Came here for dinner, based on the proximity to Lackland AFB, and the reviews. I'm glad we did, because the food was solid. With a name like Asia Kitchen and so much variety on the menu, I thought it would be a case of doing nothing well, but I'm so happy to be disappointed. We ordered an appetizer of spring rolls. You have the choice of 6 or 12; we went with 6, but ended up with 12. A "dining guide" at the bottom of the menu states that everything is made upon order so that food is fresh and hot. Well, they aren't wrong. Every single roll was piping hot and delicious. My husband ordered the beef fried rice, i ordered the Thai eggplant, and his uncle ordered the combination pad Thai. Like the spring rolls, my food was piping hot and delicious (the sauce was a touch too saucy, but when eaten with the rice, it's not as noticeable). There wasn't too much basil in the dish that it overpowered the taste of the eggplant. The fried rice was kinda wet, like it had a light coating of sauce. My husband didn't like it, but I found it to be quite delicious. Had i not been as distracted by my own meal, I would have gladly dove into his headfirst. The pad Thai was also really good, lightly sweet without being too much. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the meat perfectly complemented the flavor of the sauce. There could have been more meat, especially shrimp, but my uncle wasn't at all disappointed. If you're looking for good Asian food, this is your place. Don't let the location in the strip mall turn you off, because this place is worth it. read more

We decided to go for Valentine's Day lunch & we really had an enjoyable time. The staff all wore masks, the tables were cleaned off before we sat down and overall the place was very welcoming. I ordered the Takara Plum wine and enjoyed it with my meal. I ordered a lunch combo of ginger chicken & stir fried vegetables with steamed rice & a spring roll. The chicken was tender & tasty and all the vegetables were yummy! My spouse had the sesame chicken with white meat, sauce over the meat & fried rice with an egg roll. He said it was very good. Asia Kitchen is a quaint family owned and operated restaurant on the far end of the San Antonio Marketplace on 410, opposite end from the Goodwill. They primarily serve American-Thai dishes and offer an affordable lunch special during the week where they pile up your plate with food. I came here on a weekday during the lunch rush with 4 other coworkers. We were seated immediately and got our drinks orders taken not too long after. We all selected off the limited lunch special menu and waited an appropriate amount of time before our food came out. I got the chicken key mao which came in a very light almost translucent colored sauce. It was tasty, but a bit on the bland side, so I added the chili oil that was on the table. The first spoonful didn't do anything but add some more flavor, but it wasn't until I added 2-3 more that the heat started to hit. Still minor, but now I know what levels I'm working with when it comes to ordering again. The service was good, the food was alright, and overall the experience was decent. read more

UPDATE, June 16, 2019. My father passed away 9 years ago. Up until today I had not been back to Asia Kitchen since the day I took him to eat there the week before he passed away. Today, to celebrate him on Father's Day, I allowed my youngest son to take me their and buy my wife and me dinner. I was truly surprised by how much had stayed the same. The only thing that seemed different was the staff. I did not recognize any of them. I did recognize the same excellent service that I always got when eating there with my dad. I ordered one of my old favorites, pad woon sen with beef. It was exactly as I remembered except that the portion I was served seemed a bit larger than I remember. I also had an egg roll. It was deliciously crisp and loaded with fresh flavorful things inside. Now that enough time has passed, I am sure I will be eating here more often again. *********************************************************************************************************** This is my original review, as I think the updates replace them nowadays: This restaurant is a favorite of my parents and their friends. I have been going there with my parents since it opened way back when. Before Mom passed away, they were going there to eat about twice a week. Now, Dad eats there almost every day but Sundays, since it is closed Sundays, much to his chagrin. All the people there call him by name. They know that he wants unsweetened tea with no ice. They know what dishes he will usually order and how he likes them prepared. Every time we get back in the car, Dad says, "Those ladies take really good care of me." I have to agree with him. The staff at Asia Kitchen is, and has always been, wonderful. The food is very good. I have tried many items and have yet to be disapointed. I can vouch for all of the soups and most of the curries. My favorite soup is the beef noodle soup with its rich dark broth. My favorite curry is the catfish with coconut milk in the sauce. The catfish nuggets are fried so delicately, I couldn't believe it. They were crispy, but you could barely even see or taste the coating that was used. The sauce they were in was awesome. I asked for medium spice, which was enough for me most of the time and too much on a few bites. Dad is a fan of several things including the pad thai, vegetable fried rice, pineapple fried rice, and king sod he calls ginger chicken. Mom's favorite was the Yum Gai (chicken salad). It is a lettuce based salad topped with small chicken pieces. The dressing on it is a chile/lime type of thing. It comes with white rice, which I use to soak up the extra dressing. It is so good. You can have almost the same salad with squid or beef. Anyway, go and give it a try for yourself. I think you will like it. Just don't go on any weekday for lunch unless you like crowds! It is packed for lunch. Update 6/5/10-- Now that Dad is not driving, I take him to Asia Kitchen every day. I have tried some more things that I have to spread the word on. First, the pad woonsen is a great dish of glass noodles stir fried with bean sprouts, onion, mushrooms, broccoli and your choice of chicken, beef, pork, or vegetables. It is amazing!!!!!! Also, the papaya salad is really great. It is made from shredded green papaya that is mixed with garlic, dried shrimp, and a lime chili sauce. read more

Beyond their stellar food and service, they are very clean and super cocos conscious. Temperatures are taken upon entry and sanitizer offered to every patron. I continue to be impressed at every visit and because of that I'll guarantee I'm returning again and again! The fact that you can order "combo" plates of the lunch specials is very unique. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very welcoming and relaxing. We enjoyed the friendly and attentive service from Emma, our waitress. You can just order to go which is what I did!! I think on certain night they have a little band there for music which I think is cute. Food was fresh, service was fast and friendly, servings were large enough for us to have leftovers for a second meal. Our dishes (combo pad thai and tofu panang curry) were spiced as expected. We asked for medium level, and it was enough to make our noses run a little, with just enough heat to let us know it was there, without overwhelming the flavor of the food. Mostly I want to congratulate this restaurant on doing so well with current COVID-19 restrictions. They had signs posted at every table, making sure expectations were clear. We dined in at a time when restrictions had recently been increased, after being relaxed for a few weeks, but our server (Celeste) remained cheerful and matter-of-fact about having to take our temperatures, wearing gloves and mask, using hand sanitizer, etc -- all those things that restaurant workers are now doing to keep themselves and their customers safe. It's difficult and confusing for everybody, yet Celeste made us feel at ease, and other businesses could learn from the example set here. read more

Where do I begin.....first we were seated directly across from the restroom. I'd say the restroom was about 5 feet from our table so we could smell the restroom. You know that so-called clean odor when they use deodorizers to "mask" the true smell. We stare blankly at the waitress because as a customer that really shouldn't be something you tell us. Whatever the situation is behind closed doors, fix it. Don't tell us. Now for the food. We ordered fried spring rolls, lemon chicken and vegetable pad see eww. Spring rolls were good. Lemon chicken by itself was not bad but the lemon sauce had a strange after taste that I wasn't fond of and was like water. The vegetable pad see eww was the biggest disappointment of them all. For starters it had had huge chunks of zucchini and yellow squash which in my experience with pad see eww has never been a vegetable in pad see eww and felt like a cheap vegetable filler. Lastly the pad see eww was dry and had a strange old pan burnt taste to it. I write reviews on here frequently and I really don't enjoy posting bad reviews on mom and pop places like this but it was really bad. The worst part of it all was the waitress was not engaged and inattentive. She seemed bothered by anything we asked for such as sriracha sauce or more water to help swallow the dry pad see eww. Finally to end this whole charade of a sad dinner, the wait staff has a device to take card payments and they stand right there and take your card to pay and ask assuming your gonna leave a fat tip, "will you be leaving the tip on the card or cash"....now we are big tippers and to ask customers assuming you are getting a good tip for your horrible service is rude for one and uncomfortable for the customer. I'm a 'charter' customer. Knew the founder and even helped him with some small item work as he was opening the business in the late 1980's. I've always rated other Thai restaurants by comparing them to Asia Kitchen, and have never had better tasting or fresher Thai food than Asia Kitchen serves. Simply the best. This place is located across the street from Payless. Their lunch specials are pretty dang good. They have options for choosing one dish and it comes with a spring roll and iced tea for $6.50 or choose from two plates mix it up and get two spring rolls and iced tea for $7.50. The portions are out of this world. I ordered the shrimp Woon Sen. the spring roll could have had a bit more flavor, but the woon den was tasty. It has a slight peanut taste and I squeezed lime on it for a tangy kick. This meal could feel about a size of three people if we are going by actual serving sizes. I love the glass noodles and they are gluten free :) would love to return to try the Pad Thai. read more

I guess I've never written a review for this place that I've been coming to for years. This was always my go to place for soup but I have no idea what is going on as of late. They are really skimping on ingredients in their soup. Today I ordered Gaeng Jued Taohoo soup and got a container of chicken broth with one shrimp, three tiny meatballs and skinny slices of fish cake. I attached a photo of how they use to make the soup. I'm livid. Last time I ate there I had to send my Poh-Taek soup back because they forgot the Thai basil and galangal. I never send back items because I feel bad but this was just so careless. Is it a new chef? Is it someone just losing their love of cooking? Is it owners wanting to cut corners? Who knows? All I know is I'm starting to doubt this place I've been coming to for over 10 years. They have an answering machine so I called and left a message. I guess we will see if they respond. I told them I noticed the quality of food has been on a decline and for what they charge for the soup I think I deserve more than one shrimp. This place serves the most delicious Tom yum soup and pad Thai I've ever had and I'm an avid traveler/foodie. They use quality ingredients and the flavors are consistent every time I come. They've been around forever and the food is exactly the same as it was when I first came 25+ years ago. I've had my share of Tom Yum soups around the world. Locally, many of the other places use cheap and filler ingredients. Asia Kitchen's version is so filling and delicious with the absolute best and top ingredients that I don't mind paying 15+ for a large bowl. It's enough for 4 of us to share. They have an amazing lunch special as well that comes with a drink and egg roll for around $8. The only criticism I have is that the furniture is the same as it has been since the 90's and the service can be so-so. This is a must-stop place for me every fine I'm in town. read more

This restaurant is a staple for the neighborhood and their food is always excellent! Their waitstaff seem somewhat disconnected! One feels you can't ask them for water 'cuz it seems as an inconvenience to them. When we went, it was crowded...and it was a little warm and it would have been perfect if they had had all three fans working instead of just one! They just seemed overwhelmed when we went. They have been there for quite a long time and their reputation for great food supersedes any negative reputation they may get.
