Five stars because it was exactly what we were looking for. Good local brews, thin crust pizza (shared) and a good assortment of other reasonably healthy dishes and salads. We sat at the bar and had a great conversation and some of the most polite service ever from Tyler. He gave advice on hiking destinations and his take on mountain living as a 20 something. We are seniors into photography, so we much appreciated how he saved us 500 feet of climbing on our hike. Avalanche is a small joint, so if you are looking to put a big crowd into a bunch of comfy booths, this is not your place, but for a basic mountain brewpub it is perfect. read more

Landed in town from Durango. Ended up here for pizza and a beer. Great choice. We had an IPA and a wit. Both excellent. But the hand tossed pizza was the best. Ordered the Nor'easter, a white pizza with a crispy and soft chewy crust. Perfect. read more

Small place but the avocado wrap was delicious. My parents had the ham and Brie but they were out of Brie. The corn chowder was good as was the cornbread. Definitely tasted homemade. Happy we stopped in. Oh yeah, bus your own tables and fill your own drinks. Can't attest to the beer. read more

Walked here after coming from Montanya. Small on the inside, but has decent food selection and of course the beer was great, I really enjoyed the White-Out Whit and some apple and ham pizza. Though, the employees seemed annoyed that tourists like myself and my boyfriend were coming in and were simply inquiring about what was good on their menu. I had an order each of the veggie and chicken tacos, and they looked amazing when they came out, but there just wasn't a ton of flavor somehow. So the food vaires day to day and depending on who made it the day before or day before that. Sometimes yes its good, but really how good is reheated food?? Keish- gave 4 of 5 of us FOOD POISONING in September 2011. Keish is eggs, amyone in a restaurant should know how to cook eggs. When we called to tell the "this season's Owner, Austin" he told us it was our choise not to return again!! So guess what Austin- we wont and we will tell everyone else not to return either. I loved this place. I am in the brewing industry and happened upon this establishment when I was in the area backpacking. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the brewpub. I enjoyed the food and beer, but the personable nature of the brewers/owners behind the bar really was the highlight of my experience there. When doing my research on places to eat before our trip to Silverton, I was excited to try the Avalanche Cafe. Unfortunately, once we actually ate there, it wasn't too exciting. Service was fine. Not great, but not bad. Perhaps we just had 'STUPID TOURISTS' stamped on our foreheads, but the guy behind the counter wasn't too friendly. My husband and I both ordered wraps. He got the Avocado Wrap and I got the Greek Wrap (I think that's what it was called). We got our daughter a grilled cheese and a bowl of fruit. My husband felt his wrap was really dry and didn't even taste like avocado. He had to go ask for more sauce for it, and after that, said it was better. Mine pretty much tasted like greens and dressing. I could taste almost nothing else, because it was so saturated with dressing. Meh. We did try some of our daughter's sandwich though, and it was pretty tasty. It had been made on a panini press, so that might be the key. All in all, not impressed. :| read more

Visited this comfortable, relaxing place today. How was this place selected? They are dog friendly on the patio! We had White Out (a Belgium type Beer), Treasure Mountain (pale ale), plus the house IPA (sorry not the one I drank so I cannot remember the name). We all enjoyed our beverage of choice! Only a little disappointed that the did not have their house porter beer but gives us a reason to visit again! We also had their pizza. Which is OUTSTANDING! The Pizza was amazing. You could tell it was all fresh ingredients and the crust was to Die for. The crust had just the right amount of crispy and is brushed with a garlic butter (??). This place is a joke, coffee and food prices are high for what you get. Burritos are premade and not worth your taste buds. Ruben is poorly done, meat is chunky over cooked and dry, nowhere close to a Ruben. Portions are small. Now, Americano wise, we went there 3 different days and amount of shots you get in the large Americano changed every time, yet I always paid $3.75, go figure.... Service is very poor and slow, 10-15 min for 1 Americano with two customers in the shop?! The place is kind of like a hippy bar. Will never go back, it's not worth my money nor my time. read more

Came here while vacationing, beer was great and food was decent. Only gripe and what ruined it for me was the staff. Seemed annoyed that tourist would come in and ask what's good on the menu. Then somebody else in the kitchen making snide comments if you didn't pronounce something the way they would have. What a pleasure to walk into this tiny bar and restaurant and not feel like they are only interested in how fast they can get my tourist dollars. Very welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and cheerful ski-based decor. Several vegetarian options were available, happily, and I had the delicious Mexican butternut squash soup, my husband enjoyed the Southwest Turkey on toasted sourdough. My soup came with gluten-free cornbread which was yummy. I don't need gluten-free food, and was surprised to find this was good, to be honest! Very small but has a nice porch and good decorations that lead to a nice atmosphere. Cool trail signs from purgatory in the restroom. Bartender was friendly and fairly talkative. OK, I heard good reviews about this place so we decided on 2 salads for lunch. Advertised price on a chalkboard said $5.50 for a large salad. We got a Thai and a Greek salad. When my husband went to pay they entered the amount and then added $3.more on one and $2. more on the other. My husband said "Wait...they are $5.50 each on your board here..." The response was "Prices are subject to change." WHAT??? How can a business do this and stay in business. In addition, the Thai salad was nothing but lettuce, some shredded carrots and a few sprouts with a mediocre dressing. I would definitely NOT recommend this restaurant.
