I normally don't go to chain restaurants when I'm out and about. I like to try local joints. But I was hungry, it was close (within walking distance) and I wanted dinner. The burger was actually really good, juicy, hot, and large. The fries were just OK. The beer selection wasn't all that local, but they did have at least one beer that was from someplace close by. I sat at the bar, and from what I could see there was almost a family vibe going on with the regulars, so that was cool. Hadn't been to Applebees in about 15 years and couldn't remember why, so we decided to give it another try. Sat down and waited... and waited in a less than half full building. It must have been the manager who finally came by to ask if we'd talked to our waiter, not yet. Ordered drinks and dinner, dinner salads with them, they arrived and I was taken aback a bit, two cups of salad dressing... It would gave been, "did you want some salad with your dressing?" Maybe others thought they were stingy with dressing in the past? Definitely not a problem anymore! It just seemed excessive and I used about half of one, blue cheese packs a lot of flavor! Dinner arrived, I had the Cajun Chicken and Shrimp... and WOW was it salty! I know a lot of Americans adore salt, I am obviously not one of them, it was too much salt and nit enough cajun seasoning. I asked my wife who had chosen Apllebees to remind me NOT to get this again in the future. She seemed to enjoy her steak. The mashed potatoes were a refreshing break and sort of cleansed the pallet. Will we go back? Alone I might say no, the cook seemed too heavy handed with salt, but they both seemed you enjoy their food, I'll just avoid anything labeled cajun as this apparently means salty rather than cajun seasoning, which I happen to adore having live in the Texas Gulf Coast near Louisiana, but then salts a lot cheaper and maybe people in Idaho tend to prefer it with more salt and less spice? read more

This was my first time at an applebees, and tbh: my last. The burgers were good (swiss mushroom) but the chicken snadwhich was unexlectedly sweet and hot/spicy. But... EVERYTHING was COVERED in pepper. The chef LOOOVEES him some pepper! I have never in my 55 years ever turned a plate back, but I had to return my chicken breast because the meat and both vegetables were covered in black pepper (I do not like black pepper). The mac-and-cheese was buried in sweet sauce from the chicken strips (couldn't taste the mac-n-cheese flavor), and .... covered in pepper. The french fries? covered in pepper. The chef has an obsession with black pepper. WTH?? The food was slow to get out to us (almost 20 min, on a very slow Sunday Afternoon), and when I had to return my meal, everyone at the table had finished their food before I got mine back, which was awkward. I decided to take half my meal home, so people didn't have to wait - and I didn't feel I had to rush - but the waitress forgot to bring my to-go box, and my son had to go request one. The food is good, not great but not bad either. I used to like to go to Applebees because the service was so slow that I could leisurely drink about 6-7 Brutus before getting served!! It didn't matter where in the country we were (except one place in Lexington S.C.) where I only had time for one brew.. I even congratulated the manager!) It is a restaurant with racist waiters. We placed an order at 8:45 PM for four cocktails during happy hour, but at 9 PM, the waiter came back to inform us that he could no longer serve them. We had already ordered our food, so we told him, "Okay, that's fine." Later, he returned with beers we hadn't ordered. When we told him they weren't ours, he asked us to leave, saying he didn't want to serve us because he couldn't understand what we were saying. He then yelled at us and kicked us out. read more

I've lived long enough to have had my share of bad steaks, and this rivals any of them. I always do a gut-check with the people I am dining with when I am thinking of the star-rating, and my husband's comment after our Applebee's meal was "this meal reminds me of why we don't come to Applebee's." So, yeah. We don't go to Applebee's because we've never really been impressed with the food. But someone gave me a gift card, and we wanted lunch out, so there we were. Before going into the restaurant, I downloaded their app to see if they had anything special on the app. Nope. No incentive for having their app so I quickly took that off my phone. My husband and I shared a combo: riblets and oriental chicken salad and boneless wings as the appetizer in the combo. The ribs were beyond charred - they were crispy, with black burnt crunchy areas. The fries were just there. The oriental salad was sort of a cross between a slaw and a salad - heavy on cabbage, the dressing was a thin cream dressing akin to coleslaw dressing - and I was expecting there to be some mandarin oranges in it, but there weren't any. The breadstick was not good (and I've never met a breadstick I didn't like); it was very herby, needed salt, and not appetizing at all. There were a couple of elderly ladies sitting next to us and the older one (I would say 80+-years-young) wanted her soup. The server told her that it would come out with her salad. She said she'd like to have it now. And he said it'll come on the plate with your salad. (And he's being completely condescending with her.) She's hungry, she needs to eat, and she's asking for her salad to come before the meal instead of having to wait for it to come on the plate with the soup. He tells her that's the way that meal works - the soup comes with the salad. Really? You mean to tell me that if you went back to the kitchen and told them that the lady at table 18 needs her salad now, they would say it's not possible because it absolutely has to go on the plate with the soup? Dumb. It was really uncomfortable to watch this little lady practically begging for her salad now but not being able to have it because of what "the process" is. So dumb. We went to applebees just to see if what people say about it being bad wasn't true. We were wrong, my steak (I asked for medium) was cooked well done, no pink in sight and tasted like chewing rubber. My boyfriends pasta had a LARGE piece of what looked like plastic wrap buried under the noodles. Also he didn't have a fork for most of the time of us sitting there. And our server still made us pay for all the food and only gave $15 discount, despite us just saying we were done and didn't want to finish our food we had only partly eaten. I was/have been a regular at the bar top for almost the last 4 years now. I am no longer interested in coming to this restaurant. The bar tender was rude to me until I started tipping better because I actually started making more money in a new position at a new job. and Its not like I ever tipped poorly before considering I have worked in the food industry myself and always have provided a fair tip of 20% or more. She used to bad mouth me to my other bar "friends" (very well still might trash talk me). A waitress who has previously been a bartender at this location (used to drink behind the bar at a different restaurant that is no longer a thing but most of the regulars know about it) has also felt the need to trash talk about me to other regulars. Speaking of the other regulars (those of which are all middle aged females) have also included themselves in talking shit over the fact that men at the bar will buy me drinks. all of which is honestly none of their business whether it's me or someone else paying for the drinks. Nothing really wrong with the service minus the occasional overcooked steak or cold shrimp. Either way coming to this Applebees no longer feels welcoming or my safe place and I sit there uncomfortably - keep in mind I told a few of the male regulars about this and the few I have talked to this about have not had an issue with me there or themselves occasionally paying for one or two of my drinks because they enjoy my company. My youngest received a coupon for a free child's meal at Applebees through the library's Kids' Summer Reading program. So, we brought him here for dinner on a Friday night. What I liked: 1. The variety of low calorie menu items. -which included low calorie cocktails! Generally, if I'm having a cocktail--calories aren't a concern. However--the guilt free margarita was nice and not too bad tasting (if a bit weak). 2. The service. The servers were prompt, courteous, and, well....just plain likable. 3. As I mentioned, my son received a coupon through the library--so I like that they support children's literacy! Yay! Go Applebees! 4. My son ate his entire chicken tender/ French fry basket with much lip smacking delight. So--score one for the kids! What wasn't quite so pleasing: 1. I ordered their Dijon chicken with grilled portobellos, peppers, and onions. It came with veggies and potatoes. It was low calorie and decent, but not great. 2. My dining companion (the adult one) ordered some sort of crispy chicken salad, which he reported was "solid" though not fabulous. 3. So, in short, the food? Meh. Not good, but not bad either. 4. And, last but certainly not least: In what world is Smirnoff top shelf vodka? (apparently: the world of Applebees) For God sakes, people, no! Absolutely not! Never, ever should "Smirnoff" and "top shelf" be uttered in the same sentence (unless the sentence is: Smirnoff belongs nowhere near the top f*cking shelf!). Okay, so I feel like it's always hit or miss with these chain restaurants. I feel like it was kind of middle of the road here tonight. The French onion soup was decent but the pepper crusted steak dish was weird. The steak was plated weird. Like they had a steak placed on top of a soggy pile of what looked like canned spinach and quinoa. The steak itself was so-so. It was essentially a cheap steak. Cook was okay, there was some fat, but overall mediocre. My husband's burger looked decent, though. Service was nice enough, it was easy to get a seat, and the food came out quickly. So if you're looking for mediocre food at an average price, this is okay. You're not going to have the best meal of your life here, but at least you don't have to cook! read more

Boise Idaho Emerald Applebees---This restaurant is the pits---yesterday was the third time I have been there (went this time because a relative wanted to go) and they have screwed up the food all three times. On top of that, the place was dirty--a dirty rag laying on one table, two used glasses on another table. This trip was bad from the beginning when they seated 5 of us at a booth (4 top) right in the path of the sun going down (irritating in the corner of the eye) not to mention I had to sit in the aisle. Could blame it on me, could blame it on the restaurant (not having proper sun shade) or on the young inexperienced hostess--- whatever it was I had to ask that we be put at tables away from the sun. When the food came the steak was not medium--it was bloody rare. The mac and cheese was dry and for $2 extra was way too small and dry. (they did bring me a new one)....overall the whole experience was not enjoyable and could have been better if seated somewhere out of the sun going down. read more

OMG, what happened to Applebee's? I haven't visit this chain for several years due to the really awful experience we had in Silverdale, WA. I took my mother-in-law to the Emerald Applebee's for a Mother's Day dinner yesterday and was so disappointed. She had the ribs, which were dry, and I had the chicken breast with shrimp which was nothing special. The mashed potatoes had to have come from a box. They were sticky! The young, blond hostess, with very large lashes, couldn't have been ruder had she tried. The sign on the door read "No Mask, No Service", but this hostess let anyone in. Our waitress had her mask under her nose, (why even bother). It was truly a nasty experience. I will never go back. read more

This is our first visit to this location. Alyse was our server. She was enthusiastic & attentive. We really lkked the way she took care of our needs as well as the patrons around us. We ordered the 2 for $25 deal with double crisp shrimp & baby back ribs as the entrees and the spinich artichoke dip for the appetizer. The dip was cheesy & flavorful, served at just the right temp to dig in! The entrees were brought timely, also not too hot. While the ribs were a bit overdone, the honey bbq sauce was flavorful with a bit of tang to it. The shrimp was yum yummy! I opted for tarter sauce over shrimp sauce. All in all, it was a fun visit. Applebee's is pretty standard everywhere you go - that's the pro/con of chains (however you want to look at it). The only real difference from location to location is the staff, and the Emerald staff is top notch! This Applebee's is close to my office, so I stop in from time to time for something different and always enjoy my experience. The staff is wonderful all-around, and you're always greeted with a smile! The food, of course, is decent and prices are fair. Good enough to keep me coming back again! read more

I used to go to Applebee's all the time, & I've never been disappointed in the food when I have gone. The only thing that I will never give them 5 stars for is every time I go they've changed the menu that gets very irritating when you go for something you really like and can't find it anymore. This time I got the grilled shrimp skewer, crispy shrimp & 6oz sirloin. Sides were broccoli & potatoes. The steak was cooked just the way I like it very flavorful the coleslaw that came with it is actually really good I was surprised, and an even bigger shocker, I am super picky on barbecue sauce I do not like 99% of them out there, but I actually liked their barbecue sauce on the shrimp. I will absolutely go back and get this again as long as it's available. if I knew this was going to be a permanent menu item I would give them 5 stars. read more

First, the service here is wonderful. The wait staff are cheerful and quick, and friendly to boot. When my friend and I came to watch the World Series they turned a TV over for just us, and didn't complain about it either. Unfortunately, the food here is either hit or miss. Don't get me wrong; their spinach artichoke dip is literally to die for. It sucks that they only serve Pepsi products, and not even Dr Pepper! But their worst offense by far is their meat. There are not words strong enough to describe the experience of their meat. The first steak I was ordered was vaguely grey in the middle; when I went back with my friend a week later she too ordered the steak, and I can only describe the interior as a threatening, pork-esque brown-grey. To no one's surprise we complained, and what did we get? Half off our appetizer and the most half-assed apology I've ever heard. So, now we go for the spinach artichoke dip, and the waiters. I would advise people even with iron stomachs to avoid the meat like the plagues of old, and to sit in the lounge instead. At least their alcohol is decent. read more
