I've been here twice now. I really enjoyed the food both times, but the portions are small compared to the prices. The drinks, again, are delicious...but small compared to the prices. I sat outside both times, which was a blessing because the music is pumping so loudly that we would have had to scream if we were inside. This is a great place for cheap happy hour tapas and drinks. I feel like this place gets ignored because it's close to a touristy area of the city. There are about 8-9 items on tapas menu which are $6 each and the Jalapeño Margaritas we had were $8. We tried everything on the happy hour tapas menu and they were all very delicious. My girlfriend & I have been eagerly awaiting the grand opening of this new addition to Hell's Kitchen. We came on opening night after seeing a Broadway show for a late dinner (10pm). Although I understand that Añejo's is more of a 'Tequileria' than a full service restaurant, the food we ordered wasn't up to par for our standards. The guacamole trio was indeed tasty, but the portion small, and price far too high. My order of a mushroom tamale was decent, but nothing extraordinary, given that I can get one for 1/4th the price across the street. My girlfriend's order of a pork taco was Extremely Small for the price of $11. I will let her explain that in her own Yelp review. The decor of the place is nice, both inside and out. However, the noise level is far too excessive. I couldn't hear the waiter too well, and asked repeatedly for him to kindly speak louder. My girlfriend and I had problems hearing each other over the overly loud sound system. I hope that the designer of the restaurant soundproofed the ceiling for the neighbors who live upstairs, or I foresee a problem. Although it was opening night, and of course misteaks are bound to happen, they ran out of beef @ 10:15, and didn't have any Dos Equis. Our waiter said they didn't serve that beer, until I pointed it out to him on the menu. As a resident of Hell's Kitchen for the past 12 years, and active member of the community, I support new business and development, especially on 10th Avenue. I wish Angelo all the best with his new restaurant, but my first time will be my last. His place is definitely for the hipster crowd, who may enjoy it more than my girlfriend and I. read more

Absolutely amazing! If you are visiting or live in New York this is a must go to place!! I was in New York for the weekend of February 1st. My friends and I stopped in for margaritas and guacamole. Which Anejo has the best margaritas and guacamole I have ever had and I like to believe I know my food and drink We were visiting Anejo on Saturday, February 2nd. When we arrived I check in thru twitter and the manager noticed and talked to use. The manager and bartender learned that I was a huge fan of Angelo Sosa from Top Chef and that I looked up to him for all his talent and dedication. The manager then invited us to attend their one-year anniversary party that evening, which Angelo would be there! Their anniversary party was over the top, I can not out into words the fun I had. Decent spot in Midtown open late with helpful staff especially when discussing the dishes and alcohol choices. Our waiter asked me what I usually liked to drink, which I replied scotch whiskey to which he suggested really trying the Mezcal. I was quite pleased with the flight and the three choices that came. I may have found my new go to drink. They also had a Mexican Turkey dish with molé sauce and stuffing for Thanksgiving season. Made with a different variety of turkey that is smaller and less dry than the American type. It was pretty good and tasted more chicken-like than turkey. The pineapple guac was also pretty good but you should like dishes with a slight sweet side if you order it. Nice spice kick, too. The side of corn and fish tacos were also quite good. I would say that prices are a bit high for the portion size. Not unreasonable but there really should be more than just two tacos with no sides for $14 or a larger bowl of guac for $12. The place is still worth a try, though, especially if you like Mexican food with some spice to it. read more

Come here with a group of my friends for my birthday dinner. On a Thursday night at 9pm this place was completely packed, thank god we had a reservation. We didn't have to wait, our table of waiting for us even though two of my friends were on their way. Everything on the menu is delicious! I picked this place because they had churros, but everything we eat was well worth it! The food tasted fresh and well executed. The chef put some thought into the flavoring of his food. Definitely get the guacamole trio, all of the tacos were tasteful, I can't remember anyone standing out cause they drinks were pretty good too and I was getting a bit buzzed. All of the drinks were well balanced you could taste the great flavors of the fresh ingredients and the liquor did not over power. The service was good, he seemed knowledgeable about the menu, the ingredients in the dishes and drinks. And of course my churros came out with a candle. :) Happy birthday to me! read more

The table also split the blistered shishitos (with crema and sofrito) and corn dumplings, which were also tasty. Stopped in here for a couple of post Broadway show drinks. We sat at the bar and that allowed us to watch them make a lot of really fun drinks. The service was mildly attentive. My drinks were great but I seemed to have considerably more booze in mine than my friends. Her second in particular just tasted like Lime Koolaid. It was hot out and with the doors and windows etc open, you had a feeling of being in a Mexican bar on a hot night. It was pretty dark inside (maybe a bit too dark?) but that probably kept things cooler. It was also a little loud for our tastes so don't go there if you want to talk to anyone, even if they are a foot away from you We didn't eat but the food smelled good enough (and looked good) we seriously considered it. Went to dinner here with my cousin and her boyfriend. She's half Latina and he is just addicted to Mexican food, and they were both really excited to try it. The ambiance of the place is comfortable. It was a nice night, so we sat outside, and people watching in NYC is always fun. The waiter we had was friendly, and did well considering we were there on a Saturday dinner rush. But he was an old pro, you could tell. Whenever we did ask for a recommendation or gave him 2 options as to which he would prefer, it was the most expensive item of the options that was recommended. Also, when we did pay after dinner, and wanted to pay $20 cash and split the balance on two cards, he came back apologizing that he "forgot about the cash and split the bill, so if you want to leave the cash for tip that would be fine". The food wasn't bad, but I feel it was a menu that any home cook with a little ambition could achieve. They do warn you that it is tapas style, and many small plates, but for being tapas style was, in my opinion, a very limited menu. We ordered a guacamole to start, again, nothing to brag about, make it at home. My cousin got a apple and mushroom salad, which she enjoyed, and was plated nicely, but was indeed a small portion. Her boyfriend and I each got a plate of tacos to share, him the chicken and I the spare ribs. The plates come with 2 tacos that you can take in 3 bites or less. They were tasty, but again nothing you couldn't achieve at home. I thought it was a little pricey for the amount of food. But again, I am still adjusting to living in NYC so it might be average. I do know that this same cousin and I have been to other Spanish style tapas bars before with much more eclectic menus, and much bigger portions for relatively the same price. I small guacamole, a salad, 4 two bite tacos and 1 drink each =$80. Glad we went to try it, but now that it's marked off the list, there are other places to go. read more

Huge chunks of octupus meat served with potato in a lightly spicy cream sauce. Outdoor seating on a beautiful NYC evening. The Not so Good: Tacos ranged from meh to mehhhhh. Ordered both the guac trio and salsa trio for 4 people but received in total about 8 tortillas, had to ask for more twice to get some.[ The cost is pretty outrageous for the quality but it's Hell's Kitchen so can't be too mad. The Bad: Crispy Carnitas plate. Where's the sauce! A slab of carnitas with overcooked skin on top, a dollop of bland beans does not a dish make. More egregious I ordered the "pork" tacos, which come with pineapple. But the pork they chose was carnitas, same as the Crispy Carnitas, and not Al Pastor which was inferred because of the pineapple. For everyone saying this is authentic Mexican I would suggest finding a Mexican eatery without fusion items or over-priced, misinformed dishes. I should've known when the tacos were called: fish, chicken, pork, or steak and not pesca, pollo, carnitas/pastor, carne asada. read more

Visited here last August by myself- it was my first time here and the restaurant was pretty new at that time I ate at the bar (it was a lively crowd) and I started with the allagash white and the sweet chili cashews - the cashews were very tasty For dinner, i had the fish tacos and an el diablos ahumando - the fish tacos were excellent and the el diablo was spicy! The food is served tapas style, so you definitely have to exhibit some patience given the passing of plates, dishes being served incrementally as they are prepared by the kitchen, small servings, etc. However, everything was delicious. In particular, I was a big fan of the tamales which were exceptionally good in my opinion. Tons of tequila to choose from. Also, it seems like they run occasional specials and discount some of the fancier tequilas. I may or may not have taken advantage of this. Service was outstanding. Our server (cute girl by the way), was very helpful and patient with our fairly large party. She made us feel welcome in the restaurant, offered some great suggestions, and kept things moving fairly efficiently, couldn't ask for more. The gentleman managing at the time was also pretty great. Since we were a rather large party and spent a fair amount of time/money there for dinner, he bought us all a round of drinks before we were heading off. Totally unnecessary, but much appreciated. This place is a blast. We've eaten here several times and the food is very good. The cocktails are better. To be honest, the first few times I ate here, my impression was that the service was good but not great. This impression changed at our last time there- it was amazing! We came here as part of my 30th bday activities and we were a large group (~14 ppl). We had a reservation for 10, but they were totally accommodating and pushed tables together for us. We spent around 3 hours there and we weren't rushed at all. The guac and chips kept coming out without delay and the cocktails were quickly replenished. Food as always was very well prepared. Stopped in around 9:30 on a nice Saturday night and asked to be seated outside but was told they were no longer seating outside. The hostess was nice though and seated us next to the open wall so it was pretty much the same thing. Drinks were excellent but a bit weak. Made a rez here for a Friday evening with my hubby and 3 friends. We are about 10mins late for the rez but they held the table. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant towards the windows at a high table which was great. Our waiter was friendly, professional, & on top of keeping our drinks & food flowing. As a big Top Chef fan, I was looking forward to trying out Anejo's during my recent trip to NYC. I came in with high expectations as it was recommended to me by a friend and I did not leave disappointed. We made reservations for 7:00pm. We arrived at 7:01 and were promptly seated. The music seemed a little loud, but it may have just been where we were seated. Now for the food and drinks: my husband and I both tried the classic margarita. I agree with another review, which said they were sweet, but they were certainly delicious (and strong!). We had Anejo guacamole to start which did not disappoint either. That was followed by chicken and short rib tacos. The portions were small, yet satisfying. We shared a bowl of rice and beans, which had a surprising smokey flavor that we thoroughly enjoyed. We also shared the chili roasted cashews, which I dream about at night! We finished with the churros, which came with great accompanying dipping sauces. If I didn't live so far away, I would definitely be back soon and recommend it to other margarita-loving-mexican-food-having friends. read more

The specialty cocktails all fit the theme correctly, and are served nicely. My date and I preferred the Mexicali Blues over the Ponche Vida. I was satisfied with the Mole Noche. The food is made to network. Dishes are portioned well for the small plate given. The fish tacos were superb. The guacamole for the corn tortilla chips might have had too much lemon. The host greets everyone quickly, and the servers are very attentive. No one seems to be hiding, and someone will be prepared for you when your drink is finished. I'd go again. Wah wah... of all the restaurants owned by Top Chef contestants I've been to, this one is the by far the most disappointing. Angelo was actually there dining with friends the night we went, and I'm surprised his presence didn't elevate the service. Poor, inattentive service and crazy loud!!! Their Paloma was weak. Portions were really small and over priced. The food was fine, that's about the most complimentary thing I can say. Just not a lot of enjoyment or value... We were in Manhattan for a long weekend. A friend highly recommended Anejo and we were not disappointed. We tried the standard guacamole, which was fabulous, with a perfect avocado and lime ratio. The texture was perfect, and the big, house made salty chips were a perfect match (Pause in review - for goodness sake you need to taste this guacamole!). The arbol salsa was also tasty. Likewise, the tacos were excellent and fun. We tried the shrimp tacos and their specialty short rib tacos. \What I particularly liked is that in both cases the protein was the star, with the other ingredients enhancing the flavor of the shrimp and beef rather than dominating. The next day we had a few hours to kill before a Broadway show and went back for happy hour margaritas (delicious) and more guacamole. Hells Kitchen is a short walk from the theater district and Anejo is a perfect stop. The staff was friendly and helpful both visits, and the general manager checked in on us as well, remembering our previous vist. I think some of the negative reviews are because of a misunderstanding over portions. Anejo is effectively Mexican tapas/small plates. If somebody wants endless chips and salsa there are numerous chains out there. I gave it four stars and not five because I have only been twice and have not dug deep into the menu. That said Anejo was a five star experience. Next time I am in New York I will be back. read more

This is my favorite little restaurant/bar in Hell's Kitchen and possibly one of my favorites in the city. Anejo is cozy, sexy, and inviting, and the staff really makes you feel at home. What to try? Drinks- Milagro Margaritas on tap. (request salt for the real deal.) Before you know it, you'll have had about 8 of them and be drinking Fortaleza Anejo neat with the owner! Food- Braised Queso Fresco. To. Die. For. Make a cheese taco with the corn tortillas and you will be craving this everyday. On a side note, the bar has a serious agave selection. Cocktails are made with fresh and homemade ingredients, consistently measured, and the staff really knows what they are selling. Great place to enjoy over and over again! read more

The night started off with a haughty lecture on how they don't serve frozen margharitas because they're not "authentic Mexican". Really?
