I've walked past this place in downtown SJ for 4 years witnessing how popping it can be and finally tried it on a night when everyone else was at the World Cup. We ordered: - beef skewer appetizer: holy shit this was good! Moist and tender beef with a smoky coconutty flavor, balanced by the bright and crunchy vegetable salad (no limp garnish here!) - Fermented mustard greens with pork: similar to Sichuan sauerkraut fish in terms of punchiness but balanced by the earthy pork and mild rice - Amok (sp?): catfish cooked into a sort of frittata-esque texture in a banana leaf. This was so hard to describe but so yummy and interesting - Fried rice with sausage: umami but still with a healthy dose of vegetables - Mango sticky rice: a little bland - could have been more coconuty, though it's always hard to make this with out of season mangos - The other sticky rice dessert: so fun to unwrap the banana leaf it was steamed in, and much more coconuty after the side of milk was poured over Overall every flavor was so complex and interesting - I would love to come back and try more dishes! Angkor is a hidden gem in the heart of Silicon Valley, downtown San Jose. The food is traditional Cambodian and tastes exactly like the food I got to try and fall in love with while traveling through Cambodia and the rest of Southeast Asia. The Amok is my favorite dish on the menu. It's made of catfish marinated in coconut, lemongrass and guajillo peppers that is slow baked in a banana leaf and topped with coconut cream sauce. The way it is cooked gives this dish a soft soufflé- like texture. For those of you who don't like fish, this is the dish to try. You wouldn't know it is fish at all! The papaya salad is also delicious and refreshing! Not pictured are the loat cha pearl noodles with shrimp simple and delicious, perfectly balanced with a squirt of lemon! Delicious Cambodian spot! The papaya salad was refreshing, flavorful, and not spicy, and the amok (catfish egg soufflé-like dish) was incredibly delicious. Was my first time having the dish so don't have a point of comparison, but I thought it was really good--I love the texture of steamed egg and to me it was basically a very flavorful egg soufflé. On the smaller side though so you may want to order something else if you're hungry and looking for volume. Server was friendly and helpful with providing recommendations and explanations of dishes. Located in downtown San Jose, we came here for lunch during Fanime. It wasn't super busy when we went and there were a couple other customers there with us too. Looks fancy inside and unlike the other more smaller, aged mom and pop Cambodian restaurants I've been too, but makes sense if they want to appeal to the people who work and frequent Downtown San Jose. Despite this, it's a place to get some traditional Khmer food and they're known for their award wining lemongrass paste. For our meal, we got the: 1) Somlaw Machu Kroeung: -This is a soup made with lots of veggies. The base is Prahok (pungent salted fermented fish paste), lemon grass and coconut cream with tamarind. It's served with a side of rice. -The flavor profile of this soup is naturally salty and sour, 2 things, I'm not that big of a fan of. I'm sure the soup tastes fine and perfect for people who love the flavor, BUT, it wasn't my thing and after a couple tries, I was done with it. 2) Loat Cha: -This is a popular Cambodian street food dish. It's pearl noodles pan fried with eggs, bean sprout and green onion and served with a side of chrouk metae (Cambodian chili oil paste - sort of like Sambal, but with more focus on the chili aspect). -The pearl noodles were unique and I liked the texture of it. -I didn't order this dish, since, despite being SE Asian, I DESPISE bean sprouts, so I was eating around as much of it as I could and it ended up with me just picking at the dish where my boyfriend mostly ate it. Our friend, who has pickier tastes, couldn't really eat beyond sampling what we ordered, got a stir fried rice dish and at the end of the meal said he didn't really like any of the dishes we had that day. We came on a Saturday looking for a different cuisine and were pleasantly surprised that there were lunch specials (30% off)! Having traveled abroad, this establishment was a complete disappointment. The dishes were just salt upon salt upon even more salt. All you tasted was salt. The eggs in the noodle were MASSIVE to the point I shrieked when I thought it was chicken (I do not consume poultry). On top of that, service was a major let down. Service-wise (via a male), he took his sweet time. However, food-wise (via a female), she was attentive, caring and thoughtful. We were in a hurry and food came out quickly (whereas the table next to us complained of the sluggish food prep). Additionally, if we needed something, the female handed it to us fairly quickly. However... regarding the male, you want to order? You have to walk to the counter. You need take out containers? You have to walk to the counter. You want to pay? You have to walk to the counter (this happened to the other table as well). Very modern decor. Casual dining (almost bordering on fine in comparison to the other establishments in the area). Due to how expensive each dish is, I wouldn't come here for parties or in a group setting. Located in downtown SJ (near SJSU), parking is complicated. During the weekend day hours (with no events), no parking garages were opened (at least when we went). There's street parking that's only free after 6pm on Saturdays and all day on Sundays. Will I come back? Heck no. Afterwards, I literally went to Subway and purchased a sandwich--now that's just sad. If you love salt and love walking, this place is for you. read more

I'd walked by Angkor Chef a bunch of times and I'm so glad we finally made time before a show at the SJ Center for the Performing Arts. I actually left my credit card here after by accident after the meal but they messaged me in Open Table from my (completely unnecessary) reservation right after we left so I popped right back over. Special thanks for that too. The space was very sophisticated and clean but most importantly, the food was great. Our server was super nice and talked us through the menu, which was important because we didn't know what to expect given our unfamiliarity with Cambodian cuisine. We started with the Plear which was described on the menu as "Khmer Ceviche" (with salmon, red onion, garlic, string beans, red bell pepper and cilantro) and it was awesome. The dish was served with fried rice noodles shaped like diagonal cut slices of bread to scoop up the lovely bits. It really was like a ceviche - pleasantly sour but completely delicious. For entrees I had Angkor Noodles cooked in a chile paste sauce that was a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy. Really great. My wife was more adventurous and tried the Amok which was like nothing we'd ever had before. It was like a little catfish stew served with rice and was really interesting. Our server said it was one of their most popular dishes and I loved it but my wife was less jazzed, I think because it was so different from what we're used to. For dessert we had a Lotus Blossom Cookie called a Nom Pkah Chan, which is a sweet rice flour cookie that the restaurant served over Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream. This place is like a hidden gem in Downtown SJ. They re-did the interior, feels elevated, clean, and has good central AC very cool inside even on a hot day. My bf noticed this place while passing by and we finally got to check it out. We got the spring rolls, Amok, and Papaya salad. Everything was very good and fresh. My bf described it as tasting healthy and not oily and heavy like some places. This Cambodian food tastes true to its origin yet elevated western. The papaya salad was refreshing with a kick of spice. Not overly fish sauced, not sure what sauce was used but it was good! The spring rolls was so well constructed the cross section looks like art. The sauce is not normal peanut sauce tho, tamarind sauce, so unexpected and unique. The Amok is their best seller and it is a Casserole steamed curry fish dish! Great option for a pre-show meal - we enjoyed the Cambodian cuisine here before walking over to the the San Jose Civic. I ordered pineapple curry with chicken, which had lots of fresh vegetables, but was on the watery side. Our beef skewers appetizer was the highlight for me. We loved this spot! several of us had lunch here while at a conference earlier this week, and every dish, every appetizer was a hit. My wife had a beef in green curry soup, I had the Angkor noodles with chicken, we traded off partway through so we could both enjoy each. Papaya salad also got rave reviews. Came here before a Sharks game and the food was absolutely delicious! We got Angkor Noodles and Bok Lahong. Both dishes were amazing!! The Bok Lahong has a perfect level of spiciness and the salted crab in it really is a showstopper. The Angkor Noodles also were super yummy, the coconut milk adds a great sweetness. However, I did have some notes about the service. First of all, no one checked on us for pretty much the entire meal. Additionally, when we finished our meals we waited for 15 minutes with empty plates and no one brought the dessert menu or the check until I had to stop a different server walking by. The oddest part was when I tried to order the Bok Lahong, our server tried to talk me out of it by saying the dish is "stinky and funky" and that I should just order something else. I just think it's quite odd to use such negative connotations to describe a dish. You can describe a flavor profile to me without trying to persuade me to order a different item. And good thing I didn't listen to him because it was AMAZING!! Overall though, I would come back because the food was genuinely incredible! read more

I enjoyed the beef skewers and the amok. Highly recommend. The amok is like a soufflé with catfish that was perfectly cooked. The beef skewers were tender and easy to chew. Did not enjoy the crispy rice on the natang. It was too hard. However, the shrimp and chicken were good. The ginger chicken was just okay. I took my work team for holiday lunch at our favorite Cambodian restaurant in Downtown San Jose, Angkor Chef. Dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients by co-owner Chef Channy Chhi Laux. We each ordered a dish and shared with each other. We've had meals here before and have totally enjoyed what we ordered. This time around we had the Lok Lak (Steak and Salad), Angkor Noodles with shrimp, and Salmon with Mango Salad. We ended the meal with desserts that we shared: one called Nom Pkah Chan (a seasonal dessert, lotus blossom cookie with vanilla ice cream), and Jackfruit Rice, sticky rice made with mung bean topped with Jackfruit sitting in coconut sauce. The ambiance is warm with friendly service. Chef Channy's husband and co-owner Kent comes out to greet patrons to ask how their meal was. This is a very cute little restaurant, and the chef and staff are nice. We came for lunch, and the food was excellent--fresh, flavorful, and delicious. Perfect for vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians, and meat eaters too. We were three people, and we had: Vegan fresh rolls with tasty dipping sauce Amok: Catfish, egg, kale, and coconut milk in a banana leaf bowl Ginger tofu with rice Lemongrass tofu with rice Mango and sticky rice for dessert Each item was beautifully plated, fresh, and perfect amount of spice and flavor. I went here with my extended family during their soft opening earlier in the year. Even though the restaurant is small, our party of 6 got seated immediately near 7PM, an hour before they closed. Everybody was friendly and there was a decent amount of people inside. We ordered a lot of things, including amok, beef skewers, plear, egg rolls, green curry, and somlaw machu. After our initial order we got added on some stir fried pickled green mustard with beef and lote cha. Some spelling of the menu items are different from other Khmer restaurants in places such as Long Beach but we still knew what they were. The chairs felt a little bit short and the restaurant had a clean and modern look to it. Service was also quick, with our first items coming in less than 10 minutes after ordering. The beef skewers came in orders of 3, so we got 3 orders. The beef skewers are something that my family almost always orders whenever we go to a Cambodian restaurant. They were on the smaller side and not as good as some other Khmer restaurants, but still tasted good. Steamed rice came in a big bowl. The plear came with some crispy rice that I liked a lot and also some green beans. The plear itself was pretty good. Pickled red cabbage that came with the beef sticks and egg rolls had a hint of mint, which was pretty cool. I'm used to seeing pickled daikon and carrots instead of red cabbage but it still tasted good. There was not much to write home about the egg rolls. The soups that we got (curry and somlaw machu) were individual sized. We asked for some soup bowls so we can share and they accommodated. The curry had tender chicken and a mild taste. The somlaw machu was under the prahok section in the menu and did have a zingy smell, as expected. The amok was my favorite dish of the night. The coconut cream makes it so creamy. The rest of my party expected a bit more of a spicy kick, but I didn't care. The lote cha was good too and I especially liked the sauce. We got a sample of pickled mustard green. It didn't feel pickled enough for me. By special request, they made us sautéed pickled mustard greens with beef (my favorite dish at home). It had a sweet tang to it and it was pretty good. I am used to and like it more acidic, so this was a cool interpretation. Overall I'm happy that a modern Khmer restaurant opened in San Jose and I really enjoyed my experience here. What a lucky and wonderful find! We were celebrating my (vegan) daughter's birthday and arrived at the restaurant next door for a dinner reservation to find that it was closed for some health code reason. Given that we had theater tickets and it was a Saturday night, a bit of panic set in. Then our daughter saw Angkor next door, loved the vegan options and they were able to fit us in. Service was lovely, the food absolutely delish -- both for the vegan and non-vegan among us -- and we left on time and totally happy. We will definitely be back and highly recommend. read more

This had been on my list to visit and I'm so glad I finally made it by. There are a lot of great looking menu items and it was hard to choose. We started with the mini egg rolls, but there's a great selection of small plates. We then had the Pickled Green Mustard Stir-Fry and the Lote Cha noodles. Both were so good! The stir fry had a great blend of flavors the the noodles were not like anything I've ever had, so tasty! They also come with a great little hot sauce on the side. We had to try Cambodian food after reading the reviews and while it was good, I can't say it was amazing with the spices a bit muted. Service was not special or overly welcoming. For someone new to their menu, I would have liked a bit more...here's some favorites. Maybe it was an off day but the service was reserved and the two kept to themselves. The setting was comfortable but a bit cold, too. It's located on light rail corridor so parking was easy off a side street. The red curry soup was a bit watery with chicken, bamboo, string beans and paired with rice. The Amok took several bites to come more to life as it seemed prepared in the banana leaf bowl and reheated. All things considered, it was a decent meal but not necessarily wanting to come back any time too soon. YMMV. read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant when we had reservations for another nearby restaurant and they were not able to seat us. So we went to Angkor and were not really familiar with Cambodian cuisine. Geographically, Cambodia is located in between Vietnam and Thailand. So, if you love Thai & Vietnamese food you'll love Cambodian cuisine as it is basically a mash-up of these two foods. They did a nice job of redoing the look of the place from the previous restaurant. All of the food was good. The green curry was very flavorful, the salmon was perfectly prepared and we really liked the mango rice dessert. I would have given them 5 stars but they need to work on the front of the house as we had to wait to be seated in what at the time was an empty house. They did however filled up quickly after we arrived. I was unable to make a reservation online as we already had a reservation at the other restaurant but I would highly recommend it. They also need to place a sign in front that says "Wait to be Seated" as there is no hostess stand and everyone that comes in is confused as to whether to stay up front or go to the back bar. They have effectively used every bit of space in this small restaurant but it also leaves no space for waiting guests to stand until a table is available. A bench or some chairs outside would be good solution. The service was efficient but a smile goes a long way. All that being said, I would definitely go back! read more

I recently spotted Angkor Chef when my husband and I were walking around downtown. I bookmarked the restaurant to hopefully go for a sit down dinner in the future since the place looked pretty. A few weeks later I saw that Angkor Chef was on Doordash, so rather than wait indefinitely to go in-person I decided to place a delivery order. I'm not familiar with Cambodian cuisine at all and honestly didn't have a clue as to what to get. The description of Lote Cha intrigued me. It was called a traditional Cambodian "street food" noodle dish. I figured it was comparable to Pad Thai. Since it was off their popularly ordered menu, it seemed to be my safe bet. What a unique noodle dish! It's nothing like Pad Thai in terms of flavor and even texture. I've never seen the short pin noodles before, which were cooked perfectly al dente, and the flavor of the sauce was heavier on the fish sauce. I enjoyed it, but it was too fishy for my husband. He loved the taro bites that I got as a side though! They weren't extra crispy as I imagine they would've been if we received them fresh out of the fryer (unfortunate downside to Doordash), but I was also pleasantly surprised by the flavor and texture. I've had taro fries before, but I liked how Angkor Chef cut them thinly into matchsticks. Interestingly the taro bites had a nice sweetness to it that reminded me of churros?! It's been awhile since I've been pleasantly surprised by a restaurant--brava. My friend and I stopped by this place before a concert and ordered the Sausage Trio, Mini Egg Rolls, Pineapple Curry, and Angkor Noodles. The standout was the homemade sausage, how they pack so much flavor into each one is INSANE!!! Kent, one of the co-owners, was our server and was so intentional with the pacing of the food and provided lovely conversation with the history of his passion project. Walking in, their restaurant was so cute with the modern and light-toned decor and comfortable seating for such a small location. While they had bar seats and several tables, my party of 6 had the misfortune of coming in while there was already a reservation of 8 sitting at the long booth seating. Even though we crammed onto one table, the staff was helpful to bring us another table to combine and spread out to enjoy the meal! The staff was extremely helpful in explaining and recommending the items available. He identified some popular items and explained more of the intricacies of dishes that I never knew! I loved getting to experience the food with him and my friends. We tried many of their popular menu items and my favorite would have to have been the catfish and pearl noodles! The catfish was extremely tender and had so many good flavors. I enjoyed the soft texture and authentic flavors. The pearl noodles had a smokey flavor but the noodle texture was still on-point! They were chewy and famliar. Overall, all the items were great and this spot would be on my recommendation list for Cambodian food! read more
