Their pastries and cakes deserve 5 stars, but their service is only 2 stars, hence my 3 star rating. They are fine if you are buying pastries they already have on hand. But if you want to buy a whole cake, they often give confusing or conflicting information about whether it needs to be ordered in advance or not. And then when you go to pick up the cake, they are sometimes grumpy or are outright rude to you as if you're a burden on them. Their lousy and inconsistent customer service is what holds me back from giving them more business. They really need to improve their customer service and be consistent about which cakes are always available and which ones need advance order. They also need to train their employees to be courteous and professional with customers. In this day and age with so many local businesses struggling, you'd think they'd make more effort to retain customers. Their arrogance with customers is astounding. read more

This place has some of the best and freshest pastries! It can be a bit intimidating to walk in and try choosing on your own. But, don't be afraid to ask the staff for help. I haven't tried anything I didn't love yet. My favorite are cream puffs (they use real whip cream!!!!) cream rolls that look a bit cannoli, cute little cake patties and those chocolate dipped tear shaped cookies. read more

Loved their tiramisu and cream puffs, but the ladies working there are not really nice. I went there today with my sister-in-law and my aunt. It wasn't my first time going there, my sis-in-law and I wanted to take my aunt there so she could try their pastries. But the tall skinny lady working there gave us the attitude. She was very rude! This is one of the best bakeries that I've ever been to! I will say though I do agree that the service is a bit rude but ehh what can you do. If they don't like you then they don't like you. I actually wanted to pick up some steamed BBQ pork buns from Diho a few doors over, but I knew they were closed so I remember reading about Assal Pastry from Yelp so I decided to drop in. I got a little out of hand...I got a piece of the chocolate cake, coffee cake, mocha roll and several cookies -- baklava, cinnamon twist, walnut cookie, pistachio macaroon, raisin cookie, apricot and raspberry jelly cookie, powdered sugar twist, hmm...I think that was it. The only thing I liked among all that was purchased is the Coffee Cake. Everything else was okay or wasn't to my or my husband's liking. Thought yelpers said Napoleon cake was good, but it was disappointing, the fluffiness layer of the cake is not crispy, the cream is not rich or creamy, nothing special, I would never miss it if I never get to eat it in my whole life. Customers services were not good either, there was a girl was staring at me angrily, she looked pissed of and didn't bother responded one of my comment. I ordered 1 piece of Napoleon and before I even get some more , she asked " Only one piece?" We always stop by this place for desert after having lunch at Caspian. Assal makes the best Napoleon that I have ever tasted-- perfect balance of flavors. The cream puff is also delicious. Their pastries are the perfect size, so you don't have to worry about too much calories. It is not too expensive either, compared to other pastry shops that I have been to. The five stars are all for their tiramisu, light, creamy, and a touch sweet. I've tried their other pastries, but their little tiramisu cups with a light dusting of cocao powder topped with a sugar glazed strawberry takes the cake. Persian pastries, why haven't we met yet?! i came here because one of my classmates suggested we get some desserts after dinner. It's a pretty small place but don't be fooled! As soon as I came in the store it was pretty packed and I notice right away the rows and rows of desserts sitting in the glass cases. They looked so delicious and they turned out to taste as good as they looked! I suggest trying the tiramisu..it was PERFECT! my second favorite would have to be the cone looking pastry. i dont know what you call it but its in a shape of a cone with the whipped cream inside. I know it sounds realy simple but it's heaven. The pistachio cake was good as well. I got 4 cakes and to my surprise they came out to about $7. That's less than $2 per piece! i was so surprised because they look far more expensive than they really are. I will definately come back here! read more

I used to be a fan of Assal since high school. It's hidden and all my friends know this place because I have taken out so many times. Although I'm not familiar with the culture, the cakes are delicious and some has a kick from their own spices. Early years, most of workers were always friendly and very nice enough to explain which is which whenever I brought a friend who usually gets overexcited and starts asking billions of questions. I still don't know what happened but out of many visits, I started noticing some attitudes and unpleasant customer service from certain workers. Since then, I just wish I run into the nice ones every time I go but it's getting to the point that I don't want to go back anymore because like the other yelper said, "we are the customers." If you like the original form of tiramisu not the solid cake form, this is the place to go. Fruit tarts are great too but I personally think you can't mess up fruit tarts if you're using the right ingredients. Also, their cakes taste good with generous amount of fruits. Don't go here save your money. They call their customers liars. I was in the Irvine & I thought I would come support a small business cause of covid 19 & pick some pastry's up while headed back home to SD. Upon getting there the employee who was helping was so rude. I approached her nicely but she was just not having it for whatever reason. I ignored the fact she was being rude & gave my order. I asked her if the scones were fresh & I wanted 16 of them. She said they only have 8 left. She just hands me the box without wrapping it & I'm like aren't you going to wrap it... she just gives me an attitude. I ignore it. She takes me payment doesn't tell me what the total was... I go home try the pastry & it's absolutely hard to chew & stale... I tried calling the store multiple times, the manager isn't around. One time got a hold of the manager she said she will call me back, never got a call back so I tried calling again today & I finally spoke to an employee regarding their stale pastries. She told me that's not possible they weren't fresh. She told me to drive the pastries back to her from San Diego to Irvine. She said I was lying & this isn't Costco. She said they only have fresh pastries & I said sometimes mistakes happens... due to coronavirus you were shut for a while. The scones were absolutely stale & old. I had simply called to let her know the issue in a polite manner but they are rude. They have horrible customer service. I am never going there again. Save your money & find a different pastry place to go to. They are rude & absolutely don't care about their customers. They are all about their money. read more

Their pastries are good but once every year or so when I forget and I go there I promise myself this is the last time. There is no customer service I suggest the owner to get out once in a while and go to other stores and see how other sale people are interacting. I don't mind paying your ridiculously high price but at least when I leave your store I shouldn't feel the bad taste in my mouth. The bakery (Solomon bakery on Lake Forest), ruined the cake, that we ordered a full sheet cake from for our son's 18th brithday party. We called Assal Pastry and they were able to have a full sheet cake ready for us in an hour. WOW, hats off to you for rescuing us from a terrible situation that Solomon bakery put us in. I'm a 60 year old women & I'm diabetic. But I remember my daughter use buy pastries from there & was very happy. She's disappeared for 2 years now & just can't find her. So I every week come there buy pastries & take it to the church. Then pray to God to find her. You have an exellent customer service. There is one young lady who looks a lot like my daughter. She is so beautiful & has a piercing. When ever I come there I look in to her eyes & try to make her help me cause I feel like my daughter is helping. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I really do...great pastry...especially anything made with pistachios. Love the rolls w/ cream, saffron and pistachio. Great place to stop before visiting a friend...since they wrap up the pastries in pretty boxes and you can take as a "hostess" gift....fav spot for special treats and prices aren't too bad...not cheap per say but not crazy irvine prices either. read more
