Stopped in by chance for a cold one and something to eat. It's kind of a self serve place where the silver and bussing are done by yourself. No problem here however. Everything is home made from what I was told from someone later on. They brew their own beers and the Pride of the West Porter was some of the best porter we ever had!!! My wife also tried a Hot White Russian type drink and loved it. The drink choices were creative and had the cute descriptions that she loves and has to try. We decided on the Neopolitano pizza. OMG. The favors were awesomely fresh and worked SO well together. Must have been that home made pesto sauce... Then comes the crust. It was done to perfection. Perfect firmness, perfect chewiness, perfect all around texture. I rate this piece of artistic creation as in the top echelon of pizza experiences I have ever had. I can not believe I had to go to Silverton Colorado to find it. Upon talking to the pizzaiolo, the dough is indeed made in house along with other ingredients. (Like I thought different?) He then offered me a slice of a green chili sauce based pizza with sausa fresca and things I can't remember except that the favors were well married and the thing was outta this world! My boyfriend and I have been "habituals" at Avalanche the past two years we have lived in SW CO. We were worried when they were moving that it would lose the "small/cozy feel" it had but that concern was lost as soon as we went to their new spot. The vibe is super chill with the most friendly staff. I am a margarita snob and though I LOVE their beer I'm always wanting to start with a spicy margarita (or three!! Lol). It isn't on the "'menu" but the fantastic bartenders never say NO to muddling me a fresh spicy concoction. I will be honest... their manager Tracy holds the title for my top 5 spicy margaritas I've ever had in my life (which is impressive since I'm 42 in January!). The food is also AMAZING! I've joked that their ranch dressing is something I could pour over everything and be super stoked! Our favorites are the wings of any flavor (super crispy and fresh), the speciality Hawaiian style pizza, all the tacos and of course the dough balls (again- the ranch sauce is to die for). Avalanche is a staple for us and we truly have never had a bad time between drinks, food and/or service. Great place for a quick pit stop on your way through Silverton! Avalanche was the only place we found that was open it what could be called silverton's "off-season". We had ziberfizz cream soda's and a Meathead Pizza and it was really good! We got to watch the lady behind the bar seal beer and lager in house and it was super cool to watch! The bright colors are Tibetan inspired and make you want to hire a Sherpa and trek. The inside is small and quaint. Their kitchen is tiny, but they are reasonably efficient. We've been here twice this summer. Every beer we tried was AMAZING! Full of flavor and finishes smooth. The coconut margarita was delicious. It wasn't too sweet and I especially liked the coconut flakes around the rim. When we went on Father's Day we LOVED our food. We had the spicy pork tacos, pull pork sandwich, chicken tacos and chicken wrap. The food that day was delicious and fresh. But when we went back July 6th the food was mediocre and disappointing. The corn tortillas were straight out of the bag, not warmed. The chicken tasted like warmed up boiled chicken. The tacos were dry. It was a totally different food experience. We tried the pizza that same day hoping for a redeeming experience. While the toppings were flavourful and well paired, the crust tasted like cardboard. Visited my birth home, Silverton, last weekend. Stopped in at Avalanche 2.0, previously Romero's for 48 years. Food okay, a brew is a brew but lacked "hospitality"! George Romero greeted everyone. I did hear derogatory remarks about Romero's and the new owner telling them to keep it down as previous owners in the building! Wow! As a vegan, I am used to limited options when visiting small country towns. Imagine my surprise when I saw Avalanche Cafe offer tofu and soymilk substitutes for their drinks and food! Got the Chai Tea Latte which was really strong but I grew to like it. The breakfast burrito (w/o meat & cheese, substitute tofu) was smothered in green chili... and DELICIOUS! For the "fancy" $10 pizza you could pick 3 toppings, but because I don't eat cheese, I was able to get a 4th topping at no extra cost. The Avalanche is a great place to find straight-forward comfort food during the day and excellent artisan pizza at night (Thu/Fri/Sat). They serve a selection of beer and wine, and do espresso drinks as well. The atmosphere is very casual and everyone who works there is friendly. The front deck is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee or sit inside by the woodstove in the winter. Steph also makes great homemade soups and has a different dinner special every week (in addition to the pizza & salads). Definitely a must-do while in Silverton. read more

The interior of Avalanche is kind of like a wannabe hipster city coffee shop more than a brewery, and that's not a compliment at all. They only had three of there own brews on draft plus PBR. Avalanche was hands down my favorite place to eat throughout my travels to Silverton for the past 5 or so years. However after today I doubt I'll be back again. I don't know what happened to the killer sandwiches,awesome breakfasts, and baked goods but they have been replaced with a big ol glass of trendy beer. Truth be told, I saw the sizes of the beer glasses; pretty small if I must say. Sure, today I had a Thai chicken wrap and bag of chips but honestly it wasn't that much better than what I can get at a grocery store deli counter. And if you open now at 11, how can your baked goods case be literally empty by 1pm? I'm very sad to say but what I knew Avalanche to be is now just a faded memory. This was the first place my boyfriend and I ate at when we got into Silverton off of the CT. The guy who gave us a ride into town suggested it saying they had the best beer and awesome jalapeño poppers and pizza. I ordered the strawberry rhubarb góse beer (DELICIOUS) and my boyfriend had the IPA. Beer is definitely done well here. We ordered the jalapeño poppers which were delicious, and we split one of their pizzas which was also delicious. We've since eaten at several places in town and Avalanche IMO holds its place at the top for best beer and food. The atmosphere is great too, and the deck out front is dog friendly! Love. Love. Love. Not sure what more I should say. After watching the Skijoring competition we stopped in for beer and pizza. The beer (Wit and Smash) was fantastic and a combo I heard ordered by other patrons several times while there. The Smash was not intended to be an IPA but came out with more hops than anticipated so they went with it. It as a solid IPA. The pizza (supreme) was equally as awesome. The crust and toppings were quality. Though packed from the event we got seats at the bar. The staff was friendly and attentive.
