Delicious appetizers and entrees! There's a cute patio area outside to sit and service was so fast! Street parking only though. The hush puppies were perfectly crispy outside but soft in the middle with a delicious honey butter on the side. They come out pipping hot though so be careful. The Mac n cheese?! Absolutely amazing with a crispy top and an ooey gooey center. I kept going back for more! I have been wanting to try this place for forever. We called on a Saturday night and were able to get a last minute reservation. When we arrived it was pretty busy but we were seated right away. I started out trying the hurricane cocktail it was pretty good although I would have liked it to be stronger. We ordered the hush puppies with the honey butter as an appetizer. They were so delicious. I could have eaten two plates of them. I had the shrimp creole for dinner it was very good. It came with white rice and green beans. My husband ordered the jambalaya he was very happy with it I tried it also and it was very good. We also had the macaroni and cheese with bacon which was good also. The food here is delicious! This was my second visit and it did not disappoint. I got the fried chicken meal. The chicken piece are cutlets, with a tasty, crispy batter. The plate came with a sweet potato mash and green beans. I kept eating, even after I was full, because it's that good! My friend had the catfish Po'Boy sandwich and never put it down. We didn't even want to share bites, so I'll just say she loved her meal too. We couldn't resist getting desert so we shared some beignets, covered in powdered sugar and cooked to perfection. The servers are pleasant and attentive and the atmosphere is very comfortable. (They are not trying to squeeze as many people in as possible. Thank you!) Lastly, I hope they don't read this next part...the prices are SO unbelievably reasonable with the quality and generous portions. If you haven't been, march yourself over there right now! Despite being critically-acclaimed by local food reviewers, it has yet to receive mention in any of the hoity guides like Zagat or Michelin, but I feel like it's just as good as Los Gatos' multiple Bib Gourmand award-winning The Bywater. But they aren't backed by multiple Michelin-starred Chef David Kinch, so read between the lines... The Good: *Certified Green Business *Reservation via OpenTable *Terrific service *Love the feel of the old building and the New Orleans based décor that's classy and not gawdy, as some La restaurants can be. *Bloody Mary was delicious, and the pickled okra was a nice touch. *Breakfast Jambalaya was "holy lord" good! It was like a cracked-out Eggs Benedict, as it had a rich hollandaise sauce, two perfectly pages eggs, and maybe the best Jambalaya we've ever had. If you're here for brunch--get this! *Fried chicken and beignets is a great play on the traditional chicken and waffles, but w/ a Cajun twist. I was a little disappointed that the chicken were tenders and not bone-in chicken, but one bite of them with the $2 add-on Tasso Ham and I was whisked away to fat ass heaven. The beignets were pretty good, too, but maybe not as fluffy as I'd like. The Meh: *The Hush Puppies that everyone raved about were just OK and a bit too stodgy in the middle for our liking. Coming off of Fat Tuesday, the vibes were right on at Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen on Shattuck Ave. in Berk! We've celebrated and dined in for many events and milestones over the years here, and it was so refreshing to be back and still feel all the same feels. With jazz music playing, colored beads, masks, and King Cake sliced on the counter, Angeline's was electric! We started with the hush puppies - crispy, fluffy, moist..def. try the side of melted honey butter with them! Next was the Fried Chicken Po' Boy (lettuce, tomato, pickle, Creole mustard, mayo, hot sauce) and their Voodoo Shrimp. Highly recommend both! The fried chicken is lightly breaded but still super juicy. The Voodoo Shrimp were cooked to perfection in their signature bbq sauce over rice with green beans. And to finish, we had to share the Baked Mac n' Cheese! So creamy, warm & comforting! For dessert we split the Angeline's Bananas Foster Bread Pudding with a rum caramel sauce - honestly, could have this for breakfast too! So satisfying and the best end to a beautiful meal. Our waiter mentioned they have brunch on the weekends from 10a-2p, and I've already spotted the dish I'm coming back to try - the Bananas Foster French Toast (still has the rum caramel sauce!) We're New Orleanians and we eat here every chance we can. It's worth the 30 minute drive, and dealing with parking in Bezerkly, to get our Cajun Catfish, Chicken, Etouffe, Jambalaya, Gumbo fix. Good food, excellent customer service, in an authentic ambiance is how I describe Angeline's. We sat down, and the waiter came right over to take our order. He didn't introduce himself, but he was polite nonetheless. We started with Hush Puppies, which were delicious. They were accompanied by honey butter, we had to ask for two to cover the order. Crispy on the outside and sweet and soft on the inside. We also tried the gumbo, appetizer size. Unfortunately it wasn't good. The rue and pieces of sausage tasted burned or overcooked, so we had to send it back. The manager came over and took care of it right away. I really appreciated that. For main entrées we had the ribs with sweet potato mash, and the buttermilk fried chicken with green beans and sweet potato mash. The ribs were decent, could've been more tender. It also relied heavily on the sauce for flavor. The sweet potato mash was delicious. A touch of ginger and vanilla made it superb. The fried chicken was also delicious. Fried crispy and juicy, the gravy that accompanied the dish didn't have any flavor. The green beans could also use some seasoning. Again, the sweet potato mash was the star. We finished off the dinner with an order of beignets, which arrived fresh and hot with the perfect amount of powdered sugar. It was the perfect ending to dinner. I was originally gonna give this a three star review given that our arrival was met with disgust and "what do you want" from the lady who took our name down, and didn't notify us when our table was ready. Our 20 minute wait ended up becoming an hour wait, because we never got notified that our table was ready... so knowing me, I was already ticked off as is. However, thanks to the assistant manager and the servers who constantly checked up on us, it saved the day and I had a pleasant experience here at Angeline's. Angeline's is definitely the taste of NOLA away from the actual lead by region -- the decor inside represented how authentic the restaurant actually is. If "swamp water" doesn't hit you in the face -- you gotta try it out, it's the Louisiana version of the modern Arnold Palmer, except not even watered down. My partner and I got the fried cheese grits for starters, which you already know was calling for southern paradise. The crust of the cheese grits were very flaky, and the crawfish etoufeé had just the right spice level and kick to it -- rich in flavor. I had wished they had a little bit more portion, but what can go wrong with the exquisiteness of such a wonderful dish? The jambalaya and catfish were nothing short of amazing -- all yummy food and special. I was honestly in love with their honey butter, especially when you put it on top of the hush puppies. Both are definitely a recommendation if you're feeling really hungry and want something not too heavy to eat. I'd say overall the atmosphere was good -- the locals and out of area people who do come in and have this ask us what our plates are, and I find that to be quite welcoming in many cases. Food My dish was the Jambalaya, which classic chicken and andouille sausage and nice tomatoey rice with mild spiciness and not overly salty. (4 stars). Two of my coworkers raved about the fried catfish - crispy outside and soft inside. Our New Orleans colleague even verified with the waitress that it was indeed catfish and not tilapia, which has far less flavor. On the negatives, several coworkers found the hushpuppies to be on the dry side. Definitely want to return to sample their other offerings, and perhaps stay for beignets and chicory coffee. I've been to NOLA before for a super quick work conference and was unimpressed by the gumbo and Du Monde beignets I had so I didn't have high hopes for this meal but boy was I delighted with how delicious and luscious everything was! The decor inside is super NOLA vibes, and the waiters are dressed in all black- so it definitely sets the mood. My friend and I split three dishes and left super full and happy. The voodoo shrimp appetizer was recommended to us by our waitress and I'm so glad we ordered it. The shrimp is big and tender but the sauce steaks the show. It's so buttery, rich and luscious and the soft white bread makes the perfect vehicle to eat up all the sauce! The crawfish etouffe was also amazing. It was my first time trying crawfish (kinda like baby lobsters) and etouffe. I found it similar but less punchy than the voodoo shrimp sauce. Luscious, rich, feels like a warm hug. We ended with beignets and I kid you not I thought these were better than cafe du monde and the Disneyland ones. These beignets were crispy on the outside, had a good, not greasy exterior, and a truly soft and fluffy interior. I only wish that the covered the beignets with sugar for us or gave us a paper bag to do so! I'll give them a top rating. I'm not from Louisiana but my mom was and she cooked a lot of southern food. I get the feeling they took her cook book. The atmosphere is very southern and inviting. It's a little dark in there, but gives you the feeling that You're in the French quarter. My wife got the catfish with hush puppies and that again was the winner. She always picks the best dish. The hush puppies were seasoned to perfection and they gave you six with this dish. The catfish had a lot of cornmeal, but not too grainy. They also had some dipping sauces for both of those items. We got a side order of red beans and rice and it was yummy for my tummy. The smoked meat in the beans was not overpowering, but gave the beans the right taste for this dish. I ordered the crawfish étouffée, which was also buttery and the perfect comfort food for me. Although I've had better étouffée in the French Quarter, this was definitely above average and I would order it again. Prices are also fair. Parking for us was great but some nights it can be difficult. We just got a couple of beers so not sure about the other beverage options. We're going back soon. read more
