This Asian bakery , not even sure what style of bread and pastries they are, but I'm assuming Chinese esque. It's super good. It satisfies a different itch than like 85 degrees or some of the other mainstream places. Very very addicted to the little balls, idk what they're called but there's. Like taro, green tea and sesame varieties. The date walnut item is also very delectable. My own sour experience here in my many times I've been there is one time i arrived like 30 seconds after they Closed and the dude there saw me, and I waved politely. Told him I just wanted to buy 3 quick things and even had cash. But he ignored me. Kind of hurt my feelings cus I was there like right at closing. But oh well. Maybe he was in a rush to get home. Bought 4 cakes and the pork floss bun. My favorite was the taro cake as the filling had real taro and it was dense and texture was really good. The next good one was the mango cake the flavor was really good. The staff were nice the pork floss bun was good. Overall all 4 cakes were dry. The coffee/mocha cake and the Black Forest could not be saved due to how dry the cake was. read more

I can't speak so much for the cakes, but the breads and pastries have always been delicious and comforting. The fair prices and quality remain consistent and the good variety of Taiwanese pastries/breads keep me a happy customer especially because the next good bakeries like this one are all the way out in 626! I've passed by this bakery over the years but either it was after hours, or wasn't having any cravings for baked items, but I finally did and got to check out this J.J.'s in town. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I don't think this is part of the actual J.J. Bakery (same name, but very different vibe here), but this one has tables and seats in the back and has a more modern look and feel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's only two staff members working here at a time - think one is the owner and other is staff. But their bakery selections are of an abundance, with your Pineapple Buns, Taro Buns, Hot Dog Buns, cakes and also drinks. I picked up one of the Melon Flaky Pastry (forget its name...) and also one of their Rice Rolls. Both were pretty good, with the pastry item being my favorite. The Rice Roll was about $5 and the Melon Pastry about $3 (before tax). Their items are fresh, but they serve it all with Irvine prices lol. Two items for almost 10 bucks. Worth the visit though if you're ever wanting some Taiwanese baked goods. Lots of parking here, as it's inside a large shopping plaza. read more

If we are comparing pricing for birthday cakes from Asian bakeries, then J.J. Bakery wins for being a more affordable option. I ordered a 8" vanilla chiffon cake with strawberry filling for my boyfriend's dad's birthday. The cake cost $38, which I think is quite affordable in this economy! The cake tasted decent, and there was plenty of fruit on top and inside of the cake; however, it was on the drier side. Also, I was disappointed that the Irvine location did not participate in the Thanksgiving promotion and didn't have any Thanksgiving cakes available for preorder. If you are interested in their seasonal cakes, you are better off ordering at the Rowland Heights location, which does offer seasonal promotions. read more

I only stop by here because i was at CVS and wanted a quick snack. I picked up a slice of pound cake and a tuna sandwich. Both was mediocre at best. The slice of pound cake was stale and the tuna sandwich seemed like it's been in the fridge awhile. Now, I understand why it was only $8.00. They do have a wide selection of stuff, more than other similar bakeries. But I prefer Sunmerry Bakery or 85 Degrees Bakery instead. read more

Last minute pop in before my appointment at PureLux. I love Culver Plaza because there is plenty of parking spots and the aisles are nice and wide. I was there waiting for a coconut bun about an hour an a half. The young owner was so so very helpful, nice, great customer service ever. I asks him question about the items in the bakery. He then gave me forFREE to go try the all coconut bread. No ever give anyone anything for free now a days but, this young owner gentleman was so generous gave me this for free. 5 Stars ALL THE WAY! I have no idea why this place only has three stars because if there were six stars available, that's what I would give this wonderful bakery! We discovered this place on our last trip from Vegas and when we were back in the area, we could not wait to get back here. Everything is so super fresh and it's not overly sweet. My husband and I always look forward to loading up on baked goods to keep in the hotel room and enjoy while we're visiting California and in the area. I came here for a quick snack/lunch! The egg and ham sandwich was good! Bread was soft and there was good amount of mayo throughout the sandwich. I also grabbed the "panda bread" which is a chocolate cake like bread that is wrapped around white bread. The chocolate part of the bread was pretty moist but the white bread part was too dry. I did enjoy the combination of these two breads though. Service was nice and quick. The cashier was very friendly and smiley. There are a few booths towards the side of the store if you want to sit and eat. Other than that, it's your typical grab and go bakery. I want to start by saying the cake here was good, but the price and service was horrible. I pre ordered a cake by phone, was quoted $54, gave my credit card info over the phone. When I went to pick the cake up, the total went from $54, to $58 (for a $4 credit card fee) to a grand total of $64 with no explanation AT ALL!!! The person at the register could not tell me what the extra $10 was for, she said her manager was not there and when I got my printed receipt it was not itemized. All it said was total $64, no tax. This is the most ridiculous thing ever!! At least warn people over the phone that the final cost will include a $10 mystery fee. read more

Can only speak to take out taro and mudslide cakes! Was informed these are two of their most popular items. The taro cake was delicious - light, sweet, fluffy. Definitely fulfilled my sugar cravings. The mudslide is chocolate and was slightly dry. Hubby had no problem finishing that dish though. read more

We ordered their green tea, teriyaki chicken combo, and a JJ chicken combo. The green tea had strong flavors, and it's not too sweet. Teriyaki chicken: was a bit bland, but the chicken was tender and not overcooked. The salad and macaroni it came with was just okay. JJ chicken: the chicken was well flavored, but the minced meat was pretty salty. It came with steamed cabbage, fried egg, and corn too. Prices were affordable and portions were decent. I like coming here because their baked goods and cakes are consistently delicious. However, the prices keep going up!!! For any Taiwanese/Chinese celebrations, they make special goods like Moon Cake with red bean or read bean with yolk. If you order a lot they provide a nice gift box for you to take home. Omg the cakes here taste so bad. I have always loved buying cakes and bread from the other branch. This branch tastes so bad!

I was craving taro pastries and found this place from a yelp search. I picked up some other items as well to try but ultimately only liked the taro items. What I got: -Taro Pastry: My favorite of the bunch. The outer layer was light and flakey and the inner taro filling was creamy and not too sweet. My family loved this one as well. -Red Bean Pastry: I would say this one was second best. The red bean was well pronounced and not too sweet. Same outer layer as the others. -Green Tea Pastry: I am a huge matcha lover so I thought I would like this one but it was just okay. Out of the 4 pastries, I would probably rank it third. The green tea was just meh in terms of flavor and overall presence. -Black Sesame Pastry: I was a little disappointed about this one. The black sesame flavor was definitely there but for some reason, this pastry tasted much sweeter than the others. I love a good black sesame but this one just fell short. Not as pleasant to finish compared to the other pastries. -Red Bean Mochi Pastry: While I enjoyed the red bean filling and the mochi's soft and chewy texture, I felt like the outer shell had some issues with lamination. The flakey layers were stuck together on one side and created an exterior that was a bit dense. I would say it's just alright, but I wouldn't purchase it again. -Taro Bun: I actually ended up liking this one. The bread was soft and the outside of the bun had like a flakey dome crust on the top. There is a good amount of taro filling inside and it is creamy and done well, but if I had to give a critique, I would just like to see the filling be more evenly distributed. I took about 6 bites into the bread before realizing there was actually filling and it just happened to be situated on the other side of the bun. The shop and parking: The shop itself is small but appears to be connected to a cafe. You can pick up a tray and tongs and choose your items the same way you would at 85 degrees or other similar asian bakeries, and they have a comparable selection as well. The only thing I thought was slightly strange was that some of the bags holding the pastries were not sealed when sitting on the shelves. They only get sealed once you pay for them. (This wasn't the case for all of the items but I did notice this for some.) This may or may not be an issue, but you can make of that what you will. The shop is next to a bank and really close to the 99 Ranch market. The plaza is large so parking is pretty easy to find in this area. Overall, I would come back, but only to purchase the Taro items. read more

JJ is an Irvine classic. My family and I have been coming here for years. It's located right next to 99 Ranch and MS slim. Super easy to spot and not hard to find parking, even during dinner hours. We love their Pineapple buns, taro cake, Swiss roll cake (comes in Coffee, vanilla, matcha), hot dog buns, and egg tarts. The store is small, but there's also an open dining area. Dropped by this bakery a few months ago as we were exploring the plaza. Hubby suggested it to me as he used to swing by to grab a quick lunch when he was working in the area a decade ago. I got excited and popped in to look at their pastry offerings since it seems like their dining area was closed. They carried similar items to most Taiwanese bakeries such savory and sweet breads. I ended up picking up a garlic bread slice, hot dog bun, and taro pastry. The garlic bread was okay. It was extremely buttery and the garlic was great. I had to reheat it in the oven because it was soggy from sitting out. As for the hot dog bread, it was very underwhelming. I wish it had more flavor, it didn't really compare to the 85 degrees hot dog bread if I am being honest. I also reheated it and it tasted a bit better after that. The pricing for the pastries was okay, but it seems like the savory pastries need some reheating to taste better. However, the taro pastry was exceptional. The taro taste was light but it was there. I like the flaky layers and that was probably my favorite pick out of the 3 that I had bought. read more
