I really didn't think anything special of this place....but I am becomeing a bit of a pizza snob after eating Lombardi's, John's and Grimaldi's. The meatballs are meatballs and the pizza was pizza. I thought it was a bit to thick for coal oven pizza. Little salty too. Decor is interesting since it is a wide open space. Really cool photos all over...... Holy moly - I don't know how many times I passed this restaurant to go to Target and while I passed by I smell the delicious aroma of Italian seasons in the air but not today. Me and my hubby wanted to try out Anthony's and we are so happy. The service (Alyssa) is adorable and super kind. First timers at Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza. We got lucky and got there before loads of families and teams got there for some fundraiser type of event. Our waitress was nice and friendly, but got a little bit inundated with the large groups. Started with small meatball app with ricotta cheese. That wasn't bad. Then we had a small pizza with half Broccoli Rabe and Sausage and the other half Meatball and Ricotta. We also ordered a Traditional Calzone. Surprisingly the pizza with the broccoli rabe was my favorite. The calzone was nice and tasty too. The crust on the pizza and the calzone were so nice thin and crispy just the way I like it. I usually love coming to Anthony's and always look forward to their meatballs and chicken parmesan, but yesterday I was very let down when I picked up my order. Here is what I picked up: 1. Chicken parmesan w/ roasted potatoes 2. Eggplant parmesan 3. Two meatballs When I got home, I had taken the boxes out of the bag and found out that the eggplant parmesan was half the size I normally get. The meatballs had little to no sauce, which was not just really disappointing, but not usual of them. At this point I was let down, but the thing that really disappointed me was the chicken parmesan. As soon as I started eating the chicken, I noticed it was way chewier and a lot more rubbery. I don't know if it was overcooked, but inside it was white and it looked pretty normal from the outside as well. But this really let me down since Anthony's was my favorite pizza/Italian chain in my area. I hope this gets resolved soon so I don't have this problem again. read more

Surprised I never tried this place sooner but I finally managed to make my way here and I'm really glad I did. I really enjoyed the pizza. Lots of crunch to the crust but not the point of being burn. My sister-in-law does not have a Yelp account, so she is using mine now to tell it in her own words here: " Tonight, October 2, 2021, my daughter and I went to Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza in Edison. We are long time good customers, but after today, we will NEVER come back again... Everything seemed okay at first. We were seated and had ordered our food. I sat facing my teenaged daughter when I saw a young waiter behind her carrying an INSANE amount of dishes and filled glasses piled high on a single plate. He had no tray and this was an accident going to happen. I opened my mouth to tell him that he had too many things in his arms when the pile he was carrying exploded everywhere. Glasses and plates shot out hitting my daughter in the head and leaving her soaking wet and filthy. The waiter said he was sorry and ran away. Guests began handing me napkins to help my daughter. I was more concerned that she was hurt. The waiter came back with a tiny dish rag for this entire mess. The owner gave no apology for this and simply said to this idiot waiter "Move them to another table." A male guest look appalled and asked what is wrong with this waiter? My daughter stood drenched and speechless. How the HECK was she expected to eat like this??? We both knew that we had to leave this awful restaurant immediately. I took her arm and ushered her out. A coal fired oven pizza franchise across the US, I opted to finally try the chain out. My friends and I stopped by for an early dinner and we were seated quickly. The staff was friendly, welcoming and gave a few suggestions from the menu, which is always a plus when visiting a restaurant a first time. I was intrigued by their roasted cauliflower pizza, however I ended up ordering a small 12" personal Eggplant Marino Pizza. The server recommended this over the cauliflower. The menu is not large so not too difficult making a decision here. The pizza is prepared rather quickly and in a short while, a piping hot pie was sitting in front of me to be consumed. The crust was nicely prepared and there was plenty of eggplant on it. Its a good option for the coal oven pizzeria fanbase when local or specialty pizzerias aren't close. The prices are decent for the food portions and the service at this location was attentive, quick and hospitable. read more

Wanna start this review by saying I've been a customer here for a long time. Tonight, was a game changer. Exceptional. 5 stars. Party of 20 for an 85th Birthday and John was on point. Kid ran from the time we came in til we left 4 hours later. While serving other tables. Place was packed. The food was as consistent tonight as it's always been. Delicious, hot and timely. Never an empty drink on the table. Service, Food and Atmosphere were impeccable. John raised the bar and set the standard for customer service and was extremely personable. The leader of the team was Christian. She was available for anything as busy as they place was. The bartender, Alissa gets involved. She's warm and professional and has excellent people skills. This is a good pizza place to sit down for dinner and have some drinks. They have a full bar and great rotating beers on draft also. I had a travelers pineapple shandy and it was delicious! Their pizzas are unique; Philly cheesesteak and broccoli rabe sausage are some of the options. My favorite is the roasted cauliflower pizza. The crust is very thin and soft but some people complain it gets too burnt sometimes. I've never had that issue before. You can't order individual slices. You can order a personal size pizza, small or large. We usually get a large pizza to share and do half and half style pizzas. I come to Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza in Edison pretty often and once again they knocked it out of the park with their service and food quality. I came here after a little league game with my father and my son who was in his baseball uniform. I wish I can remember our server's name. She was attentive and friendly. I had an issue with my beer and she rectified the problem promptly. The food was excellent. We had a pepperoni/ meatballs pie as well as chicken wings. The wings were amazing and the pizza is by far one of the best in the area. The manager (Christian Colon) came to our table and was super nice. She offered my son's little league team free pies for their next home game. We can't thank her enough for her kind gesture. As I said before I come here often and never had an issue with service or the food. Christian and her staff are doing a great job. I highly recommend Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza They have a bar you can sit and have a few drinks at as well as a large dining area. When you put low quality ingredients into a coal oven, you still get a low quality pizza.. No matter what fuel you use! Anthony's Coal Fired is a true tale of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.. After years of enjoying all of the coal oven pizza that NYC has to offer, we were very excited that we had a coal fired pizzeria right in our backyard! We jumped to try Anthony's only to find severe disappointment. The Good: The first thing that I did when we had arrived at Anthony's was admire the warm, 'Italian family style' dinning atmosphere and nice bar area to the side. It was lively without being 'loud' and the wait staff was pleasant and helpful. The Bad: I was acutely interested in what type of technology and personnel was going to be producing my dinner: Straight towards the back was the 'coal ovens' (aka the 'Pizza Incinerator' as you will read about later) and in front of the ovens is what I will call 'Pizza Assembly Line' that would make Henry Ford proud. So the ovens are fueled with Charcoal at Anthony's.. The kind you would use your in backyard, like Kingsford. Not 'real' anthracite coal. Secondly, The CHARcoals were in the same chamber as the food..I always have seen coal ovens with the indirect 'firebox' low and offset to the side. Never with the charcoal and food together... The 'pizza assembly line' (think chipotle) at Anthony's was obviously designed to create many pizza's fast and systematically. There didn't seem to be any pizzaiolo (or pizzaiola, ladies) for quality control or oversight. Alas, I was not ready to pre-judge before my first bite and kept an open mind about Anthony's.. The Ugly: Years back, I was one of those who thought that even a bad pizza was still pretty good. This was bad pizza. Crust: It was absolutely obvious that the chef staff at Anthony's has had little to no training on the dough making or baking. I do not believe that any consideration was given to dough hydration, oven temp or timing. I think that our pizza was extracted from the 'Anthony's Pizza Incinerator', 'when it looked brown enough', and boy it was brown. The pizza that was presented to us was severely overdone. I do enjoy a properly char-spotted crust. This pizza was totally obliterated with heat, and then left in another couple of minutes longer just to make sure... Sauce and Toppings: The sauce and toppings that were laid by the 'Pizza Assembly Line' were no match for 'Anthony's 'Pizza Incinerator'. What traces of tomato and cheese that were once placed on the pie had been melded to a tasteless orange paste or otherwise evaporated by the 'Pizza Incinerator'. It was that bad. Our burnt 'shards' of smokey tasteless dry pizza where served with a big nasty portion of being duped again by another chain food establishment's marketing attempt at 'authenticity'. Don't be fooled with Anthony's 'Coal Oven' marketing, there are great pizza places in the area that use solid fuel ovens. If you are looking for a brick fired pizzeria in thee Edison area, skip Anthony's Coal and head over to Antonio's Brick Oven Pizza in Metuchen. -James read more

Nestled in across from the Menlo park mall, Anthony's has a long wood bar and tables quite a few tables they can seat over 60 in this open square dining room, high ceilings. A prolific draft collection including $2 peroni on football Sundays. The menu is fairly small with a clear pizza focus. There is an absolutely magnificent collection of old Hollywood & sports memorabilia pictures scattered throughout the entire bar. I spent at least 15 minutes looking & walking around and looking some more. Wonderfully enough, they have a picture of a Hollywood starlet sitting next to Marilyn Monroe with her massive breasts exposed as the Hollywood starlet looks on just above the urinal. Lol loved it. Large pie with caramelized onions and mushrooms with 3 cokes and salad. Liked the pie quite a bit albeit not enough sauce and too thick, but the crispy crust rocks as does the flavor. Huge salad very fresh and perfect house Italian dressing. I enjoyed the salad at $10 and $21 for the pizza ($2.75 per 16 oz. bottled soda ouch), but it's too much $ for NJ suburbia for basically pizza. Although the pizza is decent, I will not be bringing my work colleagues to this place in future after a recent incident. A Norwegian colleague and I went to Anthony's for drinks and pizza. He is 33 and looks it. He ordered a beer and was asked for ID. Though he presented valid EU identification with his birthday and photo clearly marked, he was denied drinks causing a minor embarrassment to me.
