We just had family visiting from out of the country ; I wanted to share an 'authentic NYC diner experience' with them. Applejack Diner was perfect for so many reasons. First, the ambiance: we were warmly welcomed and seated immediately at an open booth, away from other guests. We were excited to explain how all the multiple photos on the wall were recognized visitors (also the Winter Olympics were on TV, and we were able to follow along!). Our waitress must be a the maternal figure of Applejack Diner; she made us feel right at home and as if we've known each other for a long time. She warmly explained that the portions were substantial, we can all easily share. As promised, the portions of our orders were respectively generous: our guests (a couple) were satisfied with sharing a chicken caesar wrap with a side Greek salad. I had the heartwarming chicken soup, perfect for the stormy winter weather hitting the city. My husband had his usual turkey club platter, which I also got to enjoy. Additionally, there's a small plate with coleslaw and house made pickles - all signature Diner fare and much appreciated. The food was just very bland and not super appetizing. The omelette was the best, but the breakfast burrito was pretty bland. The Tabasco and hot sauce on the table also tasted very watery and had no flavor at all. The French toast and pancakes were fine. My friends and I ordered the seafood platter that consisted of scallops, shrimp, and fish (cod I believe). While the cod was tasty enough, the shrimp was black and rubbery and the scallops completely bland and unremarkable. The diner itself was busy and hustling, maybe a local favorite? It had your everyday, who's who pictures on the wall, and crowded booths. The greeter barely looked at us as he took us back to the table, and never looked back. Then there's the waiter. The. absolute. Worst!!! He did not listen, left multiple times before we could complete our order, and never, at all checked to see if we had everything, or if the order was correct- which it wasn't. We would likely not go back. It was OK. We were passing by and hungry and tired of looking for a spot. They brought me a ham/mushroom omelette instead of cheese/mushroom. Amusingly, when I asked... and said I was ok with the ham as long as it had the cheese... they took it back and gave it a quick microwave with 2 pieces of orange cheese slapped on top. Stopped by on our last day in town for breakfast. Even though they were busy, we were able to get a table quickly. Our server was nice and attentive. The food was decent, normal diner food. Overall it was good and we'd stop by again. read more

The service was not the best. We went back to back mornings to have the bacon, eggs, French toast, and the Home fries and each day it was a different price. Not sure how they work their prices, but it seems that if you don't see your bill, they're just gonna add things in it, not cool. I'm a US vet and I would think that most establishments in New York City would offer military discount, but they don't, but they do offer a discount if you stay at a nearby hotel. Food is bland and especially the home fries. Coffee is strong for those coffee connoisseurs. The staff look's upset when you ask them for service. The place looks like a typical Greek restaurant but not one of the best ones I have been too. I enjoy and love going to Greek Diners but this is one I wouldn't recommend. Good luck. read more

Not my first time to Applejack Diner and it won't be my last! It's a small diner and usually always busy but you get seated in a good time. The manager or owner is always really cool and friendly! I didn't even know this place existed and it was around the corner from the hotel. We stayed up all weekend long. Breakfast was good solid breakfast food. The coffee was perfect diner coffee. The staff was attentive. The prices were reasonable. My only concern? I got the French toast with bacon. Two pieces of French toast. Regular sandwich bread sized and it was $18. I understand New York prices by sure. But a third piece would've made it bearable. I still ate it all. I would still be back. read more

Small diner with a mom and pop feel. We stopped in mid morning on a Thursday so it wasn't too crowded and we were sat right away. A very tired looking and unenthusiastic older gentleman took our drink order. We received our drinks promptly and our waitress was just as quick to take our food order. I ordered a spinach omelette a with cottage cheese just as it was listed on the menu, my husband got 2 eggs over easy and both came with home fries and toast I've made eggs where you whisk in cottage cheese to make the eggs creamier and increase the protein. That is not what this was. My breakfast was a spinach omelette that was folded over about a cup of cold cottage. Which in turn made the omelette cold. The hone fries we're mutilated potatoes that may have come frozen in a bag. It wasn't even worth taking a photo of. My review speaks for itself. My husband's eggs were cooked over easy as he requested and his potatoes were just as mutilated and bland as mine. The waitress did not check in on us and we had to hunt her down to cash out $47.40 was our total. We checked out at the entrance. There was a 3% up charge because we paid by credit card. The same gentleman that greeted us so smiley when we first arrived, barely looked at us when cashing us out but was very purposeful about greeting the next party coming in. We stopped here because it was close to the midtown Hilton in Manhattan. It was unimpressive and a bit disappointing. I wouldn't recommend it nor do I think I'd give it a second try. I had a quick turn around trip to Ny and found this gem of a diner with a lot of history. The food was quickly made and rather delicious. Something that stood out was that the service was fast and very accommodating. The ambiance was calm and professional and I like the fact the servers most of the time just yell the order back to the kitchen. I felt that was very old school and I liked that. It's a bad sign when the host is also the waitress and cashier. 1st issue: the coffee was small, as in really small and only a whopping 3 creamere!! Yes, I could've asked the hostess/waitress/cashier to get more creamer, but by this time, I was just already fed up. The coffee was awful!! I couldn't drink it at all. We asked for water, and the hosr/waitress bought, of course, only 1 water ( go figure). We must have waited at least 15 minutes, although it's light in how many customers they have. Oh well, here we go.. The omelet was good. It has bits of sausage but enough. I'm unsure of the cheese, it wasn't really melted which leads me to believe that it's something else. Nice convenient location in the theatre district and thankfully not very crowded so no wait to get a table. Staff and service were good. Been here for both late lunch and dinner. The menu is plentiful with so many options to choose from - whether you want breakfast all day, lunch or dinner. can't go wrong with whatever you select. Seating indoors and outdoors. There are a couple of tvs if one wants to watch sports game while dining. They have happy hour specials as well and desserts look good. Have to remember to save room next time. Thank goodness this place doesn't believe in reservations. Quirky diner on Broadway- it was full of diners shortly after our arrival. Large portions. I couldn't finish all of it. No room for dessert. We were in town for the parade and lucked in on visiting this restaurant for breakfast and went back every morning! Their service was exceptional and I believe family owned. They were ever ready with the coffee, had a wide selection of food for which all that we ordered did not disappoint. Watch out! The portions of everything are huge. No way we could finish sandwiches or ice cream. Breakfast is more normal but huge sausage and tons of potatoes. As others note it has a huge menu but stuff coming out of the kitchen was all good. No duds. Overall quality is what you would expect in a diner. Breafast fare and lunch fare were good. We never did dinner here. Our breakfast for two was good ranging from $50 to $60 which seems high but hey, it's New York. Lunch was similary expensive as was a late night ice cream dessert. We love this place as it's got a good comfy feel to it and the people inside are VERY friendlhy. I will be back but now I know to order less as more. You won't have much trouble making the credit card minimum of $10 unless you just order a beer! read more

Standard diner with Manhattan prices. We got the calamari, kids grilled cheese, burger, and gyro. All items tasted previously frozen out of a bag, calamari, fries, gyro meat, burger meat, all of it. The kids grilled cheese was a pile of the Kraft singles American cheese slices, the stuff that tastes like cheese wiz, and prices were about $25 a meal, the kids grilled cheese I think was just under $16? We were the only ones there at 7pm on a Sunday night.... The staff was nice and service was good. Don't order the souvlaki kababs they were dried out and stuck to the skewers, you could not remove them without breaking the skewers and cutting the dried out shoe leather lamb chunks in half to remove the burnt wood skewers. Tasted awful. Did they even marinade the meat? read more
