I like this place...not sure why i took me so long to try it. It was packed on a 3 pm on a Saturday. Seating can be challenging. You have to hover over tables that are finishing up so you can grab it the moment people leave. The crowd is a good sign...the restaurant is organized well....order at the counter and then they will call out the number as it's prepared. We tried the following: Dahi puri - i initially had pani puri craving but i settled on a dahi puri which didn't disappoint with the tart/savory flavors. Pav Bhaji (aka. Indian sloppy joe) - pretty good...the special bread is toasted just right with butter. Paneer masala dosa - never had paneer on dosa but hey anything goes with dosa. The chutney and the sambar could be better but the dosa was fresh and the potato masala was seasoned well and delectable with plenty of cilantro. read more

*Writing this review after multiple visits* So this had been our go to place for a while now. We used to stop by everytime we were on Devon street for groceries. We have tried a lot of dishes on the menu. Yesterday when we stopped by, my husband and I ordered pav bhaji, bhelpuri and idli . Pav bhaji and bhelpuri tasted fine and even idly( not a big fan of their sambar) , I felt the quantity has been reduced from when we started going there. I love the restaurants on Devon Avenue and as a vegetarian I eat there often. Today we ordered a delivery of: Daal-Gujarati Palak Paneer Chana Masala Daal-Gujarati - I always love their Daal-Gujarati, but today it was so spicy it wasn't edible. I found many many chilis in my bowl. Definitely different than how they usually do it, which just has bold flavor and a little kick to it. Palak Paneer - They totally FORGOT TO SEND this, which is sad because it is typically very good. (The app refunded me, but that was our main course...) Chana Masala - They make a decent Chana Masala, but it is a tad on the oily side. Strangely, the rice is not included with entrees. That seems so tacky to me, as rice is pennies and everyone I know eats rice with these dishes. On the positive side, everything arrived quickly, well packaged and warm. read more

I've had a handful of Dosas in my life and the one I ordered at Annapurna, while simple, was one of the best. The inside of this establishment is long and narrow, reminiscent of a dining hall. But don't let that fool you; the food packs a flavorful punch. We ordered a masala dosa and Samosa chaat. If you are new to south Asian cuisine I would highly recommend these two items. The menu is very reasonably priced as well. Dosa is a savory crepe filled with spicy potatoes and samosa chaat is a deep fried potatoe and spicy packed dough topped with yogurt, chick peas, and vegetable gravy. Most importantly the food; the dosa was made FRESH. You can really tell. My samosa chaat came out quickly and was a great appetizer to the main food. And the dosa. The lightly stove fried batter was reminiscent of a French crepe while maintaining heat and a crispy texture. The paired potato filling was flavorful and not too oily or spicy. In addition the sambar and paired dhai was superb. The dish took a bit of time to come out (~5-10 mins with no rush) but it was prepared fresh and you could really tell. I can only say good things about the establishment. I highly highly recommend this place to anyone who is vegetarian or vegan! read more

I think the dal was the best and the okra and eggplant could have been more flavorful. It was a little oily too. BUT it was heart and filling and really hit the spot. I am a regular at annapurna and I used to love this place but not anymore. Their prices have changed and its wayyyyyy too high from what it was earlier. The food is like very home style and the charges are more like a fast food chain with restaurant style variety. Also, the lady who is at the counter is extremelyyyyyyyy rude. She never ever smiles or greets and whenever you ask her something be ready to get a rude response. When you call and confirm till what time they take orders, she will always tell you a different time, sometimes it is 9 PM or 9:15 or 9:30. I guess it depends on her mood. I went in on a weekday for lunch. It wasn't too crowded. Overall: a lovely meal. The atmosphere is definitely casual and chill with 90's Bollywood movies playing in the background. It definitely gives me bakery cafe vibes. When you walk in, go all the way to the back to order first. Like most bakeries, you can sit where ever you want and wait for them to call your number at the counter. Ok, if I'm going to an Indian restaurant, I always have to go for a lassi -whether it be savory or sweet. It's practically tradition at this point. So, it would be a crime if I didn't order one this time...as I thought to justify myself. ^-^ I ordered the mango lassi. It was really smooth and fresh; there was a perfect amount of mango pulp. As for the meal, we ordered the Gujarati thali because we wanted to try a bit of everything. Additionally, a vegetable platter which allows you to choose any two vegetable dishes (chana masala - chickpeas and baingan bharta - eggplant). We shared 6 pieces of roti that came with the two meal sets. Let me tell you, among the three of us, we were absolutely stuffed - so the portions are quite generous. This place serves solely vegetarian and vegan food, so definitely a lot of options and definitely a must try for vegetarians. Both dishes were great and flavorful. Stopped in for some Indian street food. My friend had told me it was her new favorite spot for street food on Devon. It was pretty on par with some of the stuff she would get in India. That was high praise so, how could I say no? The food: Khaman - delicious, it looks like corn bread or cake but is light and savory...addictingly delicious Behl Puri - this was also very good. I personally would've like more crunchies (and less onions and tomatoes - but that's a personal preference...or maybe diced a little smaller) Karapow (not sure of the real name, but that's my phonetic for it) - this was awesome, they used a nice light moist bun that didn't have its own flavor so you got to really enjoy the potato/veggie patty inside. They also have a ton of snacks you can buy that are already made. As well as refrigerated sweet treats. So many more things to try. It's a nice big space. TLDR: totally worth a stop in for some delicious Indian street food. I'm sure anything you try will be amazing. They also have ice cream, which I heard was awesome. read more

This review is based on the service only because we didn't get to the point of eating here; we arrived at the restaurant at 11am, which is the opening time listed online, only to be told by the manager that she was not taking orders until 11:30 am. She went on to tell us that the "online" timings couldn't be trusted and rolled her eyes at us. The open sign was on and the door was open but she was turning back customers. A strange experience. I will preface this by saying the food is really good. I shared several dishes with my wife, no complaints. The problem is their customer service should embarrass the owners of this restaurant. They forgot an item with my order which was really no big deal, I just wanted it refunded. I called to speak to someone and I would get 4 words in and she would disappear doing something else for a good 30 seconds to a minute. It was highly problematic because I could not clarify anything and there was an obvious language barrier. I tried to be patient but she disappeared at any follow up. Finally she goes, "We can't do anything, call grubhub and they will refund you? Now my expectations are not that great, it was an impulse desert anyway but excuse me? That is just obnoxious. When I reached out to grubhub they immediately refunded the money but I had them reach out to them to find out what is happening because the service is so poor. Well apparently they tried to tell me that the item was not paid for. It was a poor excuse and an outright lie. I have multiple emails and the ticket from my order showing it listed. They are located on Devon so luckily there are many other amazing Indian restaurants to choose from. Never again read more

I checked out this place early this year with my bro in law, when we were in Devon Avenue specifically to try out Indian specialities. We luckily got there for our dinner after tasting some chat items in other shops. We ordered the Gujarati special Thali meals which was pretty cheap for a platter for less than $10. The host informed upfront that it would take at least 10 minutes as they prepare the puris and chapathis fresh for the plate. The restaurant wasn't surprisingly much crowded and it took the same promised time to get the food on our table. The first look of it, we couldn't wait putting that into our mouths. The puris were hot, right out of the stove. The food tasted so authentically Gujarati and the quantity was more than adequate for a dinner. So this place used to be our favorite but we never had worst Indian food than here. My mother and I went here for Mother's Day lunch and ordered dahi papdi, the papdi was so hard and dahi was literally liquid water with flavors. Then I ordered a masala soda and it was literally just SALT. They did replace it for me but then we ordered tikki and it was plain boiled allu with nothing else. No salt no pepper nothing. I'm pretty sure i'm gonna spell all of these wrong but: the pani puri and the aloo chaat were DELICIOUS! the crisps in the pani puri were fried nice and crunchy in ghee, which held up to the sauces very well. We ordered some potato samosas as well, but i wouldn't say they were amazing. definitely a crowd pleaser though. Annapurna is back on my good side. I remember back in the day (probably like 20 years ago) this was the go to snack shop on Devon. I remember my parents taking me there many times. Over time, unfortunately, I remember the place just deteriorated in terms of up-keep and quality. I had been there a couple of times when I just felt like it was filthy. Plus, other great options were springing up all around. Well, the other day we went to Devon and most of the other places were closed. The place we usually go actually moved their closing time up to 7pm, which is strange. Well anyway, so I had heard that Annapurna had remodeled so I figured I'd give it another shot. I'm happy I did. So with the granite tables, floors, etc. the interior was definitely upgraded. It's funny, but I don't know why casual fast food places on Devon think granite is appropriate for their decor. Have you ever seen a McDonald's with granite tables? At least never in the US. Anyway, that's an aside. It's just weird, because even with these upgrades, you can see how the attitude of cleanliness of this place hadn't changed. Tables that had been used were left uncleaned and there was garbage on the floors. Well, I won't be long before this place will become the dump that it was once again. Hmmm... this review is starting to sound more negative than I intended. I guess the stars still represent. Well, the reason for my good rating was the value for the food. We got chole bhature for like $3.99?! Crazy... and that includes two huge bhaturas, chole, chopped onions, pickled peppers, mango achar, and even some suji halwa. That's outstanding. Plus, when the chole ran out before the bhature, they willingly gave us more chole. That's pretty cool. Not only was this a great deal, but the taste was awesome. Very Punjabi flavor, which was impressive given that it's a Gujrati-run shop. The bhel puri and dahi puri were good. Not the best on Devon, but they were pretty good. Well, so Annapurna is back on my list of chaat shops on Devon. Now, if they could only remember to sweep floors and clean tables more regularly. read more

They have the best chats around! The spices are bold and flavorful and their parathas leave you wanting more and more.. there chutneys have a blend or old meets new blend, to die for!!! There prices are the best! Generous portions and excellent customer service. I'm too in love with this place already.. only downside is the parking, which I had to circle the block multiple times and found a park on a side street. It it's not their fault as Devon is one of the busiest streets on the north side. If you are a vegetarian and love Indian food, take a trip to Annapurna. You'll be glad you did!!! Relaxed and casual, this place serves excellent food for a great price. First off, Annapurna is entirely vegetarian. I got a full plate with three vegetable dishes, rice and naan for $6.99! My favorite dish was the chana masala - probably the best I've ever had, followed by the palak paneer. The vegetables were on the spicier side, so order a lassi if you're used to milder dishes. We ended things with gulab jamun and a chai. I wasn't a huge fan of the chai but loved the dessert. Overall, the food was fantastic and we had a great experience. Cost is so effective .. There is no sitting or waiter service but if you are prepared to go and pick up -this is the place to be. I had been there on October 30th October 31st and November 5th 2015 I really like the way they do... Everything is Self Service. They call and you need to pick up .. Some days on weekends it is really hard to find a place. they make real good food. They have a person later you can leave your plate there... One young guy comes and picks up. Growing up we would always visit this place when my parents used to drag us to Devon. I tried this place recently and what a disappointment. Started with the masala papad which was basically previously fried papad that was doused an overbearing amount of spices. (Was like eating powder). Followed up by some bland Samosas. The Bhel Puri was probably the only good item, it's spicy so be careful. The masala dosa was terrible, no flavor whatsoever and the sambar was the same. For the prices you charge and the quality you promise this is definitely not the same restaurant. There are better options that I won't mention by name but it's down the street across the fruit market. Really the best thing was the overpriced thumsup. In this time of Covid you would expect a establishment with such a popular name for so long to actually provide quality food. read more

After a long day at Devon avenue, I decided to pick up food for dinner. I wanted to eat a good vegetarian meal and this restaurant had decent reviews, hence ordered through Yelp. First of all, the prices are pretty reasonable. I got a lot of items in 30 bucks. I ordered dabeli, samosa, cutlet, dal makhni, malai kofta, roti, chhole bhature and pav bhaji. Samosa- tasted fine, filling tasted good but the pastry was not crispy. Cutlet- these were aloo bonda instead of cutlet, I did not like them Dabeli- my dabeli had just two peanuts, very less chutney and too much onion, not good Dal makhni- it tasted like simple homemade dal but nothing like dal makhni. Still, tasted fine for homemade version Malai kofta- again not close to malai kofta you get in restaurants back in India but tasted fine Roti- soft and good Chhole bhature- tasted just ok nothing like you get back in Delhi For me, the food reminded me of an average home style cooking. read more
