I had several early meetings in Hartford last week. I was looking for a diner serving strong coffee and quick breakfast. The food came out relatively quickly, but it was hands-down, the worst breakfast food I've ever been served: 1) PANCAKES: I think Ashley poured the pancake batter right into a puddle of bacon grease. Not only did the pancakes taste like grease, but the tips were speckled with crusted burned bits of meat. Frankly, inedible. 2) BACON: Nothing was wrong with the bacon, thankfully. She even cooked it crispy, as ordered. 3) COFFEE: Fine, but it took a while for a refill. read more

The name really says it all - it's Ashley's place - she does everything from take your order to cook the food to serve it to ring you up. She was one other person to help her a bit, but this cute Greek woman runs the whole place by herself. You seat yourself and get your own coffee and waters and then place the order with her at the counter. It has an almost cafeteria feel, but the food is good and hearty. I am always looking for a new breakfast spot and this hit the spot. The place is not fancy but it is clean. The food is good, your basic breakfast fare. What gives this place it's character is Ashley the owner who is the cook. She is friendly and enjoys cooking for others. Prices are reasonable and this particular Sunday there was a wide range of customers, college students looking for a hearty breakfast after a night out, a young family looking for pancakes after church, etc. I will be back to enjoy a quick hearty reasonably priced meal. Been there twice. First time was pretty good, it's nice to have a simple breakfast spot within walking distance of downtown. Went again today, and I left without eating a bite. Ordered a breakfast sandwich and it came with sausage instead of bacon. Ok no big deal, waitress took it back and yelled at the only cook, an elderly woman, to make a new one. With total silence throughout the place it made me feel uncomfortable. It came back, but had no bacon this time, and the bagel was stale, chewy, and they didn't toast it. I felt bad but if that cook had her glory days with home cooked meals, they are long gone. The food is inconsistent and low quality, the service is also inconsistent and if it was a little more homey and genuine I may consider going back. There is absolutely nothing healthy on the menu, they don't have fruit or baked goods. Maybe they're a little busier on weekdays, but they don't have any competition other than dunkin so that may be why. As a downtown resident I'm pretty sick and tired of not being able to have a quality breakfast (maybe with a couple more options other than eggs and homefries) and a quality cup of coffee. I don't think it's too much to ask, considering there isn't a grocery store anywhere, to have a place somewhere downtown that's consistent with the quality, service, and hours. read more

Ashley's is small family owned, diner style restaurant in Downtown Hartford. The owner and family matriarch prepares your food and serves you herself. There are also other family members hard at work in the kitchen. Everyone is very friendly. Ashley's is known for their breakfast but I had a meatball grinder from the lunch menu and thought it was fine. The sauce was a bit tangy for my tastes but I enjoyed my meal. Something bothered me however. The food is prepared in front of you and no gloves are used. I am under no delusion that anyone is preparing my food with gloves on in most restaurant kitchens but there's something about actually seeing it that bothered me. I was also a bit concerned that there was raw chicken in a storage container next to the potato salad. Everything is chilled and in its own metal container but it made me uncomfortable. That said, there's a big A rating from the Health Department on the store front so my concerns are apparently unfounded. read more

Ashley's Restaurant is a small place - maybe 6-7 tables, but more than accommodates the number of people who seem to be eating breakfast here. The decor is a little bit old school / eclectic (look for the Magic Eye poster on the wall a la 1995). The food is pretty much your classic breakfast foods. It's decent and it's served fast - you can see an older woman in the back working double time to get it out to you. However, don't expect to be waited on quickly. The waitstaff here is slow - seems like they want you to get your own coffee and silverware every time I am here while they are sitting at a table in the corner. Bottom line: Decent place, but could use some updating and some more motivated waitresses. read more

This is a great little place to get a diner style breakfast. The prices are great and you get a big plate of food. Ashley is the sweetest woman. She takes your order and makes it exactly the way you want it. The food comes out super fast too. None of us had the pancakes but I could smell them from the next table. I feel like you can't lose here. You can also get just about anything you want. They have corned beef hash, breakfast sandwiches, steak and eggs, even pork chop and eggs. It is a small place and a warning, they do not have air conditioning. So in the summer with that big cook top going...pretty hot in there. Nevertheless, a good place to get breakfast, and I will definitely go again. read more

About 15 minute walk from Hilton where I stayed, you get to see Bushnell park along the way, it's small but by Hartford standards, nice enough walk. I wish I could give no starts do to the worst customer service I've ever experienced!! Upon our initial entrance my husband and I were not greeted, and once we were noticed someone told us we could sit anywhere so we did. Five minutes later we were approached by an impatient waitress who asked us what we wanted to drink and while we were deciding she grew even more impatient so we just decided on water. She then left to give us time to decide what food we wanted to order and then came back to the table less than two minutes later and asked us what we wanted to order. I proceeded to attempt to order egg whites and was immediately interrupted by the waitress, who told me that "that would take a minute" and that she was too busy. So I then proceeded to order something else but my husband was already turned off by her angry demeanor and asked if I wanted to leave and go somewhere else. Feeling very uncomfortable by her attitude we decided to let her know we were all set and she we left. We will not be returning!! read more

After reading a few reviews here yesterday, I thought I'd drop in this morning and order some breakfast sandwiches and a side of cornbeef and homefries to go. I arrived at 10:30 after any breakfast rush. Only a couple of customers happily eating in the corner. Ashley greeted me personally, super mom like and adorably friendly. I ordered for me and my wife, and sat down to wait for the food. It only took about 11 minutes and she said I looked hungry so she had given me some "extra". I dipped into my wallet to pay the bill, and was embarassed to realize that I did not come prepared with enough cash. She said don't worry about it and smiled and accepted my $18. (Sandwiches $5 ea, plus large styrafoam takeout container) When I got home to my wife and we opened the carry out bag, we discovered Ashley had given us not only what we asked for, but a heaping extra helping of bacon and sausage. I look forward to returning to Ashley's Restaurant when ever I have time for comfort food in the late morning. read more

This place is one of the hidden gems of Hartford you hear about. You won't find better service and a nicer family to have breakfast or lunch with. The owner has been working in diners for 40 years and she still cooks just about everything. They have good diner food and some Greek food as well. A lot of it is on the honor system. This is a great little gem in Hartford. I have had nothing but great experiences here. The staff is very friendly, and the food doesn't disappoint. It's very consistent and they don't nickel and dime you for everything. Very welcoming. One waitress. Seat yourself. It looked like a promising place. We sat at the counter and watched everything. Ashley did not wear gloves and took money and continued to serve food without washing hands. She would use her finger to scrape of the butter on to the pancakes and also to serve bread. The other guy dropped a knife, picks it up from the floor, wipes it off and puts it back on the rack. The same hands touched someone's bread and serves it to them. The food was normal. We were overcharged. We won't come back here again. We just want a good brunch place!!!!! read more

We didn't have much luck at Ashley's. We got water while getting our food choices down. We were never asked what we wanted to drink. The waters were never refilled. We were in town for a wedding and decided to stop by Ashley's for breakfast. We were completely let down from the beginning. We were seated at a dirty table which was then wiped with a bleach water towel that left water drops on the table. The server then placed our napkins and service ware on the table which soaked up the bleach drops...we wiped the table dry ourselves and she brought new napkins over. We ordered our drinks and asked for a recommendation from the server on what we should order and she looked at us and laughed. I'm not sure what that meant... We ordered our food and continued to wait for our breakfast for almost an hour...no one had come by our table to explain what is taking so long, we had no refills on our beverages and had to walk to the counter for our own refills!! One of the four people at our table had to leave to get back to the hotel to meet the other groomsmen so my boyfriend went to the counter and explained we have been waiting an hour and had to leave. She asked us to stay that the food was coming right out. She then delivered a mess of French toast to the three of us who had ordered it. It took another 5 minutes for the next order to hit the table which was burned toast, raw potatoes, burned sausage and eggs. My big breakfast came out with just as many issues....the eggs had a slice of cheese unmelted laying on top and the smallest portion of anyone at the table who ordered the same, the potatoes were raw, not the amount of bacon that's supposed to come with it, no sausage at all. My boyfriends came out just about the same except his cheese was literally a slice that had place on top of his eggs that was still cold, he did get his sausage. Everything we ordered at the table wasn't good...at all. No one came back to visit and refill beverages or just simply ask if it was ok. Service was horrible, food was equally as bad and it took us 1.5 hours to eat there which is ridiculous for breakfast! read more
