I have been to Athena twice for my brows 10 years apart and I have been extremely happy both times. The first time she fixed my blue black pencil thinned brows into something thicker and more natural colored (dark brown). It took a few sessions, but she patiently corrected the blue black ink into a dark brown and added a more flattering thicker brow. This time she turned my microbladed thicker brows that I had done by a master in Hong Kong into the perfect permanent fixtures on my face. I just finished my last touch up today and I cannot be happier with the results. While Athena is on the pricier end of the spectrum, you get what you paid for. I have met with many other brow artists and they all lack the vision to be able to do what Athena was able to do with mine. Most of them told me to have them laser removed so they can start over. However, Athena was able to take what was already done and fix it to be more natural. You get what you pay for, so why would you cheap out on your face permanently? Athena is an angel. I had an accident several years ago while hiking. I lost 30% of my lower lip. Ibwas not abke to get to a hospital before it scabbed over slightly and had to wait 2 months for the wound to heal. I had to have reconstructive surgery to fix the dimpled in texture, discoloration and unevenness. Years later while it was a massive improvement it still bothered me. My lower lip was very thin and uneven on the vermilion border. It dimpled in when I made a kissy face and pulled towards the scar when I smiled. I went to Athena because I did a lot of research and did not want to mess around with my face. Athena took her time in showing me the different ways to redefine the lip line. I have had several sessions in the past year. She always takes her time to make sure you are comfortable and checks in with you via text the night after your procedure. She is a sweet caring and beautifully compassionate woman. My lips always healed quickly afterwards and look phenominal. I am able to apply lipstick in 30 seconds instead of the 15 it took before to make myself look even. I feel confident with my lips. Alot of the pulling and dimpling from the scar tissue is gone. When I smile my lips are even. No one but my best friends know I have had anything done. My lips look naturally full and beautiful. This review is for cosmetic tattooing I received at Athena's San Francisco office Athena informed me at the consultation that she charges a fee upfront for services that can be used for the following year.The downside of such a contract was that that Athena was very difficult to get a hold of after the first appointment. iShe often doesn't respond to texts or messages left for her.The color does not last very long after the first session.Additionally, my experience was that Athena consistently had several clients at the same time as well as accepted phone calls while working on clients which created a chaotic and stressful environment. My experience also was that once the skin was broken even with a tattoo needle,scar tissue was created which does not retain pigment.I spent a large amount of money on a procedure which resulted in little satisfaction. read more

After trying to pencil in the "perfect " eyebrow for years and years, I woke up one morning and decided I didn't want to go into old age (like my mother) with no eyebrows because I couldn't see to draw them on anymore! I started using Athena's facial line recently. I have switched on and off from high end brand names to drug store products and have never found anything that made my skin look and feel the way this line does. On the first visit she pencil drew my eyebrows over the tattooing that was there. It looked great. I was shocked at the $3,000 price, but assumed she would be the best. Her personality is delightful, but she almost never got the messages from her scheduler that I was coming, and though she focused on an area that needed an angle correction, which she partially corrected. in several sessions she never came back to what she drew day one that I paid 3K for. My last visit I was there 2 hours before she started with me at all. in the end I was frustrated and disappointed, and unable to look in a mirror because the angle was still so odd, and they were drawn so thin. One time when I went and saw her, there was a gentleman sitting in the chair and she was covering up a surgical scar on the top of his head. I was so impressed. Thanks to Athena's artistic eye, experience and ultimate knowledge I can look in the mirror without cringing. After several breast surgeries that were done through my areola, I had scarring that left my areola looking rather odd and not attractive. I spend no less than 10 minutes per day filling in my eyebrows. Add that up and that's over 60 hours. I knew the insanity had to stop. Not to mention I have a toddler who gives me approximately 5 minutes to get my makeup on in the morning, so efficiency is key. At my last appointment with Dr. Ellis at Gentle Spa (see my separate review of GS, it's the shit) I told him about my eyebrow plight. Dr. Ellis mentioned that some of his other patients had gotten their brows tattooed by Athena (I think the professional term is "permanent makeup"). I trust Dr. Ellis, but I still wanted to check out Athena's reviews. So, I "yelped" her and was thrilled that all of the reviews were amazingly positive. I was, admittedly, a little apprehensive about getting my brows tattooed because I know some people say it hurts really bad and not all my friends who have done this procedure have been satisfied. But, I have 3 tattoos so I figured I could deal with the eyebrows and didn't think that all of Athena's enthusiastically positive feedback could be off. I called Athena on a Monday and she answered her phone immediately. She booked me for that Friday (this past week) at noon! I seriously had no idea what to expect when I ventured into the city for my appointment. First of all, Athena is on the 24th floor of her building with views of North Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge. The lighting in her place is amazingly perfect. Athena was super warm and made me comfy in her stainless steel tattoo shop meets barneys with some lounge-y music playing in the background type of office. Athena talked to me about what I wanted - color, thickness, height of arch, length of brow, etc. She was very thorough and took a lot of pictures each time she outlined my brow as a guide for the ink. Once we settled on the perfect brow she went to work. Athena applies a topical anesthesia so you're fairly numb during the procedure. I was a little worried it would feel just like a tattoo, but it wasn't bad at all. A couple of the brush strokes made me wince a little, but nothing bad. Athena had me check out her progress and involved me in the process. Once she was done and handed me the mirror I almost started crying because she made my brows more symmetrical and the arch was perfect. Seriously, they look freaking great. Athena charges a flat rate for her services and you can get touch-ups as much as you like for a year. I didn't even bother to ask how much it was because I knew she was the best. You'll definitely spend more than other places, but Athena really is an artist and it's your FACE! My brows are healing perfectly and although I don't think Athena will have to tweak anything, she's still called me 2 times already to check on my progress. So far it has been great. I had my brows tattooed two days ago, and they look beautiful. There is no swelling or peeling, the color is a mix of two browns and complements my skin tone nicely. I am dark blond and have always struggled to find the right color, not too cold, not too warm. That wasn't a problem for Athena, she knew exactly what i needed. by the way, she has great light in her office on the 24th floor. I had consultation with somebody else in SF, in a dark windowless place. I mean, isn't good light a requirement for this kind of work? One more thing - I wasn't very easy to work with. Very picky about the shape, I wanted to try every possible variation. Athena patiently outlined my brows with pencil and made helpful comments until I made my choice. Athena charges more than in some other locations, but for the price she offers a year of unlimited touch ups, and i definitely see value in this approach. At first I did not really understand that this was not the same as microblading, and I expected my whole eyebrows to be done in one visit. Yes, she costs more than other technicians but she's in a league of her own, she's worth it, and it will save you the agony I had to go through. I never got the results I was looking for, she never got the color I was going for & I feel she has too much going on & you do not have her full attention. I was recommended to Athena by my doctor in SF. My eyebrows are sparse and over the last few years have become thinner with hair gone in certain areas of the brow. Through online searching and yelping, I first met Athena back in February 2009 for my first consultation. I have a scar on the back of my head from ear to ear about a 1/6" wide from hair grafting. Athena was very amiable and professional upon first impression and we thoroughly discussed procedures and expectations. She was completely honest with me regarding how long and how many sessions may be required to get the desired outcome. Because my scar was texturally and chromatically uneven, deciphering the colors, needle size, technique, etc. to garner the proper effect of seamless scalp transition was a challenge. All in all, essentially a trial and error method would be needed. After multiple sessions (spaced approximately every 2.5 to 3 months or more, depending on scheduling, healing factors, etc), my scar has significantly improved, to where only some areas of the scar are noticeable up close or at certain angles. After meeting Athena's co-worker Evelyn in my last few sessions, the experiences and professionalism have been that much richer, where Athena and Evelyn can bounce ideas and techniques off each other to come up with the best solution. Ultimately, it realistically took multiple sessions and weeks after to see how my skin healed, how the scar looked after, and if environmental factors changed it. To sum it up, Athena and her team are as real as it gets. Because my case was unique in a sense, it took a few tries to come up with a system of techniques and colors that my scalp liked and matched with. Any other tattoologist that promises perfect final results after one session regarding a procedure like mine, or a more common one dealing with eyebrows/lips, should immediately raise red flags. I will continue seeing Athena and Evelyn, knowing that we're inching closer and closer to the desired look. Like a pro she knows all the basics, but a TRUE artist knows how to manipulate those basics and improvise when a challenging situation arises.
