Get the spicy goat stew!!! That is all. Jk. You know how sometimes you eat something so good you're still thinking about it hours, or even days later? That's the goat stew. Do yourself a favor and get this. It's savory, a little spicy, with umami, and served in a hot pot to make it the ultimate comfort food - even in the middle of summer. We originally came here looking for naengmyun. And we got it (chik naengmyun). It was good, but a bit too vinegary for my taste. Glad I didn't order my own bowl as my individual entree as it was a large portion and the goat stew was more my jam. The seafood pancake was good, but a little undercooked and suuuuuper greasy on the bottom. Had to dab it with napkins. But, score for me as it didn't have any shrimp. No worrying about hives! Overall it was very good. Even better as a leftover! The banchan was good. The homemade kimchi, radish kimchi, and potato strips were my personal faves, but honestly they were all good. Just wish they offered fried corvina too. The service was super friendly and mostly good. They speak decent enough English for us to communicate with them. That said, they seemed short staffed so the poor women were running around, huffing and puffing...and forgot to put in our order. As it was,we arrived at 8ish so we didn't even have a full hour. This is a very small restaurant but it was a full house when my mom and I went for a week night dinner. We ordered the stir fried squid noodles, devoured them, and then ordered some dolsot bibibap. All of the food was to die for and we asked if they sold their banchan (they don't). The menu is very simple/there's only the most basic English descriptions and the staff doesn't speak a lot of English but were so lovely. It's amazing and I'll definitely come back. read more

Finding A-Bum was like fate. It was hard to meet my fate, but fate nonetheless. I found this place through Yelp while looking for somewhere near me that has Soon Dae, but it's listed as Abeom. I was excited that there was a Soon Dae spot near me, and called the troops (aka: the significant other) to come with me to try this place. She is as willing as I am to try something new, and if I would have left without her, I would have heard it. I waited the necessary amount of time for her to get ready, and we began our journey to this place. I say journey, because it was a journey. It sucked. The area is hard enough to understand as it is. I'm not complaining, but some of the signs are deterrents for some folks, because they're impossible to read for the average non-Korean speaking individual. So we proceeded around the area slowly, looking at every sign as closely as possible. The Tom Tom told us to make a turn into a little shopping center, and we crept through the parking lot looking for Abeom. We couldn't find it! There was an A-Bum, but I thought to myself, "that can't be it". We left, and drove around some more, only to come back later, realizing that this, in fact, was the place we were supposed to be. DRAT! What a waste of 20 minutes. Oh well. Que sera sera. We entered, and were greeted by a bunch of confused Korean patron looks. It seemed that they weren't expecting to see someone who looks Mexican coming in for a nice little meal. This is where that stopped though. They went back to eating as quickly as when they stopped to look at us. We were seated by the server (owner?), and she gave us our menus. We ordered Soon Dae, Kim Chi fried rice, Soon Du Bu (tofu soup), and their spicy goat stew. They brought out the pre-dinner treats, which is custom for OG Korean restaurants, and they were all appetizing in their own way. They had a nice selection of items, such as Kim Chi, Jap Chae, etc. The Soon Dae was very tasty. This has become my spot for Soon Dae. The flavor of the main ingredient is not overpowering, and the sausage has a peppery hint. The Kim Chi fried rice has become my significant other's favorite. They mix bulgogi with their rice, which creates a blend of flavors which can't be rivaled. The combination of bulgogi, and Kim Chi gives the dish a sweet and spicy taste. It's very addictive. The Soon Do Bu wasn't our favorite. The goat stew seems to be the favorite of the locals. It had a very strong goat flavor, and was somewhat spicy. I liked it, but my significant other wasn't a fan. For a place that has great, authentic food, this is the place (in the area) to go to. The service is excellent. It's a small place, but it has an OG feel to it. read more

The restaurant is fairly small and not easy to notice from far away, but their food is really really good. I had the galbi tang, octopus bibimbap and tofu soup. The galbi tang was surprisingly amazing. The ribs are tender. Broth is rich and flavorful. I didn't taste any MSG too so it's a good thing. Usually most Korean food I tried has lots of sugar but this place is different. Food is not too sweet. The server (or maybe owner) speaks little English, but she's really nice. I came in before the restaurant was packed so my food didn't take too long, but I guess you might have to wait a little longer if you came in when the it is busy. The starters are full of flavor and really seem tastier than most places!! Had the Korean pork sausage soup which was really tasty!! Different flavor than I have had!! The galbi tang was phenomenal!! It was seriously really really good!! Rivals with the most famous galbi tang place...and then had the Korean spicy goat soup...really rich in flavor and amazing!! Came here while visiting around LA (our hotel was in West Covina) for some nearby authentic Korean food. My family came here twice in the 4 days we were staying in the area, it was so good. The first time I felt pretty bad because we had just driven in from SF and we got to the restaurant at 9:20 when it closed at 10. The service was still attentive and courteous, so props to them for that! Much appreciated! Food things: - They must make their banchan fresh every morning, because they were different the 2 times we went! Their kimchi was fantastic, as was their kkakdugi, and I am also a huge fan of mung bean sprouts, which they did a great job of. The banchan that changed were also all great! - Their galbi tang (stew) had great flavor in the soup but the meat was a little tough for me. - Dduk mandu gook was amazing, huge, obviously homemade dumplings and perfect dduk (rice cake) consistency. - My mom really enjoyed her cold kong gooksu (bean/nut noodles) dish. - My dad really enjoyed his soondae gook too! Amazing, clean flavors in the soup and really solid soondae. - If you're feeling like meat, their bo-ssam is amazingly fresh and huge. Definitely share with the table! Removing a star, finally got to eat at the restaurant again after the second try (last time, they closed more than an hour early than the posted operational hours). Got the usual favorite, goat soup, the taste was fantastic as always. However, very disappointed they skimmed down on serving size of the soup and the number of size dishes. The soup was only 2/3 full and there was less meat than before, see pictures. Paying almost $15 for a soup, I expected a little more, or at least maintain the same standard as pre-COVID time. As you see in the picture, the soup looks like it was eaten a little, but I didn't touch it yet. The spoon was placed in the soup bowl when served to our table for whatever reason and odd. I love eating at Ap Gu Jung! Their nakji churpahn (spicy pan fried is my ultimate favorite and a must have whenever I go! I think it feeds 3-4 people. You get even more food if you ask for the fried rice at the end of your meal! Also their seafood pancake is the best I've ever had! It's crispy on the outside and filled with lots of seafood. The bossam is yummy too! The side dishes are amazing as well. I'm basically in love with everything about Ap Gu Jung. The servers are so nice!!! The restaurant feels so homey. Sometimes they will get really packed but I'm willing to wait to eat here! When I first came to eat here, I thought it was the best hole in the wall korean restaurant I've ever found. I should've written a review sooner but I had the feeling of keeping this gem to myself. I've changed my mind since then because they really deserve all the praise for their delicious food and service. The haemul pajeon here is the best ever! You know how normally you'd get some sort of soft, floppy pancake? Not here! They make it with crispy, crunchy (potatoes?), not really sure what it was, but it was so yummy. Plenty of imitation crabmeat and some mussels scattered around. We would've been happy with this alone. But, we also ordered the nakji chulpahn - plenty of octopus, cabbage, perilla leaves, and rice cakes- in a spicy stew broth with just enough heat to keep you eating more. The octopus pieces were on the chewy side, but still good. And after you've finished, they take the pot to the back and make you the best kimchi fried rice ever to finish off your meal. Even though they are known for their soondae or soondaegook, I decided to just get other food on the menu. My choices were spicy cold noodle and stone pot spicy octopus rice. They were both pretty decent but not to the point where I would unconsciously say, "oh..wow" The ajumma who was serving was very nice. She was a sweetheart. Whether or not this is an authentic Korean food experience is something I cannot be the judge of, but what I do know is that the food and taste here of the products we had were on point. Between the banchan, bibimbap and the short rib soup the food we had was fresh and came to our table piping hot. The purple rice was a nice touch and if you let your bibimbap sit a little the rice on the bottom of the hot plate becomes crispy and adds nice flavor and texture to the dish. Overall, with so many high quality Korean restaurants in town this one is worth checking out just for the options that you won't find at other places. Will be back next time. This is may be blasphemous but I like to toss in the kimchee and spoon up the banchan red liquid into my soup. It makes it way tastier. After the soondae soup gets cold the broth congeals. Maybe from the collagen? Its a little off putting so slurp it fast. The owner is super nice. I always see her pulled up to a table having a chat with the customers. Some of the best food in SoCal can be found in hole-in-the-wall restaurants tucked inside unassuming strip malls, and this place is definitely a shining example. Their goat stew is next level - not just for goat stews but for meat stews in general. Delicious ay-eff. The thick dipping sauce then takes it to the next-next level. Was in the area late one night and had a craving for Korean food (when am I not...) and this was one of the few places nearby that was opened. Upon walking in, I was greeted and seated immediately. I ordered the red pepper octopus with noodles. The bachan was just oka and the main course itself was...not that great. It was mostly cabbage and onions than octopus and the noodles didn't really go with the mix; the sauce seems to slip off of them which made it bland and overall it felt watery. I thought the price for my meal was a little high -maybe because I didn't enjoy it- but it was definitely more than what I usually pay for. read more

We were looking forward to eating in a highly ranked Yelp Korean restaurant. what a disappointment! The Bossam ($27.99) was awful....the pork was tasteless. Additionally, we ordered Agwi jjim, a braised Monkfish Dish ($37.99) which should have been described as a "Bean Sprout" with a very small taste of Monkfish. For the prices charged, the fish portions were ridiculously small. We complained to the Manager who blamed the kitchen staff.......of course, the Manager made no adjustment to our bill. I am a Korean who is used to eating well prepared Korean food...this restaurant should not be open. It rips off its customers. Don't frequent this establishment. read more

I would drive to Ap Gu Jung from Irvine every time when craving authentic Korean food. This place offers menu beyond the regulars (tofu soup, grilled meat etc) and the taste is fresh and delicious. The goat soup, stir fry and hot pot are all worth to try. My favorites are soondae and seafood pancake. It has the best seafood pancake covered with a layer of crispy imitated crab meat presenting a unique texture and flavor. Won't be disappointed! read more

I have stopped here twice on the way home from big bear to OC to pick up my to-go orders during Covid. On my first visit, the lady was not wearing a mask. I was taken a back by it but since it was during off peak hour, I let it go. I asked if I could use the restroom, she does not answer me back but just nodded yes. After I got done, I asked if my husband could use the restroom also, she clearly showed me her dislike of the idea but rudely said ok. Today was no different, well, actually worse. As I picked up my order I asked to use the restroom she said ok and then I asked if my husband could use the restroom (mind you we both were wearing a n-95 equivalent mask) then the rude commentary started. She told me it was really dangerous for us to be going in there to use the restroom. Uhhhhhh it is not dangerous for us to go in to pay for near $100 worth of food each time but if the paying customers who live really far away have to use the restroom, it becomes dangerous? We are over here trying to support small businesses, mom and pop joints but if you make your customers to feel wrong and unwelcomed to use the restroom, we certainly would not be back covid or no covid. The food is ok at best, nothing special about it. Please note, they do not give you any ban chans with your to go either. I'm so glad I found this place by my parents house! I've been living in walnut for over 10 years and I didn't know this place til I randomly watched some bossam video and yelped it!! The shop is pretty small but very cozy. I think they can only sit less than 10 parties. I'm sorry to say this but the ladies who works there are the nicest Korean waitresses I've ever seen :) their bossam is also better than other places we've tried. the hot pot, too!!
