The food at Andersen is always good. But today I wanted to give them a shout out for the very good customer service I experienced. I order a strawberry cake for my staff and I needed it at 6:30AM. I was instructed to order online and the earliest pickup option was 9AM. I added a special instruction to pick up at 6:30AM. I called customer service day before to double check that they read my note and would accommodate my request. I have no trust in customer service these days! Nice addition to the neighborhood. I noticed that another Andersen location had a way better looking chicken caesar salad -- generous amounts of parmesan, freshly chopped parsley was sprinkled on top, and it wasn't soggy. They put the chicken on top when it's piping hot and close the lid, which steams it up a bit. You get bread of the day with your salad. I'm still hitting up this spot regularly. NO ONE speaks/understands plain, simple English in this operation. And even easy instructions given in fluent Spanish (which I speak; I'm a Cuban-American) are a #fail for them. What the hell is so difficult to understand about "I'd like a chicken salad on toasted sourdough, please -- no sprouts and light mayo only"? And when English is obviously a challenge (that becomes quickly apparent, depending on the clerk), and I order in Spanish instead ("Por favor, quisiera una ensalada de pollo con pan de sourdough tostado, sin soya y con un poquito de mayonesa solamente") How can things go wrong...right? But nope...in the Shitty-By-The-Bay, anything's possible, including complete illiteracy. So what did I get back today? Instead of my chicken salad, it was tuna salad on plain white (not toasted), with sprouts. Last time it was the chicken salad, not toasted, heavy mayo. And the time before that, chicken salad, barely toasted, heavy sprouts. And truth be told, I call the little blond Mexican gal in the back -- this Andersen's "chef" -- the chief culprit of translation #fail. And the clerks at the registers are also basically comprehension-challenged, if admittedly very nice kids. But for a $9.25 for a run-of-the-mill sandwich, "nice" isn't enough -- I want it done right. It *cannot* be THAT hard. Anyhow, today was Strike Three. Now they're OUT. I guess it's time to walk the extra few blocks to Ted's (or God forbid, that horror-movie Subway on Van Ness) if I want a quick takeout sandwich. read more

I went here for lunch with a friend. We went at 1pm on a Monday, so there was a bit of a wait, but they seemed to be able to keep the line moving really well. they have a bunch of delicious-looking pastries in the front, and I was very tempted to get one. The menu was a bit confusing, since the paper one was different than the one they had on the board, but it seemed that we could order from either one. I ordered the eggplant sandwich on whole wheat bread, which ended up being $8. The sandwich was delicious! The ingredients seemed really fresh, and the bread was really well toasted. I wish they had been a bit more clear about whether or not the inside of the sandwich would be hot, since I had assumed it would be, but then it was just room temperature. My friend ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich, which she said was really good as well! Overall, I really liked the food, but I felt like the interior wasn't that great. There are three tables, and one small bar where four people can sit. The tables were slightly dirty, and the people working there were too busy to clean. I had oh so many misgivings about this place before I even walked in. It looked too corporate. It looked too spartan. It was filled with corporate Spartans, or spartan corporates. They wouldn't have anything vegetarian. People were blocking the line rather than standing in it. People were blocking the door. But you know what? My sandwich was good, and it was made to order with what tasted like fresh ingredients. While the bread was good but not bakery good, the cheese was cheese-store good. The people who work here are very friendly, and they keep the line a-moving, which I'm sure is essential around lunch hour. Been waiting for this place to open for a couple of months now, finally! Being so close to where I work is a definite plus also. I ordered the bbq chicken sandwich. It was pretty tasty and flavorful.The sandwich consisted of chicken, bacon, bbq sauce, cabbage, and chipotle mustard all on a toasted ciabatta. One small gripe would be that the bacon could have been slightly crispier. Overall the place is great though. I've heard that their are some issues with the staff being new and somewhat slow, but I didn't have any problems. I only had to wait about 5 min. or less to get my order. The place was on the empty side though. This will probably turn into one of my regular spots for lunch. read more

I've pretty much tried everything on their lunch menu except the vegetarian sandwiches. My favorites include the chicken salad sandwich, fruit salad & the onion and cheese bagel with cream cheese. Two sandwiches that I"m not too fond of is the Chicken Pesto and the Grilled Ham & Cheese. The chicken breast is deli meat with a thick mayo slapped on. You'll barely taste the pesto mixed in. The grilled ham and cheese isn't really grilled, rather heated. My cheese wasn't even melted. Since Anderson's is conveniently located across the street from my office, it's still the healthiest option around. Love the bread choices. Be sure to come early because they run out of items by the early afternoon at times. read more

Sweet! Here's to another business to throw into my weekly mix of Martha's Bros Coffee, Cafico and Starbucks runs at work! I decided to stop by during my afternoon break after two of my coworkers went and grabbed lunch here. They both enjoyed what they had, so I took it as a good sign. And they brought back a take-out menu for our convenience too. I wanted something small and not so sweet, so I ordered a bowl of their Boston clam chowder. It was definitely delicious and tasty, and I'm thankful that I have a consistent place to go for clam chowder (Cafico only carries clam chowder on Fridays). They provided bread to go with the clam chowder as well, but I think my only complaint was how small the "bowl" was ($4.50 for a tiny bowl that really almost looked like a cup). My coworker ordered a bowl of their clam chowder during lunch, and he said that he was served much more than what I had. I had to take them down a notch for service because, even though I was the only person there ordering my soup at that time, it took over 5 minutes just to get my food. I think they forgot about me at one point... bummer. I think if they could, they should borrow an employee or two from their neighbor Starbucks because they have AMAZING employeeds who are great with customer service and are very efficient... then again, I don't know how they could work that out... Next time, I'll go back and try their sweet desserts. They did look great displayed - I just wasn't in the mood for anything really sweet. I work nearby and this place had a sign up for a long time. And the wait is finally over. Food is pretty good. Had the Spicy Turkey Pepperjack and Clam Chowder. Got my favorite, which is probably many people's favorite..creamy french bread! Downside?... the service is pretty horrible right now.. but I won't shut it down yet. Living right next door I'm so happy that Anderson Bakery moved in. They are super friendly here and the prices are very reasonable. Their baked goods are delicious(such a tease!). My bf and I especially like their spicy turkey sandwich and I really enjoy their fruit salad(which is lettuce, fresh fruit, pecans and a light vinaigrette) it also comes with two slices of bread(I recommend requesting it be the raisin bread-delicious!) Anderson, I've been dreading writing this review and have tried to avoid it for many months as there are things I really do like about you! The fact is, out of the last 6 times I have ordered food from you, my ordered has been messed up 4 of the times. Twice I have ordered bagel with cream cheese, tomato and ham and have gotten bagel with JUST cream cheese instead. One time I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and instead got turkey avocado. Today I ordered a BBQ chicken sandwich and you forgot the BBQ sauce! The other two times my order was correct, and free (both were in response to me calling to complain about orders that were incorrect). I called you today and will be getting yet another free sandwich out of this fiasco. While I do enjoy eating my sandwiches at 50% off, I don't enjoy the 30 min wasted walking there and waiting for my $7.50 sandwich, only to return to my desk and open it up and see that it is not what I ordered. Not how I like to spend my only 30 minutes of free time during the day. Please update your training methods because I can only imagine that many more sandwich mishaps are going unreported because most people do not enjoy spending the remaining 15 minutes of their lunch break calling you to complain and then posting on Yelp immediately after. I come here after each dentist visit just so I can stick some cheese and doughy sugars back into my teeth. I mean, it's right outside the building and when they have a fresh bake, it's impossible to walk away from. Having pastries or savory baked bread makes a great morning. The California BLT is my favorite, but roast beef is delicious too. Once you open the door you're almost immediately on top of the register. I'm also not a big fan of the chicken in the chicken noodle soup (kind of the meat equivalent of "cheese food.") Am going to try one of the hot sandwiches next time. Pastries are standard price $2.40+ depending on what you get. The line to order and pay can be a bit confusing since the counter area is small. Ice tea is not watered down. Prices recently went up from $1.60 to $1.80. Ironically their ice machine broke so they will have someone deliver ice to them. So far I've been striking out on Mondays. ICE ICE BABY! read more

No thanks, I will stick to my franchise-y Turkey/Avo/Swiss sandwich when I'm having a supremely awful and the only thing that will fix it is a walk to your bakery door, no line leading out of it and no wait to get exactly what I want. Service has always been cool and the sandwich size is pretty decent for what you get (you're paying at least the same if you go anywhere else). Lo and behold...there's a twist tie in my sandwich. A TWIST TIE!! Those twist ties that are used to tie the openings of the bread bags. What if I had swallowed that thing? Sandwiched between two other chain bakeries (Boudin & La Boulangerie), Andersen Bakery on Market street was my stop for a sandwich since Boudin's had a line and I didn't discover La Boulangerie until after my unfortunate lunch. The chicken salad sandwich was overloaded with mayonnaise which overpowered any other flavor in the salad. When I opened it up to look at it I found a measly spoonful slapped in the center of 2 large pieces of white bread, a handful of sprouts, and lettuce. There was way too much empty bread space to consider this a $7 sandwich. As for the pastries, there wasn't much to choose from. And what was presented was presented poorly, on empty trays scattered about. I wasn't sold on trying one because I had no idea how long they'd been sitting there. With the competition so close in one block, you've got to step it up Andersen's! I doubt I'll be back. Peaceful service alone is not going to save you. read more

Not worth a trip from anywhere else... but if you happen to be in the area it's a fine option. Fresh baked bread, available in both full and half loaves. The sourdough is quite good. The raisin loaf is decent. Several sandwiches to choose from, some good, some just ok. There gets to be a pretty decent line here at times, and the space to line up is tiny. So inevitably people are coming in from Fox Plaza and in from the street and all converging in front of the counter like a Tokyo train station. You may need to stab someone to keep your place in line. So bring a knife. On your way out, be sure to say hello to the homeless people gathered on the street. Some of them have interesting stories about lost loves, wildebeests, and alien anal probes. Three stars. read more
