We came here after a Volunteer thing at Second Harvest (STRONGLY SUGGEST VOLUNTEERING HERE!) and it was amazing! Despite our concerns that the team would wreak of garlic after, everyone enjoyed it post meal. Food: Ordered the grilled octopus and Lamb Souvlaki. Both were amazing. Either that or I was just SO hungry that I would eat anything. The Octopus was a little on the steep side price wise, but it's worth the price for the quality. Service: They were very attentive and accommodating for the 14 of us. They offered to move tables around so we could all sit together, but instead we split into two tables. Location: It's in a bit of a weird spot. Kind of a corner of an industrial area, but hey, who cares if the food's good. The room was decorated with the normal plethora of greek maps, lore, and other things you'd expect from a small owned restaurant like this. Last time I was here was over three years ago and as you can see in my past review, I enjoyed it. Sadly, I came in with three of my coworkers yesterday around 1 o'clock and didn't experience the same. Our dining experience was not so pleasant. We started off with the falafel, eggplant, and mushroom appetizer which wasn't too pretty but tasted good. We also ordered the calamari. After receiving our lunch we found ourselves constantly shooing away gnats. I understand that this place has outdoor seating and the doors remain open but we were sitting inside and we shouldn't have to deal with pest flying around and landing on our food. Anyhow, we continue to eat while constantly swiping away and tried to enjoy our meal. Unfortunately not long after Leaving I started to experience a stomachache and shortly after that, two of my coworkers started experiencing the same. The only thing we could relate it to was lunch and the fact that us three out of four of us ate the egg plant on the appetizer plate. The customer service was great. The staff are all friendly and you could tell they work together as a team. Sadly, however they're handling food is obviously not sanitary. Thankfully our stomach aches and use of frequent bathroom breaks did not last too long. Friends came here for the lamb and they said the lamb was great. I don't eat lamb and hence ordered the seafood souvlaki (skewers). It wasn't as good as I've expected for the price. Shrimp and scallops were ok but the fish was quite dry. The Greek salad that came with only had lettuce, olives and cheese. Didn't have cucumbers nor tomatoes that I've expected. I came here for dinner with my son and I can't say that I enjoyed the food very much. Spanakopita was soggy, the steak had a weird dark blue spot on one side and temperature was wrong. We ordered it medium rare received a well done steak. The service was okay but server never really returned he was friendly at first. We opted for outdoor dining since indoor looked too dark. I always forget to take pictures of the food from here but this is one of our go-to spots for company lunches and events. Their customer service is great and their food is always enjoyed by everyone at the office! They do catered lunches and are flexible with the options if you give them a call. We tend to do pita wrap lunch boxes and each box comes with a cup of fresh fruit and a pita wrap with either gyro beef, chicken, or mushroom or falafel (veggie option). We have also had them cater buffet-style and they delivered everything hot and sealed. I got plain fries since I do not care for garlic, and they served a little bowl of Kalamata olive sauce that was such a treat to dip in. Also a salad which is refreshing. They used meat in the moussaka and pastitsio, which is refreshing since many places don't these days. Also they offer traditional dolmades with meat, which I will have to try next time. Also have plenty of non-meat items, and even branzino! My colleague got the lamb gyro and it was very large and looked tasty. Been here a couple times. Years apart. The first time was at the recommendation of the person at the front desk of the hotel I was staying at. Last night, I found them here on Yelp. First of all, it's in a random location and you won't likely just find it driving by so I'm glad for both times it came across my path. The food is excellent. I had the lamb chops and fries with a side salad. Top notch! While I don't usually, I had desert and a coffee - turns out I'm not a fan of Greek Coffee but the baklava was outrageously good. Beautiful Greek restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. They have an extensive Greek and Mediterranean menu. My dining companion ordered the lamb shanks and was completely delighted with them. I ordered the kebabs combination. We began with delicious Greek salads. We also had hummus which was absolutely scrumptious. The outdoor seating is in an enclosed patio lined with tall bushes. There are umbrellas so that the sun does not beat down on you although the San Jose weather does not allow that for the evening in October. On the weekends they do serve a very scrumptious dessert called Galakboureko. It is a special pastry custody thing and was highly recommended to me by my physical therapist here in Fresno. This restaurant is one of the few in the area that actually serves it. Give it a try! Wait staff were very attentive, prompt, not intrusive, and very concerned to make sure that everything was just as you wanted it. I hadn't been to Athena Grill in a few years, even pre-pandemic, since I no longer work nearby. I was so pleased to visit this past weekend. Their outdoor seating is seriously ginormous and very spacious, so we really felt like they were taking it seriously. There is a sign up that the servers have all been vaccinated and they wear masks when serving you outside. Everything seems super hygienic. Also their menu is larger than I remember it, and they seem to have many more options including lots of vegan and vegetarian things. I got a greek salad with swordfish on top, and the swordfish was so flavorful and the salad was really fresh. My boyfriend got the briami and he really loved it. The portions are great, entrees come with salad and fries, and they bring out free pita and hummus as an appetizer. A great experience, we will definitely be back! read more

Athena Grill is tucked away in the business-y area but has a charming outdoor patio. Our party of four reserved a table online on a Wednesday evening. We came around 6:00 and it wasn't too busy, but it definitely got busier later. We received a complimentary basket of bread (pita, freshly pita fried pita chips, and white bread) and hummus. We also ordered skordalia to eat with our bread. Everyone loved the calamari and garlic fries. The garlic fries were definitely the highlight of our meals. If I happened to be in the area, I'd happily gorge myself on fries from here. My lamb souvlaki was a bit dry, but I still enjoyed it with all the accompaniments. I didn't try all of my dining companions' dishes, but the two things I liked the most were the gyro and sausage. Both proteins were very flavorful and juicy. I liked the sausage's strong oregano flavor and snappy texture. I would pick gyro for my protein of choice the next time I come here, I liked how it was cut a bit thicker than gyro you'd get at other places. Athena Grill is definitely a solid place. Athena Grill is located in an industrial area of Santa Clara and it lacks a parking lot. Depending on when you go, street parking can be difficult to find because of the local surrounding businesses. Right off the bat, we were greeted and urged to chose the table of our choice. The workers we encountered were all friendly and provided excellent service. We shared a bowl of bean soup, which was very good. My husband had the chicken souvlaki plate, and he enjoyed it very much. I had the Briami plate, a vegetarian plate featuring roasted vegetables. Although it is described as being in a light tomato sauce, there was no sauce to speak of. The veggies tasted fine. They lacked potatoes in the mix (though the menu said they were included) at least I did not taste any. Still, the dish came with garlic French fries, and I was able to get ketchup for them. The dished come with a side salad; unfortunately, I'm not fond of oil/vinegar dressings like that. We tried the almond cake from the dessert menu, and we agreed it was okay, but could have used something more to dress it up; and I would have preferred a stronger almond flavor. read more

Athena Grill in Santa Clara is, without question, the best Greek food we've enjoyed in California--period...and we've been to numerous Greek restaurants. The recipes, passed down from the owner's mother, shine through in every flavorful bite. On this visit, we ordered the Combination Plate, which featured pastitsio, mousaka, spanakopita, and gyro with tomato and tzatziki, served with crispy garlic fries and a wonderful sauce. Each dish was outstanding--the lamb and gyro were perfectly seasoned, the spanakopita light and flaky, and the pastitsio and mousaka rich with authentic flavor. It was also accompanied by a great salad. The portions were generous, and we were happy to enjoy leftovers at home the next day. On our last visit years ago, we had the pleasure of meeting owner George Katsoulis, and this time, we met his son, Takis Katsoulis--both incredibly friendly and welcoming, a true reflection of the warm service here. You get a choice to enjoy the beautiful weather outside or to sit inside. I chose to sit inside for my 1st time here since I wanted to see the inside of the restaurant. 1st off, the staff was sooooooo nice which always starts the meal off right. Went with the riblets as my appetizer & it was tiny bites of heaven. Every bite I could see all the way back to my childhood when every bite was as good as this one lmaooo. The main course was the chicken souvlaki with shrimp added ahhhhh so good. The rice compliments the meat so perfectly, I was in awe of how good the rice was. The shrimp & chicken were perfectly seasoned & had me wanting more. Came back a few times later and tried the lamb and maaaannnnn it was delicious. Athena Grill is a Greek restaurant that is very popular with people that work in the area. They have a pretty extensive Greek menu with various serving sizes to make sure that you have full control over what you order. I've been here many times (probably more than 30 times) as it's one of my favorite spots whenever I work around the area. The (for lack of the actual name of the sauce) olive dipping sauce that comes to the fry is phenomenal and I refuse to get anything that doesn't come with fries! FOOD I normally go for the wraps since they all come with fries, but I've recently discovered their Gyro Plate which also comes with fries; most of their other plates come with rice instead of fries. All of their wraps come with garlic fries or fruit salad. I have never gotten the fruit salad because their fries are the reason why I come here. As mentioned above, their olive dipping sauce is amazing; I always finish the sauce and I don't even like olives. There is just so much flavor in the sauce and it goes with the fries perfectly. For the wraps, my go-to is usually the Lamb Souvlaki since the lamb is so juicy and tender. The wraps, however, can be a bit messy to eat, especially once you get to where the paper is and you need to unwrap it; be careful! All of the wraps are solid though, so pick whichever one you like. The pita is always soft and warm. Portion size is good and should fill you up. The Gyro Plate was a game changer for me since, for $3 more, you get a significant upgrade to your portion-size, which is important to for me due to my eating habits. Compared to the salads, plates come with a salad and, for most of the plates, change out the fries for rice. The Gyro Plate still retains the fries and actually has more gyro slices than the wrap. If you are looking for more food and you like gyros, get the gyro plate. Their gyros are a bit on the salty side, but the salad really helps out with that; the gyros do have a bunch of flavor though! Once again, for effect: get the fries with the olive dipping sauce! SERVICE When you enter, I recommend going inside so you catch the eye of the servers. They will then instruct you to sit wherever you like and then bring you menus. You can seat yourself without going inside and they will still bring you menus, but I find "announcing your presence" really helps speed things up, especially when they are busy. When you are browsing the menu, the server will also bring you water and your utensils. Once on you are ready, you order with the server; they will bring you your food once it's ready. Whenever you are ready to pay, the server will bring you your check. Overall, the servers are very friendly and attentive. Sometimes they can be slow when they are a lot of parties, but it's understandable. No problems with the service. COST Most of their items, especially the wraps, will not go above $20. For the amount of food you are getting and the quality and that dipping sauce, it's very reasonably priced. There's a reason why so many office workers like eating here! SETTING Athena Grill is kind of hard to find since it's located in the middle of a bunch of office buildings; make sure you rely on your GPS to find this spot but they do have some signs around the area to point you in the right direction. There is no dedicated parking lot so you will need to street park here. They have both indoor and outdoor seating with over 20 tables outside and maybe 5-10 tables inside. Their outdoor seating is well covered for both when it's sunny and when it's raining. This place is very popular with office workers in the area so it can get quite full for lunch; dinner is a lot less crowded since this is definitely a restaurant for when people are in the area for work. They take reservations, so if you have a large party, call ahead in advance; lots of large groups for companies eat here! This is not a bad date spot either, especially for dinner since there aren't many people around as long as either of you don't mind the strange location. For everything I've written above, this would be a 5/5, but they did struggle to stay open during the pandemic since most of their customers are office workers in the area. Once my office was opened back up, I ate here quite often to make sure they could make ends meet. They had to make some adjustments and one of them was that they stopped offering complimentary bread. The bread is still available as an appetizer, but the complimentary bread was really, really good and was the other reason why I loved coming here. after a super busy day in the south bay, i was starving and for some reason, i craved pita and hummus, lol! after my last mtg, i pulled out the trusty yelp app, searched for greek/medi food and saw that athena grill was only 5 minutes away! i'd actually been here before, some time ago, but i don't remember much about that experience, so it was good to get a refresher....i knew i wanted takeout so that i could eat at home, so went straight to the counter....but oh so many choices! the display case also had some new and interesting items so of course i had to inquire about those! in the end i ordered: 1. ($12) medium sampler (choice of 3 dips + pita bread & sourdough): a. melitzanosalata: roasted eggplant whipped w/garlic, onion, parsley, roasted red pepper, herbs, vinegar and olive oil (vegan) b. athena olive spread: kalamata olives blended w/garlic & mayonnaise c. hummus: chickpea & tahini w/lemon juice, garlic, olive oil & parsley (vegan) 2. ($22.95) greek salad + shrimp: spring greens, tomato, red onion, cucumber, roasted red pepper, kalamata olives, served with olive oil vinaigrette, add one skewer of marinated tiger prawns 3. ($6.50) baklava + kataifi combo: traditional greek desserts with nuts and honey it was a busy friday evening, so i did have to wait a while for my food to be prepared, but the staff was very kind and service was done with a smile. utensils, napkins, dressing were all packed into the takeout bag, so i was all set! the sampler was probably my favourite part...given how hungry i was, as soon as i got home, i attacked the pita and sourdough and started dipping them into the 3 spreads. i think the athena olive was my favourite, with the tangy olive flavour, the perfect accompaniment to the pita bread. i loved the melitzanosalata, smoky umami flavour from the eggplant, with various herbs made for a beautiful savory dip. who can go wrong with the hummus? it was smooth as butter and was perfect with the pita and sourdough. tbh, i was quite full after devouring most of the bread and spreads, so i only ate a little of the salad, however, on the next day, i ate the whole thing and it was still quite fresh! loved the marinade used on the tiger prawns, and the salad was a lovely fresh blend of crisp veggies, flavor enhanced by the lemon olive oil vinaigrette (yup i squeezed some lemon into the dressing for extra flavour). one of the best salads i've eaten in a long time! the dessert was scrumptious, every bit as good as it looked. the baklava had lots of walnuts and just the right amount of honey, and lots of thin flaky layers of phyllo dough. the kataifi was new to me, but i loved the texture of the fine strands of dough, layered with pistachio and honey. i probably shouldn't have eaten both in one sitting, they were pretty filling, but no regrets for enjoying my sweet treats! the total was about $50 incl tax + tip, a bit high for one person, for takeout, but it was a lot of food that lasted me 2 full meals and i enjoyed every bite, so totally worth it. looking forward to my next visit here! read more
