Late review but better late than never... I went back in May with a friend who had heard about it on Instagram and she had been dying to try it out since then. What she didn't realize is that it's more of a tapas place instead of a dinner place but it's easy to make a meal out of several tapas. We tried several tacos and other small plates that I cannot recall now but I do remember thoroughly enjoying all of the plates we chose. We started with the guac and chips, which was tasty and fresh. I thought I would need to order another small plate - looks can be deceiving when you're hungry- but realized it was enough and proceeded to order dessert. I do remember ordering the tres leches, which was on point! Definitely a good spot for tapas- and even dinner. Decided to stop by again to check out their brunch menu which they were featuring on a Monday due to Labor Day weekend. The pre fix is such a great deal. You get an entree, coffee, and 3 drinks with choices of a Margarita , Bloody Maria, or Mimosa. The Chicken Chilaquiles were served in a skillet with perfectly cooked eggs and melted cheese and warm chips covered in their verde salsa. If you like it a little spicier ask for some of there hot sauce. Margaritas are well balanced and not too sweet. Exceptional and attentive service provided by the bartender Ian. Very creative Mexican-inspired food. I particularly loved the Chile en nogada. The twist is that is is filled with vegetables not meat as is the traditional way. The chocolate tart also great. Brussel sprout side only OK. The service was not good; they first brought me the wrong order and had to change selections because by then it would have taken too long to get the selecto I originally chose. This restaurant had a nice atmosphere and tasty food. The serving sizes were on the smaller side for the price but the flavors were really good. I had the cauliflower torta and my BF had the beef tacos, which we really enjoyed. We both had the spicy margaritas (his had spicy salt), which was very spicy. I wanted so badly to love this restaurant because I am a fan of the chef and am a lover of fun, funky Mexican dishes but it was just meh. On a positive note, the drinks were all delicious. Great margaritas and additionally some fun concoctions with mezcal. I had one with whisky and mezcal with hints of a mole flavor. Really delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. Decor is super cute. The spicy pineapple guac was yummy - traditional but then served with a scoop of a spicy pineapple mix on top. The cilantro crema 'salsa' was miss for me. It tasted like a bitter ranch and the cilantro flavor was too muted for my liking. I enjoyed the heftiness of the tortilla chips served with the dips. Tacos all tasted nice but not memorable. Highlight for me was the short rib taco but who doesn't love short rib tacos? read more

Late posting this review - went for cinco de mayo with friends! Not the cheapest location around but we were able to find seating and good mexican food which was the goal. The only thing was a little disappointing was that there were no drink specials - $13 for a margarita in a small glass that gets finished pretty quickly. We went at 5:30/6 which is prime for happy hour too. Overall great experience with the variety of tacos, no one left unhappy! read more

Great atmosphere, great bartenders, awesome food. Not your average Mexican food. There is a multitude of flavors packed into every dish. Reasonable pricing and the deal of a shot of tequila and beer for $10 is golden. Cons- Longer wait to get some of the dishes to the table and not as responsive of waiters. I believe one server was waiting some of the inside and some of the outside tables so it was tough to get their attention. read more

Anejo was an incredible find during a short weekend trip to the city. We got the short rib and pork tacos and they were cooked and spiced to perfection. There were sooo many tequilas to choose from, and our server guided us in crafting the perfect margarita. The queso was the highlight of the meal, however. Ambience was cozy/warm/trendy/rustic. This is one of my newest favorite Mexican restaurants in Hell's Kitchen. It has great appetizers, great tasting sauces and especially tacos. The food always seems to be just the right amount. Not too over powering and just enough to satisfy me. It has nice decor inside which looks like a vintage Mexican bar. Very comfortable, music not too loud. The people who served me were nice and even gave me a free dessert on my birthday. I would definitely recommend it and will return. read more

Awful service- 10 of us came in for dinner after speaking with a hostess 2x the night before and confirming the details. They asked us to do a pre-fixe dinner to which we agreed. Our reservation was for 7pm, and we got there a bit earlier to grab some happy hour drinks (which our hostess on the phone had let us know about), the sign outside says happy hour from 4-7pm, however, they seat us at our table and let us know that now the happy hour only goes til 6:30 and that both the sign outside and our hostess were wrong. Went here on a Wednesday night with a friend. This place is quite popular- restaurant was filled even on a wed. Service was good but the food was ok. We ordered the shishito peppers, queso fundito, guacamole, chicken tacos and short ribs tacos. We also had the sangria- which was ok...not enough fruits, tasted more like syrup. We wanted the rose sangria but they were out of it. I was so excited to try the queso fundito but it wasn't as great as I thought it was going to be. It was mediocre and it didn't look as good in person compared to their IG photo. The tacos were both pretty dry... REALLY REALLY BAD EXPERIENCE ! The brunch was terrible. The mimosas were refilled from a huge plastic bin, using Tupperware to pour it into carafes. My wife asked if she could have a fresh mimosa since hers was flat, and they said no, that it was made today, and just topped off her flat mimosa with some extra flat Prosecco. She didn't touch the drink for the rest of the meal and no one seemed to care. We left as soon as we could. We sat at the bar and the bartenders are really rude and don't really care at all. Back again and they had some new dishes that I had to try. The chef has really outdone himself with the lamb barbacoa tacos. DELICIOUS. Also, there is a rabbit mole enchilada that provides great balance of flavors. Definitely try it if you like rabbit. Went with friends and did the brunch special. The food and drinks were great and more than enough food, though did have to ask multiple times for refills on the unlimited drinks. Our one friends opted to just get a coffee and not do brunch. We ended up giving her some of the salad they brought out as we were all full. When the bill came we realized the food and drinks were charged separate and it came to $25 more than it should be, with no reasoning. After inquiring, our server informed us the manager had instructed him to add a fee since our friend had been eating too. We were enraged that they had not mentioned this during the meal, and tried to sneak it on the bill by raising the cost of food and drink. We asked to speak with the manager. Manager never came over, and the waiter came back explaining the reasoning, and that they would waive the added fees "this time". Very unprofessional and sneaky. read more

Went for brunch based on friend recommendation. Can select brunch combo which includes 3 drinks. Food is very good. Nice variety of Mexican themed brunch specials. Our group all ordered different items and loved them all.. Steak & eggs was particularly delish. Our only complaint: the Bloody Maria's. They are so spicy that they are nearly undrinkable. It's a mix so they cannot adjust them - we did ask. They should at least offer a plain Bloody Mary as an alternative. Otherwise a super brunch. read more

I've been coming to Añejo for years. Their Mexican food is some of the best in Hell's Kitchen in my opinion. The downside? The service. It took insanely long for the staff to take our orders (and it's not like some of them were busy bc we watched them standing around, chatting with each other). One of the staff members then tried to upcharge us for an item; we challenged her on that and then we found the charge on our bill anyway. Really disappointing experience at Añejo. Came here for brunch with my wife on a brilliant sunny Saturday afternoon. As we reside in Hell's Kitchen this is a spot we often frequent and we were looking forward to a tasty brunch of tacos and margaritas. When the bill came my wife handed to our waitress 2 "Free Brunch Margarita" tickets we had been given on a previous occasion. She gives us a sullen look and says "those can't be used for the Margaritas that were ordered". Me: "Huh?" Waitress: "yeah those tickets do not apply to your drinks. Sorry." Me: "can we speak to the Manager?" Manager comes over and to make a long story short "....there is NOTHING I can do". You'll have to pay the bill in full". The only complaint I have is that they're like vultures in that they try to take your plate away before you're fully finished. Solo night out in NYC. I decided to eat my dinner at Anejo based on a friend's recommendation and the fact it was only a few steps from my hotel. My cocktail, the Pimm's Copita, prepared with the excellent Pierde Almas Plus 9 Botanicals mezcal-gin was simply fantastic. One of the great cocktails I've tasted, a great balance between the smokiness of the mezcal, the sweetness from Pimm's and the sourness from the tamarind mexican soda. It was the highlight of the night. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal hasn't been as exciting. The food wasn't bad per se, but perhaps at this price level I was expecting to be more excited about it. but there was nothing memorable about the plates I've had. The totopos were great but the salsa was ordinary, it could have been more spiced. The ahi tuna ceviche lacked flavor, it could have been more forward with the citrus flavors. The braised queso fresco was good but felt a bit alone in its broth with nothing to eat it with. The short ribs tacos were the tastiest of my meal, but definitely not worth the price asked for them. Finally, the molote was flavourful, but perhaps only because of the topping as the molote itself seemed like all dough and little filling. The service itself was uneven as well. The nice young lady who took my order was very sweet and attentive. I was brought the first two plates way too fast, barely minutes after my arrival. Then it took a very long time to get my third and fourth plate (the time between the third and fourth was about 30 minutes). The busboy who cleared out the tables was too expeditive as well... I had barely finished with the plates that he promptly removed them from my table. I had not finished with the totopos. The atmosphere was great. Beautiful restaurant, great lighting, beautiful bar. No complaints here. Finally, the $$ rating on Yelp is a bit misleading. Because of the portions size and the amount of plates required, this would be more a $$$ restaurant. So overall, it was an uneven experience. If it had been a cheaper restaurant, I wouldn't have been as severe, but at this price range (over $100 for one person), I was expecting more. Working on Tenth Ave and being a lover of tequila, I couldn't have been happier to hear that a tequileria was opening just a few blocks away. And, yeah, I'm a sucker for Top Chef, so I was unapologetically excited to see Angelo Sosa in the kitchen when we arrived for dinner tonight. We arrived around 6:15 and were seated immediately without a reservation -- we hit it just right because the place was packed about 20 minutes later. I generally drink tequila on the rocks (nothin' fancy for me), but I was intrigued by the Mole Noche (cocoa tequila, corn whiskey, chile and chocolate bitters). To my delight, the drink was not at all sweet -- spicy with that tequila bite. Loved it. Our party of three shared seven selections (and it was the perfect amount of food): Guac trio -- fabulous. I preferred the Anejo, but the pineapple-chipotle-cilantro was a close second. The chips were crispy and delicious, and the staff was only happy to replenish when we needed more. Corn dumplings -- love! I basically love anything with corn, so that was an easy sell. Rice and beans -- solid. Cornbread -- far above average. Don't miss it. Tacos -- we tried three. The beef tacos were, by far, the best. Chicken tacos were good. Sadly, the fish tacos (normally my fave) were too fishy, and I didn't finish mine. We couldn't leave without dessert. Loved the churros, thought the tres leches was just okay -- the passion fruit cream over-powered the delicious simpleness of the cake. The service was strong -- so nice to have attentive, knowledgeable wait staff. The manager made sure to stop by, as did Angelo himself. We'll be back! read more

Decided to come here for brunch after having a great experience at the bar the night before. The hostess was very pleasant and accommodating. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. We had to flag down a waiter to take our order. It consistently took close to 20 minutes to receive our drink orders (mimosas and sangria). I ordered my last drink while waiting for our food to arrive. The drink never came. The food arrived lukewarm. My friend ordered vegetarian home fries but received the ones with chorizo. When we alerted the server, he offered to bring a side of the vegetarian home fries. They also never came. Other tables were having similar problems. Maybe someone missed their shift or there was a mix-up in tickets. Fine. My problem is that no member of the staff bothered to acknowledge the problems, or to even stop by to see how we were doing. After sitting awkwardly for some time with our half-eaten meals, we finally had to flag down the waiter to get our check. read more

Walked in for dinner last night and the place was packed. We were graciously welcomed by the host, Nelson who was every bit of charming and accommodating. The food was incredible! Considering all the wonderful and creative restaurants in NYC, this place is quality and worth multiple visits. Had an amazing radish salad which I never would have thought to order if it weren't for the recommendation of the cute bartender, Dana (?). loved it!! Loved my braised pork tamale. The ambiance, drinks and delicious food make this place a hidden gem! Not to mention, Charlie the manager and Nelson the host were awesome and made us feel so welcome! read more
