This restaurant has good food, and a quiet atmosphere (they even had an awesome guitar player/singer in the main dining area by the fireplace when I was there last). It's a bit pricey, but well worth it if you're looking for a quaint place in a small town. Update: I went here for a second time and was not so impressed, neither was my companion. It has been closed for nearly a year and I drive by frequently, but still haven't stopped feeling sad about it.** Arboreal Inn is a traditional restaurant that is somewhat hidden away. The food is very fresh and made from scratch. They offer an Early Bird dinner special M-F until 6 p.m. which is a fantastic deal. The special is $28 for two people and includes a shared bottle of wine (or a dessert) and for each diner a soup or salad, choice of small entree and one side (starch or vegetables). The desserts here are just okay, so we typically opt for the wine. The ambiance is classic and rather formal, but a great spot to enjoy a great deal on an early dinner or to celebrate a special occasion anytime. read more

The food was excellent and definitely made in-house. We took advantage of the fantastic Early Bird Special available from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The special is for two and includes a bottle of house wine to share, and for each a soup or salad, choice of entree and side, and bread. We had the Coastal Vines Merlot, a salad with house dressing, black lentil soup with sausage, a Bistro Steak, and Broiled Whitefish. Both of us chose mashed potatoes with asiago cheese as our side. This special costs $28.95. We also added on dessert and chose profiteroles. At less than $45 for three courses and a bottle of wine, this is an amazing value! The profiteroles were the most disappointing part of meal and I would choose a different dessert. Otherwise, this was a great meal at a great price. read more

Hands down my favorite restaurant. The consistency is always there, the food is amazing and service is always on point. Surf and turf is my go-to - the steak is seasoned and cooked perfectly medium rare with a choice of housemade gorgonzola cream sauce. King crab legs are cooked perfect and they crack and split the shell for you. Even the vegetables are side salad are way above average. I don't mind one bit spending the money when I know I'm going to get an exceptional meal. 5 stars, definitely. read more

We have been to this restaurant several times and it has always been really good. Tonight was exceptional though and I need to write a review. The white fish with crab was outstanding as well as the sea bass which was a special. The service was terrific and it's such a pleasure to eat at a restaurant which still offers real white table cloths! We will be back soon. read more

We hosted our company Christmas party at the Arboreal Inn tonight and it was a hit! The restaurant is beautiful and good for groups or a romantic dinner. They had a large wine list and a full bar. The menu was fantastic- it was obvious that they took a lot of care in planning their menu offerings. We ordered the bruschetta, stuffed mushrooms and steak sliders for apps- all amazing! My husband and I both had surf and turf. The steak melted in our mouths and the king crab was amazing! The others in our group had the Parmesan crusted Whitefish, the Salmon and the champagne chicken- everyone was very happy with their food. Desserts looked awesome but we were all to full to even consider trying them. It was a fabulous experience and we'd highly recommend it. read more

The food is consistently good both in terms of quality and presentation. The Atmosphere is very pleasant. However, the service is very inconsistent. For this reason I can only rate the Inn a 3 star establishment. If not for service, it would otherwise be a solid 4 to 4.5 star. Case in point: we have dined there twice in the last 30 days. During the first of these visits, the service was excellent. Responsive and friendly. Tonight, service was terrible. They always ask if tonight's dinner is a special occasion and never in the past has it been but, tonight there was a birthday. Not only was the server slow, unresponsive, unfriendly, and lacked menu knowledge, the initial question of "Is this a special occasion" was never followed up with anything further. The food was great (and, as always expensive) but, the service was absolutely terrible. Very disappointing for an establishment that has the potential to be consistently exceptional and would be but for the service issues. read more

We've been coming to Grand Haven for 6 years for summer vacation and our biggest pet peeve is that we can never find a quality meal. Well that all changed when we found Arboreal Inn. The whitefish, halibut, lamb chops and steaks are all superb. The wine menu is perfect and the cocktails looks great although we stuck to wine. We enjoyed ourselves so much we came back a second night before we headed back to the city. What a gem we have found! read more

The person taking the call actually put the Chef on. He inquired what we were looking for (Beef Wellington) He said no problem, we can make that for you. Four of us went to Arboreal last night for the first time in years. We had a 7:00 reservation and were seated about 10 minutes early. We ordered the duck special, the white fish, the lobster and the crab legs with side salads. Crab legs were $54. We were served the salads About 7:30 and then after they were cleared the hostess came and said they were out of the duck so my husband ordered the white fish. We then waited 50 minutes for the entree to be served. We had an in training waitress that could not have been nicer and apologized several times. Finally the dinners arrived, but NOT worth the wait. The waitress said they had run out of the au grated potatoes so substituted. It was a round riced potato with a little Parmesan cheese on top. Tasteless and under done. They had run out of the carrots so we just got shaved Brussel sprouts. My husband said they looked like they had been scraped from the garbage. They did have a taste....awful. The white fish was mushy not flaky and it was not hot. Crab legs and lobster were good but everyone agreed the sides were terrible. The manager did come to the table and asked how we were doing and we told him. He kept saying what can I do but did not offer any sort of help. He did offer dessert but we did not say yes at that time. He said the potatoes were au grated and then our waitress at the end said that we had got the bottom of the barrel of the parmesan. Whoever was correct they need better sides and if that is their au grated the kitchen needs to look up a recipe for au grated potatoes. When I spoke up and told the manager they had also been out of duck a little after 7:00 he said, "Oh my this table is depressing, I'm leaving." It was meant as a joke but we were not laughing. Two things they should have done is one bring an appetizer to the table after we had been waiting for our dinners over 40 minutes and if they did not have carrots substitute with the asparagus. It is an upgrade, but a $54 dollar dinner deserves good sides. Actually we all did. We were charged full price for half a dinner. We ended up getting two desserts and they were on the bill, but they were the best part of the meal. My advice is if you want sea food go to Leo's downtown Grand Rapids always excellent or Eur Bistro by Cascade in GR. The bistro has delicious brussel spouts. As we were leaving with our masks on there was a man in the lobby talking to the hostess. He was a friend of hers. He didn't have a mask on, but laughed and put his hand over his mouth and said that it was his mask. Again we were not amused. Just a miserable dinner and atmosphere. We got the bill, paid immediately and gave our poor trainee waitress a nice tip because she felt so bad, and finally left the restaurant at 9:41. Go to Leo's or Euro Bistro for fine dining. Definitely not here. We finally left at 9:41. read more

The waitress showed up at the table after waiting a bit... I wished she had just stayed wherever it was she had been hiding as she reeked of cigarettes and I almost gagged. Her personality was deadpan and sullen but she had this smarmy exaggerated "friendly" voice that drove me nuts. The food (tournados, mussels) was mediocre and expensive. If we had a different waitress I might give it another chance, but the last time I was in there I waited over ten minutes and nobody was at the bar or in the dining rooms to even greet me- and two tables of customers were sitting blank faced waiting for someone to show up! If you are looking for a restaurant that has not changed in over 40 years, this is your place. The food is bland and uninspiring, the decor is original and the wait staff leaves little to be desired. The menu is limited and pricey - and does not live up to the term fine dining in any way. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Went here tonight and was very impressed with everything - ambiance, decor, food and service. Everything was phenomenal! Had the Parmesan Crusted White Fish and it didn't disappoint. Wonderful dinner tonight, we went for our 18th anniversary with our son, had tournedos Oscar, filet mignon, and a thai salmon, chocolate mousse...... All were done perfectly. Wow, updating our review three years later, for our 21st anniversary, the new ambiance is great and the food lives up to all the preceding owner/managers. Fine for a special night out, menu leans toward filets, crab, prime rib, etc. Very traditional food done well. We were looking for a really great restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. We found the Arboreal Inn and it was wonderful! From the amazing mussels in garlic wine sauce (best garlic bread ever to dip with), the Lobster bisque, to the entrees, it couldn't have been better. I had the crab legs and they were sweet and delicious. My husband had the salmon and said he would definitely get it again. Monday's are 1/2 price bottles of wine, and there is a good selection to choose from. Our server, Rebecca, was wonderful. Very sweet and attentive. We will ask for her again. I think this might be the best restaurant in the Grand Haven / Spring lake area. My mother and I ate here on a Monday night. I had the surf and turf: a nice little filet with a king crab leg. She had the shrimp scampi pasta special. Both dishes were excellent, as was the starter salad. It's a little pricey, but few, if any, others in the area are attempting to provide fine dining. My wife and I were looking for a nice dinner to celebrate our anniversary and decided to make the drive to the Arboreal. We went on a weekday night and were surprised to find that there was no reservation needed and the restaurant was mostly empty. The service was excellent (friendly, attentive, knowledgeable) and the food was as good as you will find in the area. The only downside I can see during the whole experience was the bathrooms were oddly reminiscent of a very clean coney island. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine was about $100 and well worth it. read more

Grand Haven is a charming community and has some decent restaurants, but nothing terribly elegant or memorable for a nice dinner. Fortunately, the Arboreal Inn was literally an 8-minute drive from our downtown rental, first exit off the bridge and just a couple miles down the road. Our server Anna was very attentive and charming. Starting with a very nice wine and beer selection, and some terrific Michigan cheeses for an appetizer, we had a hard time choosing from a great selection of entrees. Even with two Pescatarians in the party, there were plenty of choices. Of particular note was the "Small Plate" specials, Monday through Thursday, which include a nice entree and a glass of wine for $19.00. Anna made sure that my mother's 3-oz filet with Cajun shrimp was altered to remove the Cajun spice, and created a custom "Noodles and butter" to satisfy the finicky 6-year-old at our table. We shared a Profiteroles and a carrot cake for dessert, both were delicious and a great cap to a marvelous meal. Our family comes to Grand Haven at least a couple times a year, and we look forward to visiting The Arboreal Inn many more times. Definitely the best food and atmosphere in the area. read more

We had purchased a gift certificate for Aroboreal at Restaurant.com. It was worth it! Looking from the outside, we had no idea what to expect and were very under-dressed! We split the Combo (4-oz black angus filet mignon with crab meat and bernaise sauce AND Thai salmon), which included a side salad, bread service, wild rice/baked potato, and asparagus. Quite a portion even at $31! Cheescake wasn't anything to write home about, but hit the spot nonetheless. They have an Early Bird Special going on between 5:00-6:00. Two entrees and dessert for around $25. Beautiful restaurant inside. Waitress offered to let us sit by the fire and she was extremely knowledgable of the menu.
