Super Strong 4...2/2 of my 2 excellent experiences I was lucky enough to recently have with the great local US specialty that is Seattle Style Teriyaki. Teriyaki is to Seattle what Pizza (or halal carts) are to NYC, Burritos and KBBQ are to Los Angeles, Italian Beef Sandwiches are to Chicago and so on and so on, If you are not from or spent any time in Seattle and have had something called teriyaki, you had only a pale imitation as one must come here to experience the real authentic and transcendently delicious thing. If I had a gun to my head, and was forced to pick a favorite of the two teriyaki shops I tried, I would have to give a very slight edge to this spot, over the nearby and also very excellent, (and previously reviewed) Okinawa Teriyaki. In all fairness to Okinawa it most be noted that I ordered differently here than there. This time around, other than the standard regular chicken teriyaki/beef teriyaki combo I opted for the spicy chicken option, alongside the beef teriyaki and side of gyoza that I got the previous time. So not surprisingly the spicy chicken had bolder flavors and more of a kick than Okinawa's regular chicken, though still well within the realms of tolerability to all but the most spice-averse. I would say however that the beef was also significantly more flavor packed and perhaps of a slightly higher quality than Okinawa's, and here was served more finely sliced, in a manner that produced slightly more tender melt in our mouth beef than the stringier beef at Okinawa. The chicken was also perfectly juicy on the inside and crispy smokey, caramelized and charred on the outside. This was across the board a much saucier affair however, as both proteins had clearly been treated with a very healthy second saucing post grilling. The Gyozas were a bit larger than Okinawa's here, but just as deftly fried with an addictive crunchiness and no sogginess. One small caveat here I would note was that they give an excessively large side order of rice here, so much so that I still had rices leftover even AFTER using it so soak up the significant excess amount of sauce from the meats. This would easily have been remedied if I had taken the lovely ladies offer of an extra cuplet of sauce, which I would have never thought necessary when first glancing at that super saucy combo. While my maiden teriyaki experience with Okinawa was, like surely many others a product of following the advice of the now legendary listings of Seattle Teriyaki parlors by the great local food expert J. Kenji López-Alt. my experience here was the happy byproduct of relative chance, aided by a quick yelp cross reference. I was lucky enough to stumble upon this place and grab a crucially quick to-go combo on my way to the central train station to take the Amtrak down to Portland Oregon, the day after the election. The yelp reviews looked legit enough for me to take the chance on the clean, super bright spot with decidedly much warmer service than Okinawa, and devour the heaping platter of saucy, flavorful teriyaki and popping fresh gyoza while enjoying another lovely scenic trek down the rails of the Pacific Northwest and for a few moments anyway convince myself all was well in my beautiful country, and try to block out the encroaching darkness on the horizon, if only for a few minutes. read more

My friend and I were looking for a spot to grab lunch near where we work and she told me about this place, as there used to be lines pre-COVID. It was even pretty busy the day we visited, with some patrons dining inside and many more getting takeout. But I thought Asia Ginger Teriyaki was just fine. Located in Pioneer Square, the space was spacious enough with tables for a few groups to dine in. During the lunch hour on a weekday, the food came out surprisingly fast, despite the line of workers waiting to get their order. The menu features many different teriyaki dishes and combinations. There were seafood and vegetarian/tofu options, but the menu is pretty straightforward for what you'd expect at a teriyaki joint. I ordered the fried rice combination, which came with beef, chicken and shrimp. The portion was large, but it was mostly because of the heaping amount of rice. Proteins were slightly overcooked, but of the bunch, I liked the shrimp the best. And of course, there were only two pieces of shrimp in the fried rice. All in all, if you're looking for a quick, takeout spot that has teriyaki and other standard Asian dishes in the Pioneer Square area then Asia Ginger Teriyaki may be your best bet. You walk in and the place is very clean and organized. I got there around 12:15-ish and it wasn't too busy. Maybe 6 in line and 4 eating. I ordered half chicken katsu and half short ribs (not an option but they were able to accommodate). I also ordered no salad, extra rice. I got my plate and they forgot and gave me salad anyway. I didn't care enough to mention it and took my L. There was way more chicken katsu than short ribs. The chicken katsu came with a sauce that was too tangy for me. The chicken katsu was decent. My only issue was that the strips were THIN, I'm talking I had a couple pieces 1 cm wide and others half that size. The short ribs was delicious but definitely burnt and definitely not a lot of meat, mainly fat on the bones. The sauces were on the side, id prefer them on the meal but still not a big deal, that's just preference. Customer service alone is a reason I'd come back. This used to be the go to teriyaki spot but with the new owners some things have changed, not for the better. The chicken now has more burnt pieces - maybe the chicken is recooked for speed now? They kept most of the sauces at the table but got rid of the red chili sauce for siracha - big no, no for a teriyaki spot. They got rid of the water station and now trying to force you to buy bottled water. And worst, they increased the prices, dramatically. The old owners had the go to Teriyaki Bowl with stir fried veggies for $7...now, that same item is $13. There's not that much inflation, sheesh. They did get a new electronic menu board, if that gets people excited? Sorry to say, but with the lower quality food and the higher prices, I'd rather walk a bit further to the other teriyaki options in the area. read more

I have been a customer of this location for about 5 years and it used to consistently good. Since the new ownership, I have experienced the quality of food to be "just ok." I really advise businesses to come here and check out to see how they got the flow down. The cooks seem to get the process down too. The wait for food is pretty decent. They always exceed my expectations. If you want a quick lunch, call your order in. It will be waiting for you by the time you arrive. My go-to spot when I'm limited on time and want something quick and easy. I usually get the chicken bowl and it comes with steamed vegetables, white rice (you can choose brown if you want to be healthy) and a decent amount of chicken. The chicken can be kinda dry sometimes. All of this for less than $7. You won't find that price anywhere in the area. What I really love about this place is that they use quality containers and utensils. Kudos on that. There was a change in ownership. The new owners have made some changes in their efforts to revamp. The kitchen and dining area have been renovated, and do look better. They simplified the menu (removed some items), no more crab rangoon, ect :( The previous owner would heap the condiments on you and unfortunately this is not so with the new ownership. I have to tell/ask/beg for any extra teriyaki sauce, every time. Same thing with the salad dressing. I suppose my biggest disappointment with the change in ownership is the salad that comes with the entrees. This used to be in a separate container- that was nice, and now they just put the salad in there with the meat. This make the salad hot and limp by the time you get to eat it, also makes the meat entrée cold/soggy. As far as Teriyaki in Seattle goes, there is a fair standard. You have the combos, with choice of meat(s), white rice, and a side salad. I usually go for chicken and beef/pork. The cuts of meat here are great. They are sometimes a little undercooked during the lunch rush, but still delicious. The portions are awesome. I'm a little underwhelmed by the teriyaki sauce included (flavor, not quantity). But I really want to talk about the salad. This place does the salad differently from any other teriyaki spot in the city, and I'm not liking it. Pickle on my salad? What is this dressing? No, the salad is no good here, and I really wish it were good. The standard Seattle teriyaki salad; ice berg lettuce, maybe a little shredded cabbage and carrot, with a that light mayo/vinegar dressing (you know the dressing I mean). Whatever Asia Ginger Teriyaki uses for their dressing, it's not the same, and that is most of the reason for the rating. The service is quick. But then there is really not place to stand/sit while you are waiting for your meal. I have a minor complaint about the to-go packaging. The have a finely tuned system to take orders, and package them to go out the door, and it is a sight to see. Very efficient. However, I don't use sriracha on my teriyaki, and don't need the two small plastic containers of it. I appreciate the two medium containers of teriyaki sauce, but maybe I would like a third. I frequently work across the street and occasionally end up here. Tip #1. If you have an office in the area or it's a nice enough day to visit the waterfall garden down the street, I recommend getting the food to-go. They have tables and chairs at the restaurant... but your office is probably much nicer and the park has a waterfall. Tip #2. They have free (and pretty good) soup next to the cashier station. I usually fill a small bowl and sip it while I wait for my to-go bag. (I mention this because I know at least one person who has been there several times and never noticed the soup container/station.) Tip #3. Definitely try the fortune cookie they give you (if you like fortune cookies)... but know that it might be stale. I've been here twice in the past few weeks and I really enjoy it. The first time I came it was pretty busy, but today I came right around 11a and I ate in, so I was in and out in about 20 or so minutes. Food - Both times I got a bowl. However, I didn't know you could "customize" them a little, so the first time I just got a chicken bowl and it was pretty plain. I did get some teriyaki dipping sauce (I believe there is a spicy teriyaki sauce that is amazing), so that helped a lot. It comes with a lot of steamed broccoli, carrots and cabbage. The first bowl I got came w/more veggies than rice. It lasted two meals. The second time I got a spicy chicken bowl w/brown rice. I thought it would be like the spicy teriyaki sauce I tried last time, but it was a REALLY SPICY ketchupy type sauce. I am a bit of a spice whimp, but my mouth was on fire and my nose was sweating, LOL. There were moments when I wanted to cry from the spicy pain, but I kept on eating cause food. Anyway, the second bowl was definitely sometime I could see myself getting from time to time. It is a HUGE portion of food that lasts two meals for me. Price is great for the amount of food you get. Service - The lady up front is really, really nice. And very patient, seeing how busy and crazy it gets with just her up front. It is madness at lunchtime. The wait can get pretty long when it's busy. The first time we stood in line and made it up to the front somewhat quickly, but the wait for food was about 20 minutes or so. I think they take a lot of phone in orders, so that takes a lot of time. I would suggest going early or calling in. But if you have to wait, there is an assortment of goodies you can snack on, or I think you can anyway, LOL. Miso soup, chips and candy. I mean, I saw other people just grabbing and eating them. I've been coming here for a couple years because it is only two blocks from my work. The prices are extremely fair and the food is great. I've tried almost everything on the menu from spicy chicken teriyaki, yakisoba, fried rice, gyoza, etc. It's all good and the portions are generous. A great thing about this place is that she serves free soup! What could be better than sitting down to wait for your food and enjoying a bowl of homemade soup. I've been here enough times to know that she changes up the type of soup frequently and it's always good. Sometimes, if you're really nice and it's not too busy, the owner will hand-deliver a free plate of gyoza while you are waiting. She really knows how to treat the customers. When I used to work in Pioneer Square (and even nowadays when I routinely make the trek up North to visit our Seattle office), this was one of my most frequented favorite lunch spots. The gal behind the register (*methinks she's part-owner) is freakin' lightning fast and uber-attentive. If you're a regular, she gets to know your order, punches it into the cash register and it's often times delivered before you're expecting it. I used to work pretty close to here, and this was a regular take-out lunch for me. After I left that job, I even made a point once or twice to come back. The first time I came in, I looked at the menu. They had a variation of teriyakis, but the one that jumped out to me was the spicy chicken. I usually like beef, but I thought to myself, why not go with a leaner meat this time, plus, it's supposed to be spicy! From this point forward, my experience at this place has not varied from the first time I went to the handful of times, years later, that I went out of my way to come back and experience it again. I give my order to the woman at the counter. "Spicy chicken to go, please." She relays it to the cook in back: "Spicy chicken!". She pulls out a plastic bag, puts it flat and open on the counter, pulls out a salad and a couple cups of dressing, puts them in the bag, pushes it aside. She takes my debit card, swipes it, prints a receipt. I sign it, she spindles it. I step aside. The next person orders. Some time later, my teriyaki comes out of the kitchen. She closes it, puts it in the bag, throws in chopsticks, napkins, and a plastic fork. She ties the bag shut and makes eye contact. She remembers whose spicy chicken is whose. "Spicy chicken!" The incredible thing about this system is that it's always the same woman, and she always does this faster and more methodically than I thought any human being was capable of processing teriyaki orders. When I came back, long after leaving the job, I was actually surprised to find that she was even faster than I'd remembered. Very rarely in my life have I ever met anyone who was as dedicated to, and good at, their job as this woman is. One day I came in later than usual, and the place was going slowly. So the woman at the counter took the time to ask my opinion about whether the spicy chicken was spicy enough. I responded that it definitely was. One thing that's either a small flaw or an amusing quirk, depending on your perspective. There are two entrances. One is just an ordinary front entrance. The other entrance comes in from a parking lot, and leads through a questionable-looking-and-smelling corridor into the restaurant. So to my surprise, this place was not half bad. I had the standard chicken terriyaki and to my surprise, you can order it with brown rice. I think it is was an extra 25 cents for it. The portions was a good size and the cost ($5.95) was at par. You do get free soup which is self serve. It was some sort of hot an sour soup when we went but my coworker claims it is typically miso. The chicken was one thing that kept it from being good terriyaki. It was dry like it was over cooked. It was marinated nicely though. I will have to come back to give them another chance but I think this is what you get since they are very busy during the lunch rush. Just your typical teriyaki joint in the heart of Seattle. I've eaten here several times. It works a good backup place for me to eat in case I can't find anything that I want. The restaurant is nice and clean. The place is pretty popular during lunch time as it seems to be one of the few teriyaki restaurants in this neighborhood. The people manning the counter are very friendly and helpful. The menu consisted of the usual teriyaki goodies (i.e. chicken teriyaki, prok teriyaki, chicken katsu, etc.). But they also serve udon here. I have yet to try it. The teriyaki here was decent. Nothing to rant and rave about. And I would rant and rave if I could. Nothing particularly special about the food. With all that said I still go there. And if you want teriyaki give the place a shot. I doubt you'll be disappointed. read more

I happen to work right next to this place and I've become such a fan. What they do that makes them stand out so much is that every single thing that you order is going to be delicious and healthy portioned. I have actually tried to order something that I would not normally order and I have been surprised by how good it tastes. Other positives I have noticed about this place: -The portions are very healthy. You will NOT leave hungry! -The lady that always works behind the register is one hard-worker! I'm always impressed by how friendly and fast she works every time I come in - never skipping a beat. -They even go as detailed as to putting lemons in the water and having hundreds of to-go sauce containers that we can choose from - without extra fees! The only thing that semi-bugs me is when I order to-go. Some of their dishes can be very saucey and the to-go containers are pretty flimsy so unless you eat from the box soon after you buy it, I've noticed that the food can get pretty messy. Warning: I usually come in after 1 pm because I know how busy it does get. Makes sense since their dishes are amazing.
