LOVE: The service and hospitality shown to me on my first visit to Angry Pete's were outstanding. The food--at least the Ezzo SS Pepperoni and Mushroom Ravioli Detroit-style squares--was absolutely delicious. The pizza was served hot and fresh with excellent flavor. I've never been to Detroit, but if the pizza there tastes anything like this, I'm sold! I also love the convenience of being only about a mile from my workplace, their very reasonable prices (especially by today's standards), and the abundance of easy parking. DIDN'T LOVE: The ambiance. I admit I'm probably more particular than the average customer when it comes to cleanliness, organization, presentation, and overall upkeep. Since Angry Pete's is operating out of a converted Taco Bell, the resemblance is immediately noticeable, and I felt the space could use a bit more of its own identity and personality. A small detail that stood out was that the condiment station was out of red pepper flakes, although the very friendly server quickly provided some from behind the ordering counter. Overall, I really enjoyed my first experience at Angry Pete's and will definitely be back. However, because the atmosphere isn't my favorite part of the experience, future visits may be more suited for takeout, especially with the convenience of their drive-thru pickup window.
Came here right near the end of their "Angry Hour," which worked out perfectly because we were able to take advantage of the deal. We went with the special that included a full Detroit-style pizza and two beers for $28, which honestly felt like a steal. For the pizza, we chose the Lions, Tigers, & Wolverines. The flavor was great, and the crust was just as good. Crispy, airy, and exactly what you'd want from a Detroit-style pizza. The real star of the experience, though, is the location itself. The restaurant is inside an old Taco Bell, and it genuinely feels like stepping into a time machine when you walk in. As someone who loves the Bell, I thought that was such a fun and unique touch. Overall, it's a great pizza spot that's definitely worth trying and in my opinion, you have to dine inside to get the full experience.
In my current quest for delicious pizza I wanted to try this place. I had wanted to get the round lions tigers and wolverines pizza "Ezzo SS pepperoni, apple-wood smoked bacon, ground beef, 3 cheese blend (Grande mozzarella, provolone & fresh grated parmesan cheeses). " but my husband talked me into the secret baco tell Ground beef, special Baco Tell supremo pizza with "seasoning, nacho cheese, heirloom cherry tomatoes, shredded lettuce, hot sauce." I knew I was unlikely to like Detroit style pizza as I grew up in St. Louis and am all about that thin crust like but I grew up in the midwest and love a taco pizza (IYKYK) so I decided to go with it. My husband did not get it without hot sauce which surprised me cause he can't tolerate hot anything. I ordered for pick up and he went to grab it. The pizza made it home and was hot and loaded with toppings. It looked delicious. This is where it went wrong for me personally on several points. The crust. It is THICK. I mean don't get me wrong they told me what I was getting and I allowed myself to be overruled. It was thick and pillow-y and focaccia like just like they said it would be. Make a delicious bread and I could have dipped it in some olive oil with spices but not want I wanted in pizza. The next issue for me personally was the ground beef. I don't think it was the ground beef itself but the seasoning used on it. It reminded me more of the beef taste you would have in chili than on pizza or even for Baco Tell. It did not remind me of that place or tacos in general. The nacho cheese was also just meh. It did not have a lot of taste/flavor either so this whole pie was a miss for me. I still want to try and round pie as I think the flavor combos they have are interesting and worth exploring but now I know that the taco pizza and Detroit style is not for me.
Incredibly disappointed that this site has to close. We came in for our last hotdog. We've enjoyed this location and hope angry Pete finds a new place to express his delicious anger. Dog is great. Just had to write one last review. Will miss you.
As a born & raised Detroiter I haven't been able to find a legit Detroit style pizza in San Diego until now. Square Pizza Co. is utter , owner isn't even from Michigan, he's from Wisconsin, and Prince Street pizza is even worse. Angry Pete's gets everything right, from the blue steel industrial pans, to the Wisconsin block cheese, to the 2 stripes of sauce, and pepperoni cups that catch the grease. Their coney dogs are equally great, with both the coney dogs and the carne chili imported from Michigan. Not to mention the selection of Michigan Better Made chips, Fago Pop, Michigan craft beer, and even U.P. Fudge! I've referred over 100 people to try this place, which makes me so sad that they are closing! BEST PIZZA IN TOWN!! So sad to hear they are closing.
If you like your pizza thick, square, and unapologetically saucy, Angry Pete's Pizza is calling. This is legit Detroit-style pizza The pizza itself was tasty, with a sauce that had a nice sweet heat to it. Not overpowering. The edges were nice, though I'll admit I would've loved the crust to be a little crispier and a little thicker (think that Jet's Pizza-). But overall? Solid. Very solid. And they didn't stop at pizza. They brought the full Detroit lineup w/Coney dogs and Detroit-style loose burger? The onion and mustard combo was straight fire. If you're craving authentic Detroit flavors, Angry Pete's is worth the stop. It's still a strong contender.
I'm not sure who Pete is or why he is so angry but I wasn't angry after enjoying this fun restaurant where you can find all things Detroit. They have Detroit (and Michigan) sports flags and banners everywhere, and Detroit sodas (Faygo) and beers (like Founders), too, but the reason you stopped by is for the Detroit-style pizza which is probably one of the best pizza styles out there. The crisp, raised, cheesy, buttery crust is fantastic. We tried the Lions, Tigers, and Wolverines Detroit-style pizza (which is not explained anywhere but is basically a meat lovers) and it was excellent although the crust was not as crispy as I would have liked. It probably could have used a little bit more time in the oven. We also ordered a pepperoni Detroit-style and the crust was nice and crisp and perfect. The toppings were generous on both pizzas. They have several video game machines off to the side and they are freeee which is great customer service. Also, there are TVs everywhere, so you can watch any number of different games while you dine. I've had real Detroit pizza in Detroit and this is the real deal. I still don't see why Pete or anyone else should be angry. You should be angry if you don't give them a try.
Do you want to get pizza at an old 90s style Taco Bell? Yes! Detroit style pizza is so good, I love the crust. There's many many toppings/flavor combos to choose from. I tried a pepperoni and a Nashville hot chicken slice. Both were tasty, my only complaint is that the tomato sauce is in the sweeter side. They offer a selection of craft beers and happy hour specials. Service was helpful and friendly. They also sell lots of Faygo products, I can't really speak to this since the only thing I know about Faygo was learned against my will by the Insane Clown Posse
As a Michigander who's been in San Diego for 16 years, this was a TON of fun. The ambiance is 100% why I would return. It was like being in downtown Detroit with all your favorite options. So many Faygo and MI beer options, as well as all your favorite Michigan foods. We tried a couple of pizzas and they were really tasty. We also had a coney dog, which was just like they make them back home. The Beer Battered PB&J was SO good. It is super decadent, though, so I recommend sharing it.
I've been coming here periodically since they first opened, I think it's been almost two years? It's right next to the campus I work on, and we pass it every week on our Starbucks walk. When we first visited, we were a little confused about the decor. This place used to be a Taco Bell that had seemingly been unrenovated since the 90s, and it obviously shows. I don't know how long the Taco Bell sat vacant for, but my coworkers recall when it was open. I think it closed due to the pandemic. But everything seems largely unchanged from its Taco Bell days, with even a still-utilized drive thru window and the front counter menu light box thingies from a begone era just displaying different physical pages of (perhaps too many) food options. In those first few months, service was also a bit lacking. It took some time for them to work out the kinks, as I received (very) late orders on a timed lunch break more than once, and you could tell that the few employees who were working in the beginning were stressed. Truly, what kept bringing me back was the taste of the food, and the neighborly attitudes of the employees. Each new pizza I tried was packed with flavor, with many fun combinations and seasonal offerings, and through the stress you could tell that the employees really wanted to be there and hoped you enjoyed your experience. What I originally considered to be dated (and maybe even lazy) about this place has actually become one of the things I like about it the most. It seems like their aim is to make you feel nostalgic--about everything--and even if you're not a 90s kid from Michigan, they've succeeded. The crust of these Detroit-style pizzas is perfectly soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. I'd say a whole, four-square pizza is a little too much food for one person, but even after two slices I always find myself eyeing a third. The toppings on each pizza are well-balanced and some are uncommonly seen elsewhere. I haven't tried a pizza I didn't like here, and occasionally I'll venture out and try some other seasonal offerings or Michigan faves. I didn't grow up drinking Faygo but for some reason, I feel like I had? With each new flavor I wonder how I had survived drinking another bottle, and I wonder what my next will be. Anyway, they now have a decent flow of customers, and are far from their early days of having 30 minute wait times for pizza in a restaurant with no A/C. You've always been greeted warmly, and you always will be. I will continue to visit Angry Pete's for as long as I eat pizza and work, and I don't see myself stopping either any time soon.
Angry Pete's is a hidden gem in Clairemont. Formerly a Taco Bell and not heavily renovated, you automatically feel like you've been transported into a 90's sports movie based in Michigan lol. This is a great place to watch any sports game as there are a few TVs mounted on the walls. There are so many pizza flavor/topping options (classics and specialties), appetizers, and drinks. The consistency and texture of the pizza crust is for sure going to win me over anyway--crunchy on the outer parts and nice and fluffy in the middle. Definitely coming back!
This place exceeded expectations! The perfect Detroit style pizza. The bread is so fluffy. The crusted cheese on the edge adds the perfect crunch. MUST TRY the brick sticks. The cheese pull is insane, and the crust is perfect. Treat yourself to the beer battered PB&J, trust me!! Staff is always VERY friendly. They also have a drive thru & free arcade games inside. Tons of seating available. Great deals on game days.
Food I have only tried the pizza from here but it was delicious! The Detroit style pizza is so full of flavor as they do not skimp out on any of the ingredients. The sides are baked to be a little crispy. It is a killer pricey for the size though, so be forewarned! Service The staff were kind and welcoming! We ordered for pick up and we were in and out in seconds. Ambience The decor is unique! I believe the building used to be a Taco Bell location and you can see some of the remnants still remain haha. It's so fun with retro style games and tv's to watch sports.
I had to come today when I heard on social that AP will be closing this month (I think June 21, 2026?). I have wanted to try their pizza and fried zucchini for ages now so today seemed to be the best day for us to visit. Friend is a huge fan of this place and offered to treat for a late lunch. Plenty of parking this Sunday afternoon. There were a few customers inside. There were several tvs playing sports so that was fun. You order at the counter, pay, and wait for them to call your name. I ordered the slice of Spartan Sausage Onion & Pepper Pizza for $5.50. It was a nice chunky size that reminded me of fresh baked focaccia bread. The red sauce was my absolute favorite part of this pizza - it tasted so fresh and bright. The fried zucchini had 8 large pieces. The presentation was EPIC! And came with two sides of ranch. I LOVED the zucchini!! It was perfectly battered, salted, and seasoned. An amazing deal for $14. I want to come back JUST for this and to order a full Detroit pizza to bring home for everyone to share. I tried a bite of the Coney dog and didn't love it. Tasted average and the hot dog was lukewarm. I am hoping to make a trip here this week to support them one last time. read more
Sad to see these guys close. Not many pizza joints offered a Detroit style pizza. Was just there a couple months ago and several months back and was never disappointed in the quality and friendly service. It looked thick and heavy but was actually light and airy believe it or not. Never saw many people in here but they did have a following at this former Taco Bell location. The listing for the Point Loma location (which I believe is in a bar) still exists on Yelp but do they exist? That is the question to be answered. Hopefully will see them again someday. read more
A friend told me that they wanted to check this place out, so we went together. What an interesting pizza place. It's inside an old Taco Bell that still has the old seating and everything. It was like going back in time to an old Taco Bell, but there were Detroit flags and posters all over and all the lights had covers over them to change the ambiance. They have a couple of arcade machines to play for free while you're waiting too. The pizzas are just ok because they are pre-cooked. They add toppings and sauces and reheat. This causes the meats to be dried out. They do have a lot of options and interesting pizza combos though. The majority of the pizzas are square Detroit-style, but they do have some round pizzas as well. They also offer craft beers and some different drink options you don't usually find at restaurants. Also, if you don't want to go in, they have a drive-thru. Overall, the pizza options are different and varied. The pizzas are just ok, not great but not bad. The ambiance is retro and interesting. Angry Pete's Pizza - 4 Stars (with an asterisk) Tucked into a former Taco Bell that clearly never got the renovation memo, Angry Pete's Pizza is the kind of place that feels like it was opened on a dare. The old purple-and-pink Taco Bell decor is still there, the same bolted-down table-and-chair combos that have survived three decades of spilled Baja Blast are still bolted to the floor, and someone took the classic bell logo, gave it an angry eyes, a yelling mouth, and turned the clapper into a tongue, then slapped it on the menu. It's gloriously half-assed in the funniest possible way. Ordering was... an adventure. The staff are genuinely friendly, but we definitely had a few "wait, what?" moments (think two people smiling and nodding while talking about completely different things). It's chaotic in a charming, punk-show kind of way. Now, the pizza itself: this is legitimately an inside-out pizza. Dough, Cheese and toppings go down first, then a blanket of sauce on top--like a Detroit-style had a crisis and decided to flip the script. The result looks wild and is an absolute mess to eat. Sauce drips everywhere, and you'll give up on slices and just attack it with a fork about halfway through. Flavor-wise, it's solid: good cheese pull, decent pepperoni, but the sauce leans noticeably sweet (almost marinara-meets-barbecue territory). Cleanliness was honestly better than I feared for a converted fast-food joint--tables wiped, floors not sticky, no visible health-code nightmares. Couldn't spot the health department grade anywhere, though, which always makes me nervously knock on wood and hope for that "A." Objectively, this is a 3-star experience: clunky execution, messy eating, slightly confusing service. But I'm bumping it to 4 because the sheer audacity of taking a defunct Taco Bell, keeping literally everything except the menu, and serving inverted pizza under an Angry bell mascot is the kind of weird, creative energy I want to see survive. It's not for everyone (and definitely not for first dates), but if you're into culinary chaos and nostalgia soaked in marinara, swing by and decide for yourself. Go once. Get the greasiest inside-out slice you can handle. Live más... or whatever the angry version of that is. read more
We've been here a few times and I have to say, I really enjoy most of the pizzas. My son loves simple pepperoni pizza, while I am more adventurous. The first time I came we ordered a Ezzo SS Pepperoni and Cherry BBQ Chicken Pizza. The pepperoni was good and it was finished. The crust is very tasty. I didn't care for the Cherry BBQ Chicken PIzza. It was just OK in my opinion. It kind of had a frozen chicken tender flavor on the pizza and it wasn't my thing. I normally love BBQ chicken pizzas. On the last visit my son ordered the Ezzo SS Pepperoni and I couldn't decide between the bacon Mac and Cheese or the angry hawaiian, so I asked the lady at the front and she recommended the bacon mac and cheese. Well, I am happy to say it was an excellent recommendation. The pizza was piping hot and super cheesy and creamy. While I was eating my slice of deliciousness, a gentlemen a couple tables over was watching me and asked what I was eating. I told him, he said it looked so good he would order in next time. He got up and a few minutes later came back to tell me he changed his order. It looks that good and tasted even better. This will totally be my go-to mac and cheese pizza. I just might be crazy and next time add pepperoni to it as well. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. This is a great pizza shop in a great location. read more
Came about 11.5 months ago, they ran out of burgers, I wrote about it, and the owner told me to try Jack in the box (I did). They did have a smash burger 4 me this time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, much better than Jack's. I wanted the onion rings too, another $11.00, outch! The games are free, and the TV is too, plenty of parking. Will return, I think they even have a drive Thursday, not sure. read more

Pizza lovers must try their offerings. Whether you like square, round or by the slide, they've got it all and at reasonable prices. They also offer, Coney Style Dogs with hand cut onions! Wings by the pound too! All made fresh while you catch your favorite team play. Faygo - all varieties in plastic and glass as well as Vernor's. Many beers on tap. Ice cold! Don't forget the fudge! An old Taco Bell turned into a Detroit-style pizza joint with a drive-thru? Call Bizarro World and tell them to come collect their misplaced restaurant! Just kidding -- Angry Pete's is the real deal. I mean, it's some of the best pizza I have ever had, and I've been to Detroit, and to Italy, and to some weird pizza places in southern Mexico, for what it's worth. This place SMACKS! The dough is nonsensically delicious. It's fluffy, airy, flavorful, and acts as the perfect conveyor for the God-tier toppings and sauce that will soon ravish your tastebuds and leave you like a lovelorn adolescent when it's all over. This is pizza to the nth degree. This is Detroit fighting for the spotlight in the backwaters of Kearny Mesa, San Diego, California. The options are incredible -- habanero chicken pizza? Nashville chicken pizza? Birria pizza? Pickle bacon ranch pizza? Chicken Parmesan pizza? Animal style cheeseburger pizza? There's also craft beer on tap, classic canned beer options, and even Faygo slushies (whoop whoop)! Also on the menu are smash burgers, chicken wings, hot dogs, fries, cheese sticks, and more. 5/5 I will return. I did not know it was possible to have a juicy Smashburger, it was fire. Because of the sauce and the pickles it didn't need anything else. The wedge fries were massive and cooked perfectly, crunchy on the outside fluffy on the inside The service was great, I think Angry Pete took my order, he's super nice. This location used to be a Taco Bell. It's kind of cool they left the interior from the mid 90s. I will definitely be back to watch the game and get that BOGO wing special!!! read more

Okay okay this place is all that everyone here has raved about. The pizza dough was squishy and crispy all at the same time. The flavor was juicy I can tell you the sauce stood out. We had to also try the cheese sticks those were crispy and cheese pull WOW!!! Honorable mention for their ranch. Lastly the burger !! Delicious... the pickles and sauce together just had the perfect balance. I can not wait to come back and try more pizza. This place is legit. It deserves all its praise. read more

This pizza was exactly what I was craving for. A light thick deep dish with perfectly crusted edges. I love a simple pepperoni pizza, but I stepped out of my comfort zone and had these other ones, wow-delicious! This owner is from Detroit so he knows exactly what he's doing. Had to stop by Angry Pete's Pizza since I was in the area. I used the drive-thru option since it was a unique feature for a pizza joint. I ordered a slice of the Detroit style lions, tigers and wolverines. Fantastic crusty edge with a fluffy interior. The sauce is savory yet sweet at the same time. Nice flavor from the pepperoni, smoked bacon and ground beef. I really enjoyed this pizza. The Roman style slice was pretty tasty as well. Essentially a thin crust pizza. It had a nice crust with Italian sausage, pepperoncinis, minced onion and a 3 cheese blend. I don't know why it's called Angry Pete's, everyone was super friendly. I guess Friendly Pete's doesn't have the same flair as Angry Pete's. Overall, a must try spot. Not your average pizza restaurant. This one has character and some unique pizzas. read more
I would rather go 3.5 stars but since it's a local business and I think angry Pete is a great dude I'll round up. I've been wanting to come here ever since I tried the pizza at a Halloween event before COVID. However honestly I was a little disappointed. Surprisingly the pizza was not as good as I remembered. I got the cherry bbq chicken, we also got the Nashville hot chicken and pepperoni. I did like the texture of the pizza in general. Crispy sides as you would want and cheesy but to me the toppings on the pizzas were weird. My bbq chicken was heavy handed on the sauce. The bbq and whatever white sauce was wasn't very tasty. The Nashville hot was not hot. More of a regular buffalo sauce. The pepperoni seemed ok but it wasn't mine so i couldn't eat more than a bite. We also got the cheesy breadsticks. They were like a thin cheese pizza cut into sticks. And it came with a pizza sauce and a nacho cheese. The pizza sauce or whatever was stuffed with very large pieces of tomato or some sort of vegetable which was hard to dip and same with the nacho cheese. Ok Not a big nacho cheese girl anyways but I did prefer that one. As someone else said the drinks are not very cold but it nice to know you can ask for a cup of ice and I liked that they had a water stand. Will I be back? Not too sure. We don't live in the area and nothing would make me pass up trying a different local place when we are in the area next time but I'd say give it a shot for the pepperoni or one of the menu items. Ordered to go. Came in around lunchtime and the place is very retro, decked out like an arcade. I ordered two slices of the Detroit style pizza, and an Italian salad. Both pieces were good, lots of toppings and the bread was soft. The Italian salad felt very freshly tossed. All the staff were very friendly as well, feels very down to earth. I definitely want to go back and try their other flaves. read more

Detroit-style pizza in an old Taco Bell. That alone sets the tone. They do offer round pizzas too, but honestly... why would you betray the rectangle. The place is pure 90s nostalgia. Free video games, throwback vibes, zero shame about leaning into it. Potato wedges were the length of my phone. Not fully cooked, but somehow still really damn good, which feels on brand here. The pizza though? Genuinely amazing. Crispy edges, great flavor, and absolutely worth it. Prices are reasonable, which feels suspicious in 2026. Service deserves its own mention. The employees were great. They answered all our questions and were genuinely excited to help us figure out what to order, which is always a win. They love Detroit and they make sure you know it. Superman ice cream. Sodas, chips, and fudge all sourced from Detroit. No subtlety, just full commitment to the theme. One note. There is an odd, intense devotion to pickles happening. It gave me the heebie-jeebies, but I chose peace and will pretend I never witnessed that level of pickle loyalty. Would I go back? Absolutely. I was curious to try a Detroit style pizza so I went with a pepper and sausage slice. The crust is crunchy and the sweet pepper is a great touch. It could use a lot more sauce and cheese to make the pizza less bready. There is a really nice selection of beer as well. read more
Came cause a friend wanted this for his birthday dinner and I now understand why. If you like Detroit-style pizza, then this place is a must. The building is a previous taco bell and I love that they didn't really change the inside. We easily fit our group of 7 inside, the workers were nice, and the pizzas came out quick. With 7 of us, we got to try a few (check the pictures) and I can confidently say I liked them all. The pizza options are fun and there's something for everyone. We liked it some much we got it delivered again a few days later. Will for sure be in my pizza rotation from now on! read more

Stopped by Angry Pete's after work to grab a beer and hang out while waiting for my pizza, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is a whole vibe--fun, welcoming, and clean from the parking lot to the restrooms. The cashier was super attentive and genuinely hospitable. I ordered the Angry Hawaiian, the CranBarry Sanders Pizza, and an Invita Mexican Lager. My total came to $52, which is on the higher side, but each pizza easily feeds two people and is absolutely worth it. The beer was cold and nicely carbonated. The Angry Hawaiian had the perfect balance of pineapple, ham, and jalapeños. The CranBarry Sanders Pizza was a creative mix of turkey, cranberries, gravy, and (I think) squash--surprisingly delicious. I'd 100% recommend Angry Pete's and will definitely be back. read more
It's definitely creative pizza but I wouldn't say it's amazing. At $6 a slice for the chicken parm and Nashville hot chicken slices I expected homemade chicken not just cut up breaded chicken from the frozen food aisle. The tomato sauce and cheese were good and it wasn't soggy. The smash burger was also decent. Nothing incredible. Overall, decent flavor. I wouldn't be a regular but I might come back just because it's a unique place being inside of an old Taco Bell. Food came out quick and the workers were all very friendly. Beer was nice and cold, should have gotten the pizza I know maybe next time. The wings? I'll have to swing back. They tasted a bit undercooked - see photos. Angry Pete's is in an old Taco Bell location. Motif is early 1990's TB. He's kept it intact and it is truly a throwback. Pizza is true Detroit-style. If you haven't experienced this preparation, it isn't New York or Chicago. It's cheese to the crust, in a square, sauce on top of the cheese, raised airy crust. Pete nails it. Lots of inspired choices. He also has Detroit style coney dogs and Faygo. Omage to Motown. Great beer selection too. Clean, unique, delectable. Shout out to the iconic Detroit sports paraphernalia.
