FIRST TIMERS!! I took a 40 minute drive to check this spot out. I wanted to see what everyone was raving about. We're on a Saturday afternoon around 3 o'clock. Parking structure in the back, which was nice walked in staff was welcoming and friendly. I was very surprised to see that it was very inexpensive. Me and my boyfriend got the number one which consisted of two chicken sandwiches and the order of fries we also got one of the three bowls they offer. It consisted of fries, chopped up chicken topped with mac & cheese, which was delicious. They will serve you cold old rice and cold old sides... and gaslight you and say it's hot Diana G decided it was OK to argue with me on what was hot and what was cold.. who was right and who was wrong.. I've had this both in person and through delivery, and honestly--it's pretty addicting. Compared to Dave's Hot Chicken, I keep coming back here, and the biggest reason is the rice. It's not your typical plain rice--it tastes like jasmine rice, and when you combine it with their sauce, mac & cheese, tenders, coleslaw, and pickles, it all just works really well together. The sandwich is also really good. The bread is soft, so it's easy to eat and doesn't feel heavy. I've ordered the Hangry Fix and the Classics 3 both times, tried mild, and medium. I think I'll stick with mild definitely has a kick. Compared to Dave's, I'd say their medium feels closer to a "hot" level. Their sauce is another highlight--way better than Raising Cane's in my opinion, and a bit closer to Dave's style but still its own thing. Price-wise, it's not bad at all, especially compared to Howlin' Ray's. I don't get to have this often since I only go when I'm in Los Angeles, but it's definitely a must every time I'm there. My spice tolerance is pretty damn high and the past few days, I've been craving something that'll hit that "spot" of spicy but not "why did I do this to myself" spicy. I decided to go here today because I saw something that other Nashville hot chicken spots don't offer. RICE! I was at work, and during my break, I wanted to look more in depth on their food before placing my order. I looked all over yelp, google, and even Reddit. This place looked promising. Initially when I was creating my cart, I was going to go with "Angry" level, but I was a bit hesitant due to what people were saying on Reddit; I was literally telling myself "I know my spice tolerance is pretty high, but I also have work in the morning". Instead, I changed my Hangry Fix bowl to hot, and got a tender w/ extra hot just in case. When I arrived, I told them I had a mobile order and I asked this gentleman(I think his name was Alejandro?) about the spice level for Angry. He told me it's Carolina reaper, and that it's pretty spicy, but if i already got extra hot, then this shouldn't be that bad. He then offered to let me try a fry with Angry, just so i can have a general idea of what to expect. I just needed to sign the waiver. I was very hesitant because of what I had read online, but in the end, I said screw it. I signed the waiver, and he gave me a small tray with 3 fries and the Angry seasoning. I ate 1, nothing too bad. Then ate another, I was like "okay, it really isn't bad. It's not that spicy at all. It has a kick" then I proceeded to eat the last fry. I can sense the spice in the back of my throat starting to tingle, but that's about it. I thanked Alejandro and went on my way. On my way back home(2-3 mins away) I can feel the spice starting to kick in. And honestly, this is what I was hoping for. The spice was starting to come in. I can feel the heat burning my lips, inside of my mouth, and starting to get the sweats. IT REALY HIT THE SPOT. Overall, it was really good. Howlin Ray's might be the best of the best, but Angry Chickz is the next best tasting without having to endure the Howlin Ray's line. The chicken is meaty af, seasoned to perfection, and the batter has the right amount of crunch without it feeling heavy. The seasoning on the fries are my favorite, reminds me of the fries when Dave's was hitting, except they're not crinkle cut (if Angry Chickz did crinkle cut, they might be the GOAT overall). The toast is reminiscent of Raising Cane's, and their comeback sauce is up there with Howlin's. I also remember having this tied with Dave's when Dave's was at its peak (when they had only one store). The fact that Angry Chickz has been consistent all this time is really impressive, especially since Dave's has significantly gone down in quality since franchising. Was in the area last Sunday and my son who's into trying any chicken tenders or sandwich found this on yelp so he said we should have some to go so he can eat it on the way home. We got here closer to 4pm, there's parking in the back so it was easy to get to. Dining area was empty, there was a just a group seated outside. The restaurant has enough seats inside and outside so that dining in will be convenient so I would think they are probably busy most days. My son ordered the combo 1 which comes with coleslaw, chicken sliders (mild spice level) and ordered extra Mac and cheese. I got just the chicken sandwich and took the coleslaw my son has and I have to say that the chicken held up really well when I ate it at home 30 mins after. The spice level is just right for me - I ordered medium - just the right heat. Chicken was tender and moist. I've tried Howlin' Ray's, Dave's Hot Chicken, and Angry Chickz. If I were to rate each of these places SOLELY based on taste (of the chicken and not anything else), I'd give Howlin' a 10, Angry Chickz a 9.5, and Dave's an 8. Service wise, Dave's takes the win, but Howlin' is a close second. Accessibility wise, Dave's wins by default cus it has the most locations and stays open the latest depending on the location you go to. Wait wise, Angry Chickz takes the win. Parking wise, I've never had an issue finding a spot at Angry Chickz. If I were to compare these places based on sides, then Angry Chickz has my vote because their cole slaw, pickles, mac n cheese, and buttery rice are FIRE! Plus, I don't like bread (which is why I mainly stick to tenders), so the fact that they offer rice is a complete game changer. Fries from all three places are equally good. Other than flavor, 2 reasons why Howlin' Ray's has an advantage over the other two: 1) It travels slightly better than the other two (I've dined in and ordered take out from all 3 places) 2) For Angry Chickz and Dave's, if you order anything above medium or hot, the flavor significantly goes down and the spice overpowers the taste. However, with Howlin', I've ordered every spice level on the spectrum (even howlin', which put me in pain for 3.5 days), and as spicy as the food may have been,I was still always able to taste the flavor. But anyway, I'll say this. If I were doing take out, I'd choose Howlin over Angry Chickz. If I were dining in, it'd just be a coin toss between the two. On the search for a really good chicken sandwich and this place was pretty close. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, crispy and delicious. The portions were pretty big too! The light spice was just enough for me to have a good kick and was still so delicious.
