We started with a cocktail. I had the dirty goose and my husband had an espresso martini. Now, here is where I get a bit particular...these martinis were perfect. Perfect ratios, taste and thank you God, COLD!! Someone please tell me why it is so hard to get a good martini and COLD???!! These cocktails were lovely We then ordered dinner. I had the chopped salad, and my husband had the lobster bisque. Both were fabulous! For our main dish I had the 10 oz filet off the menu, my husband had the filet special with the bone. Mine was with gorgonzola cheese and cabernet reduction my husbands was Oscar style. Both were perfect. We ordered the lobster mac n cheese and the asparagus - both perfect sides! We each had a glass of wine with dinner I had the prisoner and I cannot remember what my husband had - sorry - it was a cabernet - both accented the main dishes perfectly For the birthday dessert was a small chocolate espresso cake with small cheesecake. At first I was like, meh, cheesecake, but here I am surprised again. They brulee'd the top of the cheesecake - that took it to the next level and the chocolate espresso cake was fantastic with my red wine. The ambiance is pleasant. It was a busy night in the restaurant, and it has a certain buzz about it. There were times it was hard to hear the person sitting next to you (and yes, I have had my hearing checked and it is just fine). I had never been here before. We're not really steak house people because my husband makes them better than any restaurant I've been in! We do occasionally go to one and the food is usually very good - we just never get steak. A friend took us here for lunch. It's really a very nice place. It was obviously upscale and looked great. We were greeted and seated right away. Our server came over and took drink orders. When she came back she went over a special or two and gave us time to make our choices. I visit this place often for lunch as it's right by my job and every time it is even better than before. Consistency is key and they have they down packed! I have tried several different menu items but the burgers are to die for. Juice oozing out of them. The duck fat fries are yummy too. Went to The Capital Grille and had such a great experience, a lot better than my first one. They're currently offering a $35 Wagyu burger special paired with a glass of red wine, with three different burger options to choose from. I went with the mushroom & Swiss, and my friend got the blue cheese burger which came with a delicious truffle mayonnaise. We also tried the Peach Bourbon Smash made with peach purée, which was so good. They even let us sample one of their infused vodka drinks. I will start by saying that the cocktails, the food, and the service were outstanding on Thanksgiving Day, as we expected when we booked our reservation weeks in advance. My notes involve the pre-dining experience. #1 was the 20-minute wait for a reserved table at the non-peak dining time of 3pm. I assumed the servers, on fully-booked days, remind the diners of their dining window to allow the tables to be bussed and turned over for the next reservation. That clearly was not the case. #2. I was irritated that reservations were freed by cancellations but your system would not allow me to change to 4pm or 5pm after I accepted the only available time of 3pm weeks earlier. #3 What is the point of a dress code at a fine dining establishment if it's not enforced? Clearly many nearby residents look at The Capital Grille as their neighborhood diner, so it's important that dress code reminders are included on all reservation sites, on all reservation confirmations, and in the confirmation call (that I was shocked to receive). 75% of the attire on Thanksgiving Day was atrocious. We were disappointed with the cocktails at our lunch place, so we left and came to, The Capital Grille where I knew the cocktails were masterfully made. We stopped in for the first time on a Friday to enjoy dinner with friends. We chose to sit in the bar for a more casual vibe. Our server was great and attentive to us throughout the entire meal. We started with appetizers and drinks. The calamari and prosciutto wrapped mozzarella were fantastic starters. I came here for a solo birthday dinner. The restaurant was very dimly lit; perfect for an anniversary, date night or b-day celebration. I wanted to sit alone, in a corner for privacy. The steak was great, the brussels were good (wish I had a little more bacon), and my au gratin potatoes- the cheese tasted a little charred but cooked well overall. The shallot butter was INCREDIBLE. I had plenty of leftovers. Corbin took my food to wrap up. I was presented with some complimentary birthday dessert, flourless chocolate cake and creme brulee, and a glass of champagne. Very delicious, nice touch! I would have given 5 stars, but I was very disappointed and annoyed with how my leftovers were stored. They weren't compartmentalized or placed in individual bins. It was like Corbin or whoever, just flipped my plates over and tossed them into the to-go bin. My shallot butter was just tossed on top of the steak in a container. Had an awesome guys night out at The Capital Grille in Clayton, great atmosphere, great conversation, and even better steaks. We kicked things off with oysters and a seafood tower, which were fresh and a perfect start to the night. The standout was the steak lineup: the Gorgonzola encrusted ribeye was a huge hit, and the 15-year aged balsamic ribeye was absolutely amazing. Cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. I was at The Capital Grille with my sister for Thanksgiving dinner. Our entrees were great, as were our drinks, appetizers, and desserts. And the service was FANTASTIC. However, we did have two issues during our visit: 1. Wait Time Despite having made reservations, we waited about 20 minutes to be seated. There seemed to be an issue with turning over tables in a timely manner. As my sister & I waited, along with several other dinner parties, we constantly saw the staff walk back & forth between the dining areas and the front desk to communicate with the hostesses. The check-in process could definitely benefit from more technology (text messaging, two-way radios, etc.). 2. Dress Code There was no apparent enforcement of the dress code. The required attire was business casual. However, I saw numerous people wearing jeans, sneakers, sports gear, etc. The dress code is literally etched into the glass window at the entrance! To be fair, this is an issue I have with many fine dining restaurants, not just The Capital Grille. Is it too much to ask people to dress appropriately for dinner? We have enjoyed Capital Grille as an easy go-to steak night dinner. We've been a handful of times, and enjoyed the service a lot throughout the years we've been coming. Loved: the service. The truffle fries are always consistent. The option for a chefs cut steak so I have a better smaller portion. The Kona crusted steak is a great option Liked: I used to think the lobster bisque was the best, but I think it's not nearly as good as it used to be. It's okay, but I may stop getting it and am disappointed as it is a lot less lobster and less bisque than it used to be. Very nice food and dining experience once you find the parking garage or valet I ended up doing valet which was $12 cash or card at the end of your meal! I sat towards the back with the kitchen I loved it was able to see how the guys got the orders out etc. I also enjoyed the decor my favorite was this stature of an eagle it was beautiful right in front of the kitchen now off to the menu items I tried an on the menu item which were 6 fresh oysters and an off menu appetizer that was to die for it is called cast iron shrimp comes with 5 very large and meaty shrimp with thick bread cut in between the shrimp and a white wine sauce with a few cherry tomatoes to throw it all together. It was sooooooo good and definitely worth a try. Next was the main course in which I opted for the sea bass with asparagus and mushroom with a garlic sauce and a strip sirloin medium with a little pink. With a glass of Trimbach Riesling to wash it all down. The sea bass was perfect I would've enjoyed more white sauce but that's personal preference and I'm sure I could've asked and been accommodated. The Strip sirloin was cooked to perfect asking directions and you could taste the caramelized charr on the steak! With everything mentioned above you all know I didn't opt in for dessert but they had a few classic and nice once to choose from I was too full. I was in St Louis and was told there was a Capital Grille nearby. We had an excellent experience at the Capital Grille in Baltimore and so we decided to try this one. The restaurant is cozy and well lit. The menu did seem to be the same as the one in Maryland. I had a cocktail called the Blackberry Bourbon Sidecar, the only let down of the night. It was more sour and tart than the one I drank in Baltimore, but was still enjoyable. I ordered the New York strip dry aged and it was perfectly cooked to rare and was a great tasting steak. We ordered several sides, the Brussels sprouts, the au gratin potato and the cream corn. All well superb. We figured it out since we were there and didn't want to leave, but this is really poor communication for a restaurant of this quality. Had high hopes for a visit to CG. Planned for a New Year's Eve celebration with friends. 8:30 reservation had us seated about 9:10. Had high hopes as several folks had recommended the tuna steak and that was what I was looking forward to... Capital Grille-purported to be fine dining. It's not. Expensive but not fine. APPETIZERS- Prosciutto wrapped mozzarella was delicious as was the fried calamari and hot peppers. Friends enjoyed the truffle fries. DRINKS- All enjoy their cocktails but Coke Zero was out so it was Diet Coke for me. Salad- Split a Caesar salad with my wife. The Caesar was absolutely boring, no real flavor at all. ENTREES- Tuna dish...again, I was told the tuna steak was great but it's not a tuna steak, it's a tuna dish with a piece of seared tuna. I asked if I could just get a tuna steak, rare, seared, and peppered. I could tell from my explanation of what I wanted and our server's explanation back to me, I was going to be disappointed. I opted to not get the tuna dish and opted for sides...more on those later. My wife ordered the lamb chops medium, pink warm center(per the server). What she got was well done... and our server took quite a bit of time before checking on our food once delivered and we pointed out that the lamb chops were indeed NOT medium. Our server took them back as we ate the rest of our food (more on this to follow). Friend said his sea bass, although a small portion, was delicious and friend who had the sliced filet mignon enjoyed it but said it was not cooked evenly. Friend who had the 10oz filet mignon also received her steak medium rare as opposed to the requested medium well. SIDES- Asparagus was fine, even good, but not remarkable. Brussels sprouts were good, a bit squishy and the Brussels sprouts at Bonefish Grill are better. Both were good sized portions. DESSERT- Wanted something for dessert but nothing drew my fancy and waiter didn't provide any insight into a good choice so we opted not to waste more money chasing a dessert. AMBIANCE- Loud and super dark. As a table of six we had to raise our voices to club level to speak to each other. SERVICE (or lack thereof)- Upon seating, the water guy gave my wife the stink eye for attempting to move her glass closer for him to reach and then he spilled some on the table. Waiter was rushed and clearly more interested in moving between tables than really assuring we had a good experience. As I shared about the lamb chops being incorrectly cooked, I didn't think twice about him taking away the incorrectly cooked portion and because he chose to rarely check in on us, we had all more or less finished our food when he popped back up with "correctly" cooked lamb chops already wrapped up in a to go container...What do we want that for? And the meat stayed in the bill (shame on me for not noticing). Real fine dining would have A. Asked us how to correct the error and B. Taken the meat off the bill automatically. And to boot, the lamb chops had ZERO seasoning! I'm drinking diet Cokes but always tip like I'm drinking cocktails. The amount of time I had to wait for refills was ridiculous. Applebees would've filled my glass faster! Waiter clearly had not understood initially how to split the bill between the 3 couples and so he placed all the appetizers on my bill (he told me that as he brought the bills) and also added other's drinks to my bill. He could have asked to make sure but didn't and these are 30+yr friends so we can figure that out on our own! Overall- This was our first time at CG and like Ruth Chris' nowadays, this is an overly expensive restaurant that has nicer decor than Texas Roadhouse but not better steaks or service If you want a great meal, steak, and actual fine dining, head to Annie Gunn's or Citizen Kane's. For fine dining when steak is not the go to, head to Akar in Clayton. Needless to say this will be our last time at Capital Grille as I have all the confidence another visit would be a similar experience again and was not a one off night. Came here the other night with some friends and we loved it!! My sister and I split a dozen oysters and a steak which were both delicious! (Loved how they split the steak on separate plates for us) Our friends ordered the lobster Mac and cheese and the fries as some sides and both were great. Had the most wonderful experience at Capital Grille! We went out to celebrate my boyfriend and I's anniversary and when the staff called and confirmed our reservation and asked if we were celebrating anything, they went above and beyond!! Our table was so thoughtfully decorated to start the evening. Then our waitress came by to introduce herself and give some details on the menu. She was very friendly, helpful, and attentive the whole time. Then we were served a delicious bread basket with onion bread included (yum!) Our food and drinks came out super quick as a well. I especially loved how large the portions are! You are able to order half sizes of all of the sides and it was still plenty to share between the two of us! She even brought us out complimentary desserts for our anniversary, which were absolutely divine, even though we were so full!! The restaurant has a nice, classy typical steak house feel. All of the staff were incredibly sweet and welcoming. You can pay for valet parking or park on the street in Clayton. This restaurant truly knows how to go above and beyond. The staff had confetti, a fresh rose and a card signed by all the staff members on the table for our anniversary. We had a bone in filet, salmon, brussel sprouts and fries for our shareable sides. The salmon was more of a lemon flavor if you do not like the fish taste you'll enjoy this. We went to Capital Grille for a double date during Clayton's Restaurant Week (Jan 20-26) and tried their $79 per person three-course menu. For appetizers, we had the New England clam chowder, which was flavorful and warming, and the field greens salad, which was light and refreshing. My husband and I came here for our anniversary. 10/10 recommend! Excellent server- Greg Wade went above and beyond to help us celebrate our special day. Service was exceptional. Perfect ambiance to celebrate an anniversary or special occasion. Food was excellent as always. The bread was fresh and so good. The lobster and tenderloin was spectacular and same with the filet mignon. The asparagus was perfect and lobster Mac and cheese was also great. Definitely could share the sides with 3-4 people. Cup of soup $12!!! The smallest cup Ive seen in 50 years dining out!!! Oysters rockefeller $23 for 4 and 2 of the 4 oysters were the size of a quarter!!! All bread crumbs and cheese-very very disappointing!!! I. Cannot believe they let that out of the kitchen !!! The steak and fish were good. We however will not go back again.
