I was across the street for a conference and saw this restaurant on the first day. Since I had a short lunch break I didn't get to go but plenty of other folks from the same conference did go and reported good food. I made the trip the next two days and had some really good, fresh sushi. They have the bento box style lunches like those served in Southern California with nigiri, sushi and also a little Korean influence with some bulgogi. The fish was fresh, the sushi was hand made upon order and I really enjoyed both lunches I had there. I'd definitely come back if I find myself in Grand Rapids again. read more

Overall, bland to inedible with what I can only surmise is an attempt at Tuna Aburi that is executed in a criminally reprehensible way. Also, not cheap at all. Some of the worse sushi I've had in a long long time, and I put this considerably below all you can eat joints. May be a great way to lose a few lbs though. read more

Do not come here for Ramen. I ordered the $14 Spicy Ramen. It came with very few vegetables : two slices of mushrooms , cabbage and green onions and a little grated carrot. The spicy broth that was thin and watery. Honestly the noodles were the same as the Ramen packets you buy 3 for a dollar in any supermarket. No meat at all. I asked for some seafood for an extra $3. All of the sushi I've tried here has been high quality and well-made. The yellowtail roll is perfectly buttery. I would personally recommend coming here between 12:30-2pm if you want lunch, but don't want to experience the lunch rush. I usually get a few rolls and a bowl of miso soup. Their main entrees are great, but I prefer the sushi when making the trip here. One thing I did notice is that their labels for spicy items are greatly exaggerated for the local crowd, which I expect in this area. This location was directly across the street from my hotel, while recently visiting Grand Rapids. It made it an easy choice for dinner since I love sushi. Myself and a co-worker were quickly greeted and seated. The waitress was quick with our drinks and assisted us with taking our order in an expeditious manner. The sushi was very good, made very quickly and tasted very fresh. My only disappointment was that they do not serve beer, as we both requested a Kirin Ichiban and were told that there is no alcohol served there. It is some of the best sushi I've had in the area. For the price, you get way more sushi than you could get at a sushi boutique restaurant. Two rolls for the price of one roll at a boutique. Two trips to Japan sort of spoiled me for American sushi (it's fine, just not the same). And sushi is widely available. Simple, delicious, steaming, slurpable udon, is not. Ato has an extensive menu that goes beyond sushi and noodles to include Korean dishes as well as other Japanese favorites like teriyaki chicken. That makes Ato a solid choice for small groups where not everyone loves sushi. The menu includes a variety of lunch combinations and specials, which makes sense given the downtown location. This little place I had some really good food and was a great deal. I rolled into town a little on the late side on a weeknight and wanted somewhere to eat. Everybody yells hello when you walk in and you see the sushi chefs at their stand cranking out some really fine looking Sushi. I actually sat at the sushi bar as I was the loner sitting alone on this occasion. Very small place so you're not going here with a large party. Since I had checked at the menu before I arrived, I already knew what I was going to order. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki Bento Box. This came with four pieces of a California roll, tempura, rice, beef teriyaki and soup and salad. All of it was really good. Honestly, the only part of it that was slightly disappointing was the actual beef teriyaki itself. It was a little on the overdone side. The California roll wasn't the greatest, or I should say freshest, that I've ever had but it was still good. Sitting in the prime seat I was in, I was able to see a lot of the other full sushi rolls that were being prepared and taken out to customers. Some of them looked really fantastic. Would I go back? Absolutely. Great value as well as really good food. I was in and out of there for dinner in less than half an hour and in total, including tip, my meal was $22. Not a bad deal! read more
