There was a multitude of things wrong. 1st, we set a reservation for 5 on the dot, they didn't open the restaurant up til 5:10 (we had to walk to the door to get them to open). 2nd, the two workers (chef and the waitress barely spoke English. Was very difficult to even order. 3rd, there was 0 music being played and the restaurant was literally just me and my girlfriend. It was the most awkward silent atmosphere I've ever been in. It took a very long time between dishes to be attended on, especially since we were the only ones in the restaurant - until the end of our meal where there was one other table. However, it's on par with the service in Italy so maybe that's what they were going for - very authentic service in that case Our bill for 3 came to $113 pre-tip. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their farfalle with smoked salmon rose sauce. I enjoyed my gnocchi - it was well balanced with the burrata and mozzarella tomato sauce, and gnocchi was a great texture. I also tried the chicken parm which was solid - but nothing that hit that "extra" mark for me. Angelina's seemed very authentic and quaint. It's a small restaurant that I think tries to pay homage to Italy in a "noncommercial/American" manner. Once you enter, the kitchen is right on the left and you can see the chef cooking the dishes. I went with a couple of friends who got the calamari, gnocchi and chicken parm. The calamari was well seasoned and the gnocchi used fresh heirloom tomatoes. For my entree, I had the Salmone Farfalle which was incredible! I typically have shrimp with my pasta and salmon for a change was definitely worth it. It was so good, I wish they gave more! I was done my meal after five bites. Reasons I'm taking off two stars... The restaurant has no sign or lettering indicating it's called Angelina's. We guessed it was Angelina's due to two black and white pictures of two women eating pasta posted through the window wall. The owner came back from smoking outside and he walked right past our table into the back. I didn't appreciate the whiff of cigarettes as I was conversing with friends and enjoying a meal. I got the Insalata Formaggi as an appetizer which contained arugula, pear, walnuts and various italian cheeses. It was drenched in dressing! My entire mouth and lips felt brushed with oil. Can I give more then 5 stars?!?? From the amazing people and atmosphere to the unbelievable food it's an experience that is a must. This quaint restaurant brings me back to my GREAT GREAT Dora Ricci's kitchen, back in the 80s when she would be cooking up chicken cutlets when I was in diapers. Her amazing recipes were since passed on to my grand-mom and my mom which I have be so blessed to partake in over the last 30 years. I have to be honest it was a let down . We had been here a year ago and had a fantastic meal but this time we found it just pretty standard. We had the bolognese and the shrimp pasta and to be honest it was nothing special. Service was quite slow and a bit distracted which was confusing since we were the only people in the restaurant. The cash only policy was also a bit confusing as there were no signs or notice on the menus or doors. I'm fine with cash only but I'd like to have some notice of it . My friends and I came here for an early dinner during the workday. It was alittle difficult finding the place since there was not a clear sign. This really was hole in the wall restaurant! I was excited to try it. For appetizers we got a bunch of different things to try and share. My friend got a salad, I got the fried calamari and shrimp and my other friend for gnocchi. The fried calamari and shrimp was very good! Very fresh and I like the seasoned breading. The gnocchi was very good as well. For entrees my friend got the chicken Parm (menu was organized the Italian way with apps., Pastas then meats/seafood) which was huge! Easily great for a few meals. Me and my other friend for the salmon farfalle pasta. Pasta was good and had bits of salmon in it. I wish there was a little bit more salmon in the pasta. Angelina's only came on our radar when we heard that our church was doing a fundraiser there - we heard Italian and BYOB, and we were sold! We made reservations for a weeknight (to support the church) without issue. Angelina's is conveniently located in Bella Vista, and it is a small spot in what feels like an old row home. The restaurant has good vibes, but since it is so small, I could see how it would feel crammed on a busy night (we were seated close to the kitchen, and we could hear some of the bustle from there). Our server was super kind, giving us helpful recs on dishes and being very friendly (appropriately so). We started off with the beef carpaccio, which was quite nice - the beef was thin to avoid loading you up before dinner, and the asparagus and cheese were nice accompaniments. For our meals, I went with the gnocchi and my husband for the carbonara. My gnocchi was delicious - I could tell they were homemade, and the sauce was decently light with whole tomatoes in it to be a nice vehicle for the gnocchi themselves. The serving was pretty generous too! My husband's carbonara was way lighter than others we've had, but this did not compromise the taste. He enjoyed it! We were pleased to enjoy a complimentary homemade biscotti at the end of our meal, which really sealed the deal. The price points were decent too, and being BYOB was a great touch. Angelina's is a good Italian spot in the city - the food was pretty solid, but with the high number of Italian restaurants in Philly, it's tough to put it at the top. This place is the real deal. Owner-chefs straight from Naples, white tablecloths, Mediterranean tiled walls, low-lit, vibrant art, bread with seasoned oil for the table, sturdy wine glasses....Angelina's might very well have been plucked straight from the Southern Italian coast and plopped in South Philly, and might very well be our new regular BYOB spot. I would be remiss if I didn't first mention that this dinner was personally special in more ways than one, and that the staff here made us feel so extra welcome. On a Saturday night, I was afraid there wouldn't be spots left, but I called at 4:30 (they actually don't open until 5) and was able to get a table for two at 6:30 that very night. Definitely call ahead, though, as the place is very small! We toted a bottle each of red and white to pair with our meal. The menu is short and sweet, but still seasonally inspired, plus there's daily specials to boot. I opted for one of those specials as my appetizer (the mussels in a tomato broth, made to order how you like, so I of course sheepishly had to request no spiciness), then gnocchi with burrata, tomato & basil for my entree, and ricotta cheesecake as my dessert. Boyfriend got the burrata appetizer, Angelina's Veal Milanese, and chocolate hazelnut cake. Everything from start to finish was fantastic. The mussels were plump and uber fresh, like we were dining on the Mediterranean, and the broth was so good it took everything in my power to not slurp it clean like soup. My gnocchi were pillowy, heavenly, in a not too heavy blush sauce, stick to your ribs, and in the perfect portion: everything an entree should be. That Veal Milanese, though, was the thing of dreams. The owner even told us "you're gonna love that, it's our best seller." And I can see why. A massive cut of beautifully breaded veal, pounded into thin, crispy, unctuous bites, topped with arugula and a sizeable wedge of lemon for squeezing. We boxed 1/4 of it for lunch the next day. I'm already planning to knock out more items from the menu, and excited to see what seasonal summer foods are on the horizon! Price is on par for the quality of food and service you receive here, plus that adorable ambiance where staff and patrons alike converse in Italian (kicking myself for quitting my Duolingo lessons.) (Pro tip for wheelchair users: I would consider the flat doorway/entrance to be wheelchair accessible, but that may not be the case for wider chairs. If you're concerned, just call ahead and book an earlier reservation when there won't be crowds (the woman was very nice on the phone!) This place is AMAZING. Look, I normally don't love Italian food. I feel like everyone does the same thing and it's usually meh. We booked this place for dinner with the family and a toddler. We started off with the Caesar Salad and I think the meatballs? Not sure since I didn't eat them - I stuck with the Caesar Salad, which was delicious. Not too heavily dressed, and flavorful. My husband and his parents loved the meatballs. They couldn't stop eating them and described them as if they were eating a "cloud". Even my toddler ate the meatballs and she has been a pretty picky eater lately. For dinner, everyone agreed the pasta's were amazing. My mother-in-law got the shrimp pasta and loved it. The rest of us got the burrata pasta - I had asked if I could switch the gnocchi to spaghetti since I don't care for gnocchi, and it was not a problem at all. I get the pasta expecting the typical mediocre pasta I get. No - this was amazing. You could taste the basil, the spices, the tomato and it was all brought together with the creaminess of the burrata and the perfect al dente pasta. It literally is probably the best pasta I've ever had. The service was exceptional as well - they cleared the plates after each course, and made sure everyone's water was filled. The vealchop was just breaded and fried with a handful of arugula plopped on top. Awful. Tuna Carpaccio was way overpriced for the amount you get, salmon was below average. Oh, and the desserts are frozen not homemade. Also they charge 10 bucks for a sliver of cake and don't tell you the price or give you a dessert menu. Also they don't tell you it's cash only until you get the check. Over 150 dollars for awful food. Don't waste your money, go to cucina-maria, 100× better than this place and everything in homemade, including the tiramisu. We went to Angelina's last night with friends. It's a restaurant we have been to many times in the past and always enjoyed it. It has been taken over by Michelle, the daughter of the chef, and her partner Richie. Michelle hasn't lost a beat from her mama's great old style Italian cooking and she and Richie make a great pair. Look we aren't big on rave reviews for many places we've been. This is mostly due to the fact that we cook at home and do what we know is great food. Somehow Angelina's has captured the essence of high quality low volume food that is unsurpassed by high ticket big fanfare places which always disappoint. We ordered lasagna, amatriciana, bolognese, and the special shrimp arugula, pasta- carpaccio classic, octopus etc. All of it was authentic and on the money. Props to Angela and the kitchen. If you want Italian classic dishes prepared so wonderfully well that you may never eat them anywhere else again, eat here! The menu is a compact offering of apps, pastas and entrees, all dishes you have seen 1000's of times. The differences are apparent as the food is served-obviously only the finest ingredients are used and the balance of flavors is just perfect. The kitchen is open so you can watch the mother/daughter team prepare plates. How could spaghetti and meatballs taste so ridiculously amazing? You have to come here to find out!
