alaska roll. All are excellent in their own right but I really am always impressed by how fresh and buttery the salmon is. And the miso soup is good too: no skimping on the wakame and tofu so it's legit. Toss in some gyoza and you are set for the night. I haven't eaten in person, but the delivery is always so prompt and the food so fresh I haven't yet felt tempted. I ordered from here on uber eats the other night, for the price it was pretty good. Not the best sushi I've ever had but it was decent for price, time I ordered and the delivery time. The spicy crab roll was pretty average, spicy shrimp was okay, spicy tuna was my favorite, although none of them really tasted spicy compared to other places I've ordered from. I was in a explorative mood. The red bean milk tea had the funky taste of red beans and the milk and sugar gave it a drinkable taste. Of note, the shrimp tempura roll is not on the menu and normally, you get two tail pieces in a roll but it came with none which kinda felt like a cheat. It also didn't taste all that fresh but for the price, what was I expecting? What I really didn't appreciate is that the first time I came, I ordered bubble tea and wanted to pay with a card, lady says there's a $10 min. I come back to sit and eat and when someone else orders food, she says there's a $15 min for card. That's unprofessional and a cheat. She let him pay with a card when he was about to leave though. Very upsetting. Their taro and almond bubble tea is delicious, however, they put too much damn ice, all the way to the top of the pretty small cup. They are cheaters here man. read more

I am simply dumbfounded that this place has such high reviews. I ordered a bento box and the two roll special. The bento box chicken had black veins running through every. Single. Piece. Of chicken. Every piece. I've never seen such an occurrence in chicken breast. The gyoza were soggy and broken open on the bottom but the seamed end was so hard/dehydrated it could break a tooth. For some reason they included a container of ketchup? Sushi + ketchup? The rolls... visibly slimy. Browned avocado... it could be because they packaged the cool sushi on top of the warm bento box without consideration. Yum! This may be why I have food poisoning. I ate three bites of rice and one bite of gyoza from the bento box, one piece of sweet potato roll and didn't even touch the tuna roll. My body is SO angry. The women at the front does not keep her mask on to protect against covid. She touch her hair, eyes and skin and then packages the food. It's disgusting. One of the men at the front slicing the fish has his nose uncovered (anything can drip from you nose). Who knows what they (or anyone else) is doing in the back kitchen area it's so gross. I believe it's a old Subway, so the inside looks kinda weird, but the food is very good and a good deal (My grubby ass can get three sushi rolls and an appetizer for under $20). Because its a converted Subway, def not a date-night Japanese place, but there are seats, if you need to grab a quick meal. I mainly do delivery or take out from here and the delivery is pretty quick. I've spent many a discretionary dollar here and plan to spend many more. read more

This has been my go to takeout (and sushi) place in NYC throughout COVID. It is such a good deal for 2 or 3 rolls and soup, and good variety of options (even for vegetarians!). Pretty solid portions and delicious. They tend to be quick with delivery too. I also love that I can get boba here. It's not the most amazing boba ever but its also a good deal and tastes pretty good. I do wish I could adjust the sweetness of the boba but otherwise I am very happy. I already know I will miss this spot and deal when I leave NYC! read more

New favorite sushi place in the neighborhood! This place is very comparable to Geisha sushi, but more convenient because it's across the street from CCNY. Both have the 2 and 3 roll specials. Geisha has a student/Yelp discount, so I would go there to get the lunch specials + discount, or to dine-in. Amsterdam is more of a take out place, has the specials all day, AND WHITE TUNA included! I go to Amsterdam if I'm craving white tuna or it's not lunch time anymore. The owners are friendly as well, such a welcome addition to the area. Side note: Amsterdam sushi's prices and variety are much better than at Sushi Sushi (which has a more expensive lunch special, a laughable selection of rolls included in the lunch special, and no student discount).
