Hugh and Brian were great. I limped in with my 14 year commuter with a misfiring cylinder. I guess I'm accustomed to getting ripped off by mechanics--but not this time. I usually do my own repairs and I am pretty auto savvy, but I don't have much time to do that kind of stuff any more. I know when someone tries to BS me about a repair I don't need, and Austin Auto Techs were awesome about only fixing what was really broken. They fixed my little car within two hours and explained everything beforehand. They were inexpensive and didn't try to charge me for work that did not need to be done. Hugh even saved me money off the original estimate when he discovered a part didn't need to be replaced after inspecting it. I've been taking my 2010 Prius to Auto Techs for scheduled maintenance for 2 years now and I've had a positive experience every time! I feel they have always been honest with me and they've never tried to upsell me on expensive parts or procedures (unlike the dealership!) I've taken my car in and waited for it in their comfortable lounge, and today I dropped it off in the morning. Auto Techs drove me home and promptly picked me up again when the car was ready. When I wait for it, they usually finish it in under an hour. I also believe the prices are fair for the work they do. Very good and trustworthy mechanic shop. I've been taking my cars to Hugh & Brian since I got married and my wife told me about them in 2004. TECHNICAL EXPERTISE: Pre-purchase inspections, tune ups, timing chain, belts, plugs, brakes, engine oil leaks, electrical problems, fuel tank problems... you name it, they have kept my 1994 Honda Accord going strong since I bought it off of Craiglist in 2006 with 100K miles on it. Something breaks on it about once a year, and I have never taken it back to them for the same problem. CUSTOMER SERVICE: They have always been very communicative about the problem and they give you options when you've got them. They don't use forceful sales tactics to get you to do work you can live without, and they shoot you straight about consequences of skipping maintenance. PRICE: I never know exactly how much car repair should cost, since I am not in the business, but I have never received a jaw dropping estimate from these guys. Their prices are fair and like I mentioned above, they are good at telling you what you can get away with not fixing. Example: Common problem with 94 Accords is having broken baffles in the gas tank which cause the car to die when braking. They advised me that they could replace these for ($$$ I forget) but that I would not need to get this fixed if I always kept more than a quarter of a tank of gasoline in it. I just had some service on various parts and engine oil change. I go here whenever I need anything to be replaced or repaired for my car. Several years ago, nearby firestone gave me some quote on the repairs or changes those people thought as necessary, and those items looked suspicious to me. And I brought the car to another place, and they also gave me a bit reduced list of things that need to be repaired, but still I could not trust it. Then I visited Austin Auto Techs, and these guys gave me a much more reasonable list of items for repair. After this, whenever I have anything that needs serious attention, I bring my car to this place. The only complaint I have for this place is their hours, and some difficulty of making reservation, especially during busy seasons.. but these are things I shouldn't be complaining. I've been using Austin Auto Techs for over 8 years now. I would have rated them with five stars earlier if I had been aware of Yelp. My experience with Hugh started simply - I worked near AAT and they got my oil change business. A few months later, I bought a restored 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. At that time, I had no idea what maintenence issues this vehicle would have - particularly the last couple of year models - it had a carburator as well as being part Chrysler, part GM & part Ford. When the first big issue hit I couldn't find anyone who would work on it. I decided to call Hugh since AAT had been great so far. With some hesitation, Hugh decided to take on my beast and for the next several years he earned my respect with his knowledge, hard work and respect for me as the owner. Several vehicles later, Hugh and AAT take care of all my vehicles from pre-inspection until the next purchase. I recently purchased a used BMW X5 and Hugh is helping me keep my car in top shape at a fair price. Just recently, I called Hugh after a scheduled maintenence visit to tell him how much I appreciate AAT. I've only taken my truck there once, so don't put too much stock in this review. But they made a great first impression. I took my old dodge pickup in for what I thought was a blown power steering pump. They had it for a couple of hours, then called and said it was a disconnected hose, which they had reconnected, then filled the pump with power steering fluid, and driven it without issues. They only charged me 50 bucks for the diagnostic. Nothing for extra labor or fluids. I paid over the phone, and picked up my truck after they'd closed. Well done guys. I'm not looking forward to coming back, but with two cars in my driveway sitting on 10+ years, I'm sure I will be. read more

Both times, we were sure that it was having huge problems and both times AAT have gotten us fixed up without any hassle and were amazing to work with. We have been in Austin for 3 years and have been trying different mechanics to find one that is truly trustworthy. I think we have just found one. They don't open on the weekend... so I kind of have to get it in bright early in the morning so that I can drive to work. They do offer you a ride but Round Rock is a bit too far for them and i totally understand. I got in this morning for oil change and requested them to take a look at the front wheel where the rattling sounds come from. They had to order the part but got it done within 4 hours as promised. In between the time they did call me to ask some questions about the wheel cap lug nuts since I have no clue about my own Passat. The waiting room is clean, with lots of magazines and have wifi service. The mechanics are very friendly and professional. Although I did drive a mile and turned back to the shop for some minor check, they made my car runs smoother than before. I am definitely coming back again for future needs. read more

They are amazing. I don't trust anyone else in Austin with my car. I don't know a lot about cars, but I've had to take mine in a couple of times to get checked out. They never make me feel stupid, they explain everything clearly, are really helpful, and fast. I've had a couple of times where I thought SOMETHING might be wrong with my car, but I didn't know what. So I brought it in to Austin Auto Techs, and once or twice they've found something that needed to be fixed, but more often than not, they find ways to save me money. They never try to find extra things to fix that aren't really broken--I trust their advice completely. They've also helped me find a new seatbelt for my car, spending a week calling junkyards looking for the right kind and color, ordering it, and then replacing it. They even took a second look at it when I was worried something was stuck inside. They are always really accommodating of my hectic schedule, either taking my appointment early in the morning, or picking me up and dropping me off while my car is being fixed. The shop is clean, and everyone who works there has been really welcoming and kind. I really can't say enough good stuff about them! read more

I've been doing business with Austin Auto Tech since 1996 and have been very satisfied with the work they have done on all my vehicles. We owned an 02 PT Cruiser that developed a perplexing problem of deciding not to start at the most inconvenient times. Of course, the anomaly could not be repeated at the shop and the diagnostic equipment indicated no errors. A lot of shops would have just started replacing parts in hopes of resolving the problem. Not Auto Techs. They were diligent in determining the source of the problem without presenting me a bill every time they opened the hood. It did take several visits and I know they were as frustrated as I was, but the problem was finally solved. Update: I'm all for going to the little guys, but it is always best to get a competing quote from other trusted garages before committing to AutoTech's prices. (-1 star) I've been in search of a good garage for quite a while now. Found these guys by the glowing Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Their prices are very reasonable and the turn around is quick. Hugh took the time to explain the service points recommended for mileage, confirmed which I had selected, and called back to notify me if their tech found any additional items needing attention - without trying to push any additional service. Of the two vehicles I've taken in, Austin Auto Techs gets props for lubricating the window rails on a finicky power window rather than selling me a whole new motor - which the dealer was more than happy to suggest as a solution. They also get props for doing a thorough inspection of my other vehicle and identifying my rear differential fluid was still very dirty even though it had been drained and changed less than 1,500 miles previously. They sampled the oil so I could see the problem for myself and recommended I go back to the other shop to get it flushed again - which I did. Very fair. Very quick. Not a chain. read more

My car has been having a noise in the back for over a year, I have taken it to many places to have the car looked at and they all said it was fine. Since so many good reviews of Austin Auto Techs, I went to try them out yesterday. I explained the problem, a metal noise when going over uneven roads, almost like something was unstable in the trunk. They did a diagnostic and took it for a drive, found the problem and replaced it. When I went to pickup the car today, the one of the owners Hugh showed me what the problem was. He even showed me the part that they took off and gave me a visual understanding of what the problem was. My A/C has been dead for a couple of years and I've gotten estimates ranging from just over $1000 to nearly $2000 to fix it, all of them saying that the system would have to be completely replaced. In the midst of an Austin July, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and get it fixed. I'd had some good experiences with Austin Auto Techs so I asked them to give me an estimate, explaining that yes, I knew it was going to be expensive. They came back with just over $350. Wait, what? They explained that they'd checked each component of the system and, far from needing a complete replacement, there was just a corroded switch that needed to be replaced, which they did in a timely fashion. So yeah, these guys saved me over $600 by actually checking stuff out instead of playing 'how much can we get away with charging' like most outfits do. read more

Let me start on the good points. They got me in right away. They gave me a ride home. Called with an estimate. Performed the requested work in a timely manner. They also brought to my attention other concerns with the vehicle. That was all good. The not so good.They charged me for two different belts. I came back the next morning to ask why they charged me for 2 different belts. I was told that the second belt runs the A/C compressor. I had to be at an appointment somewhere. So I had to come back later on because I knew my vehicle only has one belt. But, just to make sure. I called the car dealership parts department to make sure I was not wrong. They confirmed it... One belt. The part that is bad. I go back to the shop a few hours later. I tell them that I called the car dealership and they also confirmed one belt. I tell them I know people make mistakes. This time I was told. They ordered the wrong belt and had to order a different belt. The wrong size belt was not taken off the ticket. He refunded the cheaper of the 2 belts. He never apologized for giving me total wrong information. about saying there are 2 belts on the vehicle. Now I do not trust what I was told about other issues with the vehicle. How can I? My wife and I just recently had some repair work done on her CRV by the folks at Auto Techs, and I am sorry to say that it was rather frustrating. Our first experience with them was February of 2011, when they replaced a few hoses on my wife's CRV. Didn't cost too much, service was alright, no complaints there. When we went to pick it up, they told us that they had noticed a few other issues and that they could email an estimate for those. When we read the email, they said the timing belt was cracked and needed replacing, the CV boots were torn, the water pump needed replacing, and the brakes would soon need replacing. I trusted those statements as true, but let them know that it would take us some time to save the money necessary to afford the repairs. Two months later, we had saved up enough for the timing belt and the CV joints. We made an appointment to have them replaced, and based on the estimate we received in February, thought it would cost $932.95. My wife was very surprised to find that the bill was for $1245.30, a difference of more than $300. I looked over the invoice, and found that they had charged us twice for the parts necessary for changing out the water pump. This was doubly concerning in that we had never asked for the water pump to be replaced to begin with. Granted, there was mention of changing out the water pump on the original estimate from two months ago, but my wife explicitly stated when making the appointment that she only wanted the timing belt and CV joints changed out. I called them up and explained the situation, and to their credit, they did everything that I suppose could be expected to rectify the situation. They apologized profusely for charging us twice for the water pump, and after discussing it with them for 10 or 20 minutes, agreed that since we didn't ask for it to be replaced, they ought not to have replaced it. If you're curious, their reason for replacing it was that the water pump was nearing the end of its expected lifetime, and was included on our estimate from two months ago. Even though my wife had asked for only the CV joint and timing belts to be replaced, they inferred that we would want the water pump replaced as well, as it would save us on labor costs to replace it now as opposed to replacing it a year from now. After talking with them, they agreed to refund the price of the extra pump they charged us for and the labor we hadn't asked for, but still charged us for the new part we hadn't asked for. I can't say that I blame them for expecting us to pay for the part, as it is now in our car, but it still did leave a bad taste in my mouth and a bigger hole in my wallet. In summary, they made a mistake and responded to it pretty well. They arguably could have been nicer and refunded the price of the part we didn't ask for, but they certainly refrained from going the full scumbag route and charging us for both the part we didn't ask for and the labor we didn't want. read more

I have been a client of Austin AutoTechs since 2013. Nobody will ever get my business until I move from Austin. These guys are the best, and here's a few reasons why: 1. As a woman, I love that Austin AutoTechs is treating me just as equally as a male client. See, I'm the one with the flexible schedule at the moment, so I'm the one running to the mechs with my shitty blue focus (Yeah, Mike and Craig, it's Ms. Perez). I find it SO refreshing that I am not looked at weirdly or receiving condescending comments from Austin AutoTechs, like it had happened so often in the past when going to any car-related service provider. I can honestly say: hey, I think I have a problem with my water pump, can you check it ? and not get a death stare from daring to voice what I think is wrong with the car. 2. Service is OUTSTANDING. They never fail to recognize me on the phone and remember my name when I walk in. 3. Work is flawless and they are very honest about what needs to be fixed. We never had to come back to get one of the repairs redone, we were never over-quoted and if another problem arose, we quickly got a call asking us if we wanted to go through with the repair. All in all, while going to the mechs is always frustrating, these guys always *somehow* make me smile, happy and forgetting about the inconveniences of an old car. I needed to get my windshield washer fluid pump replaced, get an oli change and do a texas state inspection. Austin Auto Techs got it done quickly and at a very reasonable price. They were pleasant to deal with and didn't try to upsell me like many other garages I have been to before. There was a mixup with the original date I could get my service done but they worked me to quickly correct it. Made an appointment the morning of for an oil change and they got in a couple hours later. Craig was friendly and accommodating. I ended up getting an oil change as well as my tires rotated and balanced. It was my fault for not asking what the cost would be but I was pretty disappointed to discover that the cost to get my tires rotated and balanced was $60. Seriously, if you can get your car into these guys do it. Taking my car into a mechanic has always been an iffy thing for me. Ever since that 60 minutes episode a few years back when they put a hidden camera into the auto shops and found they were overcharging or lying to their customers I have been very wary around mechanics. So, when my truck's a/c broke I took it into one of my clients auto shop first to get it repaired. That was a mistake. I wont mention the name of the shop here but they failed to fix the a/c twice and I was left with a $800 bill and a hot car. Then I got smart and went to yelp. Austin Auto Techs had great ratings and was relatively close by so I gave it a try. Excellent decision. They diagnosed the problem as one of two things. Basically, they could fix a small thing and it might solve the problem completely or they could replace the entire system and guarantee the fix. Obviously replacing the entire system would be more expensive but if the small fix didn't work, they would have to go in again and the extra labor for fixing it twice would be more expensive in the end. They were 90% the small fix would solve the problem. I decided to roll the dice and go with the small fix. It didn't fix the problem unfortunately. So, I called the next day and told them I would be bringing it back in. They had it fixed in no time and, to my delightful surprise, decided not to charge me for the extra labor. So, basically they warned me about the extra cost and, even though I decided not to take my advice and it was completely my fault, they took off the extra cost and fixed my car for cheaper than I could have ever expected. Hats off to wonderful customer service and a job well done. Its feels nice having a go to mechanic you can trust. One bad thing is they are busy ALL THE TIME so be prepared to wait a little on the repairs. read more

When I first moved to Austin I went to the highest rated auto shop in North Austin and ended up paying $61 for an oil change on my Honda Civic Si, which was surprisingly expensive. 6 months later and my civic needed another oil change and the tires rotated, but I knew I would not be returning to the same shop. I called Austin Auto Techs and was given a very fair quote. When I arrived they told me the service would take about an hour and I could wait there if I liked. Their waiting room was one of the nicest I have ever been at in an auto shop! Not only did it feature plush leather couches with a TV and an array of magazines to browse, but they also offered complimentary coffee to boot! I settled in comfortably and when they told me 50 minutes later my car was ready, I didn't want to leave! Wary that everything was too good to be true, I checked the oil and the tires when I got home and confirmed they did an outstanding job as well. 5-stars for great pricing, great work, and great atmosphere. read more

Just a heads up, if hugh prifogle the 4th Xis working in this location the work will not be completed with the care it should be. This shop is great im sure but the owners son does shoddy work and caused the engine in my car to lock up. Now he wont even take my calls or look at my car to tell exactly what the problem is. When he did the work on my car all i needed was a water pump. I bought the timing belt/ water pump kit. He installed everything and two days later it made a clunk noise and died. Engine hasnt turned over since then. He doesnt do quality work or stand behind his work. I would just make sure which employees were working before i left my vehicle here. read more

I've been going to Auto Techs for years and I've never left this place unsatisfied. These guys have nailed the customer service part. They're friendly, prompt, knowledgeable, and downright honest. I've used them for basic services as well more intense repairs. My most recent experience with Auto Techs involved some interior work after my vehicle had been broken into while I was out of town. My expensive factory stereo among other electronics were badly damaged and broken. This terrible situation was easily remedied with one phone call. These guys handled it quick and found flawless parts at an unbelievable rate. When I picked my car up, it was in tip-top condition! read more

Until my last couple of experiences here I would have given 3 out of 5 stars. Based on recent deception and incompetence, 1 star is much more fitting... If you need an oil change, your brakes fixed, or something else routine, these guys do pretty good work (albeit with not always the friendliest demeanor). Until recently, I didn't need any more than this type of work from them. However, due to their lackluster customer service, I had tried going to another shop and had such a bad experience there, I thought I'd give Auto Techs another shot. It did not turn out well. I had them replace a ball joint, air intake boot, glue back my rearview mirror, and they were going to fix my door lock cylinder which they ultimately said they could not do (they still charged me for the labor to try). I was told it would only take a day. I got my car back a week later. The delay and a few other things aside, I'm most annoyed with the following two things: 1. They broke my door handle trim, replaced it with a cheap after market part that did not fit correctly and never told me. When I got my car back they said they never wanted to work on my door again and if I needed anything done with it to go elsewhere. That's fine, but I could tell it had not been put back together all that well. The window wasn't closed all the way as you could hear wind blowing through loudly when driving. When I asked about this, they said they put the window up as high as they could, again stating they won't touch it again. I also noticed the door handle had to be manually pushed back in order to close otherwise it would get stuck on the trim (which locks you inside, as I found out the hard way, forcing me to exit from the passenger side). I figured they had such a hard time putting the components to the door back together that this was a result of that. It wasn't until I got the cylinder fixed elsewhere that I realized they had replaced the trim and that is why the handle was getting caught. The trim they used was not a manufacturer part and thus not cut exact to fit my door. My other mechanic also pointed out how Austin Auto Techs tried shaving down part of the trim to make the handle fit better. So they knew it didn't fit well and still didn't tell me. Here's the other thing, it cost only $30 from the dealer for the genuine part that fit which I bought and took 1 minute to install. Are you really pressing to save $30 when you broke the part to begin with? It even would have been cheaper for them to buy it since they get wholesale pricing. I respect people who are accountable for their mistakes. I work to be the same way myself. I don't give business to those who don't. To me, this was cheap and deceptive on their part. 2. The moment I got my car back I noticed my traction control light was on. When I asked them about this (because it was not on before I left it with them), they checked it and said I needed many new traction control sensors. It wasn't until I had another mechanic look at something completely unrelated that the new mechanic said "why is your traction control unplugged?" So Austin Auto Techs would have charged me for all these sensors when all that literally needed to happen was to plug in a wire. Really? I don't think this part was deceitful, just incompetent since they didn't even look to see if this was left unplugged. Plus, the reason it was unplugged to begin with (I later found out) was because you had to unplug it to replace the air intake boot. They just didn't plug it back in afterwards. Everyone makes mistakes. It is not so much the mistake that is important, but what one does after making a mistake that matters most, to me at least. One final point, Austin Auto Techs time and time again gave me the impression they did not like working on my car. Why even accept my business to begin with? The best mechanic I've ever had back in California did not work on every brand of car. These guys here could save time and money for themselves and customers by doing this as well. I agree with Carl. It's great to find a small, reliable shop where the people whose names are on the sign also do the work. I took a Jeep here to get some work done and I was able to get a quote within a few hours and the work finished within 2 days. Very very very slow service. They took my car for 3 weeks and ended up only repairing something very minor. Not to mention that they charged me 500$ for that (something I was expecting 100$ Max). They charge for every little thing, if you ask them to check anything at all (and I mean anything..) they will charge you for it. Too expensive, too slow, I'll never go here again. read more

I received a coupon in the mail for a free oil change here, so I used it. The employees were friendly and the service was good. They finished exactly when they told me they would. There was no pitch from them to obtain additional services. With a comparable price to Jiffy Lube, I would go back to Auto Techs, and I would try them for other services as well. read more
