For this week's takeout, we went Greek. I have wanted to try out Athena's for a while now I what better time than now! I ordered the chicken gyro with a side of fries and the falafel platter. The wrap: LOADED! good meat to veggie ratio. Meat could have been a little more flavorful (since the sauces overpowered the meat) but it tasted good as a wrap. The side of fries were a little soggy but that's to be expected. Just get salad as a side ;) The falafel platter: fresh, flavorful, and filling. Came with a side of fresh bread, greens, and sauces. I've ordered from this place 3 times in the last week. That's how delicious the food is! My orders have included the chicken souvlaki wrap (comes with side of choice like fruit yet I still always get fries), the Greek salad, the house salad, and a side of fries (even more fries)! The chicken souvlaki has a generous portion of veggies, chicken, and tzatziki sauce. The chicken pieces are large and plenty throughout the entire wrap. The chicken doesn't taste like rubber like it has at many places I've ordered a wrap at which is a plus! The tzatziki is delicious and not bitter. The wrap comes with a choice of side which is always the garlic fries for me! The fries are delicious and although they aren't as crispy as they might be if you ate them at the restaurant I still enjoy them. They pair well with the olive spread they come with. The Greek salad was good but I'm not a huge fan of the dark leafy greens in this salad. I enjoyed the House salad more that has romaine lettuce. The feta is delicious in both salads. I've ordered these salads as sides and entrées. The Baklava had a generous filling but wasn't very flaky. It didn't have much flavor so I'll pass on this in the future. I've enjoyed my meals each time. The food remains consistent. Everything is packed neatly and utensils are wrapped with a napkin ready for use. Since moving back to the bay area, we've come here twice, and both times we've really enjoyed the food. I ordered the lamb shank the first time and it was delicious, and the second time I got the branzini, a whole grilled fish served with fries which was also lovely. Appetizers, desserts, all yummy! I had only been here once before many years back, and did not quite remember the place, so I'm glad we came in to try it once again. The server was nice, and the seating outdoors was enjoyable. I am only taking away 1 star because I feel the prices are just way too high for the portions. Some of the meals were plenty and filling, others although just as expensive, leave you walking away hungry. No complimentary bread, you will need to pay extra to have bread served with one of the dip appetizers. Paying over $100 for 3 people to eat dinner with no drinks? That's steep! If the prices were more affordable we'd come in much more often, but at these prices it will have to be infrequent, which is sad. read more

Funny thing... I actually ate here for the first time right before the shelter in place happened, and I recently was in the area and did a take out order with them. LOGISTICS What a weird location... it's in the middle of an office / warehouse area, kind of hidden away from the public. Yet pre-COVID, it was a very popular lunch spot and street parking was kind of a pain. Technically there should be plenty of street parking available... but the fiance and I had to drive around a bit to find it, and even then it was a far walk. Nowadays with the shelter in place it's easy to park nearby to pick up food... recently they've opened for outdoor dining, so that may change! The inside is really cute with a view of the open kitchen. Pre-COVID the inside was very busy with lots of people and tables packed for a tight and cozy atmosphere. Given the new restrictions, their outdoor dining is more spaced out from what I saw, and all the staff are now wearing face masks. One thing to note - while they had in-service dining pre-COVID, they're takeout service is quite fast. I actually ordered last minute since I had to meet up with a coworker coming here, and although I ordered right as I arrived, my food was ready in less than 10 minutes. FOOD - Complimentary Pita Bred and Hummus: This was available for the dine in experience pre-COVID... they have a really good hummus sauce that went great with the pita bread. - Falafel Appetizer: One of my favorite falafels in the area, perfectly fried with a soft crumbly center and great flavor. Some fafafels can get dried out, these are still soft and moist. - Chicken Souvlaki Wrap: Had this both in-house and as take out. The chicken is so tasy! Chicken isn't my favorite option, but at Greek and Mediterranean restaurants the way they grill it is always nice. The first time I had it was moist with a char. The 2nd time via take out, it was a little dry... still flavorful. They put some kind of cucumber mint sauce on top that went really well with the other veggies, making for a tasty wrap. - Falafel Wrap: Got this as take out... as I said above the falafels are delicious and the pita itself is nice and soft. Only thing that bothered me was that it was dry; there was no sauce added, unlike the chicken soulvaki wrap. Is it supposed to be like this? I'm not sure... I opted to douse it with olive dip. I'd like to add that both wraps come with fries and a small side of olive dip... but more on that below. The fries are tasty, nicely cut and go really well as a side. - Olive Dip: THAT STUFF IS DELICIOUS. Expensive as an extra takeout item - it's like a little over a cup they give for $7.50. They give you a smaller portion with the wraps. I also couldn't tell if it came with extra fries since they combined all the fries in our take out order... but it's really good. When I first ate here this really stood out for me. I think it's a mayo or sour cream sauce, but it's pretty clear there are Kalamata olives to give it a distinct flavor. Delicious with fries and pita bread, and I kept adding it to my wrap. OVERALL It's a little on the pricey side, but the flavors are good and the portions are quite huge. I'm always stuffed after eating food from here. For me, the olive dip stands out from other Greek places I've been to and I look forward to coming back when things are (eventually) back to normal. One of our entree came with veggies medley and we had asked if there's broccoli in it because we can't have broccoli. She said it was mixed in already, so we still ordered it. I wouldn't have expected a place like this to be in the area. Being in a corner there's plenty of parking. Upon walking into the patio I noticed that there was a bunch of shade which was really nice because it was a hot and sunny day. There are lots of blue and white colors which reminded me of the Greek city, Santorini. Inside the restaurant I was greeted with a warm welcome and to the lovely sound of Greek music. The aroma of the food being prepared told me I was in for an experience. I ordered a chicken Souvlaki and a baklava. While I waited for my meal, I took a look at all the decorations and Greek memorabilia. I was fascinated to see so many and in a way felt like I was at a museum. Didn't wait too long for my food which was really nice as I was on my lunch break. I'd come here on a solo date , with a date, friends or family, I felt really comfortable. Now for the meal , they were very generous with the sauce. The chicken was soft and tender, none of that dry and rubbery texture. Very flavorful, the bread was so soft, the veggies were really fresh. This was my first time here, and I was extremely happy with my experience. I got the falafel pita wrap and it was quite tasty. The ingredients were fresh and the falafel itself was nice and crispy although I did feel like the pita itself was a little dry. They do give you some sauce on the side, but wish they had layered it to begin with. The fries were nice and crispy but for being garlic fries felt they could've been seasoned a little bit better. Yummy place for dinner! Good portion sizes and the food is super flavorful. We got the dips to share (Athena's Spread, Hummus, and a Feta Spread) all we're great but my group preferred the Hummus and Athena Spread the most. These items were pretty good and probably the only items I enjoyed from our evening :(. I ordered the falafel pita wrap. The wrap was filled with falafels, cucumbers, mixed greens, and tomatoes. On the side was a cup that was 1/3 full with tahini sauce. Aside from the small side of tahini sauce, the wrap was very dry. I am definitely a sauce person and the wrap needed a lot of sauce. Yes I could have ordered extra tahini sauce but it was extremely garlicy which was too overpowering. I think the wrap would have gone well with a combination of tzatziki and tahini sauce. The falafels were also very dry and almost hard to chew. On the side was fries. The fries were cold and also very very garlicy. They came with a 1/4 cup full of dip which was pretty good. However, this goes back to my issue about the food being dry. After reading many other reviews, it seems like their main complaint about the food is being too "dry" and seems like a reoccurring issue. I am definitely a sauce person so dry food is not my thing. On top of it, the parking situation is absolutely horrible. We got lucky because someone pulled out on the street, but if it wasn't for the person pulling out, we would have never found parking. The wrap itself is good size, but it is very difficult to eat. Contents kept spilling out from the wrap. You either need a very large mouth, or it have to eat it deconstructed to keep minimize the mess. Dipping sauce- The dipping sauce that everybody is raving about! It definitely lives up to the hype. It is very unique with a slight hint of olive. Even I am normally impartial to olives found it very tasty. The sauce definitely help us consume the fries very quickly. I love me some gyro meat and it is very excellent here, but when I come here the star is always the grilled Swordfish. Hands down one of the best Mediterranean places in Santa Clara, if not the best. One thing I particularly like about this place is their unique olive dip. Goes really well with their fries. Most of the time I just get one of the wraps because it has everything. You walk in, lineup, and order at the counter. Then you pick up your food and find a seat to enjoy it. Athena Grill is in an unassuming building that looks like a warehouse. It looks a bit like a warehouse inside as well, although they've done a job decorating so it doesn't feel like one. There are lots of windows and a good amount of outdoor seating that's covered, to make sitting outside a great option as well. We came for a group lunch and everyone walked out full and satisfied. We had a group of 8 and it looked like there were a few more similarly sized groups both inside and outside. While we were perusing the menu, the owner came by to say hi and sell us on the special lemon dessert that is only served on Friday (spoiler - it worked, we got it). I think you're normally supposed to order at the counter but since we were a large group that had a reservation, someone came to take our order. Portions are huge! We started with two orders each of lamb riblets and octopus. With the bread baskets, we were already starting to fill up. The meat platter was okay, but the octopus was very nice and tender. I got the gyro platter, it was huge, and #noregrets. The salad had large chunks of feta cheese and the meat much tastier than it expected. When I saw that it was ground beef, I was expecting more like a hamburger, but it was seasoned and way better. The fries were only okay. I took home 2/3 of my meal and when I ate the rest of it a couple days later, I was surprised to find that the pita and the meat were still soft and yummy. For dessert, we shared some baklava and the lemon pastry. The baklava was more wet than I'm used to. The lemon pastry was great! I highly recommend it! read more

Went back here after years of not visiting due to working from home & the plandemic. The garlic fries with the olive whip dip is still as good as I remember. Wife got the sardine plate which was really fantastic with side of garlic fries & salad. The simple treatment of the whole sardines properly grilled and in that delicious olive oil marinade was just great, splash of lemon and she was in her happy place. I had the gyro wrap with those wonderful garlic fries. If I had to complain, I'd say the bread is too thick on the gyro and I'd appreciate something half as thick and a bit more delicate. The gyro pita bread they use is very thick so that is potentially room for improvement. I can't really fault anything else other than carving the crusty bits of gyro off the spit is the way to go. The food is really nice and hard to get this type of food in the Bay Area. Service is great and the staff knows the menu and can recommend some options easily if you are stuck deciding. read more

I ordered for 21 men at a engineering company. They all complained about the meat pieces being so small because I told them they could only take one chicken and one beef skewer. I called Athena to address my concerns about there being enough food prior to the order arriving and they told me there should be enough, that sometimes the cooks throw in some extra. For the price I paid for 21 people with tip, right under $500 the skewers should have been longer. Just a couple more pieces to each skewer would have been perfect. My guys were still hungry. I was so disappointed. I feel like Athena was stingy with the portions for the price! read more

Before I get to the food if any of have ever watched "the great race" on tv you know the contestants are given clues to arrive at their next destination. I bring this up only to say this Athena Grill is not exactly "on the main street" it is well hidden in and amongst the industrial area of Santa Clara. But it is WORTH! The adventure to find it. And when you do and you park just follow the delicious aromas of the various Greek dishes being prepared. For me waiting for our order was hard because it all smells so good and when it smells that good you are already eating with your sense of smell long before you are eating with your eyes. The service is quick and friendly and they are happy to suggest a dish or two if you can not decide. I had the Gyro with Swordfish and the Lamb riblets so tender highly recommend those the food was very ended with the Greek yogurt with sour cherries* they also offer the Greek yogurt with a Quince topping. read more

I love this place and you do, too. Seriously though, based on the customer service here alone, it is worth the 5*. They greet you at the door (which the line usually stretches out at lunch, which is the only time that I've ever been here), and make you feel like you are family. Then the food comes! I love Gyros, and really most Greek food, and this place never disappoints. It's actually a shame that I don't eat here more often, hahahahahahaha, but whatever, The future is the future. Maybe next time I swing by here I'll try something that I never have, but until then, the Gyro plates are absolutely amazing and you would be a fool to not try them! Don't be a fool, use your tool!
