I've always enjoyed Ashley's when I've had the time to sit down and grab breakfast. The menu is full of classic diner options and it's likely if you're a frequent visitor, everyone will know your name. My last visit I watched two people fight for who could pay another regular's birthday breakfast tab. I love the sense of community. I typically will stick to a breakfast combo #4. It's pancakes or hashbrowns with a side of sausage, bacon, or ham. I'm not a big fan of eggs, so this is always a safe route without feeling wasteful. I had the Ashley #2 and wow!!! They have perfected the basics! Everything on my plate was delicious and exactly how I like! the amount of bacon they gave me was impressive! IYKYK! They were peeled & boiled & slightly fried but not much flavor. The English muffin was wrenched with butter..not good. The bacon was a cheap brand. I'm definitely not coming back. If I could give this place no stars I would. I waited forty minutes- it was not full - not even half way, we were just ignored as the waitress loudly ranted about another customer giving her a bad review. Finally our order was taken. A simple order, pancakes , steak and eggs and cheese grits. So another almost 40 minutes later it comes out. Cold pancakes, cold steak and extremely cold bacon. Upon complaining to the waitress she told me the grill was 400 degrees and I was wrong and had let it sit so there would be something to complain about. Why would I want to just sit there even longer especially since you have to pay a parking meter. I left, refusing the whole order. Horrible service, Horrible food, horrible experience. Little hole in the wall that's run by an 85 year old lady where the locals apparently come in droves. Huge props to the only girl who was serving everyone. Her dishwasher walked out and she was all on her own. She worked her butt off as the restaurant had a constant flood of locals coming in for breakfast. She never stopped moving or smiling. Food was great, with big portions and a grandma homemade taste to them. Not a 5 star establishment by any means but the service was stellar so it gets 5 stars from us. read more

We stopped at Ashley's on a road trip from Montréal to New York. Wow! We were so pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. A truly local place in downtown Hartford with a wonderful sense of community. The breakfast was freshly made and insanely delicious. Coffee even came for free with most of the meals! The service was incredible. Our waitress was kind and attentive to our every need. Homey seating inside or street dining outside. Street parking is free for 2 hours, close, and convenient. However, today the food was great as usual but the fighting amongst the owner, his mom, family and beautiful friend was unbelievable. I was completely embarrassed . So if you don't care about cleanliness like I do and just want a friendly family owned diner style restaurant then that's on you. I had a very unfortunate sight of John (the owner) touching and drying his hand on the wet cleaning rag while making our wrap and breakfast sandwich (switching back and forth between the food and the dirty rag) like he was anxious. I got so grossed out so I asked him to change his gloves after he touched to answer the phone as well. The food was okay, it's the sauces that that douse it with that makes it. I truly couldn't enjoy it after what I saw. The price was okay. We were not told there was an extra charge for food modification and there was so we had to the waitress where we were at and she fixed the receipt in the end when I told her I will review based on what I saw and suggested they should create a system that can protect their clients health. Definition of a hole in the wall, which is usually the best! The food was good but, sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Super busy with only two waitresses. I could have survived waiting over 40 minutes for our food, but not when a party of four (we were two) who gets seated at least 10 minutes after us gets their food 15 minutes before us. Our waitress was apologetic and kept thanking us for our patience but it wasn't until I finally got up to say we really needed to get going that I heard her say, "I need that big breakfast asap." Really? I know she's not doing the cooking but she couldn't have said that about 20 minutes earlier?? We were served quickly after that - except for my husband's pancakes. This is a great little breakfast spot. My husband and I love going out for brunch and were looking to try somewhere new. This was recommended to us and did not disappoint. 1.) Just to warm you up: I've been eyeing this place, because I love going out to eat breakfast, yet I'm always very skeptical. I have this dilemma with wondering if I'd be wowed by a breakfast place, or if I should just stay home and make my own breakfast/brunch. I had to try it due to the reviews on Yelp. 2.) What your eyes may see: Clean, nice and light, larger than what I pictured from the photos. This place is run by an older Greek woman, who you will watch run the show. She cooks, cleans, takes down the orders, everything. 3.) Food: This hungry jack ordered French Toast, a Breakfast Burrito with veggies and a side of Corn Beef and Hash. Everything was great. Right off the grill everything was served hot. The french toast tasted rich, being full of egg; breakfast burrito was great, having a good amount of veggies, and the flour tortilla did not fall apart. The corn beef and hash was great, too! I noticed that salt was a big component in the hash browns, I was too busy eating I couldn't see it all. 4.) Service: Ashley, the owner, was a very sweet woman. She gave me the feeling that I was at home visiting my grandmother, who is Dominican. I heard some Spanish music playing at that moment so I automatically assumed this was a Latin run place. Nope. She told me she was Greek. Awesome as well. Ashley and her staff were very attentive. To be honest, it was amazing how this woman of her age was able to gracefully do all of this stuff without skipping a beat. I mean, I was in love! That was fun. Ashley's is a divey diner. I sat at the counter and enjoyed the action. Uh oh.. my coffee cup remains empty after the initial fill... the cook glances over at me and asks (heavily accented. . Greek?) If I want more... then directs me to the pot and tells me to help myself.. sweet! That's the family feel to the place. It's family run, noisy with happy patrons... I can see why some people aren't as enamored with the place... they got busy and service was .... interesting.. personally, I had a ball. So did the group of four down the counter from me... the server was really busy with the tables, so the cook had a guy from that group (see picture..patrons pitch in) serve his group.. he got into it and seemed to have a good time. I had the big breakfast.. it was kind of big. The eggs were slightly under cooked. . But not enough to complain about. Bacon was crisp, sausage was decent. Home fries were excellent. . French Toast was good too, it was eggy. Coffee was just OK. The cook also checked me out, my bill was 12.76 but she didn't want to deal with change and just rounded out up to 13.00. We love diners. We love breakfast. We're food-lovers, but breakfast is one of the meals we'd rather not cook. So we go out for breakfast -- a lot. We were greeted with a smile and served coffee soon enough. Everything else was okay -- yep, just okay. The coffee was, well, diner coffee. The eggs were done very nicely -- and to order. Breakfast potatoes were run-of-the-mill, but certainly edible. However, the ham ordered with one of our meals was cut in a peculiar fashion and appeared as if it'd been re-heated in a deep fryer. Now, I rather enjoyed this, next to the potatoes, but I don't know that our more health-conscious friends would be as happy with it. The place is bright and airy, but not the cleanest. When we arrived at 10 in the morning on a recent visit, there were several tables in need of cleaning -- we had to dodge them in order to find a place to eat. And moved again, when we discovered nobody was checking the side-room. We sat in the main room, across from the counter, and endured cold blasts from the front door. We *really* wanted to sit in the side room, but felt that we'd have been forgotten had we done so. Well, despite our efforts, coffee came rather late on this visit. If you're downtown and want breakfast, this is the place to go on Main Street. The only other options are Max Bibo (uber-expensive and carry-out; no service) or Dunkin'. read more

We are from out of town and looked this place up. Seemed to have good reviews. Was very disappointed! We got seated fairly quickly however it took like 45 minutes to get our breakfast. There was only two of us. A group of four men came in 15 minutes after us and sat across from us. They had a different server who seemed to work very hard and was responsive. They ordered and got all of their meals and even finished them before we got ours. Pretty sad. Our server apologized once for the wait but when I got my meal it was supposed to come with pancakes, so she said it would come right away. Well, I finished almost my entire meal before they came. Didn't really feel like they cared. I would not try this place again, which is sad since it has potential. Too busy with to go orders taking precedence over customers in the restaurant! Food was just average at best and I asked for turkey bacon and turkey sausage as it was a choice. I got the turkey bacon but it was burnt and then the turkey sausage was just a hot dog (not turkey) cut in half. read more

We stumbled upon Ashley's restaurant on a Sunday morning after we found out our fave restaurant in the area was closed. I have to say, I'm glad we came here for breakfast. The atmosphere is interesting...there were tons of knick knacks for Christmas and a few family portraits. The decorations give the restaurant a quirky but homey feeling. When we arrived, there weren't too many people there but a few at the counter. We pushed some tables together for our party and was quickly helped by the waitress. I have to say, service was kind of slow and at one point they allowed me to go behind he counter to help myself to coffee and water. But..,there are only two women who run this joint. So, don't expect speedy service and enjoy the charm of this restaurant. For food, I had the farmers omelette which was pretty tasty. The omelette was a tad over cooked but the hash was super tasty! I was worried that the hash and onions would be too much but it wasn't at all. The home fries are cut up potatoes with seasoning...pretty basic stuff. Unless if you specify, you will only get white toast. The other menu items Are your basic breakfast items: pancakes, eggs, home fries, hash, french toast, etc. Just peaking at the lunch menu, I think I need to come back and have a gyro. read more
