We arrive plenty early and not too hungry, prepared to wait. It's easy to fill the wait time with a drink across the street or a walk around town. I've done a lot of traveling in Italy and I can say that eating at Arturo's is the closest I've come to having an authentic Italian dining experience in the tri-state area. For those of you lucky enough to have tasted Anthony Mangieri's pizza at Una Pizza Napoletana in nyc, this dough is similar in taste and texture and it has the slight char around the edges that characterizes traditional Neapolitan pizza. It's tangy and chewy with a creamy mouthfeel...topped with fresh tomato sauce, fresh mozz and fresh basil (the margherita)...it's just, well, freakin' delicious. Another must-try is the 6 course tasling menu that is served on Saturday and Tuesday nights. My favorite course is almost always the hand made pasta. It's egg-based pasta in the style of the Piemonte region of Italy ...rich, unctuous and addicting! Now there are 2 things that you must know! 1. You will have to wait! And not 15-20min but like 1-2hrs so be prepared! Bring a nice bottle of wine, put your names on the list, park up at a bench and...wait! 2. The wait is worth it!! Everything and I mean everything is delicious! Locally sourced ingredients that are super fresh and of the highest quality. When you start off with good ingredients its only uphill from there. So you waited and waited and now your in! So where to start, the Kale salad, Gorgonzola and Pine Nut, and Sognatori salads are all knock outs! Plus you'll still have room for PIZZZZZA! If your really hungry, (I usually starve myself all day if I know I'm going to Arturo's later) typically I am, then get the Polpette Al Forno. These are the best meatballs I've ever had, super moist and delicious and I want them to bottle that marinara sauce. And lets not forget the wild mushroom ravioli, soft pillows stuffed with heavens best mushrooms swimming in god's gift to the earth...Truffle oil!!! My husband and I started off with the mixed baby green salad with prosciutto di Parma and shaved Parmesan. The greens were tender and sweet, lightly dressed with an abundant amount of prosciutto. The prosciutto was perfect. Sliced oh so thin that it practically melted in your mouth. We shared the Santo pie. It was heavenly. Light airy, fermented dough crust that had a nice tang to it. It had crumbled sausage, red onion and chili oil and their own freshly made mozzarella. Delicious combination. While trying hard not to sound like Armond White against all these 4 and 5 stars, the place was decent (as in I would return), but hardly worth the accolades being thrown at it. The bread they give you is honestly a work of art. The perfect combination of a crunchy outside with an almost oily center that made it a hit. The fire-roasted broccoli was simple yet very good. I had their barley soup which was a bit bland and lacking a strong backbone, passable. The meatballs were very good, and the sauce that accompanied them was even better. Simple execution, but that's where its beauty lay. Like a lot of reviews have stated, the crostini was great. The ricotta was cool and buttery, with a touch of olive oil and coarse grated black pepper. Again, a simple presentation that paid high dividends. Are you starting to see a running theme? The place prides itself on letting the local ingredients shine without losing its flavor in overcomplicated sauces, and I really liked that. The pizza was good, not great. After reading the reviews on yelp, I was expecting to be blown away. That could have been my fault, but I will say the crust was good. I had the wild boar with penne and mushrooms which was tasty, but could have used a little salt and the boar was either overcooked or didn't have enough of fat to keep it moist. The best dish I tired that night was my girlfriends wild mushroom ravioli, which was AMAZING. One of the best raviolis I've had in some time. Do not pass up on this dish. My boyfriend and I ate here for Sunday lunch. I ordered a personal Margarita, he ordered a Montagne and then we sat at a table outside in the sunshine. Our waiter was extremely helpful and cheerful and quickly brought out a carafe of water. The pizzas came out and while they looked beautiful, they did not taste as good as they looked. My pie had a good amount of tasty mozzarella, but barely any sauce. The sauce seemed to be the only element giving any flavor. Overall my pie was too bland to be called anything but 'ok'. My boyfriend didn't really enjoy the Montage. He said the taste of the spinach overpowered everything else on the pie - including the speck. I enjoyed my meal mostly because of the beautiful weather and the good vibes of the waiter. Pizza was also something we enjoyed after beating the rival town's Little League baseball team. I still have fond memories of gathering at the local pizza parlor accompanied by seemingly endless pitchers of Coca-Cola. We'd always order our favorite, a simple cheese pizza with pepperoni. No grated Parmesan, oregano, arugula, goat cheese or sun dried tomatoes, just a simple blend of processed cheese and overly salty, cured pork made by high school students earning minimum wage. Back then it was yummy. Today, well, not so much. In college, pizza was considered one of the five food groups. You could live on pizza and beer, not giving a thought to what would happen to your body by the time you were a senior. NO PAIN.... NO PAIN was the mantra of the day; it was dinner and often times, breakfast the next day. So was the beer. Life was good. Today, there's a wood fired, brick oven, gourmet pizzeria on every street corner offering countless numbers of toppings from imported Italian sausage to Korean kimchi. Who would have ordered a gluten-free pizza 40 years ago? Did we even know what gluten was back then? I certainly didn't. After having lived in two of the greatest pizza meccas in America, Boston and New York City (then moving to Short Hills), I thought my pizza adventures were over and relegated to clipping Domino's coupons for a free two-liter soda with my delivery. Then I discovered a tiny restaurant that wouldn't take any reservations, didn't have a liquor license but served an amazing pie. It's the best 20 bucks I ever spent. Perhaps the flavor comes from the en vogue locally sourced, organic farms and/or the care in which the kitchen bakes this ancient delight. Regardless, they've discovered the perfect recipe that brings this Central and Southern Italian staple to another level. Pizza was first documented in 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy. The precursor of pizza was the focaccia, where toppings were added, in particular, with innovations like the use of the humble tomato, which was brought to Europe by way of the Americas. The first reference to "pizza" in the US was in Boston, then spread to Chicago, then to New York, by two chaps from Naples, Italy. Seriously, not a negative thing to say. Yes, there's a wait, but if you've brought your own wine (it's byob), the staff will bring you wine glasses so you can start sipping while waiting. We waited ca. 25 mins on a Friday night at 8pm. The starters were excellent: the polpette were lovely meatballs in a marinara sauce we scooped up with bread, every last drop. The bread: moist, earthy, with a lovely crust. And the sauteed greens, lacinato kale, were unbelievable -- still chewy, rich, perfect. We ordered a pasta and pizza, the Telefono and Montagna, respectively. As others have no doubt reported, the pizza is outstanding: just the right amount of char on an otherwise moist crust, the perfect proportion of sauce to toppings. I could eat this every day. The pasta was good, nothing special, which is not a complaint: with so many champions on the field, it would have been hard for this to shine. And it was probably just too "mild" of a dish, given the fuller flavors that we paired it with. Next time, I'll try the boar ragu or the mushroom ravioli. And a special shout-out for the service, which was attentive but not cloying, and just extremely friendly. Living next to Arturo's might be one of the greatest things to happen to me. This is the place to go for phenomenal real pizza. The crust is bubbly and wonderful and all of the sauces, toppings, and cheese are very high quality. Their wait staff is so lovely and they all really know what they're doing and know the menu well. There is inside and outside seating when it's nice out and it's BYOB without an uncorking fee. You can run across the street to the wine shop and grab your favorite bottle. As someone who actually has had some very good pizza in Italy I can say that Arturo's pizza rivals any pizza I had in Italy. Arturo's does pizza right by using fresh ingredients. Last we went to Arturo's (a few weeks ago) we ordered the Crostini Ricotta appetizer. Bread is good, ricotta is fresh and then it is drizzled with olive oil. Our favorite pizza is the Bianco. We ordered Arturo's pizza for our 4 year old's birthday party back in Feb. Usually when you go to a children's birthday party you can expect flavorless, greasy cheese congealed cold pizza, so all the parents were pleasantly surprised to see we actually got such good pizza for a kid's birthday. Children prefer high quality food, and they knew they were eating the best pizza they ever had. For the first time in children's birthday party history the kids were asking for seconds and thirds. We ordered more than enough pizza for a fairly small birthday party, but everything was done within 15 minutes. Not one slice left. The only downside to Arturo's is it is a very small restaurant and seating is limited. There are more seats during the summer when the patio opens, but it's a very small patio. Expect a wait, but somehow someway we have always managed to get seated within 10 minutes at a table we want on the patio. If the wait is too long you can always get take away. Arturo's doesn't really make those lists as it's not known like a lombardi's, but it is literally the best pizza I've ever tasted. The service was very friendly and competent and the food is truly special and delicious. In comparison to any restaurant in Manhattan or Brooklyn Arturo's completely holds its own, with the added benefits of being extremely well-priced and friendly. Yes the food overall is very good. I haven't been to their other location Razza in Jersey City, curious how things are going there. The consistency of the pizza crust is marginal, you will get a thin but soft and undercooked crust, not the crisp you would look for. Whenever I've ordered to take home I heat up the pizza again to get the crust crisp. When I eat in its typically too soft as well Sometimes it's heavy with char, which is fine, but given the oven I would expect a firmer crust here. Sauce is sometimes very light IMO Given the ingredients are local and fresh, but not specified as organic, $8.50 for a side of meatballs is quite aggressive. Overall prices are high but not horrendous In a NJ suburb, this will be some of the best food out you can get in terms of quality ingredients and taste. Any salad you get sub out the dressing for the chive dressing. They source a ton of their food locally and you can taste the freshness. After some Yelp research, we detoured here to break up the trip from MD to Long Island to check out Arturo's brick ovens. Rather than make the hard choice, I just ordered 3 pizzas for me and the baby with the excuse that we'd take the leftovers to Grandpa in Long Island. Wifey claimed she was in no mood for pizza, but ordered a tomato mozzarella basil sandwich on a beautiful hearth bread. Her sandwich was 5 stars for sure. Pizzas were definitely 4 stars on the thin crust (a bit cracker like); but the chef stopped by for a chat, he told us to order the NY style crust next time since it's based on the same bread dough in wifey's sandwich - I'm betting that's where the 5th star happens. Ended up here after wandering the cute Maplewood Village looking for a place to eat. On a Tuesday night at about 7:15, the wait was 20 minutes for two people to sit indoors, but we could sit outside immediately. We chose the outdoor seating, and it was great -- only downside is that the seating area is quite crammed, and the "for two" tables were very tiny. The menu had enough to make me want to come back several times to try all of the pizzas and pastas, but my date and I settled on splitting a medium pizza. Unfortunately our waitress seemed a bit turned off by the fact that we weren't ordering a ton of food--I can't blame her, small bill equals a smaller tip. But the "Parma" pie that we got was still delicious. A blend of gorgonzola, mozzarella, parmigiano, romano and provolone cheese with freshly sliced plum tomatoes and plenty of basil for seasoning. What perfect blend of cheeses, nothing too thick, greasy or congealed like the cheese you'd see a top a NY-style pizzeria. It was melted to perfection. I would definitely go back. With the intent of ordering more food (there are some pasta dishes that sounded and looked to-die-for), I'd opt for a seat inside so I didn't risk pushing any dishes off the tiny outdoor tables. read more

I will save the food review for second but first I just have to rate my service experience. My group of 4 were waiting on line for the place to open at 5pm in the brisk chilly weather and when they opened the doors, the staff let 2 groups of people come in through the side door avoiding the line altogether forcing my group to be literally left in the cold without a table in the restaurant. When we tried to explain what happened the woman seating people didn't seem to care and offered us an outside table. We got some food to go and overall it was good but not extraordinary. Tartufi is mushroom, sausage, and truffle oil. Montagna is arugula and prosciutto. Then we have the cinghiale pasta which is wild boar in a light cream sauce. Awesome pizza. The best around here. We have probably tried most of if not the entire menu. So good. Always a huge hit. Never have I gone and was disappointed. I've brought lots of friends here over the years and everything is delish. From the crostini to the pizza and the pasta. Highly recommend. We usually go once a month if not more.
