New people were hired and I called for take out and the young women answered the food and had difficultly understanding my order and then I went to pick it up and as I got home they called me and told me they forgot a portion of my order. I've visited Asian Island a few times now and have had the chance to try various items on their menu. I've had quality appetizers, my favorites being the gyoza and the rock shrimp. There are a variety of ramen-based soups, as well as regional specialties and I've been impressed with the few that I've tried. The sushi is fresh and well proportioned, though admittedly unimaginative. But that's OK for a sushi joint in Sparta. You're not going there expecting anything too exotic, but you definitely get quality. There are your standard rolls (spicy tuna, rainbow, etc.) or Special Rolls (my favorite being the Traffic Light, an inside out roll made with tuna, salmon and yellowtail and topped with multi-colored roe). If you're really hungry, order the Sushi Deluxe, a full plate of various types of sushi and roll. I've also ordered the Tuna Tartar off of the special menu and while I was perplexed by its presentation, it tasted fantastic. While I've mainly stuck with the sushi, some of my friends have ordered the teriyaki specials and some of the other hot items from the menu and have left satisfied. So while you may not be walking into a new sushi experience, you can anticipate a quality meal and fresh sushi. read more

Absolutely love this place! After my normal sushi joint closed down I was really upset and thought I'd never find anywhere close that would compare. I was wrong! We will not be eating here again. We went for our Christmas Eve dinner, for starters the salads were watery and it was easy to tell they are not made fresh at all. Lettuce was nearly frosted. The food came in reasonable time. I got pad Thai with chicken, the chicken was a weird texture and there was vegetables that were not edible in there. I had to discreetly remove it from my mouth after not being able to chew it. That's sonething i've never had to do before! Not only that, it had no flavor. I should have sent it back but I brought it home hoping to save it with some herbs and spices. My boyfriend got the mango shrimp, he liked it. Till he got sick from it. Ruined our night. He is recovering now and needless to say I just threw out my leftovers. I will not be giving this place a second try. read more

This is a great local place. Always friendly and always fresh food. Love the black angel rolls which is a little fancier than some but the classic California rolls are awesome too. The Thai mango dish is one of my favorites and the portions are large. Been here countless times and will continue to return. BYOB helps and coupons frequently in the local Val pack. read more

Their food was very good. I was so happy to find a place that had good sushi so close to us. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The place was a little cold when we were there. When I moved into the Morris/Sussex area I was afraid I wouldn't find the quality sushi that I was accustomed to in Essex County. Boy was I wrong. Asian Island is one of the best restaurants in the area. The quality of the sushi is as good as most of the other restaurants I've been to, and the service is generally excellent; the owner and young man who work the register are incredibly polite, setting a high bar that few others in the restaurant or service industries will attain. I say "generally," however, because the wait staff can be a bit curt at times, not as friendly as they could be. Highly recommended nonetheless. read more

I've been here a few times, and have to say that I've never really had a bad meal here, but I wouldn't classify it as "Oh my god, this is the only place I will go!". I love their variety of japanese and thai, since I'm not a huge sushi guy, but my wife has nothing but great things to say about their sushi, always fresh, well prepared. Some of my thai dishes have come out as just ok, but for the most part they've been fairly good. Not amazing not awful. Sushi was great but my salmon roll was quite warm which was a little off putting. The service was great though. My waitress was kind and helpful. Let me just start off by saying I got out of work at 10:30 pm and had to drive 30mins to pick it up. We called in advance and ordered 2 tuna pizzas and mango mushi (ice cream). They were nice enough to wait for us EVEN after I made to wrong turns and got lost :(. So we get there and the owner...I think...and a lady starts asking us about where I work which is Asian/Spanish fusion. We keep chatting with these beautiful human being, so kind, and nice; and I tell them it's my first time so he went and got us a drinks. Really cool glass bottle design. Anyway I get in the car and i can't wait. It was a good round rice pizza with tuna, crab, avocado, mango, terriaki, etc. everything fresh. I had a dream the night before where I woke up drooling because I was eating. And I kid u not it was THIS pizza. We devour it, it was literally finger licking good. On to the ice cream...words can't describe the texture and soft smooth ice cream. It was like a wafer covered gelato. Ice cream covered with a chewy soft coating of awesomeness. Chocolate strawberry sauce underneath the ice cream accompanied by whip cream and a cherry. We spoke about the food as we ate, while we ate and after we ate. As soon as you walk in, the ambiance of Asian Island will invite you. The place is extremely well-kept and very clean, and the service is impeccable. Very busy on the weekends for a small place, but the quality of the sushi is never sacrificed. They have very high quality fish, and the presentation of the sushi is beautiful. Definitely try the Monster Ball, Sushi Cake, and Fried Red Snapper. If anyone complains about the service here, the only thing I would say to them is TIP YOUR SERVER. My boyfriend and I dine here regularly, and tip well, and we are remembered when we come in, and the service is always excellent. Overall, a very nice, elegant, sushi restaurant in Sussex County. Great for date nights, and although a bit pricey, also good for entertaining large groups (with reservations) who want to try good sushi. read more

I have eaten here a handful of times and I would say that the sushi isn't bad but pretty mediocre. The hot food on the other hand, I would definitely not order again. It didn't look so good but I'm not affraid of messy food some times it's the best. But this just didn't taste right and the chicken was overly processed. Lets just say I didn't eat much of that meal. Best sushi in Sussex County, and believe it or not, some of the best we've had anywhere in the country (and we eat a LOT of sushi). We eat here just about every week and have never had a bad meal. Highly recommend the Asian Island Roll, the Pepper Tuna appetizer, the Tuna Pizza special appetizer and the Tom Yum Gai soup. Their Thai food is quite good (the best we've found in the area) and we've had just about every sushi roll on the menu and all are quite good. Their sashimi is very high quality. Takeout is also very good. Only reluctance in writing this review is that we don't want to encourage more people to eat here and have it become busier than it already is on Friday & Saturday nights! ;-) read more

This is my fav sushi place ever!! I highly recommend the Asian island, Golden Apple and Scorpion dishes!!! I went again last night and it was packed. This is the first time had ever seen it like that. Even the people inside were saying the same thing so I expected the service to be slow and unorganized this particular night. The food was worth the wait. We had a great time waiting anyway....good company with lots of laughs and Yummy sushi goodness to boot! And the owner is the sweetest thing ever!! The staff is also super friendly. Next time I will call ahead and see how busy they are. I've tried one other place in Sparta out of the 3 I've noticed and it was nothing special at all. read more
