This one is kind of tough to rate. I went here about a week ago with my girlfriend and had two plates that had such a wide variation in quality, that I have been trying to decide how many stars this place truly did merit. The dish I ordered, spicy shredded chicken, was huge, delicious, and definitely spicy... just the way I like it. My girlfriend's plate, on the other hand, was horrible. She ordered the sesame chicken, one of her favorite chinese dishes. Unfortunately, the chicken they used that night was some of the fattiest pieces I have ever seen. As this was only my first visit to Asia Cafe, and I enjoyed my dish, I am hoping that maybe the sesame chicken was just an exception to the rule rather than the standard of their fare. The real bummer is that my girlfriend despised her plate so much, that she has since said it will be at least a couple months before she will be ready to eat chinese food from any restaurant again. Spicy Fish, Twice cooked Fish, General Tso's Chicken......can you say AHMAZING?! Yes, its that freaking good. I have to be honest we pulled into the shopping center, looked at the outside and kept driving despite the great reviews on yelp. We were judging the book by its cover, this doesn't happen often but I guess we were a little off that day. So, we were driving by and decided we were being foolish, how many "hole in the wall" restaurants had we been to and loved....plenty. Walked in on weekday afternoon, it was pretty busy. Ordered the Spicy Fish and General Tso's chicken and vegetable fried rice. Ive literally never had fish this tasty. So full of flavor and has the perfect kick of spice. It was so damn good we went back a few days later after craving it. This time we had the Twice cooked fish and Sesame Chicken. The sesame chicken was nothing to write home about, that's not to say it was bad, it just wasn't even close to the fish. My favorite thing is the food does not make your mouth feel caked with msg. So this place has been a constant for me. Today, I reached my limit. Ive enjoyed many dishes here. Spicy fish is my go-to dish. I will say, the last 6-7 times I've been, there has been no soup. Whats up with that? If you run out of something 10-15min into the lunch rush, why not make more the next day? The spicy fish tasted good today but the sauce that it was served with was as thick as gravy. In the past, it would coat the back of a spoon. Today, I could barely get through the sauce. The food here is good. Very good. It's not as flavorful as Din Ho in some dishes but the huge selection makes up for it. It's a good place to get in and get out as it's just counter service with plastic plates and Styrofoam cups. My wife and I call in orders to them all the time and just come pick them up with no issues yet and the portions are large. read more

Been here multiple times with co-workers, every time I have been there, the food was fresh and very good. My favorite was the spicy fish, which we got by accident. I had ordered the spicy beef, but instead they brought this plate of sizzling spicy vegetables in a fish sauce that was just excellent. That dish has now become the groups favorite. Went here with some chinese friends on new year's eve and had a ton of excellent food. We tried a lot of different dishes that were all really good, but the ones that stood out were a dried beef with cumin, garlic eggplant, and twice cooked pork. We had a fish too. This has to be one of the best Chinese Restaurants to eat at in Texas. Since moving to Austin area I have been going there off and on because of their unique dishes. One thing that surprises me about this place is that they even make their own bacon that they implement in some unusual yet tasty dishes. I'm really surprised to hear so many people say that this is the best Asian food they've had, or that this food is authentic. For real? I guess if you just want normal Americanized Chinese food this is the place, but if you drive just 7 mins down the road heading south on 183/Ohlen Rd exit you will be sure to get authentic Chinese food. This is definitely my favorite restaurant in Austin. Everything I have had there is delicious. The ambience can be a bit hectic and very informal, but I like stuff like that. This is the most interesting Chinese restaurant in Austin. Most Chinese restaurants serve more or less the same thing. They may do Kung Pao beef or General Tso's chicken better or worse than their competitors, but you're not having a culinary adventure. The Asian Cafe menu consists mainly of dishes you just don't see elsewhere. They say they're Sichuan, but it's not the typical Sichuan you see in the U.S. The ambiance is zero, and it's not particularly cheap in my view, contrary to some of the other reviews. Most dishes are in the $12-14 range, and they don't have lunch deals. (My recollection is that it was significantly cheaper when it was at the back of the Asian grocery store next door.) Still, I have not found any other Chinese restaurants here that offer the novel (for Texas) cuisine you can find here. The food is always tasty and generally served quickly. read more

Best Asian food anywhere. They do server everything family style, so it is much more fun in a big group. If you have a large party they have nice rooms you can go with out any extra charge. I really like this place. I'm vegetarian and they made accommodations even with non-vegetarian dishes (although obviously they probably can't do that with all of them). The eggplant was amazing. We also had a tofu dish that was incredibly delicious. The portions were ridiculously huge--two items provided about four meals. Asia Cafe is UNBELIEVABLE! We just moved here from San Francisco, and we were looking hard for something that would fill that very special craving for tasty Chinese! Well we certainly found it here!!!! We ordered the Spicy fish and the Eggplant with garlic and ground pork. Those are the 2 most popular dishes on the menu and I can certainly see why! Spicy, savory, super-rich in flavor. They will gladly make your food without MSG upon request, and the portions are giant! Each plate also came with a small bowl of rice. You must get your own silverware, napkins, and drinks, but I know that not having full waitstaff keeps the prices much lower, which was a happy surprise on the check! After someone at work brought food from here for us all to share, I decided I had go here and actually give it a real try. After looking through a menu, I settled on the spicy fish, as was recommended heavily by coworkers. The person working the counter was very friendly. After getting a glass of water and sitting down, I began waiting for my food. The wait was very short, and my number was called. I grabbed a pair of chopsticks and returned to the table with my food. The fish was amazing. It wasn't too spicy, for sure, but the flavor was very good and the spice was adequate. The vegetables served with the fish were also very good. I am very unhappy to see all of the negative reviews that are on here, because they honestly seem entirely unwarranted. Reading through them, I found complaints that I certainly did not witness at the restaurant. I had very good, very friendly service (despite one customer giving the place a single star for having a single bad experience after many good ones) and the food was delicious. If you are looking for delicious Chinese food, this seems to be an excellent choice. It was a little more expensive than I'd like it to be, but the portions are large and the food delicious. I will certainly be coming back in the future. Even the negative reviews praise the food, which I consider the most important thing. read more

Having read some very good reviews of this restaurant on Yelp, I took friends there, quoting some of those very reviews. The food was greasy and horrendous. Each of us ordered something different, but everything, except for the steamed dumplings (which were very good), was floating in oil. Didn't grow up eating much Chinese food, but fell in love with the cuisine after spending extensive time in Southern China, and Beijing. Asia cafe is the closest thing I have found to the smells and tastes that enriched my life while abroad. I have been to Asia Cafe many times, gotten a variety of dishes, and they have never disappointed. Favorite dishes include Spicy fish, sauteed baby bok choy, frog legs, and mango chicken. My wife ranks this place a 3 but I rank it a 5. So we're meeting in the middle. I love the food here. Boba teas are ok, but not as good as coco's. The menu is huge and the food is very flavorful. Well, the chicken with beech mushrooms was a little bland, but the garlic mushroom chicken and beef and broccoli rock. Definetly my favorite Asian resteraunt in town so far. Mediocre food; horrible service; It was my first time here and I called in a to go order. I arrived at 8:59 to pick up because I didn't realize they closed at 9pm. I rushed in and there were about 50 people in there eating. She immediately scolded me and told me to come earlier and that the register was closed. I have been going to the Asia Café since it was located in the back of the grocery store, and have always loved the food. Closest Asian food I can find to when I lived in San Francisco. However, the Asian Café has started charging for rice. $1 for every fistful size bowl. A Chinese restaurant charging for rice tells me that they are struggling financial and will we closing soon. read more
