If i could give Assal more than 5 stars, I would do it in a heartbeat. This is the most amazing bakery I've ever been to, and I constantly catch myself comparing every other bakery to it (and none ever manage to add up to Assal's amazingness). This place has amazing cream puffs and pastries (the fruit tart and the napoleon are to die for). You really can't go wrong. It's one of the only places that uses real whipped cream instead of that canned crap or cheap frosting. They also make great birthday/wedding cakes. The cake at my engagement party was from Assal and it was so beautiful I didn't want to cut into it. They had made these beautiful bows out of marzipan that just looked incredible. And it tasted so good, people were talking about it for weeks after the party. We'll definitely be ordering our wedding cake from here as well! Also, as a side note, I just read some other people's reviews, and it seems like the people who gave it bad reviews didn't like the baklava. I think that's mainly because most people are used to Greek-style baklava, whereas this is Persian baklava. Persian baklava is really good, just different than the baklava you'd get from some restaurant called "Zorba's." read more

I don't know about you folks but I looooove sweets, pastry's, cakes, cookies, tarts, you name it they got it!!!! Small Persian bakery tucked away in a diverse shopping center. The display shelf is lit up with beautiful, colorful pastries. The two that caught my eye were the pistachio napoleon & the tiramisu. I went there yesterday because I was craving zlabia and baklava. I have never been there before that. From all the reviews I read about it, I was expecting a much bigger varieties of pastries, so that was a con. I was not welcomed at all, when I came in: the lady was ice cold. She didnt even smiled or say hi. She was just standing there and looking at me. So I went ahead and asked for 2 zlabia and 3 baklavas. She packaged it then said the price then I handed her the money. After that she just left the package on the counter and went in the back. I was like OK... Now lets talk about the pastries: the zlabia was delicious, perfect consistency and sweetness. The baklavas were ok, nothing exceptional, I have tasted better homemade ones. Anyways except the zlabia, that was really good, I do not think I will be back for anything else. read more

Mrs. Taghavi is the most sweet and talented owner. We asked her to make a special order cake for our fathers 70th birthday and she delivered and went above and beyond. I know other reviews mention that their customer service isn't great but I think it is. The ladies here are very friendly and welcoming. When you order, they'll ask how many pieces you want so they can determine which box to use. Only negative thing is that they don't have prices in front of the pastries. They price them by weight. This bakery, like most others, has its good day and bad day when it comes to the taste of products they sell. I've been to it very infrequently due to the fact that if you are not middle eastern, you more than likely will be treated as such. But sometimes, its worth the effort for the pastry. Well, here is where the big surprise this time turned up. No, the service was just average and the product, well, I didn't have a chance to actually taste it. I ordered a box of Napoleon as I had received a few from this pastry store recently as a gift from a friend and it was excellent. So thought why not go back and get a box. I placed order at the counter and the pastry was weighed on their scale behind the display case and the sale rang up on the cash register. Based on the price per pound, I thought it was a bit pricy but didn't say anything. My doubt got the better part of me when I got home and thought there is no way this box of Napoleons could weigh this much based on the price I paid at the bakery. I got out the desk top digital postal scale which has a capacity of 30 lbs with an accuracy of 0.10 oz. I put the box of Napoleons on the scale and the weight was displayed clearly. Based on the price per pound as shown at the store, the pastry scale Assal Pastry used was OFF by 60% and that was how I was charged. Needless to say, this was quite a surprise and I weighed this several times more just to be sure. The results were the same each and every time. I took the box of pastries and the digital postal scale back to Assal and explained the situation. The girl behind the counter not only did not want to hear the story, I was just there less than an hour before, but she accused me that my scale was off. I placed the box on my scale, and the numbers do not lie. It was then one of the other women behind the counter stepped up and tried to explain that there must be something wrong with my scale as they have been using their scale for years. I said their scale must not be calibrated and it is off. I was over charged. She wanted to give me the difference but I said no thanks - I need a full refund. Their attitude was rude, condescending and saying that my scale was the problem. I said, don't take my word for it....go to the United States Post Office right down the street on the other side of Interstate 5 less than a mile from this store and go there and measure this yourself. There were many astonished customers standing there listening and watching this entire incident go down. I was given a full refund and they took back the box of pastry. It is unbelievable that this bakery think they can rip off their customers by having a scale off by 60%. And for all the reviewers saying how great this bakery is....well, the owner is laughing all the way to the bank and you didn't even know about how much you've been cheated ...until now. read more

Really bad customer service, employees do not know English at all I'm not sure how they are running there business. They do not work with the customer, you ask for any adjustments to the product they will not do it. They speak in there own language front of customers to make you feel awkward. Manager needs training to learn how to talk to customers and employees. Product expensive over priced, you can get cheaper in Anaheim with quality and great customer service. Uh yea... don't be surprised if you get a really BAD customer service here if you're not a Persian. Seriously. So this past Friday on labor day weekend, my best friend and I just had dinner at Indian Cook House and decided to stop by this bakery for dessert. There were no other customers when we came and since it was already late, there weren't many pastries left anymore (probably like 3 half-filled trays of assorted cakes left). So while we were deciding on what to get this really skinny, tall young lady attended us..well, not really, she just stood there quiet. A few minutes later we were ready to order when, at the same time, a Persian man came in. I was about to say my orders but I quickly withheld because she already went to attend him. I thought.. uhm okay? we came here first but sure whatever we can wait a bit. The man ordered almost half of the already few pastries left. While he was ordering, an older Persian lady came in and quickly started pointing out pastries that she wanted to buy, totally ignoring the fact that we were there first. I was appalled by this Persian lady's rudeness and I was expecting the skinny server to take our orders first but nooooope, she just totally pretended we weren't there. I was like..what the heck? Anyway, I was really getting irked by everything when lo and behold! another group of 5 Persian people came in!! The lady server was about to accommodate them but hey, I didn't want to have the time I spent there be put to waste so I was like, "UHM! Can we have that and that one please?" OMG the kind of rudeness that we got..After looking at me and my bestfriend, the lady server faced the 5 of them and went like, "Is it okay if I serve them first?" ...yea..in my mind I was like........... ........ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! $#!!#@!$#@ LADY WE WERE HERE FIRST!! FIRST AMONG EVERYONE HERE AHH YOU ARE SO RUDE!!! ..... ........... ...........anyway, so they said sure, and so we got out pastries and left. Tried them.. bland..really bland, the cream tasted like frozen vegetable oil to me. No idea if the taste was actually better than how I concluded it but I don't know, maybe the crap customer service we got totally made them taste like crap too.. yea maybe but nah..comparing to other Asian bakeries (85C, Cream Pan, JJ Bakery), the pastries here actually weren't really good at all. read more

Ok hold up hold up WHAT?! Did the clerk at this store have the nerve to call me a liar? This is ABSOLUTE BASIC customer service that seems to be missing from whatever non-training these people have received. I don't care if the quality of their products is said to be good, I'll never know now, but this was the FIRST time I stepped into that store, to buy some pastries that my sister had asked me to pick up for her, and not only will this be MY LAST time, I doubt SHE will ever set foot in there either. Why? Now that you know HOW PISSED OFF I am, if you want to know why, read on: I chose the wrong type of pastry. Called and described it to my sister and it turns out I should've gotten something else, and she also added another item for me to get for her. I walked into the store not 10 minutes after the original purchase to return the UNOPENED PRE-PACKAGED BOX with ribbon and everything intact to get the other two items. After looking at me like I'm from another planet asking her to stand on her head, the clerk takes the box from me and *weighs* it! Then, as she is walking towards the back of the store she turns, smirks at me and says: "You've opened this too, right?" -"um, no." [With an incredulous look on my face] -"Because it's weighing less." [With a "gotcha" look on her face, as she disappears into the back of the store.] -"!!!!!! s i l e n c e !!!!!!" Struggling to recover and looking somewhere into the space between the other customer in the store and the other clerk behind the desk, the only thing I could say was "what did she just say to me?" She came back, handed me cash, I let them know that I had two other purchases that just got cancelled because of what had just transpired, and left Asal at Irvine for the first and last time. TWO things: 1- They just unknowingly confessed to me that their boxes weigh less than they should. 2- I have never been embarrassed in a store like that before, and I really do not need to be exposed to that kind of toxic social dynamic again. read more

Ordered a cake for my son's birthday. Wanted his picture on it. Price went up by $15, which I completely understand. Cake was supposed to be 8x8. When I went to pick it up, the lady said she made it bigger to fit the picture, so I thought "wow, I'll give a good review on yelp." The picture on the cake was darker than the original.The cake was DRY when we ate it. Lesson of the day: doesn't matter if the cake is bigger, it needs to TASTE good. I was disappointed. read more
