Came in with a large group of 9 and was on a time crunch. The staff was extremely helpful in helping us order with that in mind and got the food out to us promptly. I wished the chicken was a bit more tender but it was overall delicious and I would definitely return.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]When you walk in there's an open space with just a stand for the host. They walk you back to the left where the tables are located. On the walls there's different hand paintings of music artists.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were sat right away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We got there about the time they open and they were already busy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Seem to be only 2 waitress and 2 gentleman who took care of water and dirty dishes. Although they were very nice service was kind of slow. They offer mimosas and wine. The food did not disappoint. They give the table cornbread to start. It was moist. We both got fried chicken with 2 sides. The only difference is mine was dipped in honey. The chicken was fried to perfection! The macaroni and cheese was cheesy no real complaints about it. We were talking to a few people around us and they said the Mac and cheese has been better. The greens were delicious. I couldn't tell if they were collard or mustard because they were cut up fine. They definitely weren't that. I enjoyed the yams as well. They weren't too sweet.
My best friend and I visited on a cold Saturday night and were promptly seated. We called in advance to ensure that there was no wait. The food came out pretty quickly and the restaurant was pretty quiet because there weren't many other patrons. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The music was good and the back was nice and warm because there was a heater.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We both ordered the Barack Obama and we both enjoyed our food to perfection. My sides included mac & cheese, yams, and collard greens, all of which I enjoyed very much. My friend ordered mac & cheese and okra and loved her dish as well. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful. I hadn't been to this restaurant since I was a child, so it was a nostalgic experience. The next time I visit Harlem, I would definitely return again.
A consistent neighborhood staple with amazing food, service, portions and prices. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You can never go wrong with stopping in here for a homey comfort meal whether with a group or solo.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They run a pretty tight ship and ask if you're dining or taking out upon entering. They bring out hot cornbread to the table once you sit and once you order, the food comes out fairly quickly. I love that the entrees come with two sides because it's a full meal and I always leave satisfied. And the prices are fair as well. Highly recommend! P.S. thanks for helping me bring in the New Year with some black eyed peas for luck ;)
Lovely meal! I ordered the honey dipped chicken with mashed potatoes and fried okra. The okra was the only thing I wouldn't write home about. I also ordered banana pudding. When I tell you the serving would feed 5 people. I mean it! Definitely recommend.
Amy Ruth's is a top soul food restaurant in NYC; though, the competition in this segment has become fierce around the five boroughs. I recently stopped by on a Saturday evening after Thanksgiving and the restaurant was well below capacity with everyone eating Thanksgiving leftovers. Charmaine took my order and a friend's order quickly, quickly followed by ice water and their customary cornbread. Their cornbread is always good. Both of us ordered the Al Roker beef short ribs, which come with two sides. I had the fries and collard greens. The Al Roker is the top price point on the menu at just over forty bucks, but it is the best in town, true to advertised on the menu. It bests that offered by Melba's for sure and keeps me from taking in more of the offerings on the Amy Ruth's menu. The greens are good, flavorful and not oversalted, nor oversalted. They are chopped up more finely than one is accustomed to fit into the small bowl in which they are served. The fries are good and fluffy inside, but not very crispy outside. They taste good and take well to some pepper and the gravy from the beef short ribs. The gravy gives poutine to the fries and a little extra gravy really dials it up. The star of the show is these beef short ribs that are as tender as they can be. They clearly evidence the marbling, but they are trimmed of excess fat. What you get is three large chunks of meat on your plate and I had already devoured one chunk, before taking the accompanying photo. You will be totally satisfied with this ultra savory and tender beef. The gravy adds so much unctuous flavor to your palate and fries leaving you very much satiated. You will not be hungry. I have seen some of the many waffle dishes come out to patrons and they all have looked great, especially the customary chicken and waffles. They have so many waffle dishes on their menu. I'll get around to them if I can take my mind off the Al Roker. My friend had the Herb and Eliza Boyd creamy banana pudding, served up so large, he couldn't finish it. I asked if that's the way they serve up their Neal Shoemaker peach cobbler and was told yes. Note to self next time and two people can share their desserts. [[HIGHLIGHT]]By the way, all their dishes are named after someone, many of whom are painted on the walls of the restaurant. It's a cool vibe and interesting take on the menu.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restroom was clean and Charmaine was efficient, serving everything with a smile.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 4.3 stars!
Many thanks to all of the amazing staff at Amy Ruth's for the lovely food, and hospitality for the afterpass of Mrs. Alice B. The food was cooked to perfection, the portions were generous, everything was seasoned nicely. I don't eat peaches, but I was given peach cobbler. The peach cobbler was heavenly. Everything tasted as if I was at one of my family members dinner table in the South. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Truly love everything about this location. It was the perfect space to host a large family gathering.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All of the family, and friends enjoyed an amazing time, and truly cherished the great meal.
Again, Amy Ruth's did not disappoint. There was no wait, we walked right in, were seated, and ordered immediately. We ordered the fried shrimp, pork chops, fish, and smothered turkey wings, and everything was outstanding. The service and the vibe matched the quality of the food. I will always recommend Amy Ruth's for great-tasting Southern comfort food. #HappyEating
Food was great! The cornbread was free and good with butter. Be prepared to have leftovers, I almost couldn't finish my sides platter. It was still a bit overpriced I will admit. The bathrooms are one-person, they were in need of a little touch up and there were no hooks inside to hold a bag but it was roomy.
This soul food spot looked very promising, but I was left feeling like there was a bit to be desired. Somehow the highlight ended up being the corn bread, which was absolutely delicious, but not necessarily what you would want or hope the highlight of the meal to be. The fried chicken was good, nicely crisp, but pretty dry. Mac and cheese came across as slightly more congealed, not quite a rich, creamy cheese sauce that I'd like. Buttered corn was delish, but it's just.. corn, so nothing crazy there. Peach cobbler was crying out for a nice scoop of ice cream on top, but alas. Service was nice, but took a long time. I guess that's in line with soul food vibes though
Found ourselves in the area and decided to swing by the famous Amy Ruth's. Service was friendly and efficient, and you could definitely tell it's an institution. Food was good, but the serving of chicken was smaller than expected given the price. Baked Mac and cheese was incredible and the sweet tea hit the spot! Was definitely a solid meal. Would recommend!
This place has the best fried chicken, and I've eaten a LOT of fried chicken, even in the southern states. It's very well seasoned, crunchy on the outside with a juicy, fall off the bone interior. The sides that come with it were also good. Generously portioned, we ordered 2 meals for the 3 of us and still had plenty of leftovers. The complimentary cornbread was also delicious. We were so full, so even though we wanted to, didn't order dessert. Which I regretted later as they were traditional southern desserts. A great family oriented place, with painted portraits of notable Black historical figures on the wall. Service is courteous and efficient.
The service was amazing, the food was not the best, it lacked flavor, the corn bread was dry and the candied yams were way too sweet, more like syrup. As bad as I wanted to love this food (especially as good as it looks), I didn't. The greens had a funny taste I couldn't put my finger on, but my mom tasted them and said they were from the can. The sweet potatoes were delicious, the Mac and cheese was eh and the ribs had a weird taste. Maybe I just tried the wrong dish, but not willing to spend another $30 to get it wrong read more

Simply amazing!! Waffles melt in your mouth! Chicken is juicy and perfectly flavored. Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were simply the best I've ever had. The food here has become the standard of food I will eat from now on. All of their places haven't topped my Amy Ruth's bar I've set yet. Rarely do taste and cooking execution come to the same level. Sometimes places season good, but the food just isn't right. Or the food is cooked perfectly, but it was bland. Not here. 100% recommended. read more

This is probably the best fried chicken I've had from a Chicken n Waffle House. The chicken is extremely crispy and the meat is cooked perfectly inside. The outer skin is so crispy it snaps as you break it apart. The waffle itself is sweet and cakey but not overwhelming. Their syrup is watery and isn't thick; this made things lighter tasting. The atmosphere is great! The songs playing throughout the restaurant are classic soul R&B music from the early 90's. I noticed people singing and dancing a long, having nice conovs, and enjoying amazingly great food. I ordered the Al Sharpton which is a waffle with one huge fried chicken breast. Everything was perfect. I also ordered kool-aid of the day which was grape and had a slice of lemon on the side of the cup. This for all $17 and free complimentary corn bread (they were bland and simple). This is the best in NY from what I hear so try it out! Great place to have chicken n waffles while enjoying good music. read more
AMBIANCE: Brings me back to the south. Good vibes, clean, colorful. LOCATION: Down one of those busy streets of NYC. Street parking. Id recommend walking. SERVICE: Seemed understaffed. We got sat immediately, but had to wait 10-15 mins before getting our waters. Another 10-15 minutes before they came back for orders and who knows how long before we got our actual food. FOOD: I got the infamous chicken and waffles expecting something that would blow my mind. I have only ever had chicken and waffles from Texas, so I didn't think I knew enough, but I knew that this was subpar. I am hoping it was just a bad day/plate. But I can only critique the dish I was served. Unfortunately, everything was cold, The fried chicken was not crispy as it should be. The waffle was bland. There was no overall flavor the the dish, it was as if I was eating straight starch on top of starch without any seasonings. I was very much disappointed. I will have to be convinced heavily to come back and give it a 2nd chance. PRICING: The price was reasonable. It was on par with other restaurants in NYC. I didn't expect it to be super cheap, but it was not overly expensive either. read more

The food was absolutely delicious. Enjoyed the chicken and waffles. The skin was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The grits were also on point. Taste took me back to breakfast in Mississippi at my grandmas house. My husband ordered the peach cobbler and was pleasantly surprised by the large portion they served. As far as the service, the people who attended to us were very attentive and polite. The bouncer at the door is really cool and does a great job of updating you with your wait times which isn't long (20 minutes on a Saturday). Our waitress was also kind and helpful. Overall it was a great experience and good times as always whenever we visit and dine at Amy Ruth's. read more
Amy Ruth's was my destination and reason for coming up to Harlem from Midtown. It was a great experience that I would gladly repeat, as I spotted several items on the menu I wish I had additional room in my tummy for. Next trip. The greeter at the door, who also directs folks to their table was super nice and friendly. So are were their customers, my fellow diners. While waiting for a table, I got some great recommendations from a New Orleans native for good authentic southern food in her hometown. The complimentary corn bread was really soft, moist and flavorful. A great way to start off. I was strategically planning on having just a couple of bites, but after the first bite, my whole plan went awry quickly, and, I finished the cornbread in its entirety, in just a few minutes flat. I got their famous fried chicken and waffles, along with the macaroni and cheese. The chicken must be fried to order, because it came out piping hot, just the way it would if you removed it from the bubbling hot oil at home. The waffle was generous in size with crispy edges, but parts of the center were softer than I would've preferred. And yes, the Mac and cheese was just as cheesy as Yelpers have described. I mean, cheeeesy! For me, that's a positive. Servers were all nice and prompt in this super casual environment. They have daily specials too. I'll be back to try their homemade chicken and dumplings. Inevitably, I'm certain there will be folks out there asking themselves if it's safe to come to Amy Ruth's. I can hear them thinking it now. "Is it safe in Harlem?", they're secretly wondering. I can only tell you that, as a woman, I came on a weekday afternoon, by myself, and felt totally 100% safe in Harlem. Never for a minute did I feel unsafe on the subway ride or walking around from Amy Ruth's to the Apollo Theater, and then to Bill Clintons' office. In fact, I felt a hundred times safer in Harlem, than I do in broad daylight in San Francisco's Tenderloin district or even in parts of touristy Union Square at night, both areas in San Francisco which are in a serious state of decay! That said, if you reside in the suburbs somewhere, and never leave your three mile comfort zone, except maybe for work, then maybe you should stay in Times Square. However, you'll be missing out on good southern food at Amy Ruth's, and missing out on life. read more
I feel this is on par with some of the finest cafeteria food I ever had. lol I guess the first clue shoulda been the abundance of white people here, like with any ethnic restaurant, when the locals don't eat here anymore, that's a problem. I had such high hopes for this place, I am a big fan of southern food and I love chicken and waffles but I was pretty disappointed to say the least. The food: The Rev. Al Sharpton- the chicken itself was nicely crisp, wasn't greasy but didn't offer a lot of flavor. We originally had a table for 17 but only 12 showed. We weren't allowed to seat until all members of our party arrived which is fine. This was my first time visiting since the remodel. Once we were seated our waitress quickly took our drink and food orders. Here's the tough part - with 12 people we waited over an hour for our food to arrive and one person didn't receive her food until we were more than 1/2 way done. But... the food did not disappoint!! I had the president Barack Obama - fried chicken with Mac/cheese and collards and it did NOT disappoint!! The servings are huge, my cousin ordered the short ribs and there was food to spare. I will definitely return the food is that good but don't be in a rush. read more
I never believed in the Chicken & Waffle craze before. But now I realize it's because I have had only unimpressionable experiences... until now! What I really appreciated was how light and fluffy the waffle was and how the syrup was more of a drizzly finish over the waffle rather than a molasses-and-thick sauce. The waffle and syrup paired really well with the chicken, which was piping hot and crunchy. It wasn't heavily breaded and crusted to the point where you had little chicken, but it was still crispy and juicy. Good balance of crust to chicken. We didn't get the corn breads on the house (we visited at 9 am on Saturday), which was unfortunate because the biscuit was nothing special. We couldn't order any of the items on the bottom half of the menu so if you want the cornbread, I would visit a little later. read more
I would go back here JUST to buy their corn bread (do they sell it as a side?) & take it home, eat it with every meal, and as an afternoon snack, a little wedge with dessert. It's THAT good. It's light, fluffy, & mildly tasty in the most unexpected way from the Southern cooking that I've had. (Or maybe I've haven't had proper corn bread?) tasted like the corn flour was just milled that morning. My meal continued on that note. We had just missed the hours for breakfast, so I ordered the Salmon Croquette entree with string beans & cheesy grits as the sides ($15.99). The croquettes reminded me of fresh falafel, but fish. There were carrots & I think cabbage in the salmon mixture (4 to an order), had a nice spice/salt & flavor kick to it. The string beans were very lightly buttered, slightly over cooked for my taste, but very comforting in a way. The cheesy grits were runnier than I expected, but soft & just mildly cheesy- a nice compliment with the salty croquettes. The coffee was very good as well. I definitely want to return for their other dishes. Ambience was a just okay-the front room looked like a large take-out place, there were side & back rooms with murals of famous African-American people. Furniture was simple & functional and very clean. Very good for groups. Our waiters was very nice & service speedy. The place was more than half full on a Thursday for lunch- that's all I care about! read more

This was the best soul food I've had all month long. Charmaine my server was hospitable and as sweet as pie. The house corn bread with butter was delicious! I ordered a chicken plate with dark meat, extremely juicy, with macaroni and cheese and some beans and rice. The food was popping hot and tasty. I must be honest. I'm from DC and know how southern food should taste. This majorily disappointed me. I got the ribs, mac and cheese and yams. The ribs were SMOTHERED in BBQ sauce, where tasteless and the sides also lacked real flavor. I have a feeling that when they first opened the chef was banging, but now it's not as great. When I looked around, others also left food untouched. I actually had carryout two hours later because I didn't feel I ate enough. I felt terrible for wasting it, but I wouldn't have given it away, not when it was that bad. When it doesn't taste good, it doesn't taste good. Seasoning food is not that hard. This meal failed in so many ways. Food should be enjoyed and a great experience. Now, my service: that was a 10/10. I felt welcomed coming through the doors. The server was excellent and my food came out with in a few seconds it seemed. The peach mimosa was really just peach flavored Mystic (or whatever) and Cava. That was OK. The price was affordable. The plate is big enough for two people. The location is a few feet away from 116th Street Station. I wouldn't recommened Amy Ruth's to anyone looking for authentic southern soul food in NYC. Amy Ruth's is the TRUTH! i lived in the South for many years and really loved the southern hospitality and the food there. so when i moved back to NYC, i found that all the so-called "southern" food were merely poor imitators, lacking soul and flavor. i was saddened and my relocated southern friends pointed me to Harlem, where soul food is good and in abundance. i came here on Christmas Eve with the bae. the place is spacious and the walls were filled with murals of prominent African American figures, we were seated right under His Airness himself. ;-) the busboy brought us cornbread as soon after. the corn bread was warm and crumbly, very good and got my anticipations even higher. the bae got ribs (with mac & cheese, fries), lemonade. i got the fried catfish (w/ mac & cheese, fried okra), and sweet tea. a breakdown of the food: -ribs: meaty, a bit dry and tough on some spots, just ok. -mac & cheese: right amount of cheese to pasta ratio, i don't like my mac too cheesy, this was just right. -fries: thick-cut fries, nothing too special. -fried catfish: three big, flaky catfish fillets coated with a thin batter. it was very light and well-seasoned, one bite and i knew this was it! this brought me right back to the South and even converted anti-pescaterian bae, he thought it was tasty and not fishy at all (which makes him dislike any fish). this was so legit! -fried okra: i LOVE fried okra, especially when they're lightly dusted with cornmeal, freshly fried, crispy, and still burning hot on the inside. this is quite possibly the best fried okra i've ever eaten. -lemonade/sweet tea: both VERY VERY sweet. don't get me wrong, i love my sweet tea, but this was just too sweet, had to add lots of lemon (*gasp） and water to offset it. i also got a peach cobbler to go, the crust was not the crumbly type i hoped for, but rather, thick, doughy-type and i'm not a big fan. the peach filling was kinda heavy with cinnamon, not a big fan either. despite some small flaws, Amy Ruth's is very authentic and very tasty. i really enjoyed the food and can't wait to go back! read more
Who's down for soul food in Harlem? After several recommendations to go to Amy Ruth's, we made it up here for some fried food. We got here early one Friday evening and were seated immediately upstairs. The restaurant itself is pretty big. They gave us some corn bread, which was buttery, moist, and delicious. After we ordered, the food came pretty quickly. I don't remember the names, but they were all named by iconic people. The portions are huge. Smothered Pork Chops (I think this was the Gabrielle Union) with Collard Greens & Fried Okra: The pork chops are enough to feed at least 2 people. They're covered in a gravy-like substance. The collard greens were pretty good, but pretty tart. The fried okra was delicious. I couldn't stop eating these fried suckers. Fried Chicken with Mac n Cheese & Cheese Grits: This place is well known for their fried chicken, so of course we ordered some. The large pieces of chicken were savory and crunchy, albeit a little dry. It might not have been a good idea to order macaroni & cheese AND cheese grits. The macaroni was thick and dense, while the grits were more of a creamy consistency. The prices are pretty reasonable ($15-$20) for the portions, but I would have preferred to pay less for a little less quantity. Still, the food was pretty decent and the service was good. After we finished, we desperately needed to walk off the fried food we inhaled. read more
Amy Ruth's is good, but not great. I would definitely give this place 3.5 stars. For those of us that are African American and grew up eating soul food, just know that your grandma and Auntie can cook much better food than what's being served at Amy Ruth's. On the bright side the portion sizes are really big and you will definitely leave stuffed. The decor of the restaurant is truly what makes it special, the walls are covered in portraits of influential African Americans in history. Amy Ruth's is definitely a New York classic, however do not come here if you're looking for the best soul food in Harlem. read more

Substantial, delicious dishes that will fill up your heart and your stomach!! My friend's boyfriend recommended us this place as having great breakfast near CUMC and I could not agree more. We were the first to arrive when they opened their doors (my friend had a flight to catch and I had class to go to) and our server Jamie was so kind. He's very friendly and welcoming! We wanted to share some of the entrees but unfortunately it was too soon as they only had breakfast and waffle options available. Nevertheless, I ordered the fried chicken with 2 eggs sunny side up and grits while my friend had her fried chicken with a waffle. The dark meat fried chicken was massive, very crispy, and perfectly seasoned. It didn't have any of the excess batter on it so I'm not sure what the secret was but it reminds me of my favorite fried chicken place back in Thailand. The eggs were well cooked and the grits were just okay (I'm not a big fan of grits in general). My friend's waffle was very well done. It wasn't crispy but it was very filling and chewy and had a nice sweet, yet savory flavor to it (prob from the fried chicken juices). You do have the option to smother your fried chicken but we opted to get it on the side so the chicken would still stay crispy! Ooh and the complimentary biscuits/cornbread? came out piping hot and buttery! I just ate them by themselves and really enjoyed the flavor. read more

Went to order take out with two friends. I got the pork and waffles and both friends ordered chicken and waffles. It definitely delivered its soul food title. I couldn't finish the food I was so full. The seasoning on the pork was perfect and it was perfectly fried nice and golden, crisp on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The chicken looked equally delicious. I would 100% come back and I'm glad I tried Amy Ruth's. As the food was compartmentalized in separate take out boxes I didn't take a picture, but take my word. read more

Ever since I was told about Roscoe's in LA, I've been hankering to have me a nice heaping pile of chicken 'n waffles. Good thing Sean answered my prayers and brought me to Amy Ruth's, the famous New York equivalent of the Southern Cali eatery (I'm guessing), located right in the heart of Harlem. Amy Ruth's impressed me from the start with an amazingly friendly waitstaff (greeted at the door and welcomed in with a smile!) and its clean, modern-looking interior. At 11 AM, it was unfortunately too early to order some good and salty collard greens. But we were just as excited to order each of ourselves the standard Reverend Al Sharpton... aka, a Belgian waffle topped with fried chicken and smothered in gravy. Once the good reverend arrived in front of me and was slathered with enough butter, syrup, gravy and hot sauce to my liking, I took a big, juicy bite of the sweet, savory goodness and indulged in the deflowering of my chicken n waffle virginity. Who woulda thought? I thoroughly enjoyed my first five bites, where after it got to be a bit much. So as to not waste half my order, I managed to pick at the majority of my dark meat chicken wing. As far as flavors go. I'm more of a salty than sweet person anyway. Now that I've finally witnessed for myself the ultra-indulgent combo, I think it's safe to say that I can only handle this kinda thing about once a year (which won't be hard to do, seeing as how the only places I know of serving up chicken waffles are in LA and NY). If you're in this city, I'd say it's definitely worth your time to experience Amy Ruth's, ESPECIALLY if you're on a budget... for 10 bucks, Reverend Al Sharpton kept my appetite at bay for a good 8 hours... probably could have been more, had Sean and I not spent the rest of the day walking it off through Soho and Chinatown. I have visited this restaurant several times in the past and the food has not changed much. The corn bread is far from the best and is always a little hard. The ribs are just OK in my opinion but I love the fried chicken. The side dishes I choose are always the same (mac n cheese with collard greens) but they are excellent. Loved the location, loved the restaurant, loved our waiter, and loved the food! I ordered the Rev. Al Sharpton's dish, which comes with crispy waffles and 3 pieces of fried chicken. The meat was juicy and succulent, while the skin was just unbelievably fried to perfection! I rarely go to Harlem for food because it is out of my way and not convenient. However, this place is a hidden gem for me because I did not know this place existed until my friends told me. I believe this place is good for fried chicken so we all ordered fried chicken. The fried chicken was good and the frying was not over fried nor under fried. They were fried just right. The coating was done right as the crust was crispy and and not too thick. The chicken did not taste oily as well. The chicken wings are huge compared to what you can get from other places. I ordered the al sharpton which was chicken and waffles smothered, we also ordered shrimp and grits, Mac and cheese burger and a whole bunch of sides like collard greens, fried okra, Mac and cheese and cabbage. My husband thought it was just ok. Actually so did my son. They were annoyed that they wasted precious stomach space on food they felt was mediocre. They like Popeyes better. I will always love AmyRuth's as long as they don't change their recipe, I traveled all the way to Harlem from Queens to pick up take out during this pandemic & it was worth it. I had the Fisherman's Platter ($25) , fried catfish, fried shrimp , crab cake , mac and cheese and yams as my sides. And I ordered a side of potato salad ($6) , 1 piece of cornbread came with it & even that was perfect. Great and fast service, the women up front were very friendly. read more

Is the fried okra fresh or frozen?
It appeared to be fresh and the batter they were fried in was not flavourful, at least not the day I ordered it.

If you are making a day in NYC, it is worth it to add this to the end. It is 3.5-4 hours RT plus all the tolls from Philly. Try pairing this with a walking tour of Harlem. If you are in Philly, try Miss Nancy's in Merchantville, New Jersey.
