The food here is not bad, it is actually above average at least. However, like a lot of Yelpers said, the portion is kind of small, and it does cost a few bucks more. While Asian Box serves Asian fusion food, it serves more of a combination of American fusion Vietnamese food. For example, the noodles they use in their boxes do share very, very similar textures to the ones in Vietnamese noodles, such as Bon Bo Hue. Their caramel egg is really good though, soft boiled and flavored beautifully. However, for the price I am paying for the amount of food I'm getting, most Vietnamese restaurants can definitely provide more portion with similar taste. Everything is gluten free! One of the employees told me that they don't bring anything that contains gluten into the restaurant which is really nice to hear. I went with my husband who is not gluten free and my daughters. They got kids bowls, one chicken and one tofu. The tofu had the coconut sauce on it which was great but my daughter took a bite and started crying because it was spicy. But when I asked for a new bowl they quickly brought one with no sauce. The tofu was crunchy so had an unusual texture but my daughter liked it. The chicken and rice bowl was good and my other daughter ate quite a bit of it. They are 4 and 2 and next time plan on only getting one bowl for them to share. I got the chicken with everything on it. It was great and the only thing I wouldn't get again next time is the jalapeno, although my husbang got those and loved it. It is like an asian chipolte (I love chipolte) except they were happier to see me then the chipolte staff and I noticed they welcomeded everyone who walked in the door with a loud, "WELCOME TO ASIAN BOX!" The seating is minimal but we went there for dinner and had no trouble having a seat in the back. It is a little strange there is only one large table in back. Ordered three boxes to go. Halfway to the parking lot the bottom drops out of my bag and I have three boxes distributed all over the parking lot. It's a bummer that they felt like saving a few cents on a bag (crazy thin paper) was worth jeopardizing my lunch. I called the shop and Alex offered to remake my food if I came back in. A) a lunch hour is only an hour and at least some of that hour has to be spent eating the food not watching it get made twice. He also said if I came back another time they would comp a meal. I'll be back sometime around when hell freezes over and if so it will be a different Asian Box location. Perfectly good place on Castro if you're looking for a quick (healthy-ish) bite. One thing kind of struck me as odd though. In my indecision I just picked one of the recommended boxes. As I was waiting for my food, I was still just gazing at the menu, doing some mental math, and realized that the price for the box I got is actually higher than if I were to place that exact same order through the normal ordering system. I wouldn't really expect a discount for ordering one of their recommended boxes, but also wouldn't expect to be charged more. I asked the cashier about it, and she got a little bit defensive stating that the math works out the same. After breaking down the arithmetic to her the manager came by and admitted that it was just something weird with the pricing and that she had noticed but couldn't really explain why it was like that. Of course, it was only a 5 cent difference so certainly not something worth throwing a fuss over - maybe $7.95 just sounds more appealing to a consumer than $7.90, but what do I know. read more

I've been to the Asian Box several times for lunch. Oh my goodness! Fresh, spicey and tasty. I love the Ginger Soda.... One of my favorites. It's a little pricey but I had plenty of food to comfort me. I sat outside near the road and watched the passersby. It was peaceful. Great place to stop if you have time for a delicious meal. This is my second time here and this time I got the Asian salad with chicken. Was really tasty and loved the added shallots and caramelized boiled egg. I wasn't too impressed with the large amount of lettuce and not much of other types of greens and veggies. Was expecting a medley of goodness. Unfortunately that's what doesn't make it amazing for me. It is a little pricey here. About $10 a salad box. Nice place to eat though and great customer service. I've eaten at this restaurant twice... the first time I got a noodle box with chicken, non fish sauce and asian street dust and it gave me the runs. Thought I'd give it one more try because it was supposed to be a quick meal.. I went back with two toddlers and a friend. We both ordered two kids meals with beef and noodle boxes with beef. We waited and waited and waited, until 30 minutes later we still hadn't received our food. I went up to the counter and another patron said that there was a mix up with the beef and that's why no food was coming out. WELL, if that was case why didn't someone say that 10,15,20 min ago?? and suggest that we try something else on the menu. I went up to the counter and asked for our money back. The owner/manager (I recognized one of them in the kitchen because he has a child the same age as me) just stood there watching the scene unfold instead of coming up and apologizing for the mix up. Then the girl working the other register had the audacity to chime in that they were short staffed. Excuse me?? this isn't a full service establishment sweet heart. There are two people manning the register, a grill cook, prep cook and two managers talking it up on the side... Short staffed, I don't think so. There was NO apology, NO compensation for their lack of customer service. I'm shocked that this is the type of service an owner/manager is willing to observe in their own restaurant. It had so much promise. The "gluten-free" selling point caught my eye. I was so excited to customize my "box" but what I ended up with was not so exciting. First, I would caution to get the sauce on the side. I thought the non-oil fish sauce was like the sauce you get at Vietnamese restaurants, but it was very strong and salty. I ordered the lime basil shrimp, but it came in a dark, yet-again-salty dark sauce. And I thought I went wild by ordering all the toppings sans jalapeño slices (which is way too hot for me). However, the box came a little empty with maybe 4 crispy shallots, 20 stalks of bean sprouts (kind of in different corners, edges of the box), lots of pickled vegetables, nary a peanut. read more

I could cry so refreshing so tasty! How did my app never show me the SF location??? Before I head back home to the east bay, I'm grabbing some more food for dinner(or lunch tomorrow) One plate, really stuffed and I didn't even have any rice. I love that I didn't need to get rice. Came here for the first time last night & I am now a huge fan of this place!! First of all, the restaurant is 100% gluten free - there is no chance of cross contamination here. That is a HUGE plus in my book! Don't think for one second though that being gluten free means bland or boring food. Try this place out and I'm sure you won't notice any difference if you're a gluten-eater. The ordering process is very easy and super easy to customize. I chose brown rice as my base, with the lemongrass marinated pork, added all the toppers except for the caramel egg (although I probably should have tried it in hindsight), and got the Miss Jones' Sriracha sauce. My box was delicious!! Definitely had a big kick to it (I did have jalapeno's as one of the toppers too though). Sometimes I'm disappointed with the lack of spice at some Asian food restaurants, but that was not the case here! It was the perfect level of spicy for me. I don't frequent Mountain View or Palo Alto very often (they've got another location across from Stanford University), but I just might have to start so that I can get my Asian Box fix. I would love it if they opened up a location in Santa Clara (near the new 49er stadium perhaps?) or Campbell! Last thought - I love how environmentally conscientious they are here! Everything is compostable and they are working to try to get the city of Mountain View to start composting too which is pretty cool. read more

I like Spice Kit on California Ave a lot better because it offers the same food in roll or banh mi form, and also has more creative side dishes. I think Asian Box is convenient for a quick meal on the go, which is a rarity on Castro St. I've tried a few different sauces and meats and my favorite combo is peanut sauce on chicken with all of the veggie toppings and the egg. The siracha sauce is mind numbingly spicy and nearly killed me so unless you like spicy stuff, steer clear! read more

This place was fresh, fast, and friendly. The folks in the kitchen and the cashier greeted us warmly. My husband got the tofu curry and I got the lemongrass pork, both with brown rice. The rice is short grain, which I love because it soaks up all the sauce. The side of veggies was delicious. My only critique is that the food could have been served a little warmer. It seemed like one of the toppings (or maybe the sauce) had been refrigerated and brought the temperature of the whole meal down. They weren't busy and I saw them cook it up right in front of me so I know it wasn't sitting there getting cold. Really not a huge deal since the food was incredibly flavorful. i have been waiting impatiently for Asian Box to come to Mountain View since I heard about and started visiting their flagship restaurant in Palo Alto. I'm so happy they finally opened so I can enjoy healthy, delicious, completely Gluten-free asian food whenever I want it. I know that many people can go to many cheap Chinese, Vietnamese etc. restaurants all over the Bay Area, but since I have to eat gluten free because I have Celiac disease my options are usually limited to PF Chang's. I enjoy PF Chang's (although have to eat pescetarian there because they have no decent gluten-free vegetarian options), but I have been longing for a less pricey, more casual option for a long time. Asian Box fits the bill perfectly. I first fell in love with their tofu with peanut sauce dish on rice. I love this combination, especially with extra fresh-herbs (they are a little skimpy with the fresh herbs for my taste, considering it is vietnamese cuisine). I do think they may have changed the original recipe a little to make it more spicy, and a more green color, at least the last time I tried it. I think I may have slightly preferred the original recipe I first had at Palo Alto. However, I did branch out and tried the shrimp with asian salad and I loved it! At the host's suggestion I asked for it with the same curry sauce they use on the tofu and it was so yummy that way. I wasn't that wild about the shrimp option the first time I tried it (With noodles and tamarind sauce), but with the curry sauce it was awesome. I see what another reviewer means about the "weird" butterflied shrimp, but I thought they were nice and big and tasted great. I think that they have balanced things out with portion size. Initially Palo Alto diners on Yelp complained that there wasn't enough food, especially rice/starch in the meals, and then they seemed to increase the volume a little too much. Now the portions seem perfect. (This is pretty subjective though.) I notice they have a kid's menu, which is probably a good thing. My 3 year old daughter usually loves spring rolls but didn't care for theirs and the peanut sauce was way too spicy for her.* Note 7/2- seems like they have tamed down the peanut sauce a bit, which is a good thing. I will order off the kid's menu next time. She ate some of her daddy's chicken dish with rice, and that was a better fit for her kid's taste buds. I am so happy that Asian Box has come to mountain view and know that I will be visiting often. This place hits the spot! I like the bigger size of the restaurant in Mountain View, and the more numerous tables, more than the small Palo Alto location as well, which is a bonus. Staff are always friendly and so are the chefs- I just hope it gets a little more popular at dinner time because when we visited a week after opening for an early dinner, it was very quiet. I hear lunch time is (deservedly) hopping, though! Hopes that they succeed brilliantly and spread all over the Bay Area and beyond so I can get a box of yummy and healthy food wherever I am. Sometimes the portion of asian slaw is rather skimpy. I really like the balance of crunchy cabbage and Some carrot (but not all carrot) and hope they can keep up with demand and make sure that we get more crunchy goodness in our box, and not just a big pile of meat (As I had at a recent visit). The last two times I've come to Asian Box, I was disappointed with the meager portions of veggies (stir fried) added to the box. The first time was particularly silly, with about 2 pieces of broccoli added. I asked for additional veggies and they nicely accommodated. I thought it was a fluke, but the last time I went again there was a small portion of veggies in my box. I will have to ask for extra veggies in the future. I hope you will return to having generous veggie portions, as frankly, I always thought that was one of the nicest things about your boxes. Many restaurants will load their patrons up with starch and meat, but it is harder to find a place to really enjoy tasty and flavorful (gluten-free) veggies along with protein! read more

I tried a salad box with shrimp, and it was pretty good. The "salad" is more like cabbage, but the dressing they give you makes it taste really good. The portion is a bit small, but I think if you got the rice or noodle box it would be a lot more filling. Bad bad bad. I took a box with noodles, chicken and peanut sauce. Everything was not warm enough especially the sauce. The chicken is the same then at chipotle, seems like it has been dipped in fat. I don't understand that chicken could have big fat pieces on it, It's one of the less fat meet that exist. Not even sure that it's chicken. The peanut sauce tasted good but was cold. The only thing that I found ok was the piece of broccoli. So sad I spent 10$ on a very low quality cold meal. read more

Honestly, it was too spicy for me, and I had to eat some humble pie and ask the friendly staff if there was anything they could do to accommodate this pour soul.
