Feeling a bit frustrated with Applebee's customer service. My daughter and I ate at Applebees and we were starving. We ordered some appetizers and one was the spinach dip. It was at the table for approximately 1 min and I reached over with a chip and stirred it up and took a dip. It was not just hot but SCALDING HOT. Clearly, it had been microwaved too long and it took the skin off the roof of my mouth in three spots. The manager took a report and told me, "You should be careful putting hot food in your mouth!" Introduced into their fall menu was an amazing dish called the Sizzlin Cheddar & Bacon Chicken skillet. This dish was awesome then all of a sudden just the other day, for WHATEVER reason, they removed it from their menu. Which is really surprising to me because just last week when I was talking to the Manager at the Manteca location he hinted that this menu option was going to be a keeper but that it was not going to stay the same price of $9.95. Little known secret: I used to work at the Collinsville, IL Applebee's back in college. If you're ever driving through I-40 between IL and MO, you'll see it from the road. Sexy, huh? One would think that after seeing the same dishes over and over again (not to mention coming home smelling like it), that I would never want to eat at an Applebee's ever again. Not true, I do enjoy a visit to the neighborhood bar & grill every now and then. I especially like their mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. Don't ask me why, I just do. While on a recent rural road trip, the +1 and I were deciding which chain restaurant should be our pit stop. Can you believe that he's never tried Applebee's?!? Everyone has to try it at least once... Just as I predicted, the joint was jumping on a Friday night! It really is a hotspot in small towns, and rightfully so since the food is relatively inexpensive and drinks pretty good. Seriously, I bet their perfect margarita would win in a blind tasting. The menu hasn't changed too much since the early 2000's. Which kinda makes it comforting, probably one of the main reasons why chains like Applebee's have stuck around all these years. People like to know what they're going to get, whether it's in Southern Illinois or Northern California. Our total bill for a steak, shrimp, salad and drinks was less than $40. Pretty sure nothing on our plates was locally sourced or craft anything, but it was salty and filling. And sometimes that's OK... assuming it's a "once every few years" sort of thing. read more

However, my experience with their "corporate policy" today has changed my view of Applebee's to unfavorable; hence, the one star. Went tonight with a friend to enjoy the late night happy hour. Ordered one round of drinks (margarita and vodka cranberry); everything was good. Second round, ordered two long islands. Mine, upon first sip, tasted faintly of something chemical-ish (like a cleaning product). I tried cleansing my palate and taking another sip; tasted the same as before. I couldn't drink it at all. Mind you, we've both been to this location before and have ordered their long island. It has never tasted like what I had today before. My friend agreed. We called the waiter over to ask about my drink, in which he then calls the manager. Manager comes over explains that it is "corporate policy" that they cannot take a drink off the tab. Ok, I'm not asking to take a drink of the tab; merely swap it out. He said he could get me another drink, but I'll be charged for it. Honestly, what kind of service is that? You'd force your patron to pay for a drink that does even taste like it should? A loss for one drink is better than a loss of customers. And, Applebee's, you lost two customers today. read more

My husband and I aren't really picky when it comes to restaurants or service, we're pretty relaxed but this place was a dump. When we were seated, our booth (and the surrounding tables and booths) had large food droppings and dirty napkins under them. I had to clean off somebody else's grilled chicken from the bottom of my shoe when we left. Our waiter left half way through our meal, which isn't really a big deal. But he didn't tell us he was leaving. Then when we got our food, our plates were barely half full. The other staff were a bit unprofessional as well. One waiter was telling customers he needed extra cash as he gave them their bill. The other waiters were talking to each other about the football game from across the restaurant. We had to stop our conversations while they were talking because the whole thing was so distracting. The whole visit was a disappointment. read more

And, slow service masked by a corporate mandated, painted on smile. I try to stay away from the mega-corporate restaurants, but, in north Modesto at 10pm, choices are limited for sit-down food and drinks. My experiences at Applebee's have been quite varied, but tonight after class, it was of the 'good' variation. Took a few minutes to get seated, but once we were, Brooks (our server) was super friendly and accommodating the entire time. His smile actually lit the room...no joke. :) Anyway, it took forever to decide what my friend and I wanted because not everything sounded overly amazing, but I opted for the BBQ Pork Sliders with a side of fries (and honey mustard sauce...yum!). My first bite into those babies and I was greatly surprised to find such juiciness and flavor packed into those sliders....it was quite nice! Probably the best sliders I've had...hands down. The rating is for the service we received by the manager. As far as Applebees go, you can count on several things: the food will always taste the same and usually, the service is pretty bland. We ordered take out, and the guy who brought our food out was super friendly. We got home, opened up our food, and the steak that we had ordered well done was almost purple with how rare it was. It was missing several other key components as well, and we called up the restaurant. The manager and bartender took really good care of us when we came back in, and an entirely new order was up in less than ten minutes, a free dessert thrown in as well with everything else we wanted. Only had a dinner salad and when we asked to do our checks split a certain way the bartender got all weird and have us a big attitude after as if we were speaking Chinese. They might want to realize we were on a business trip and that's why we had to split the checks a certain way due to expenses. I've recently been going to the carside to go at this restaurant. It's great. You get the restaurant quality food without getting off your car. I do online orders and they are pretty accurate. My problem is that every time, they somehow mess up the order. Sometimes they forget an item and sometimes they put the wrong one. A couple days ago, I had a good day. I went to my classes, I passed an exam, and I did some online shopping for Christmas presents. A couple friends wanted to hang out so, I mean, of course I obliged! We went to the mall, walked around for a bit, did a little more shopping, and worked up quite the hunger. (Note: This is when mistakes were made) We decided on Applebee's because of the location, affordable prices, and the Monday burger deal ($7.99 burgers and fries). I am quite the bacon connoisseur (not really...I just love bacon) so I got the triple bacon cheeseburger. It. Was. Delicious. The cheese was gooey, the patty was juicy and NOT pink, the bacon was crispy. It was overall quite good. I said goodbye to my friends, headed home, went to bed, and woke up for class the next morning. An hour into my class, I felt some gastrointestinal distress. I am lactose intolerant so I am no stranger to this, but it was different this time. I excused myself and went to the bathroom. I sat there for nearly triple the amount of time a bathroom break should take. I finished up, went back to class, started to die inside, then eventually left the class to (unbeknownst to me at the time) SIT IN THE BATHROOM, DYING, FOR 90 MINUTES. After the intense diarrhea and nausea, and after the toilet seat imprint felt like a permanent body modification, I tried to drive home. I ended up pulling over multiple times to regurgitate my dinner from 10 hours ago. I spent my entire day in a repetitive circle of vomit and diarrhea because Applebee's does NOT STORE THEIR MEAT PROPERLY. I know I don't have E. coli because that takes a couple days to arise, and I am not a medical professional, but this restaurant did not follow food safety protocol. Either they let their beef patties sit at room temperature for too long, only to be frozen and reheated later and served to an unknowing guest, or their staff does not wear gloves/wash their hands/who knows. I cannot go back in time and ask, nor can I change the past. But I can let the fellow food-eaters who look at these Yelp reviews know about this location and the food they serve. Applebee's has very friendly employees, but this is NOT a good place to eat. The food is terrible. The tower appetizer looks good, but no flavor. The fish and chips were way too oily. The batter on the fish was bland, and my fries were cold. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp pasta, and it seriously looked like one of those frozen dinners from a bag. Me, rib basket, ribs have obviously been sitting around and were thrown on the grill to warm (or in my case get burned in places) Sauce has reduced so much that it's overly salty. Fries look like they have been under a hot lamp for a week and taste about as bad. Service, if you have a large 15+ office party going and the place has many open tables WHY would seat others by them. Could hardly hear ourselves discuss how bad everything was. This is where i go for their happy hour, 1/2 off appetizers, good selections of drinks. However i recently took my family their for dinner & we took a while deciding on what to get. When we were finally ready, waiter took our order, asked for broccoli instead of cole slaw & he had a lost look on his face then said well it'll be extra, Which ok thats fine but he made it seem like we couldn't do that when its been done before. The bowl was huge for the broccoli however there was only 4pieces in it & it was almost $3, ridiculous. Food had no flavor, shrimp was overcooked & chicken was pink & still sizzling when it came out so it had to sit which meant cant eat with the family because the plate was extremely hot, defeats the purpose of eatin as a family. COVID-19 is not an excuse for poor service. There was a 30 minutes wait which is understandable. I was seated at the biggest table which seats around 7 people at the entrance of the tent. I ordered a lemonade. A table for three opened, I asked if could move that table. I was told I would have to step out go back on the waiting list and wait again for whatever opens up at that time.
