The course was extremely rushed, the coach RON didn't take the time at all to help people with the things they struggled with, the bikes had bad clutches and my brake handle was dangling. Sh happens to bikes, but they should definitely be checking out the bikes people are going to be using when they have never even sat on one. There were too many people in a small parking lot going around in a circle with someone stalling and dropping their bike 2 feet in front of you. Honestly, you won't leave without learning anything, but it's a waste of money and time. And definitely too much information crammed into a few days. read more

I have ridden before, but that was over 15 years ago and was self-taught. I decided to ride again but wanted to do it right this time. This course is absolutely amazing. Sheryl and Darrell were absolutely amazing!!! They were patient and so much fun to be around. If you are looking for a course that will just sign off on your DL 389, then this course is NOT for you. If you want to learn the right way to ride and how to be safe and in control, then this is it. They teach you every step of the way on how to walk to ride and even how to swerve. I have so much more confidents in my abilities due to their instruction. Some instructors are just doing it because it is a job, but Sheryl and Darrell not only do it because it is a job, but they genuinely care about your safety and well-being. They were sticklers for the little things, like keeping your hands on the handlebars even if the bike is in neutral. I think that speaks volumes on how much they care. While some people may not like that, I absolutely loved it and think that if you can't master the little things then you don't belong on a bike. They criticize your riding because they want to make you better. They want you to stay alive, so stow your pride and learn as much as you can from them. Because of them, I want to become an instructor one day down the road. You might walk in feeling overwhelmed or nervous about what to expect but you will leave feeling confident that you have been given a good foundation to start riding. I had Sheryle as my groups instructor and she was phenomenal start to finish. She was honest, transparent, and wanted us all to succeed without compromising on standards. I had very little knowledge about riding before the class other than being a spectator to family but I left this course learning so much and now have resources to look to. Sheryle was very knowledgeable and that came through right from the beginning of the course and it instilled a lot of trust and confidence that what I was being taught was invaluable. The course itself is great, teaches you important aspects of riding you otherwise wouldn't get from joy riding around. The slow speed was difficult for me but thru constructive criticism I was able to complete and pass the course. This course is awesome. My husband and I purchased our spots a few days earlier and the time came quickly. I was a little bit nervous and just intimidated by the thought of riding a motorcycle on my own but I'm so glad I went through with it. Russ was our instructor and he made the entire group feel comfortable as soon as he opened his mouth. The course is 2 days total and each day is composed of some lecture and hands on training with the bikes. Through the lectures, Russ was very thorough and gave us a lot more information than was on the slides. He answered all of our questions and gave very detailed explanations and examples. On the course, we had Russ and Ron helping us and again, both made sure to give thorough instruction and criticism while making us feel comfortable. We got heavy rain on the first day of instruction so, after a few hours, they offered us the option of rescheduling our entire course for a different time; the majority of the group decided to stay and Russ & Ron pulled through and I think that showed a lot of commitment. They kept asking us how we were doing and emphasized their concern for our safety. As we executed the exercises, Russ and Ron were very observant and gave all of us targeted feedback. I had some trouble when it came to tight turns but they kept emphasizing what I was doing wrong and how was supposed to fix it. I listened to everything they said and was able to properly improve my turns. TIP: *If you happen to expect rain on the days of your training, I HIGHLY recommend you get both rain pants and a rain jacket. We were so much more comfortable because of ours* Luckily, we had beautiful weather on the second day which helped increase everyone's confidence in passing the final test exercises. Little bit of a late review but I had taken this class back in August of 2022, and it was well worth taking. They teach the defensive tactics of driving a motorcycle to even the very very beginning on how to ride a motorcycle, understanding counter steering, understanding friction zone on the clutch, and to shifting gears. Even for experienced riders if you need a refresher course this is a good class to take, both instructors were very patient and answered all questions anyone had. read more

I would definately recommend taking your Motorcycle Safety Course through Arroyo at MT.SAC. the instructor were all super knowledgeable and experienced. As a female rider, I felt comfortable learning to ride in this environment. There were two other girls in my class, which was nice. Everyone in the class got along well and were really encouraging. I passed my class at the end of the two day course, and then passed my DMV written test the following week. I can honestly say I would not be riding as well, in such a short time, without taking this course. The only suggestion I'd like to see is at the end of the course, additional handout on where to take more skills training, using your own bike. Over all, super happy with the class! read more

You sure learn alot in this motorcycle class. Just make sure you get in on time or else they won't let you in. Bring helment, boots, and long sleeve shirt and pants. Pros: -My class was taught by two main instructors. One had 14 years experience teaching the class and 500k+ miles of riding experience. The second was a retired CHP motorcycle officer with 30 years of police experience on a bike. If those resumes don't encourage you to focus on learning, what will? -Each day the motorcycles were set up for us and put away. I felt guilty but certainly didn't complain. I also got to learn on a bike without damaging my own. Between me stalling and my rough shifting, I'm sure I didn't do my loaner bike any favors. -During each riding exercise the instructors gave me constructive criticism on how to improve. I felt the instructors cared about me improving as a rider. -My experience level coming in was low/non existent but I was never made to feel incompetent or frustrated with. -I'll be getting a certificate in the mail that sends me to the DMV to get my M1. Despite that being the main objective, I feel ready for the road and feel I will be a safer rider as a result of this class. Cons: -The range is somewhat unimpressive. It is a faded, uneven black top with hard to see lines. It gets the job done and rarely compromised my ability to learn. It just wasn't impressive. I'm sure there are courses with better ranges. I almost knocked this review to a 4 star because of this but decided it wasn't quite enough. Summary: I traveled from way, way out of the area (3 hour drive) to take this course because of the two day curriculum. I by chance received a 5 star experience and I'm thankful for that. I would like to start off saying that all of the instructors (Chris, Matt, Russel, and another that can practically ride backward) here are incredible and extremely competent in not only motorcycles but also in teaching you how to ride. They pay attention to every detail in you which is no easy task in a class of multiple people. There are various levels of participants in the class. I started off from never sitting on a bike to gaining some confidence on a bike. This is a class for basics, meaning it will get you started on the bike. By no means is this a walk in the park, you have to well-rested and be able to work for your improvements. Listen to every piece of information the instructors give you for improving yourself. The in-class portion of the gives a lot of useful information from motorcycle functions to riding techniques. It is helpful to follow the instructions when you sign-up for the class and read the manual PRIOR to the first day of class. You will get more out of it and remember more. During the practical section of the course, you ride and drill over and over. This is very beneficial to gain the muscle memory needed in riding. You practice many fundamental techniques that begin to get engrained in your riding. During these many hours, all of the instructors look at you very closely and give you feedback almost at every iteration of the drill. Though it was a very intense couple of days, the rewards were great. You get to see not only yourself improve, but also your peers. I would recommend this class to anyone. read more

Signed up for the class on Thursday and started 2 days later on Saturday. READ everything they tell you to read before you go. Class at 12pm starts and be early. Joe was the class instructor and he was fantastic. Very informative and he told us to ask Amy questions no matter how dumb they seem. Then joe and the other instructor Russel did the riding portion. We had at least 6 guys never touched a motorcycle. They all passed the course. And by my judgement they deserved it. Everyone was riding pretty good by the end. What I loved about it is that they taught counter steering and stopping quickly. Stopping quickly was difficult for me but they kept us all doing it til we got it. Counter steering is an incredible feeling. I trusted what Joe and Russ told me to do no matter what i thought about it and it worked just how they said. I know how to ride a motorcycle now. I'm no expert but that'll come with more practice For all of you that don't pass the course, try calling or messaging them the day of instead of wasting your time going there. read more

Great class, the instructors were knowledgeable and made the 8 hours each day go by super fast. My instructors were Eric and Russ the first day, and Chris and Russ the second. Eric and Chris were awesome and made the classroom part really interesting. Chris especially was fantastic, telling a lot of great/funny stories about his 30 years riding for CHP and keeping everyone loose and laughing. The classroom is about 3 hours each day, and there is a 50 multiple choice evaluation at the end of class on the second day. Everything is covered in class, and if you pay attention you should be able to breeze through it. The range portion was also good. Most of the class had some sort of riding experience already, but all the instructors still did an excellent job giving instructions and feedback. Russ, Eric, and Chris were super patient and gave clear directions, even pulling aside and helping a couple of people that were having some trouble at first. At the end of the range practice on the second day, there's an "unbiased evaluation of your riding skills", which they prepared us really well to pass. Could not recommend this class more, regardless of experience. It's very much worth it and teaches you valuable lessons on how to possibly save your life while on two wheels. You also get to bypass the DMV road test and get 10% off on insurance and gear, so that's a sweet bonus. read more

I had never drove a motorcycle before and they helped me feel comfortable and confident during my learning experience. Did the two day class here. The lecture portion was done by Chris V. Retired CHP, with a ton of knowledge on traffic/motorcycle. This guy was awesome, he made the class very interesting. I came to class with only a few hours of sleep but he was so fun and interesting I was wide awake the whole time. Learned a lot, 5 stars for you Chris, good job. The field riding portion was done by Eric, Russ and Kristy. Class split into two, Russ and Kristy got majority (beginners) and Eric had the guys who had riding experience. Russ and Kristy did a great job. At times I think they were slightly going too fast and I had some questions a few times but did not get a chance to ask them. Russ was a cool guy with good knowledge. So is Kristy but I think she can take it down a notch. Maybe she was slightly trying to prove something to somebody... I dunno. She mentioned she had been doing this for 14 years, so she's pretty good at what she's doing. So 5 stars for both these guys. 50 question test, MUST PAY ATTENTION and study or you will not pass. You are allowed 10 wrong. I suggest you go read the MTC handbook (just google it to find it). This will prepare you. Then they "evaluate" you on the riding skills, and mark off points if you miss some stuff. Overall, they all did a great job. Finished the class with more knowledge and confidence. Theory sessions consist of lecture in parallel with mid-session question and answers accompanied by overhead presentation. Instructors encourage students to take notes on important points. Practicals consist of motorcycle riding practice. Novice would feel at home with the pace of ramp up to full riding and defensive maneuvers. No dull moments. Highly recommend. read more

Great class to learn fundamentals of motorcycle riding. Very knowledgeable and friendly classroom and range instructors. My in class instructor was Chris V., a funny ex CHP officer with almost five decades of riding experience. He had lots of great stories about being a moto cop of 30 years, and tips to stay safe on the road. Chris also made the in class experience great by being practical--shedding the superfluous and focusing on the absolute essentials of basic riding knowledge; this is important because a good rider is one who exercises expert judgment so as to not resort to using his/her expert skills all the time. Very zen. Then it was time to get out on the range. Russ was our instructor outside. Though young, Russ was an excellent riding instructor--offering detailed and clear instructions as well as patiently taking (my) multitude of questions. I don't do well with colors and the cones come in various colors that are hard for me to make out but Russ really came through and helped clarify for me which cones to enter / turn through. We had perfect weather during our two day, weekend class sessions. It rained a bit before our field time but it was pretty much good weather, albeit a bit cold, throughout. The instruction I received in the 16 hours of classroom and field classes aren't enough to make me feel confident in buying a hayabusa and revving for traffic to take notice of my presence while splitting lanes 1&2 (remember: in traffic of less than 30mph) but I do feel confident enough to find a bike and start practicing around my quiet neighborhood. This says a lot as I'd had a motorcycle permit for over four months before taking this class, but didn't feel up to real riding until after passing this MSP course. So come for the moto safety instruction and DL389 cert that let's you bypass the dmv moto test; but best of all, you'll be surprised with the awesome cop stories, bikes with distinct personalities, and new friends. Also, bring your rested, focus and attention cos the classes can be long (you get lots of breaks to eat, drink and go potty), and not everyone passes! This is a fun class, but the objective is to learn and improve one's bike riding skills that could ultimately save one's life. Motorcycles are fun but can also be dangerous, so it's important to learn the respect and technical responsibilities required. read more

Honestly both, learning something completely new was rough, instructors made it fun enough to where I wasn't stressing out as much as I could have but also didn't give any unrelated critiques to where I didn't feel pointed out or hopeless. I believe the other instructor who helped is named Carbon and he was very friendly and a great instructor. We also had Ron but he was a bit more intense and blunt when it came to making mistakes but this was a non-issue if you actually put in effort into learning, but if you are an emotionally unstable adult then you might get your feelings hurt if that is the case then maybe motorcycles are not for you. Chris and Carbon made the course simple and fun. Definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in motorcycles. One thing some may not like is the weather since the riding takes place out in the parking lot it could be very uncomfortable. When I went it was extremely hot, but they provided some shade and cold water so that was nice. read more

I have never touched a motorcycle in my life prior to this class however Carbon made the in-class lessons enjoyable (trust me, I thought I would at least fall asleep once, however, Carbon's friendly and joking attitude helped to make the lesson easy to remember. I have zero experience in riding and was very nervous in signing up. I kept postponing it for years and finally did it! Not only was this class very informative but also a fun learning experience. The ridercoaches Ron and Ralph were very professional, patient, and extremely helpful. They both have a wealth of riding experience and knowledge. There were a few existing riders in my class who have been riding for many years but don't have the license, and they were telling us how they are learning a lot from them. This class gave me a whole new respect for riders out there and not only will this class make you a more conscious and safe rider but also as a better driver. I highly recommend taking this class whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider. Warning: DO NOT SHOW UP ON THE POSTED START TIME! Come in at least 15 minutes EARLY. Let me repeat, come in at least 15 minutes EARLY than the posted start time. It clearly tells you on the registration, on the website, and the reminder email that you get a few days before your class starts. If you get dropped that's because your ass is late!!! I can finally cross this off my bucket list -- I came, I learned, I rode. I'm now officially a rider. Take the class even if you're not planning on purchasing a bike.
