The service was great and the 2 of us still ended up with a bunch of leftovers! Yes, my negatives of this place still stands ... it is in a shady neighborhood, it's cash only, and the place doesn't always look the cleanest -- but man, once you realize that these kind of places don't exist everywhere, you come to realize what you had. The new owner was very nice and friendly when I went to go pick up my food. I ordered the khao poon, egg rolls, and angels wings. The quality and flavors was good. FYI the khao poon came with pigs blood which I thought was optional, because most places don't have it in their khao poon. But it wasn't a big deal, I just didn't eat that part. So I've been to this place twice now under the new management and I'm a bit heart broken. The food just isn't the same and the service has gotten slower. My history with this place-- it's special because when I had class at Natomas ARC, i would made a pit stop from Folsom to here then class. Burly--he was one of the nicest guy I've ever met who worked here and wouldn't mind if I studied and ate there. He may look a little hood, but he's friendly! That's why I liked the place-good food, good people. Now under new management, I can't even say the quality of the food is worth the price. This place is an unassuming little eatery tucked away in a weird shopping center deep in a residential neighborhood in Norwood. If you don't live in the area, the environs and the restaurant interior can be a bit disconcerting. But it's well worth the trip. This place has the best khao poon you can get in a restaurant. It's incredibly flavorful. I find myself craving it on cold, cloudy days. It is spicy, even when I ask for it mild. I swear it gets a little spicier every time I come back here. It's still amazing. I also enjoy their angel stuffed chicken wings, and the Lao style papaya salad. Highly recommend this place, especially for your next Lao food craving. I guess this place is known for their Thai/Laos food. Finally had an opportunity to try it out this weekend. They have quite a selection on their menu. We ordered the Kao Peuk, Pad Thai, Papaya Salad and Red Curry. The Kao Peuk wasn't that good to me. But I think only due to the fact that it's my type food. I'm not a huge fan of cilantro, and the broth tasted like too much of it. The Red Curry was good, had plenty of chicken in it. The Pad Thai on the other hand, I wish had more meat in it. There was barely any chicken in there and maybe 2 shrimps. The shrimps were tiny too. The Papaya Salad was delicious though. It tasted like homemade papaya salad instead of the generic tasting ones everywhere else. And when you ask for them to make it spicy, they really do make it spicy unlike many other places. Portions were good. We had plenty of leftovers to take home. Each plate was only $6-7. Usually at a normal Thai place, 4 dishes would equal to at least $40. Since we moved up here I was missing Lao comfort food stopped by to try it out! The sausages were good! Reminded me of my mom's cooking. I was craving Kao Poon hardcore today. So I get in my car at lunch and was prepared to drive to Taste of Angkor. From Arden. That is how strong this craving is. What do you know, this place has kao poon and has a four star rating! So I drive over...through a very interesting neighborhood. And pull up to this place with bars on the windows. Ok, maybe this is a bad idea. But I get out and walk in, and the place was bright and clean and I was the first one there! I ordered the soup (with chow fun noodles DUH) and within 5 minutes it was out. A nice big splash of coconut milk was on top along with the quail eggs. The soup was creamy and fantastic and the chicken was marinated to perfection. And the soup was only $7! I will never recommend this place to family and friends. Very disappointed with the food. I live less than 10 minutes from this restaurant. We ordered to go nam khao, beef laab, drunken noodles and chicken kaopiak. All the food were small portions, salty and soggy. He told us it'll be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived within 20 mins from ordering the food. The nam khao tasted like it was made in the morning, hard to chew and it was not warm when we picked it up. Beef laab was really salty and sour. It was not spicy like we asked. The portion was so small it was the size of an individual lunch. Drunken noodles were not the typical drunken noodles. The noodle was not hot upon pick up. No condensation on the bag. The noodle was soggy and the veggies melted in my mouth (its not supposed to melt In my mouth). I bought it for my 3 year old and 4 year old and it wasn't enough for them because the portions were so small. If I went to Bangkok Garden it would've fed 4 of us. The kaopiak was salty and watered down. It was like they used pho broth over the noodles and there was no thickness to it. I will not return to this place. Only thing cooked correctly was the sticky rice. Then again, who messes up on sticky rice. I paid $45 for my food. So not worth the money and time driving down to pick it up. read more

A few minutes later, my co-workers and I piled into my car and we zipped off to the OTHER side of Natomas. The part that my brother (ex-cop) usually frequented chasing down questionable types. Being that it was day time, it wasn't so bad. The bars on the windows were comforting (?). Thai features prominently on the menu, but my Hmong and Mien colleagues insisted on trying the Lao food. They got the papaya salad which they swore by (a bit too salty for my taste) and we all got kapoon. Never had it before. Reminded me of the laksa I used to order in Australia -- coconut milk base, noodles and other delicious items. Fantastic, hands down. Plenty of flavor with just the right amount of spice. I'm dragging my family out here to try this stuff out! Maybe during daylight though... The spartan decor fits in with the hole-in-the-wall ambiance but the food is good and the price is right. I believe I got out the door with tax and tip for less than $10 or so. Minus a star for dissing customers on Yelp! I can't believe I haven't had Laos food in the past 26 years of my existence until just recently. I've been missing out. At first glance, the words "hood," "sketch," or "psh.. yeah right," may come into one's mind, but never has "judging a book by it's cover" held so little weight. The inside is clean, cool, and homey. Burly jumped to our presence and was extremely friendly and helpful with advising my noob self on what to order. Kao poon, stuffed fried chicken, pork larb... some of the best food I've had in a while. I couldn't breathe. Burly even gave us complimentary sticky rice and Thai Tea's since he knew we had traveled all the way from Antelope and Roseville. Service on New Years Day was amazing. The owner and the cook were both out serving us water and making sure everything was ok. We had a FEAST! 3 of every dish to make sure that everyone ate enough. We had: 1. Papaya Salad: Our friends made sure to get one papaya salad that was non spicy for me and Jasmine W. since we don't like spice very much. 2. Stuffed Chicken Wings: I don't know how they can debone the wing like they do, but I definitely appreciate the effort!!! Crunchy on the outside, flavorful throughout. 3. Sausage with sticky rice: I was skeptical about this sausage! I for sure made up my mind about it in the beginning that I would not like it at all. What? I haven't reviewed this place yet? There was a time where I went here at least once a week to fulfill my spice and Laos flavor cravings. My go-tos 1) papaya salad - be careful with the number of chilis you order with it (6 is medium, 8 is spicy, 10 is you can't feel your mouth) 2) stuffed chicken wings - YUMMMMM I have tried to recreate this recipe several times but have failed. You really can't get these anywhere but a restaurant. 3) sausage with sticky rice - the servings are HUGE and the flavor is full of the basic lemongrass, fish sauce base that many of these dishes have. If you don't like those flavors, you're still going to love this dish... believe me, they work well together 4) Kao poon - a Laotian noodle dish with a coconut and lemongrass base. I LOVE to eat this while it's hot and torture myself with the heat of the papaya salad at the same time. The service is pretty good - our waters were refilled and we were checked on to make sure our food was good. The one star is taken off for the cleanliness of the place (inside and out). I know they can't really help it because of their location, but it would be nice if they tried to keep up the looks of the place just for the ambiance. read more

We called in and was told our food would be ready in 15 minutes. I drive there, got lost, and finally made it there in more than 15 minutes and my food was not ready... The place is a hole in the wall in the sketchy part of town. It wasn't even that busy with two only two tables to serve it shouldn't take that long to prepare our food. My husband got worried about where I was since it took way longer than expected. We ordered the Angel Wings, Papaya Salad, and the Pad See Ew. The Angels Wings were pretty good and so was the Pad See Ew. Good size for the papaya salad but like someone else mentioned the sauce was a bit heavy. They do take card but they charge extra so I suggest paying in cash. There is a parking lot here.
