Annapurna is serving Ayurvedic, plant based cuisine with a beautiful reminder that food can be both indulgent and nourishing. We often forget how powerful food as medicine can be, and this place brings that philosophy to life without sacrificing flavor. The cardamom blueberry pancakes were DELISH and the kitchari was seriously comforting and flavorful. I was so excited to come to Annapurna's because I love Ayurvedic food and innovative food and was looking forward to sharing a wholesome, nutritious meal with friends. We came around 3:30pm so we could catch the masala chai happy hour. I love masala chai and rarely have the chance to get freshly made dairy-free chai. I was disappointed basically from the first moment after walking inside. The server greeted us by announcing, "We are out of vegetables today." I didn't know how this was possible; eventually, she explained that they had run out of the "veggies of the day" that come with certain dishes such as the yogi plate; they were still able to provide vegetables in other dishes like the kitchari. But I was shocked, since I love vegetables, and their veggies of the day are so prominently advertised. I asked if the other location had vegetables available today. The server was unable to tell me. We decided to place our order anyway. I had some questions about the baked goods, since I rarely get the chance to have desserts that are vegan and seed oil-free. I was curious if any of the baked goods was entirely oil-free or at least free of coconut oil. The server seemed very unmotivated to help me figure this out. When I asked about ingredients, she just repeatedly pointed me to the labels on the cookies that denoted the type of sugar each one contained as well as certain allergens, but did not have full ingredient lists. I asked if the chef or manager might be available to clarify certain ingredients, only to be told that "the chef usually only works in the mornings." I was at a loss, and eventually, with some obvious reluctance, the server went into the kitchen to ask one of the cooks about the ingredient lists. The server returned saying "Yes, the majority of the items have coconut oil." Ummmm the majority? Which ones, exactly? At this point, I gave up and just did not order dessert. I tried to order an iced chai which they were out of. I ended up getting a hot chai as well as kitchari and dal. The chai was pretty average. It wasn't particular spicy nor particularly hot. The kitchari and dal were actually incredibly delicious. It's rare to find a restaurant that doesn't use excessive salt; these dishes were perfectly seasoned with warm, nourishing spices and very little (if any?) salt. Even the fact that they were served basically lukewarm didn't detract from how much I enjoyed them. This place seems truly special and I don't know if my experience was an exception. Annapurna's food is my kind of food! It's healthy, tasty, and cruelty free. We visited here after a long drive down from Denver, and we were famished. The only problem here is that there were too many delicious choices! I chose the yogi bowl with spiced potatoes and chana masala. My husband chose the "green plate" with stuffed poblano peppers. While my son had the cauliflower tacos with black beans. We all enjoyed our meals and left the restaurant feeling full and happy. To those who complain that the food is "bland", I totally disagree. Try their sauces, my favorite was the date chutney. The service was also friendly and fast. I haven't been to Annapurna's for years, and finally returned yesterday for a nice lunch. I was accompanied by a vegan who absolutely love this spot, and I am so glad we returned to I could reignite my love for it! Their menu was loaded with great options making it hard for me to choose what to get. Ultimately, I went with a dosa and samosa (which sounds a lot like the song doses and mimosas). I ordered a samosa with coconut and date tamarind chutneys and a cup of carrot ginger soup. I received neither chutney, and the samosa was barely cooked (see photo). The soup was okay but lukewarm. If the world had more Annapurna's it would be a better place. We found street parking easily and ordered at the counter. After getting our number, we sat down and waited for dinner. Every single thing we ordered was absolutely delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff was warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The dessert options seemed endless, and there were so many kinds of teas to choose from. It was so exciting to see such a wide variety of vegan options for once! The food is prepared with Ayurveda in mind, and the menu thoughtfully notes which dosha or energy each dish supports. I ordered the kitchari with lime, which I've had many times before elsewhere, but never like this. It was bursting with flavor, beautifully balanced, and incredibly fresh. I could honestly eat it every day. I also tried the mango lassi and a slice of pumpkin cheesecake. Both were delicious, and the cheesecake in particular had a wonderful texture and great flavor. The café is located next to a yoga studio that hosts Kirtan, and just a block away is the Peace and Justice Center. It's such a cool, vibrant area that's definitely worth exploring during the day. The food is very good, the menu has varied choices and shows creativity towards vegan foods. I am particularly fond of the almond chocolate pie, and the cookies with jam. He forgot to bring us eating utensils and water. We love visiting this restaurant and were looking forward to eat organic ayuverdic vegan food while traveling through interstate hwy 40. We have visited the one in Santa Fe, NM but not the one in Albuquerque yet. Meals were delicious and service was friendly and helpful. I chose the vegan sampler which includes sambhar, vada, coconut chutney, and mini dosa. Hubby chose the vegan thali. Delicious and satisfying! I purchased desserts to go: pecan pie and coconut pie. Glad to try Annapurna at Central/Univ location (after having been to 4th St NW St location previously). I honestly liked the 4th St NW location a bit more as I enjoyed a chanting music in the background and general larger space for diners (vs this place is slightly more crunched together). Plus, at 4th St NW location, it's much easier to find a parking spot in a large parking lot vs. on a street/paid area around this location. Foodwise, I tried Chipati Rolls with Veggies 1 (a mix of butternut squash...Thai smething...) and thought it was ok. It was slightly bland..but the food tasted fresh and healthy as usual. I just thought I would appreciate a little more spice than a bland wrap. My friend's dish looked just ok. He ordered a grilled cheese with fries..but I thought it looked slightly burnt/too dark (esp the fries). Overall, a good place to have vegetarian/vegan food...but perhaps...I would try other dishes on their menu where the food isn't super Americanized and maybe not too bland. read more

We waited for someone to check back with us to see how our food was. No one did, so my friend went to the counter and asked the woman to come over and take a look at our food. She did. This is the best place to get vegetarian comfort food I have tried in Albuquerque. My favorite English teacher from UNM took everyone from our literature class to eat here for lunch one afternoon. She had our food ordered in advance, so our service was really quick. We had a great time setting out on their patio and visiting. I believe there were around 15 of us there. Now about the Kitchari we ate! It's a dish of basmati rice, yellow mung beans, veggies, and spices. They brought out a dish that had limes, shredded coconut, cilantro, and ghee to pick and choose to add to your Kitchari. I put some of all it in. I can't even tell you how amazing this stuff was. My teacher said it's eaten a lot for breakfast in different countries. Well, I don't know where I have been all my life for breakfast, but I have been missing out for sure. I either have to learn to make this, or I will need to buy it in bulk to keep in my fridge to heat up for breakfast because I need this in my life. It was healthy and delicious. They brought us out Lavender Mint and Lemon Ginger drinks which were both light and refreshing. While we were eating the owner came out to check on us and she was really nice. My teacher had breast cancer a few years back and told us that the owner of this restaurant use to bring her food every week while she was going through her treatments. I had never eaten at a vegetarian restaurant before and wasn't sure I'd even know what to order. This random day, I ordered a spinach pizza. It was perhaps the most delicious thing I've ever eaten, so much so I think about it still. I remember the atmosphere was pleasant and welcoming.
