Amazing spot for soul food in Harlem. The food here speaks for itself and the restaurant itself is pretty bare bones but really gives you an authentic soul food experience. Many famous people have dined here and there's always people waiting for takeout here. The dining room is tucked away so don't get lost in everyone who's waiting out front. I came here for lunch on a Tuesday with a group and we were seated right away. The staff were quick and efficient and the food came out quickly; everything was hot and fresh. I got the honey dipped chicken with corn and French fries. It was absolutely delicious, the chicken was cooked to perfection - juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The corn was a shocking favorite as well, it had a unique texture and flavor unlike anything I've had before. I'll definitely be back here to get my soul food kick! read more

Wanted to try get some chicken and waffles and Amy Ruth's had some. We were from out of town and a little unfamiliar with the area. We walked a couple blocks from subway station to get to restaurant. I wouldn't recommend doing this to any tourist. The area is not the nicest, maybe take an Uber there if you would like to try. The food however, was amazing! The chicken was so nice and toasted, the corn bread was fresh and warm! Loved the food. The service, wasn't the best if I am being honest. We got welcomed, but not checked up on, we were brought our drinks after our food was at the table. There was also an automatic gratuity fee applied to our check, so beware. I really wanted to have soul food in Harlem and this place was highly recommended even amidst all the great choices in the area. Honestly, it delivered and I had a positive experience here. Loves: + Good food (I had the Reggie Harris and loved it) + Fun names (eg. The bathroom (decent)! The seating was good! The entirety felt good and great. My meal.... So I ordered the chicken and waffle combo (I forgot the actual name of the meal) but I added bananas and cinnamon my waffles (with and order of cheesy grits and collard greens). You're given one complimentary cornbread (which was warm and a bit flaky) but I enjoyed it. I added (cold) syrup (already on the table) with one packet of butter. But felt like it was missing something though.. Split the cornbread as if it was burger buns and enjoyed it...savored it. Now for my meal.... I was always never a fan of grits because I just thought it was gross. Can't lie about that. Barely ordered it, had a bad experience one time; never again! But here at AMY RUTH's I did honestly enjoy it but it didn't look the same as any other grits I've seen before. I mean I tasted the cheese but I felt like it was missing something. I'm no grits whisperer but I gave it a chance ! I enjoyed it. The collard greens was too damn hot to eat at one point (plus the fried chicken) so I had to let it cook down a bit. I have been here twice and from the outside you wouldn't realize it takes up two-three store fronts so it can hold a lot of people if needed. They always play nice jams to Bob your head to while you enjoy soul food. The complimentary cornbread is a warm sweet starter and I love the make and cheese. They have a wide variety of options including chicken, but so many other options like salmon croquettes which I highly recommend. The sides are NOT to be missed. So while waiting in line for tickets for Tina at TKTS TKTS, one of the women working the line recommended Amy Ruth's. It is typical soul food. We arrived and were told it's a 20 minute wait only to have the man behind us told it was a 45 min wait. When we asked the man who I guess was the host ... he said "a little wait - a long wait but you're getting on my nerves". Well okay... after waiting a while we noticed the line did not move and decided to do to go. This did move quite quickly. So three of us order the Ludacras chicken wing meal (Mac and cheese, greens, cabbage, mash potatoes, and sweet potatoes.). I didn't taste the Mac or greens but the sweet potatoes were delicious. The cabbage was garbage!!! It only had shredded cabbage - not sure if it was steamed or fried with no flavor, seasoning, nada! The mash potatoes were basic. I was pleasantly surprised that the wings are whole wings. Oh heard my sister in law say the cornbread was good but I thought it wasn't very good. A friend joined us and she had the honey fried chicken that was quite crispy despite being in delicious honey. She had mac and then cheesy grits (which didn't look like there was much cheese but she seemed to enjoy her whole meal To be honest... I guess this is great for tourist who want to sample soul food. So to each their own lol. These are the ratings for the meals my table got: Jerk chicken with Mac n cheese and candied yams - 8/10 BBQ chicken Mac n cheese and candied yams - 8/10 Whiting with Mac n cheese and potato salad - 3/10 - fish didn't taste fresh to me. I don't have much chance to come to the area often but visited this popular kitchen last weekend. Ordered the chicken waffle myself and my friend got the chicken with two sides. I love the flavours and texture of the waffle - very fluffy, buttery in flavours but not overpowering. The chicken comparatively is a bit on the dry side and I hoped it would be more juicy. I stop by on Sunday to grab desserts. On my way out of town. I bought red velvet cake, a slice of cornbread and banana pudding. The red velvet cake is rich, it's not overpowering at all. I would recommend the red velvet cake. The cornbread is slightly sweet, but mainly savory. I would also recommend that. The banana pudding, I would not recommend at all, it was packed in a food container, so sloppily that it had to be saran wrapped to avoid spilling out on the sides. When I got home to eat the banana pudding the wafers were like literal mush there were no wafers in form. So I was persuaded to come to Any Ruth's vs. Sylvia's by a local resident of NYC, I'm so glad I listened. The service was outstanding thanks to Tasha, she was very knowledgeable about the menu, made good recommendations and even went above and beyond to make me a pepper sauce for my greens. We ordered 5 dishes to share. After reading everyone's reviews, the chicken and waffles seemed like a must try. And it's true! All of us claimed that the chicken was perfectly marinated and fried. Seems like all the fried food is super tasty. The fried catfish was also delicious. We tried a verity of sides as all the entrees comes with two sides. The fried okra and steamed okra seem to be the fave. The black eyed peas were tasty and we loved the cheesy grits and the grits with the shrimp. YUM! None of us really likes the collard greens and the cabbage. Probably not used to the way it's cooked. My only complaint would be that the bus boy kept coming by every minute asking us if we were done with our food. Even took some away before we could stop him.
