My sister had been raving about Artichoke Pizza since her first trip to NYC, so I had to check it out as my first New York-style slice on my first night in the city. They have a few standing counters inside and outside, perfect for a quick bite. - Artichoke Slice -- their signature; super creamy and saucy with a strong artichoke flavor; best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, the portion is huge and definitely on the heavier side but that's what makes it memorable! They also offer other options like crab and margherita if you're looking for something a bit lighter. The ambience is dimly lit with a classic NYC storefront feel: you're here for the pizza. Go with a friend or 2 or 6. Seriously, this place is not be ventured into alone. The slices are huge, they're packed with flavor and you'll want to try more than 1 variety but your appetite can probably only handle 1 full slice. The trademark Artichoke slice was bursting with flavor but super heavy even when sharing with others. Need to come back here on an empty stomach to attempt to try the rest. Their Margherita slice looks amazing as well. Edit: went in again for the margherita slice and it was good but not their best. Tasted a bit burnt throughout. We saw on Google they closed at 2am, and we ordered 3 18in pies for pick up at 1am. The pies were FRESH. They were hot and delicious. We ordered the signature artichoke, the crab pizza, and the vodka pepperoni. Service was awesome especially ordering 3 pies an hour before closing. They didn't skimp on quality or toppings. Everything was perfectly cooked. This little shop does the business well. read more

I ordered two pies and an order of breadsticks, and it was honestly one of the worst pizza experiences I've had in the neighborhood. The cheese literally slid right off the slices, which made it seem like the pizza wasn't cooked long enough. It arrived barely warm, wasn't even pre-cut, and the overall quality was incredibly disappointing. Between the undercooked pizza and cold food, it felt like there was little care put into the order. I usually don't leave negative reviews, but this was unacceptable--especially for the price. I hope the restaurant takes quality control more seriously because this experience definitely didn't meet expectations. Please do better. read more

Wow, had Joe's Pizza in Times Square and Artichoke in the evening to compare. Joes is good with ambiance. Good size slice. Got pepperoni at both to compare. But Artichoke Pizza is much better. Bigger slice, better taste because it is saucier. More pepperoni and thicker sliced. Not the ambiance of Joes but as they are so close, would ten out of ten times eat Artichoke Bassille's Pizza. Also got the meatball. Not as good. Will try the Artichoke Pizza for which they known next time. read more

It's just a good slice of pizza. Is it my favorite? No. Could it be your favorite? Maybe. The artichoke slice is great, but it eats very heavy, so you may feel a little gross after eating it. The margarita/cheese slice, excellent. Thin, large, robust sauce, quality mozzarella, and basil. What's not to like? The vodka slice wasn't memorable. If I'm in the area this would be a place I'd stop at. I'd even go as far as to say that if you're intent on finding the best slice of pizza in NY give it a try. It's quality and who knows, Maybe it will be your new go to pizza spot. read more

Expensive slices, but absolutely worth it, especially because you can get slices. You aren't stuck buying an entire pie. I always go for the artichoke slice and it is just heavenly. All their slices are very good, very rich...but it's that artichoke slice I come for. I compare the pricing to Ceres, which is also excellent...you definitely get what you pay for in both places. Artichoke is easier to get your hands on and has more choices, plus they don't seem to have a limit on how many pies they make...they make them until closing. read more

Such great, hot, large, unique pizza and the location is wonderful! There are never any lines at this location even though I've seen them form at other locations on occasion. The workers are always nice! Be aware of $15 credit card minimum though you can easily hit this with 2 slices. I wish they had diet coke in the mini fridge but other than this I like all their offerings and especially the free pizza toppings. Artichoke slice is the best by far but all are great! read more

Great pizza! My favorites are the margarita, the artichoke, and the crab. The crab is super garlic. They took all of the tables and chairs out of the interior, which I don't like because I'm disabled and I can't sit down. They have tables outside on the sidewalk. read more

Definitely not a classic NYC slice by any means, but my god are the artichoke slices good. Highly recommend for anyone visiting NYC! Service is generally quick and easy except for late night as it gets super busy. Pretty small, not much seating so best to take it to go. read more

Though my opinion on this place may be somewhat inaccurate or rather under the influence, I thought this place was great. The size difference between this place and more traditional slice shops helps to justify the price and the flavor/quality is as you'd expect. Somewhat legendary for their artichoke slice, it is quite delicious and I would definitely recommend it. Is it the best slice in New York, no, but it is a great unique slice nonetheless. read more

This may be my new favorite pizza spot in NYC! Artichoke Pizza lives up to the hype! Very large, generous portion size for a slice. It's so simple but you just get their Artichoke Pizza! The spinach cream sauce as the base is amazing like a Béchamel sauce mixed with tons of artichoke hearts and cheeses. It was so flavorful, rich, and melted together so well with the perfect thin crust that had a bite to it. read more

Exceptionally dissatisfying to walk into an establishment and receive a wonderful service from the employees and then have to experience a decent to awful meal. The pizza was warm close to cold and well we all know how that leaves the cheese. As far as the seating I think it was clean and appropriate enough space for people to sit by themselves. The artichoke pizza at this place is truly exceptional. It's reminiscent of savoring a creamy spinach artichoke dip from Trader Joe's, but in the form of a pizza. The crust is cooked to perfection, with a delightful salty and garlicky flavor that complements the toppings beautifully. While we also tried slices of pepperoni and crab pizza, it's undeniable that the artichoke steals the spotlight. In fact, we even created a heavenly combination by sandwiching the crab and artichoke slices together. The service was excellent; the staff offered to cut each pizza into thirds for easier sharing, but we declined, opting instead for the experience of diving into a generously-sized, dripping pizza. In my opinion, it tastes even better that way. The store offers plenty of space, but there are only standing side tables available for dining. Each pizza is served on two plates since the slice is so big. read more

Earlier this year this dude at the railroad had a pizza box with a few slices of this Artichoke Basile pizza (which I had never heard of) - apparently he walked from 14th st to Penn station holding this pizza box so I was like hmmm it must be really something for All THAT! So Artichoke Basile went on the LIST. A coworker and I split each slice here - the crab slice (I've never had crab dip on pizza and I did not dislike it) - a good consistency, and wasn't overly salty - BUT later on I was so thirsty so so thirsty on the train - deceptively salty. The artichoke namesake slice was excellent. I recommend having just one specialty slice and maybe a different flavor like pepperoni and sausage. I recommend trying Artichoke Basile if it's on your list ! Staff was great efficient and friendly. read more

I'm a big fan of Artichokes and don't see this vegetable as a topping in many pizza spots so had to try Basille. Small and more of a takeout space with stand and eat areas as well outdoor seating. I saw about 8 different Slice options. The slices are huge and can easily feed two. Ordered the Artichoke and Pepperoni/Meatball slices. Artichoke was very good although not what I expected. It's a rich and decadent slice given the cream sauce and two cheeses. Thought the sauce had a seafood taste to it but ingredients don't indicate any seafood. More Artichokes please. Overall, unique slice and one is more than a meal. Pepperoni/Meatball was excellent. Great balance of toppings and sauce and really liked the Meatball topping. Service was quick and friendly. $15 min for Credit Card purchase. Good value for money given the huge slices. Will be back to try the Crab and Vodka slices. read more

The famous artichoke pizza! I came to New York excited to try 2 pizza places, artichoke basille and Joe's. To preface, I am not the biggest fan of thick crust pizza, and this place had VERY thick crust. I ordered the artichoke pizza and the margarita pizza but could not finish either because it was so heavy. The artichoke pizza had a lot of cream and because the crust was so doughy, the whole pizza became pretty mushy. The margarita one was better because it had some freshness from the tomatoes but still not my favorite. Overall, if you're a thin pizza crust fan, I would not recommend. Unless it is fresh out of the oven, the pizza is soggy and heavy. The service was great though and I was able to be served fast! Not much seating inside though so it really is a grab and go place. read more

Good bang for your buck as the slices are huge but they are quite salty and heavy. I enjoyed my initial first few bites but quickly grew tired and had to take breaks. The sauce on the artichoke pizza is good but the dough is thicker. I personally like thin crust so I enjoyed the crab pizza more. Had a chance to try the famous Artichoke Basilles but I'll be honest I didn't love it. This was a cute place with fast service - and I wanted to check it out given the reviews I had read. Not my fav slice, but the artichoke is tasty and I understand the local appeal and hype. The artichoke was my fav out of an artichoke and Staten Island slice. It's a droopier, saucier pizza and a soft, not crunchy bottom crust. Not my fav. At times it felt like only a sauce or soup on top. Not my fav. The artichoke is fantastically flavored. It's really delicious. I didn't eat the crust, didn't look appealing. The staten has good toppings but for some reason the flavor didn't quite hit for me. Great kind service. Real nice guy inside. I'm presuming the average ratings here and on other sites are because of their location and the fact that a lot of tourists who go here can't tell the difference between Joe's and a dollar slice. Perfectly decent slice on the level, if not worse than many slices in the city, as I disliked the sauce, while the rest was fine.

THE BEST EVER!!!I My Artichoke story. (Buffalo typically has a thicker doughy style pizza different from traditional NY style.) Anyways, I was in NY last year with some friends that insisted we go check out Artichoke which they had heard was the best pizza in NY. I have had NY style multiple times before and wasn't totally crazy about it, on top of it I was starving and we were driving all over NY looking for it because we didn't even know where it was. The cabby had heard about it and was trying so hard to find it (yeah right as the meter keeps jacking up). We finally arrived and there was a line of ten people waiting at the door as it started to rain. If this was the best I had to try a slice and check it out myself being very skeptical of the reputation it had. After the first bite there was defiantly something very different then regular ordinary pizza I have tried in the past. My mouth started to water after the first bite i was tasting unbelievable flavors. After a few bites it was clear in my mind that this was truly the "best pizza ever". Buffalo pizza can't even compare and would be totally embarrassed in a head to head competition. I haven't been back to NY since but I have sent several people to your spot with the same reaction. The other day I was actually having flashbacks of my first bite. I might make a trip to NY just to have a slice of pizza. Keep making those pies. So the first night that my roommates and I arrived in New York, we went to Artichoke for pizza because we heard it was simply amazing New York pizza. I have to say that I was slightly disappointed that this wasn't really "New York" pizza since the slices were fairly thick. Nevertheless, I was still excited because the aroma from this pizza joint was just out of this world and the lines was pretty long at 10pm, so it must have been good pizza. They had a crab pizza that I really wanted to try but were out and I would have had to wait, which I wasn't willing to do because I was so damn hungry from the 4hr. bus ride. So I opted to get the Margaritta pizza and it wasn't what I was expecting. I'm used to Margaritta pizzas that have basil and tomatos with a thin coating of mozzarella cheese. So what did I get from this place? A slice of pizza LAYERED with pounds of cheese...ok, maybe I'm exaggerating but it felt that way since I'm lactose intolerant. Anywho, it turns out...I really liked it! The taste of really strong cheese usually disgusts me but I actually enjoyed it this time around. I really do not understand why people like this pizza. It is not NY style pizza and it is not Chicago style pizza as it is not deep dish. What it IS, is an extremely heavy and greasy flatbread. I tried the Crab, which was just some cheap lump crabmeat and what I am guessing was a TON of mayo....I tried the artichoke which was essentially TGI Friday's creamy artichoke dip on a slice..... The margarita was by far the best of the bunch but it too was much too heavy. I just don't get why people like it.....maybe we are a nation that just wants to see how fat we can get. I would say a slice is like a super sized combo meal at mickey d's.....I am guessing it is either fat people or super skinny rails that can't gain an ounce no matter what they eat that like this place.....or a bunch of tourists and nyu frosh from west of the mississippi......er...make that west of the deleware! I remember the first time I tried this. My friend took me here, telling me that this little hole-in-the-wall has gotten amazing reviews and that we had to try it ourselves to confirm. The line was long, which (to me) was a good sign since New Yorkers generally are impatient, so if they're willing to wait, that MUST mean it's good. We both got the Spinach-Artichoke slice, hearing everyone talk about it. At $4, I was a little shocked, but then when I received my slice, I understood why: my slice was freakin' huge!! A huge slice of oozing spinach, artichoke, & cheese. As Rachel Ray would say, "Yum-O!" I totally recommend this slice, especially if you like spinach-artichoke dip. I never had pizza that tasted like this before. It literally tasted like the dip on pizza! And the bread was thick and doughy enough to absorb all that deliciousness. Overall: I am a huge fan! Someone told me to come to this Pizzeria because their pizza slices were apparently the second coming of Christ. Well we better hold off on any assessment of that kind since my Crabmeat slice was like the second coming of Satan: Deceivingly expensive, unbelievably overwhelming, and devilishly disappointing. It was limp and the meat was falling right off. A little shot of pizza Viagra (a nice oven) would have worked, but the guy behind the counter served it lukewarm to me anyway. I came back to wait in line with another friend who owed me a lunch and I got to try their Margarita and Artichoke slices. The Artichoke was delicious. Just crazy good to the point where I felt like I was supposed to be smoking something with it. Went to NYU & used to come here a lot. It's actually been about a year, but Trump winning the NY primary reminded me again of the types of worms that conduct business in this city. The manager of this joint is a straight up racist. I'm looking at the skinhead who runs shop whenever he's around. Think he's the cousins' uncle or something. All I ever asked for is a beer & slice of pizza from this asshole and he'd give me crap about my last name every single time he checked my ID, even though I was a regular at that point. Yesterday for the third time while waiting for their signature Artichoke and Margarita slice to warm up I had to endure the Pizza guy once again and his fellow employees curse and use foul language. This time the "Fat Pizza-jerk" was picking in slang Spanish this poor Mexican helper. The little guy had his hands in his pocket not knowing what to do. Went to visit my best friend in Philadelphia and she took me to this place in the city. It was the first time I've tried pizza from the east coast so I was NOT a disappointed!!! OMG this place was this best pizza I've tried. Man I wished you guys would expand over to the west coast. I saw this place online and always wanted to try this... I've never tasted something like this in my life. I really love pizza but now I feel like other pizza will not be up to par as this. It was a Saturday night and we decided to eat out, I've done the googling and found Artichoke Basille's Pizza. We didn't go for the famous Artichoke Pizza (sorry for that!) but we tried Vodka! Don't worry, it's the name of the pizza, not the drink in this case! So, vodka is added to the sauce, just DELISH, Vodka is not only for hard drinkers (hahah), but also for big cheese lovers and HUGE pizza fans, try it at least once in your life, totally worth the money. Their signature Artichoke pizza is what keeps me coming back - creamy sauce, perfectly baked crust, and whatever else that gives it that full flavor. The vodka pie is also really good when you're craving something saltier but similar to a regular slice. The pizza margerita is awesome. As you can tell, I can rave about everything that they serve here. This location is very small, but most people tend to order to go so it doesn't get too crowded. Hands down the best pizza in the whole city. It's always open late and the Sicilian is my personal favorite. The lines can be long and the place in TINY (sometimes you feel squished and can wait a while) but the wait is always worth it. Also ALWAYS check in on FourSquare because you get a free soda with every slice! The pizza is kinda pricey so this "free" soda goes a long way. The guys there aren't the most friendly but they work hard. There are so many dollar pizza places in the area... ignore them all and go to Artichoke. Not sure if the other locations are bigger. This is my local place and I'll keep coming as long as they keep making their delicious pizza's. Yum! read more

I had no idea that it was called anything other than 'Artichoke'! But whatever it's called, they make a damn fine pizza. The namesake is clearly the best: if you don't like artichoke (in dip form), eat your pizza elsewhere. You only need one slice! The slices are huge and very filling. The only other type of pizza that comes even close to the magic of the artichoke slice is the crab pizza. Not quite as good, but still worth it. I've had the margherita and white slices; they're tasty, but not amazing or inventive. If that's more your speed, you can definitely find something cheaper. But if you're looking for a giant piece of pizza covered in artichoke dip, get it here. read more

I'm going to put it out there that my brother works there, but that has no influence on my review. Every now and then he would bring home some pizza but never any for me...I have been wanting to try it for the entire 6+ months he's been working there! I got a slice of the artichoke and that's when I realized what all the buzz was about this place. It was the best slice I have ever had in my life. Being italian, that's a big statement. Definitely has to be one of the most overhyped spots in the city. The guys that own the place played their cards right because you can't beat the location. I had a regular slice which is bigger than your average slice of pizza, but the crust was charred, and for the money I shelled out, the crust should not be charred. Just looking at the artichoke pie on the counter made me want to vomit. Whoever said it's pizza bread with artichoke and spinach dip on top, this seems to be accurate at least from looking at it. We were lucky enough to find seating since we came with a rush of people, but it cleared out enough by the end that there were plenty of places to sit and no line.

It's a solid/good slice, and if I lived in the area I definitely would want to come around more often. Especially if you are a sauce-lover you'll want to check this place out. Otherwise the slice was standard/good and was certainly on the oilier side, cheesy, and had a nice heftiness to the crust. I enjoyed it and it fit the bill for what I was looking for. Wishing them success as the pizza competition in NYC is just getting stiffer!

The only thing in common with the actually famous Joe's Pizza is both are named after a guy named Joe and both serve New York style pizza. It's not a bad slice at this not so famous Joe's Pizza, but also not a great slice. That being said, it's better than one of those $1 (now $1.50) slice places. There are nearby other, better pizzerias for a comparable slice for a comparable price. But if you're looking for convenience, you could do worse than this Joe's Pizza, so it's your call!
