This place has been around for a long time probably around 2 decades or more. My family members and I would occasionally buy the chocolate/raspberry cookies for dessert and they're so good that my dad and I would fight over them! This past weekend was my mom's birthday and we got the a 16" inch regular cheesecake. It costs $16. The cheesecake tastes delicious. The flavor wasn't heavy and it had a great texture. I have been to both the UES and Queens locations. The UES location is a sit-down restaurant whilst the Queens location is take-out only. They serve great strudels (both sweet and savory). I particularly enjoy the cabbage strudel. They also serve very good cookies and small Hungarian-style cakes, such as seven layer and chocolate mouse. I tried their croissants a few days ago and was not impressed; however, I'm going to return earlier in the morning, as I know they make their croissants fresh everyday. They have a wonderful, fresh assortment of croissants, danishes, cakes, ruglachs, etc My favorites to date are the poppyseed beigli (roll) and napoleon. I cheated on my Gluten Free diet for this place a few times. My Father was Hungarian and I grew up with him splurging on his Hungarian treasures a few times a year. The seven layer cake was delicate, cream, etc good but I was spoiled on a now closed shop that used to add a hint of lemon to cake and real ganache. Tried a few items. Small cookies were wonderful, strudel ok(personally never fan, so taste yourself), Danish was better of those two. But it was their cupcake with towering chocolate moose, and a chocolate shell that hit all my chocoholic bells. Never remembered any Hungarian pastry like this. Awesome. Get some and even though cupcake is wonderful, eat top. Wish they would serve some Gluten free options. There are walnut, hazelnut flours that I know can be used with GF flour to make wonderful options. If they do, please contact me. read more

Hi there Andre! I am truly appalled that you are in business from service to taste a big 0. I visited your establishment on Christmas eve to purchase two poppy seed and nut rolls. The lady with the reddish hair at the register was the worst person to ever be in the service industry. The man in front of me bought one babka and paid with a 100 bill. She shook her head and said with disgust you pay with a hundred and you only buy one babka, then the man after him asked you Andre for donuts and you said they would be out in a few. The lady shook her head again and nastily told him wait there, muttering under her breath. The same man asked about flavor and you told him don't talk to me about this talk to her. He asked the lady at the register and she made pretend she didn't hear him. Andre as an owner of a business you can never become to important to address a customer. Secondly rude people with no manners affect your business negatively. Now back to my story, when it was my turn I asked for my rolls the rude lady threw them in a bag, I went to ask her something and she said ask before not now. I said fine, I only wanted to know if they contained raisins but it was too late. Now if you have an amazing product that is out of this world I would say you know what.... that is life if you make the best you can afford to be a jerk because the customers will still come, but when your product is stale and hard on Christmas eve.... Shame on you. I was there at 10 AM on Christmas eve and you sold stale and dry product. I wanted to return it to you on Christmas day. Horrible product very dry and not fresh. Now horrible service plus unacceptable product = you will never see one cent from me and I will warn as many people as I can about my experience save your money and find something else. read more

I wanted to surprise my sister with an apple strudel that she had been craving. I visited Andre's for its proximity to my house. I was surprised and disappointed on a couple of counts: they only accept cash, and the strudel is sold either 'whole' or 'half'. The fact that it was pricey would not have been an issue had it been edible, but I was appalled at how poorly the strudel tasted. The filling was dry, the apples were not cooked enough, no crumbs, and the dough was dry and tasteless. My sister served five portions, and all five were left uneaten once they were tasted. I can't report on the rest of Andre's baked goods, but as far as Struedel goes, it's the worst. read more

Two words : "Prune Danish". I grew up with these as a kid during our trips to The Rascal House in Miami Beach. For years I've been trying to replicate that food memory. Some were too sweet, some not enough prune filling, and what was inside was always "close, but no cigar". Andre's prune danish transport me back to my childhood days. Their danish is perfection. Once in awhile when I drive out to LI I literally let the Queens Blvd exit off the LIE call my name, park in front of Andre's and take three or four with me. On my way to visit my BFF, I walked past 67th Ave and halt in front of Andre's. The mouth watering displays of fresh made coconut macaroons, strudels, pies, linzer tarts, ruglach, and even mini danishes can blind anyone with a sweet tooth! If you're not in the mood for pastries, a step inside the shop reveals more treats- chocolate mousse cake, Napoleon, butter cookies, and all sorts of Hungarian sweets. It's a very small bakery that is meant for take-out only. I had their macaroons, savory cheese puffs, and the chocolate mousse cake. I was also in the mood for Napoleon but no thanks to the guy that brought out the entire tray-all 7 pcs!! The macaroons are delicious! Crispy, sweet coconut shreds that appears to be light and fluffy yet it breaks open to reveal the dense and chewy texture. (all pastries are priced at $7.99/lb.). I'm not a big fan of the savory cheese puffs, it was too salty and buttery. Overall, it was like eating a flaky cheese croissant. And, the chocolate mousse was not rich and dense but light and foamy. I'm guessing the recipe was substituted with whipped cream, cheaper version cream, and weak chocolate which equals to a bad combo. I will def be back for the strudels and pies! read more

I used to live in Forest Hills and really enjoyed their strudel. In fact, my relatives in Forest Hills even sent me rugelach as a holiday present. This year I decided to have a Hanukkah meal, but since I live in Iowa, there are no Hungarian bakeries and I ordered from Andres. This turned out to be traumatic. I did not get a receipt for the purchase. Then I called to make sure the order was processed and was told to call back. After three calls I was told the order shipped, I asked for a tracking number but was told the person handling the shipments would not be in until later, please call back.But what was most disturbing was that the people were rude. I paid for two day FedEx and even called them to see if they could find the delivery. When this failed, I called the store again and was given the same go around. Finally, I called and was curtly told I would get all my money back and they hung up. I hope I am refunded but I really wanted to impress my family with their pastry. read more

This is one of the last bakeries in NY that knows how to make dark, flaky danish and the thinnest strudel. I am devastated that the First Ave location is closed and can only assume it is because people in Manhattan do not actually know what is good. I used to get a dozen of the prune and cheese danish along with some seven layer cake (so good!) to bring to my mother in Florida whenever I visited. Why is no one talking about the cheesecake! This is not the big round cheesecake often thought of as NY cheesecake. This is a dense,rich cheesecake that is only about 2 1/2" tall and baked in a sheet. With lots of cinnamon on top. A small piece goes a long way. I grew up eating this kind of cheesecake at another bakery in Queens, long closed now, and let me tell you it's hands down better than 3/4 of the cheesecake in the city. I make the pilgrimage to Queens just for it. I'm only sad that they are now selling it in precut, wrapped rectangles of about 1/2 lb each. I would much rather buy it in one piece but if this keeps it fresher, I'll deal. read more

I love this place, yes it's tiny to walk into, but so what as long as the products are great. I alway buy for Passover and/ or any other high holidays.. Yes the lady is rude what you expect, that's how they treat people in Israel and in Hungarian. Andre's Hungarian bakery, Queens Blvd, 67th Drive, the croissants' are the best in the city, easily comparable to anything in Paris. Then there is the decadent Cheese Puff, a perfectly baked, crusty phyllo dough pastry filled with white cheese. The ruglach and babka are the best, don't tell Jerry Seinfeld. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE GOING INTO THIS BAKERY! (If you can call it that? My bathroom is bigger than the bakery and I live in a small apartment.) Where should we start first? The horrible tasting pastries or the rude service received? I will start from the beginning... I work a stop away from the 67th avenue M/R subway stop. I decided to get off to walk around to familiarize myself with the Forest Hills area since at work I often get inquiries about where the post office is, good restaurants, etc. As soon as I get off I use google maps for food around me. I look at the map and notice behind me is Andre's Hungarian bakery (I'm really bad at reading maps!). So I said ok! Let's try this spot first! I enter and I see an old squat woman speaking to a customer laughing and being nice and handing them their baked goods. I'm the next one and am waiting patiently to be helped and once she says goodbye to the customer, she turns to me and the smile is gone. Instead it's replaced with a displeased look and a gruffy voice saying, what can I help you with? (I don't know what I did to have made her dislike me. It was my First time ever going into this bakery) I brushed off her attitude and smiled and said I would like to purchase a box of pastries to give to my coworkers. She goes how many people? I said ten. She gives me another look like she really doesn't want to help me, but has to cause she needs to make money and I think I heard her grumble and muttered something under her breath as she went to reach for a box. I already knew what I wanted. Which literally took less than 5min to put in the box. It would have been quicker if she wasn't such a crabby old woman who didn't want to help me and was moving slow, probably to make me wait or to make me leave. Now I don't know if it was my race or skin color that made her dislike me very much, but I did not do anything wrong. I said hello how are? I said my please and thank yous, but even when I was paying for her overly priced pastries, that did not taste good (had a very greasy taste on the frosting and the cakes were bland no flavor. My coworkers did not like the pastries, they said it was very greasy and some of the pastries were a bit dry and not moist. I am pretty sure, cakes are supposed to be semi moist, not dry. Which comes to conclusion, she did NOT serve me Fresh pastries, but 2 day old pastries!) she was like $42! Which I paid in cash and she snatched the money from my hand. At the end of the transaction I smiled and said thank you and she didn't say anything, she just looked at me muttered something that did not resemble your welcome. I'm pretty sure she cussed at me in her language or some language. I just smiled and said have a good day. Like I said I do not know what I did to make this crabby old woman dislike me. If I had to choose between going to this bakery or to Martha's I would choose Martha's on forest hills. This Andre Hungarian bakery has horrible tasting pastries, a low variety and VERY rude people. Was just here for the first time this week and only got to sample the blueberry pie tart so this is the only thing I can judge by. Inside small and for what appears to be to go orders only. Service--meh. Lady was ok, but she appeared very agitated by my simply walking in to make a sale. Blueberry tart with fresh blueberries on top--marvelous. The crust was nice and buttery with a little sweetness, blueberry filling delish, and fresh blueberries on top made it that much better. Excellent with a side of ice cream or even more seasonal berries. Would definitely go back to try other things. The tarts all looked wonderful and so did some other pastries. Prices--a little pricey. $16 for a small about 6 inch tart. However, it was decent so I cannot complain too much, but they definitely hold the market in the neighborhood for bakeries and because of essentially the monopoly on the block for bakeries, they can charge that high. I have been very disappointed with the recent staff and service at this bakery. Their products are not that fresh anymore either. The cookies - that I used to like - seem to have stale/ hardened filling - choc or rasberry - both of which I tried. Their croissants were disappointingly tasting like thick bread - instead of the fluffy light version you are used to. And their rates have gone up too! To be more than Manhattan. Btw, they only take cash - so bring lots of it. On top of ALL of this, the staff is inefficient and rude. I recently went to buy a b'day cake - and just after a few minutes, they acted like they were impatient and ready to be done with and move onto the next customer. (Isn't that the whole point of a small bakery? customer service!?) I love/hate this place because they sell the most delicious hamantaschen, but only during one week out of the entire year. I can smell the fresh pastries baking when I leave my apartment every morning and it's torture. The rugalech is so fresh and not too hard or too doughey, they have the perfect texture.
