Ok so I no the ppl who run this joint lol my husband n daughter lives this place. They have great food I grew up eating this kind of food so I can tell if that's how it's suppose to taste. On cold rainy days or even a hang over :-P always order the kao piek sien ( white thick flour noodles with chicken and they have pork bloods to add to it but I pass I'll stick with chicken lol. Or the beef pho. (vermicelli clear noodles) love how they make they're broth for the soup don't really need to add anything accept for the peppers and the veggies They're appetizers are pretty good Always or they're fried chicken wings with sticky rice (my daughter n husband favorite) Egg rolls are ok they only have the pork ones which I don't really eat pork Stuffed chicken wings was awsome only came with 2 but they were pretty big. First time trying Lao's food. It is tucked away in a neighborhood across from a school? I shared a big bowl of Kaopoon and angel wings and it was both very delicious! I would give it a 5 stars for the kaopoon if it came out hot. It came out luke warm which was really weird. We came here to try it out. It is in a very rundown area and in a not so great area in North Sac. We had a couple soups and a pad thai. The soups were ok at best and the pad thai was nothing special. The best item I had was the iced coffee. The reason for the 1 star is the owner charged us for shrimp when my daughter got chicken. It was $2-3 more for the shrimp and I feel the owner did it on purpose to pad their bottom line. We were the ONLY ones dining at that time inside so it wasn't likely for it to slip her mind. My second time since the last time I've been there, maybe 6 years now. But the main downfall was ordering papaya and the portion was very small on a very big plate. For the taste wise, it wasn't bad at all I'll give it a 3.5/5. My sister got one of the beef rice plate and the portion was as well disappointing. Very little meat but she did said it does taste good. Just not fulfilling for the price of $9. Also ordered Kasoy and Kapoon both medium size. They're not bad the portion was decent. This is my second time eating at the restaurant under the new management and I have to say... I am really disappointed. So, I called in to order a Vegetarian fried rice and Khao Piek Sen the other day and was told it would take about 20mins. Thought it was strange how it would take that long for just two simple items but it was fine. When I went in to pick up my order, the place was completely empty and now I understand why. The food is completely over priced, especially for a hole in the wall. My total for the order of the "Veg" Fried rice and Khao Piek Sen came to about $21 and I was just baffled. The Vegetarian Fried Rice was $11 had just broccoli, carrots and onions. There really wasn't any taste to it other than the sweetness of the onions. Only good thing was that it was a huge portion of rice and carrots. Tasty lol. And for the Khao Piek Sen was $9 & the broth was really bland and they did provide chili oil but it didn't help the broth at all. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Highly disappointed in the food. I ordered a couple dishes that tasted old or not well prepared. I've been to multiple Laos/Vietnamese/ Thai places and this is by far the worst. Papaya wasn't freshly sliced, pad Thai was soggy, Laos sausage taste rotten and the pho tasted old. Watered down Thai tea. It was almost unbelievable and make sure to check your receipt because they overcharged me. The prices on the menu were different price on my check which they corrected in the end. Where do I even begin? Ever since the new ownership, this place has gone way downhill in terms of food quality. Service: We ordered over the phone and they told us it would take 20 minutes. So, 20 minutes later, we show up to pick up our food only to realize it would take them another 20 minutes. WTH? And then the real kicker: the food was absolutely horrible. It is a shame that they even call themselves a Lao restaurant because this is just horrendous. Food: We ordered the following: Beef larb - poor quality beef paired with a chef who doesn't know what the heck to put in larb equates to crappy larb. There were no veggies, no peppers, and no roasted rice powder (that is the HALLMARK of larb, people). It was just greasy ground beef. Papaya salad - I think the cook had lotion on when they made this dish because all you could smell was lotion in this dish. How off putting and for that reason, I couldnt' even stomach this dish. Nam Khao - Man, soggy fried rice that was probably sitting out and fried earlier that day. What a shame. Meatballs - So not flavorful at all; they forgot salt when they mixed this batch of meatballs. God, help them. Price vs. Value: We ordered multiples of some dishes, so our bill came up to $90++ for crappy food. It was the WORST Lao food I have ever had and that is a crying shame for this country's cuisine. I will definitely NOT be coming back and if you know what's good for you, neither will you. Argh! We ordered three dishes: papaya salad, pad see eiw, and beef larb. All three dishes were terrible, especially the papaya salad which we ended up tossing away after giving it a taste. The pad Thai was flavorless, pad kee Mao noodle tastes old and dry with no flavor, papaya salad too sour, kapoon no flavor no meat, same for the kapiak, the larb was salty, Lao sausage was dry. Wow.. Asian Cafe is da Best. They have 54 items on the menu and we had just three of them, #9 Pad Thai Noodles, #7 Stuff Chicken Wings, and #49 Larb. The three items were so damn good that I have no qualms about giving AC the top rating. AC is in a no traffic depressed strip mall in an out-of-the-way neighborhood not very close to the freeway.. but it is still worth a trip. The quality of the various dishes makes this an odd "destination restaurant." One star for ambience, but because of the food this place rates Five. Yeah! When we ordered, Koony (sounds like Kuni) askes me how hot we want the Larb. I say "Oh about "medium" is good." OOohOO... maybe I should have said, make it mild. When the larb came, it had at least a couple of these tiny little red Thai peppers, all chopped up (pic of one of these little babies is included), that scorched (incinerated) my mouth and made me drink large quantities of ice water only to sweat it out continuously throughout the meal. But I continued on..just about when the fire was out, upon having the now lukewarm noodles it seemed to set my mouth on Fire anew. Oh but it was so good, it was like the Torture of the 2010 Giants. It answers the question How good can it get? Koony and his mom operate the business and their relative owns and operates the South Area Market on Fruitridge. I went to this place yesterday with my boyfriend and my siblings. I know the owners of this place, but I've never eaten at their restaurant before. I finally tried it out and I gotta say..it was BOMB! I am reviewing this in the most unbiased way. I'm a big critic of kapoon. Their kapoon was on point. The first bite, I tasted something different. It was very unique! They use a different type of coconut milk and it was delicious! I literally killed mine. Haha portions are big in their noodles too. I also ordered the eggrolls. Omg, their eggrolls were so good! They're not skimpy on their meat inside and it was mixed perfectly! My boyfriend ordered their seafood noodle soup and he even said it almost compares to our hometown's noodle. Coming from him, that's a huge plus! My brother ordered the raw larb and noodle. For some reason, I was willing to try their raw larb because everything else was so good. And if you know me, I don't eat ANYTHING RAW! On top of that, my brother said he'd do 100 push-ups if I ate it. Haha so I took on the challenge. After trying it, it wasn't too bad...but I probably still won't eat anything raw since I'm such a germ freak. My sister in law also ordered their papaya salad...ON POINT as well! This is honestly insulting lol, my boyfriend is Laotian and he was really offended.. he said "I don't taste the culture in this" which is weird because he was the one that recommended it and picked it up for me! But I think ever since they opened back up, they are owned by other people now? Idk. But you can even see it lacks in so much, from color, to consistency of the soup.. right down to the flavor, that is completely watered down lol. This is one of my all time favorite dishes, so full of flavor and just perfect! But save your money and go somewhere else. The good: Portions are generous, prices reasonable, service was friendly and attentive, and everything was obviously fresh-made to order. If you like hidden gems and authentic thai cuisine, this is the place for you. Ever since our friends recommended this place, we've been coming here at least twice a month for the past 4 months now. The food and service has been awesome, even though there could be a little bit of wait time but it is well worth it. We love just about everything on their menu, from appetizer meatballs to noodle soups to pad thai, larb, chow fun and rice plates. If you're in a hurry, please call in ahead of time so by the time you get there, your food will be ready. Especially during lunch/rush hour, call ahead for your order. Decided to try this place on our way out of town. Hole in the wall restaurant with plenty of parking. We ordered everything Med hot spice level which was the right amount of burn for us. Papaya salad laos style: I really liked it. Right amount of sweet, salty, and stinky. =P Cucumber salad laos style: 1st time I've tried it and I could pass. I think if the cucumber was sliced bigger, seeds were removed and the dish was the same size as the papaya salad... I might order it again. Larb laos style, cooked med well: good flavor, light on the tripe, little dry because it was med/well. I would order it again in a heartbeat but with extra tripe. Laos sausage: delicious! Angel Chicken wing: it was ok compared to others. Sticky rice: enough for 2 people Beef jerky: we were given samples and loved it. Bought 2 packages to take with us. Family owned shop in an oddly placed shopping center. I thought my GPS was leading me to a house rather than the shop, since it's not on a main road but right next to homes. I came here mainly to try the Laos dishes, but they also had a bit of Thai dishes on their menu. I ended up ordering the Stuffed Chicken Wings and Kao Poon to share. The portions were HUGE. Even though you only get 2 pieces of wings, it really is enough for 2 because it's so large. Flavors were great and the chicken was crispy, just the way it should be! When the Kao Poon came out, you could already smell the curry sauce they had in it. It includes rice noodles, shredded pork, and pork blood. We also added 3 pieces of shrimp for $1.50 extra...quite expensive on that front. I really enjoyed the flavors of the curry soup since it wasn't too thick or heavy like I thought it'd be. The only thing is my soup didn't come out hot, but rather warm. And there were tons and tons of noodles that were not portioned out well to the amount of meat they'd given us. Asian Cafe is one of my favorite places in Sacramento! I recently realized that Laotian/Lao foods are among my favorite comfort foods, and very few places in Sacramento have any. When I lived in the bay area, there were a few restaurants in Oakland that had a full menu of Lao cuisine. Their ka poon is my go to. It's a red curry and coconut milk soup with chicken and thick rice noodles, and it's delicious. Reminds me of the food an old girlfriend introduced me to! The papaya salad and beef larb are also items I regularly get here. I read somewhere online recently that the difference between Lao and Thai restaurants' sticky rices are that Lao places have it fresh and Thai places just package servings at the beginning of the day or even the day before, leaving it hard by the time it's served. Last time I ate at a Thai restaurant and ordered sticky rice, I found this to be true, as mine was almost inedible. However, at Asian Cafe, their sticky rice is always hot and just the right texture! In addition to the consistently good food, the service here is also consistently good. The staff are friendly, attentive, and welcoming, and it's family operated and owned as well. I've seen other users knock Asian Cafe for their location, but I have never had a problem at all here. A place like this could thrive in midtown with a few tweaks. Besides, I come here for the food. Discovered this hidden gem on my way to South-East Asian BBQ down the road. This area is pretty darn seedy, so be forewarned. That being said definitely check this place out! I got chicken larp, papaya/cucumber salad, stuffed chicken wings, and thai tea. The larp had a few meat choices- I choose chicken because it had chicken skin in it, yum! We ordered it medium spicy, which was perfect. We took the papaya salad up a notch and got it spicy. Poor boyfriend was guzzling milk after... :( It was delicious nevertheless. The stuffed chicken wings were O.K., probably would order something different next time. The thai tea was about the same caliber as the chicken wings. The service was unexpectedly excellent! It lacked something but I couldn't put my finger on it. And to top everything off. The waitress didn't by to check up on us at all which meant no water refills either. My buddy and I stumbled onto this place on the way out of town after attending an NCAA basketball tournament game. It was about 2:30 p.m. and we were the only two people in the restaurant. The owner, Patrick, couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. We weren't in a particular hurry, and when we asked him what he'd recommend, he proceeded to show us photos of 12 or 15 dishes and explained each one. I ended up ordering a sort of basil beef dish and my friend ordered broccoli chicken. We also had a somewhat watery soup containing bits of vegetables and a few shrimp. All of it was pretty good. My friend particularly enjoyed his. What made the experience most enjoyable was Patrick himself. He's very outgoing, talkative and humorous. He also went out of his way to see that we were happy and satisfied. The restaurant itself won't win any awards for decor or fanciness, but I can certainly recommend it. read more
