We were pleasantly surprised when we chose to eat here. After shopping at the San Clemente Outlets we noticed the Asada Cantina + Kitchen and decided to give it a try. The ambiance is very casual but upscaled, the decor is beautiful and rich feeling. The outdoor patio area is huge, appearing larger than the inside of the restaurant. The service was spot on, very assertive and polite. The food tastes excellent as well. The menu is slightly limited but with a great selection of appetizers, entrees and drinks. We were pleased that we chose to try this restaurant out and will definitely return now that we have it on our radar. The food was horrible. I my friend and I ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos. First of all there was about 3 ounces of fish in the taco. Not enough for a meal. The flour tortilla was mushy and so we could not eat the taco because it fell apart. It came with rice and beans that were just cheap food. I left hungry. So disappointing. Surprisedly a good place to come across when in San Clemente! The atmosphere felt fancy and the service was friendly. The price is a little pricey but had good portions. Asada Cantina does not disappoint. My husband and I tried it for the second time, and were very pleased. I love the decor and ambiance and of course would expect that in San Clemente. We made reservations and were seated immediately at a nice table near the windows. I enjoyed a refreshing and tasty coconut margarita. It was like drinking a Mounds bar without the chocolate. The salsa and chip BOTH came to our table pleasantly warm. The salsa was a deep red with an almost roasted enchilada sauce flavor. I also ordered the carnitas enchiladas with black beans and cilantro lime rice. All was excellent and I was able to have two lunches from the leftovers. The people up front did not take down names and forgot to seat people. It was quite disorganized. i had to flag the people in front to let them know that I was still waiting and they forgot about me. I had to flag people down to take my order but because it was busy it's understandable. Edible food overall. Vegetarian fajitas were edible but they used way too much lemon so it was quite sour. The free chips and salsa were good. The salsa was served warm. The moist towel at the end was a nice touch. It was quite loud but the Latin music in the background was nice. I am sad to announce that I am no longer willing to eat at this establishment. I have enjoyed this place once or twice a week for over a year but things have changed around here as far as the staff and food. The place is beautiful but that is not why I kept coming back. Two weeks ago was not great and it really opened my eyes. Last week I had guests in from out of state and I wanted to take them some place nice. It was a party of six and the chips and salsa were not up to par ( no warm chips or warm salsa so I asked if we could get a new batch the waiter acknowledged me and it never showed up. When the food arrived only 1 out of 6 received their food as ordered. Chicken rather than Short Rib Taco, I had asked that No guacamole or sour cream be sent on my plate and it arrived on my food etc. And it didn't stop there. Tonight after ordering the chips did not arrive until after my meal had arrived, ( everyone else got chips) I had asked the server and later the manager, (no hurry here). I had to ask for silverware. The Fajitas were good and Normally the rice is great but not tonight. The rice was dried out and the rice and beans were served at room temperature. When I was trying to get the server's attention to pay the manager noticed me and he offered me a free desert after me sharing my experience. I told him that I wasn't here for a free desert but rather a great meal and good dining experience and they had fallen short the past few times that I had been there, as he said, I am sorry. My experience was far worse than mentioned as I wasn't able to write every thing down in one review. I am also very disappointed that it cost me as much as it did to experience this kind of service and food. I guess I need to stay away for awhile. read more

Very cozy.... friendly staff... Our first time in the place. Good food , huge plates, shareable. Price is affordable as well. No problem with the parking, it's a good location along the outlet. All of the salt seemed to destroy any of the entrees and other offerings. In short, everything was overly salty, perhaps a marketing ploy to encourage buying more drinks. I genuinely think it's the best mexican food in San clemente. Their chocolate cake is the best cake I've ever had. Great service, really cool like speakeasy vibe with warm lighting (nice If you're like me and get headaches from LEDS). Great drinks. Their chicken asada bowl is perfection: beautifully seasoned chicken, with incredible rice and black beans and wonderful guac & a poblano sauce to tie it all together. Extremely disappointed with my experience at Asada. I went with a dear friend who is a strict vegetarian, and we both ordered nachos -- hers explicitly without meat. The restaurant was abnormally dark, and we honestly thought we were seeing black beans on her plate. Instead, she suddenly realized she was actually chewing on steak. This is not a small mistake -- serving meat to someone who is vegetarian is unacceptable!! Our waitress was nowhere to be found, so we had to ask the hostess to track her down. When we finally explained what happened, she said she needed to speak with her manager. The manager came over and explained she had been "trying to figure out" which table had received the steak nachos by mistake -- and now she knew. She asked my friend if she wanted a fresh order, but of course her appetite was ruined. Once a vegetarian bites into meat, the meal is over. What shocked me was the lack of urgency, accountability, or genuine concern. The manager said "sorry," and walked away. For such a serious mistake, that response was incredibly underwhelming. At a minimum, our meal or drinks should have been comped, and we should have felt that the situation was taken seriously. Instead, it felt like they just wanted to move on. This was a careless error and an even worse recovery. Very disappointing and not a place I'll be returning to!! read more
